Bug Out Drill - Waco, TX

When: Saturday, Oct 4, 2014
Where: Joe Russell Rd & Hwy 84, Prairie Hill, TX

Description/Course Description/Equipment Requirements

It's here again, the 2014 Bug Out Drill, the challenge unlike any other.
You’re driving home from work and an EMP strikes, the Russians have
detonated several nukes over the United States. The pulse has destroyed
all electronics and chaos has ensued. No signal lights, bank alarms,
stores are being robbed for anything of value. You move to your trunk
and get you Bug Out bag and start heading home, the best way you know.
This means you must trek over wooded and public roads, hiding from
possible thugs that might want to strip you of anything of value.
Expect 17 or 18 miles of cross country movement, lots of shooting
situations and test of your thinking ability and preparedness. You must
get home as quickly as possible, good luck.

Time: Sign-in at 7:00am; Drill begins at 8:00am

Equipment: No calibers above .308. No armor piercing ammunition or
tracer rounds allowed. All shooters will be required to carry a pistol
at all times during the match. This will be a high round count event,
both shooter should bring 150 rounds of rifle and 100 rounds of pistol,
if you don’t miss. There is no weapon or equipment limits, but if you
use it you must carry it. There can be no switching of gear or dropping
of gear during the match, you start with it you finish with it. This
year you must carry all your water, or filter it from the stock pond.

Cost: $150 (This event is limited to 50 competitors)

Who said I was planning on calling the cops?

FYI - As I sit here at work I am armed - I just don't have my M14 or AR15 with me compete with a chest rig full of 10 mags full of ammo.  If the friggen lights go out along with every other bit of electronic gear - I'll have a pretty good idea of what just happened - then I will load up my backpack's bladder with water from our cooler, put on my walking shoes, and head down the strairwell and head homeward.  I don't think my route will devolve into complete anarchy in less than 1/2 an hour - about the time it will take me to walk out of the downtown area.   From there, if my car won't start or the roads are jammed, about 3 more hours should have me home regardless.

edit:  And WTF does any of this have to do with politics anyway?  The issue is whether you are safer open-carrying a rifle on your hike home, or trying to be a bit more subtle.

"Something tells me any clowns walking 18 miles home looking like an SWAT entry team member on a raid is going to bring down more shit on himself than if he just went "grey man" and laid low." That you got 8 idiots to upvote this reactionary crap tells me loads about ZH's evolving readership.  Your posts are usually better than this..

I dont think you have seen enough "preppers"....i was the guest instructor for an all day shooting class.  Everyone was told to bring their bug out bag.  I brought a scale.  Of the 33 attendees, 19 have BOB and gear that weighed over 70 lbs!  After a 1/2 jog with all their gear most were done for the next hour....10 of them had helmets, IIIA body armor with plated, etc.   They looked like wannabe swat types.  Only 10 were even close to being in shape.

This is exactly why TJ started hosting the TVBOD. 15 miles and 12+ stages is an excellent lesson...and a whole lot of fun. It doesn't matter if you're the officer that just returned from a second tour leading recon missions in Iraq, or the housewife whose husband makes her haul a BOB around in the back of the station wagon, you're going to learn something from the drill that someday may save your life.

Just to clarify - it does sound like great fun, and a great exercise.  It just seems more like a post-SHTF recon/rescue exercise into hostile territory than a practical "get your ass home as the shit is going down" exercise.

One of the scenarios I have planned for (which I honestly think is as, if not more likely, than an EMP) is a post PacNW subduction-zone earthquake trip home.  Assuming my building didn't collapse, I'd be willing to bet I'd spend more time helping stabilize folks in medical need on my way out, than shooting looters or robbers (I also have an extensive medical kit at work).

Maybe it's just because I don't live in a shithole area anymore (I used to live in the Bay Area near Oakland/Richmond when the Rodney King riots went down - so I know what it can be like), but I generally think many more folks will be helping folks than holding people up for the contents of their backpacks where I'm at.  Even in a "get home" situation in a race-riot situation, unless you are guarding a building (think Korean shop owners where long arms were fully appropriate) I think a hand gun would do you fine.  Poor old Reginald Denny would've probably done just fine if he had a .38 revolver under his seat.  If he pulled an AK underfolder out from behind his seat, I wonder what would have ended up happening then?

Well thanks for the compliment - sort of. . .  I have to admit that I don't really understand what you're talking about my comments being "reactionary."

If you want to keep a battle rifle at work, be my guest - i personally just don't think that's going to add much utility to my "get home bag" - at lest in the first few hours after some event.  YMMV.

Edit:  Everyone has some great suggestions if you think it's important to add serious compact firepower to your walk home after the SHTF.  But for me, there's a lot more to the equation than "which gun?"  One thing to consider, is how the police are going to react to you?  If the power goes out and a bunch of punks start raiding Nike-Town in the next 15 minutes, I think there will be plenty of cops who haven't abandoned their duty yet.  Just something to think about.

At this point, rather than spend another grand on a new bangstick, I'd rather get a wood stove for my farm, or a hand pump for the well, or a cultivator, back blade, or seed drill for my tractor, a storage container that I could load with firewood, a basic solar set-up that'll run a freezer, another cistern, etc. etc.  You get the point.

With limited resources - everything becomes a balance of priorities and the product of your risk v. reward calculation.

Prep-on.

Who really knows?  But if you walk outside and there are a few thousand armed black swans floating down around you, a SBR PS90 hidden away in your pack would certainly make you feel a little better than just a FiveseveN on your hip, for example.  Or maybe if just a few dozen trained killers armed with rifles and grenades are running about the financial district where you work killing people, just like way back in 2008, then I would want something more than a pistol, and the knowledge to use it.

Gunmen have carried out a series of co-ordinated attacks across the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing 101 people and injuring 287 more.

At least seven high-profile locations were hit in India's financial capital, including two luxury hotels where dozens of hostages are being held.

The buildings are now ringed by troops. Gunmen are also said to be holding people captive in an office block.

Police say four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested.

Flames and black smoke billow from the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, Mumbai

As day broke in Mumbai, the situation on the ground was still confused with reports of gunfire and explosions at between seven and 16 locations.

My mode of transport leaves me with way more options than anyone piloting a tin box.

I'm good for 40 miles of hard trails on my mountain bike.

Quiet, reasonably fast and pretty much go anywhere.

As a back-up, I'm good for 20 miles hiking (with a pack).

I know my local countryside very well, which adds more options.

I think flying under the radar when TSHTF will be the best course of action.

If you start shooting, you've likely already lost.

I basically agree - who does know?  We all develop our strategy and roll the dice.  Also, my current approach might be very different depending on where I lived.  Right now, I'm in downtown Seattle.  On my Northern route out of town, we really don't have much of a problem with roving gangs of punks, honestly.   Anyway - here, in this climate, IMHO, open carrying a rifle in a power-down situation would be trading away more security than you would gain by making yourself a conspicuous target.

FYI - long before we have violence like you describe as a common occurance here, I will move my family to our rural farm property.  Hopefully, that's in the cards in the next year or so anyway.

(On a side note - I do like the PS-90 - but no SBRs here,  <=[

I feel that you lose much of its advantage when you add the longer barrel)

Agree, particuarly as to Seattle, and most other large-ish US cities, in the earlier phases of a collapse.

If I had any expectation of an urban bug-out-on-foot scenario, I'd add a Kel Tec folding carbine to the trunk of my vehicle, and hope for the best.

August, I see the point of not being visible, but there isn't a much easier task than seperating an AR Upper and Lower, which will fit nicely into a pack. (But it's also hard to argue self defense if you're shooting people at 300-400 yards).

My EDC/Get Home bag is a Maxpedition Falcon II which is about as big as I'd ever want to go.  Loaded, minus water, it's between 10-15lbs.  Light, narrow, and secure.

FWIW, My custom 14.1" pinned, mid-length light weight AR dissipator won't fit, even split.  I'm not even sure an AR pistol with an 11" bbl would work.  Not to mention, it would add about 10lbs.

Collapses happen slowly at first then all at once.

Do you really think that we have a year?

Have you been reading about the collapse of Banque de Espirto Santo?

That is Lehman Bros. times 100 dude. The next domino in line is Deuschebank who has backstopped the Euro, which was coming out of the failures of Greece and Cypriot Banks. This may cause a CDS Derivative meltdown which will be unprecented.

Have you read the rumors about Christine Legarde numerilogical forewarning of an event to take place on July 20?

Oh I know that YOU may not buy into that bullshit...BUT just because you do not does not mean that others do not. Hell the whole NAZI GERMANY OLIGARCHY was involved with the Occultist movement. They were empowered to call the shots. Even Nancy Reagan was into that occultist crap.

And George Bush I and II and John Kerry are Skull and Bones. You know...322? These people before and the current people now are involved in occultism and they are the ones whom are calling the shots.

(Yeah...yeah...I know. That's crazy. That is only something that one of those "Conspiracy Theorists" can come up with. But what is funny is that those Conspiracy Theories have been transforming into Conspiracy Facts, recently, as they are confirmed.)

But I digressed.

I am certain that Ms. Legarde has advance and insider knowledge on the strengths of the Banks in the EU. After all she is the head of the IMF. So what if she really is warning us of impending collapse, of impending doom?

(When I first heard this numerology crap I kind of blew it off. But with the collapse of the Holy Spirit Bank in Portugal...maybe there is something there. The Book of Revelation said that in the final days the Holy Spirit will be removed from the Earth??? Maybe it is a parallel, a Double Entendre. After all God does have a sense of Humor. They will neither be able to buy or sell without the mark of the Beast.)

What if they declare a Global Bank Holiday to reset? What will the World be like on Monday Morning, July 21, when the ATMs do not work, the Gasoline Pump are not refilled, and the Food runs out?

That is NINE DAYS AWAY. I am not writing that the collapse is going to develop in this particular manner. BUT IT CAN.

If you are not where you plan to be on July 21 then you are going to have to Bug Out to get there.

It can happen and it will happen in the twinkling of an eye.

"Collapses happen slowly at first then all at once.................."

Yup - kinda like the Dutch Boy scenario, where he has 10 fingers and 10 toes plugging various leaks.

Maybe took 6 or so years for the 20 leaks to occur, and then............... two more appear.

And what's up with this shit from Wednesday:  "Fed plans to end bond purchases in October".

Sure, it will - look what happened to Gold after this "bombshell" - it went UP.....

Who here will bet me a dollar, that the mysterious "Belgium Bond Buyer" won't stop purchases in October?

I'm starting to think that the "economic data" that gets reported, is not "massaged", (like I have long believed), but totally fucking fabricated.

Slowly, then all at once................

Sat, 07/12/2014 - 04:45 | 4949530 stacking12321

yes, absolutely.

fed stopping bond purchases is a farce, much like the supposed "taper" of QE from 85B per month, down to $75B, down to...etc, etc.

when they are really at up over $125B per month.

yes, belgium. exactly.

Suppose that numerology stuff is true and wasn't just a joke.  Why would you assume the "event" would be a global catastrophe, rather than some small step?  To me, that assumption just makes you look shrill.

In 2007, who thought we'd still be fiddling on the deck of the USS Titanic today?

Yes, I think we've got more than a year before the entire USA collapses like a deck of cards - if it even does.  I actually tend to think it'll be more of a stair-step downward crumble for quite a while.

Hopefully, it's be longer than a year or two - however, I currently, right now today, am prepared to shelter in place for at least one full year, and within a day I could have my family, critters, and majority of our stockpiles at our rural farm - which is also well-stocked.

Could I do more?  Believe me, I'm working on it.

I just don't think that stashing a rifle at my work and training to make my walk home resemble a 1st person shooting video game is going to add very much to my resiliency.

FWIW - I do believe that there is always the possibility of a black swan event, either local, or larger.  I subscribe to the "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" philosphy - although, my "worst" may not be quite as SHTF as yours.

What are your plans/expectations btw?

Keltec Sub2k.  A rifle.  Fires 9 or 40.  Mags in different styles.  Folds up.

You get a compact rifle (not sbr) that folds up - discreet.  The gun is light.  The ammo is light.  You can carry it further.  Just fold up and pack away when not using.

You can walk down the sidewalk and nobody would realize you are 1-2 seconds from having a carbine ready to fire.  You are prepared for a first person shooter but look like just some schmo.

Then try the Kel-Tec PLR-16...a pistol that fires rifle rounds. It only weighs 3.5 pounds and is just under 18 inches total length. Add a single-point sling and your're ready to go.

You can read a review here:

http://www.gunblast.com/Kel-Tec_PLR-16.htm

These are great guns if you have to bug out in a vehicle. Their size and weight makes them very compact and easy to maneuver in a moving vehicle, or if you have to jump out and defend yourself. I have them for my girls...humping a 10+ pound weapon around for them is a bit much at this point in their lives.

You probably won't get shot at...with bullets.

This is crazy shit.

Yes, the whole point of the drill is to get some practical experience and an opportunity to test your equipment before you need to bet your life on it, like the folks in Haiti did after the earthquake...

There have been all manner of shooting stages over the years at the TVBOD.  Sometimes you use your own weapon, sometimes you are given a weapon to use.  The guy who runs the place, TJ, is an evil genius when it comes to thinking up stages to test mind, body, and equipment.  He makes sure that missed targets and incomplete stages really hurt your time/score, and that every participant is very likely to learn something.

although such a situation is very unlikely, the proper course of action for all citizens is simple.

1. shelter in place. you can hide under a desk, in a closet, or underneath a doorway.

2. landlines will still be working, since they have built-in redundancy. call 911.  explain the emergency to the best of your ability. stay on the phone while you wait for assistance.

3. wait for the authorities. they will come and rescue you. you will know help has arrived when they identify themselves during the search-and-rescue operations: "we're here to help"

that's about all. so just remember to stay calm.
