How The World Feels About Pervasive US Surveillance And Spying: One Curious Finding

Tyler Durden's picture

Perhaps the only thing more surprising that someone actually needed a poll to "discover" how the world feels regarding the NSA constant snooping of every form of electronic communication, is that a majority of the respondents in India, Nigeria and the Phillippines actually approve of having zero privacy. Oh, and the United States too.

As for the 10% of Russians who said "approve", we assume they were either seriously drunk or even more seriously hung over when responding to the poll.

There's another way to manipulate polls.  Only poll like minded people.  Like packing the house with Obama supporters and telling them when to stand up and cheer.  To the sheeple it looks like mass approval.

Pick any random audience and he'd probably have feces hurled his way.

It's all about how the questions are posed.

If the numbers are truly accurate, then I would guess that the question went something like this:

"Do you agree with the US Government capturing all electronic communication including voice calls, emails, texts, and all other electronic transmissions if it means without this surveillance, you and your family will get blown to bits in a fiery explosion perpetrated by those nasty terrorists?"

There is a name for that, and it's called a push poll.  The question is framed in such a way as to not only get the desired answer, but to also convince you of a particular viewpoint.  Polls can be used to get public opinion, but they can also be used as propaganda.  Not saying that was or was not here, 'cause you know.  'Murica 'n eagles 'n shit.  There are some dumb motherfuckers who don't have a fucking clue what is going on and still trust the government here.

EDIT:  The question wording is on the pic.  This does not look like a push poll.  We just have some dumb motherfuckers.

Geopolitically, just look at the tinderbox my brothers and sisters, the rhetoric will turn to steel, as we see in Israel/Gaza, Ukraine to follow, then China/Japan, ISIS/Iraq/Iran, and so on; then it's on like Donky Kong.

Please don't bother with the 'collapse takes a long time' BS, it has been going on for about 100 years.

As to Geopolitics, take NOTHING for granted, believe not a word from either side, for as we know banksters profit from both sides.  Follow the money, the PR firms are paid by....

It is a sad day for me really, to see my country, sink so low with regard to Freedom, Liberty and pursuit of Happiness.  Just astounding to see the fall of free markets to full on socialism.

Molon Labe, bitchezzz!

For those that are siritually inclined, God Bless.  To those that are not, Good Luck! When you rebuild your Communities, use the Constitution as your basis, that is all...

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 12:02 | 4959351 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

The constitution is outdated.  While we have a 2nd Amendment, it does not explicitly specify that the government does not have a monopoly on force.  If there is going to be any sort of government, it needs to be so clear that the citizenry is allowed to kick its ass that even questioning the citizenry's right to kick its ass results in a serious ass kicking.  There will always be people who wish to take the reins of power in any system, and those people need to be scared that they will be killed if they step over the line.

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 12:21 | 4959420 Abi Normal
Abi Normal's picture

The US Constitution RESTRICTS government rights, if it is adhered to, not like today, we could rebuild quite effectively.  Problem now is, the Constitution is in shreds, and we don't follow it, not that it is outdated; to say that is ludacris.  There have been so many socialist/progressive laws written, they now overlay the document.

Force of arms should only be a last resort, bloodshed is not the answer every time, that is anarchy.  That is all...

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 12:41 | 4959482 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

The constitution was born out of bloodshed.  There are, and always will be, people who wish to control others.  A piece of paper will not change that, and it will not stop them from achieving their goals without a very real threat of bloodshed to the sociopaths and control freaks.  They will use violence against you if it suits their interests.  To deny this is folly, and to be able to strike back makes them reevaluate what their interests are.  Mind telling me why the Constitution has been shredded?

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 12:45 | 4959497 Seer

It doesn't matter one bit as to the eventual outcome.  "Socialist" or otherwise the "perpetual growth on a finite planet" shit is going to FAIL!  Further, 3,000 years of empire collapses shows that ideologies/dogmas have no real bearing on collapse:

http://www.rexresearch.com/glubb/glubb-empire.pdf

NOTE: Glubb failed to understand the growth issue; however, the signs and the behaviors are, as he documents, pretty predictable.

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 12:50 | 4959521 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

Growth goes hand in hand with complexity.  Put Glubb together with Joseph Tainter.  Look at what drives empires.

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 13:34 | 4959669 TheReplacement
TheReplacement's picture

How could a country run by the letter of the constitution be an empire?  Ideologies/dogmas do matter.  Our founding ideology/dogma has been abandoned and that is the reason we have an empire and so the empire will collapse, growth or no growth.

An example:  Our cities are vastly overpopulated due to socialism.  Without socialism we would have a much smaller and sustainable population.  Instead of having to make it on your own or rely on the good will (or lack thereof) of your neighbors we now take some from all who have anything to give to those who do not have anything but the ability to make babies.

Someday, if anyone survives what is coming, honest historians will look back and describe socialism as the first dozen reasons for the failure of our "modern" society.

They would have chosen some other company. Actually, the company seems to indicate the data were manipulated to get a reaction among US Americans.

For US Americans, the question should have been:

-agreeing on spying of foreign countries?

-agreeing on spying 'America'?

Then, there would have some difference, greeks would not champion for privacy in one case and the last in the list would not champion for lack of privacy.

US of A would champion for both cases.

That is why US of A are in the middle: they are unable to decide over the benefits of spying on other people and being spied at the same time.

'Americans' are easy to read: they do not disagree with tyranny, they disagree with being tyrannized.

Take the whole immigration crisis.  Do any of the red team fans remember how congress passed a bill (both red and blue in Congress) with Bush's signature that requires children that enter our country to be kept here and released to a family member in the US?  Nope, it's all Obama's fault they say, he is trying to destroy this country.  Again, it's the whole rotten lot of assholes.

Of course at least 49% of US citizens would logically reply"approve"

Very strange given that India is a prime target of NSA spying:

Among the BRICS group of emerging nations, which featured quite high on the list of countries targeted by the secret surveillance programs of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) for collecting telephone data and internet records, India was the number one target of snooping by the American agency.

In the overall list of countries spied on by NSA programs, India stands at fifth place, with billions of pieces of information plucked from its telephone and internet networks just in 30 days.

Asked by The Hindu why a friendly country like India was subjected to so much surveillance by the U.S., a spokesman of the U.S. government’s Office of the Director of National Intelligence said: “The U.S. government will respond through diplomatic channels to our partners and allies. While we are not going to comment publicly on every specific alleged intelligence activity, as a matter of policy we have made clear that the United States gathers foreign intelligence of the type gathered by all nations. We value our cooperation with all countries on issues of mutual concern.”The DNI spokesman chose not to respond to questions about how the NSA managed to pick so much data from India — 13.5 billion pieces of information in just one month — especially from its telephone networks, and about whether it had received the cooperation of Indian telecom companies.

It doesn't seem so strange when one considers all the off shore help lines the nation provides.  I suppose the NSA figures that when a person in the US accesses an "english" speaking help line and it's inevitably routed out of country, it then becomes fair game therefore no reason to bother with judicial proceedings.  Not that they were that concerned about that trivial matter anyway, what with executive fiat and all.

I would hope the U.S. results would be different if people were first told how pervasive the surveillance really is (they monitor and permanently record all of your calls, emails, facebook activity, internet activity), and then asked what they think.  Most people still accept the MSM explanation that the spying is far less than it really is.  Then again, most people probably still wouldn't give two shits.

They are illigally using the laws to threaten and harrass people providing private communications (Ladar Levinson). They are bribing Microsoft to use Microsoft's own labor to install backdoors in their products. They are lying to congress.

It would be interesting to see how countries would respond to a question of whether it is OK for their government to monitor their citizens.  I think if you were to ask Americans if it was OK for China to monitor their communications, they would be quite opposed.  This is quite sad that people are so gullible as to trust the government with their well-being.

Greece might be actually the First country to abandon the West. (It already is in the East part of Europe).

If the Turks wake up as well, the game is over for NATO.

Luckily for the Banksters, the Elites in both those countries, are Either RELATED (Karaman Alis, Turkoglu aka Venizelos and all the derivitives) or in cahoots over the populations that they lord it  over them.

 possible flaw in Pew question?

"is it acceptable ..." for the US government to monitor ...

The monitoring was not adequately defined.

Possibly, for example, some were thinking of limited wiretaps with a proper court order

(to monitor actual criminals, child pornographers, financial fraud etc.).

If so, then "approve" responses from (especially) US citizens might not be completely unreasonable or unexepected.

Polling can be very precise. If the poll does not appear to be rigourous it is because it was created to be that way. PEW is not known for being unbiased.

If you really want to know something you can design a great questionaire.

If you just want to influence opinion you come up with something else...like this one.

Probably reason behind the US's 49% is because they've been well trained to think there's a Terrorist hiding behind every bush and trash can.

But if they did the maths of how many potential terrorists there are in the world, who have the brains, money, planning ability, guile, street smarts and bravery to do something big to the US, the number would probably be about 5,000, that's all. Folks, don't forget most of them drive round on mopeds and are semi-literate and getting to the US is about as hard for them as you going to the Moon.

So that's it, 5,000 against the most powerful military in the world. 5,000.....

However, fighting terrism is a vote winner so what do you expect, voters played, again, for mugs.

I wouldn't rule it out; the human mind is certainly due for an evolutionary overhaul.

With the latest advances in physics it looks like Neutrinos and Gravity waves may be new communication mediums that break loose from the constraints of terrestrial bound cables and the assorted leaches that attach themselves to them.  Quantum tunneling may also prove to be a neat site to site communications portal that completely bypasses any and all uninvited parties from listening in.  This is of course assuming we do not lobotomize or blow ourselves to smithereens toying around with the destructive potential of new physics sandboxes and the assorted rules that come with them we are just beginning to comprehend.

New technology is expensive and a wonderful way to bankrupt an adversary should they try to keep an ever present edge:  Brought down the Soviet Empire without a single military skirmish.

A government spying on its citizens irrespective of probable cause and due process is a manifestation of tyranny. This is EXACTLY the kind of oppressive government overreach the founding fathers were trying to prohibit, amongst other violations, by enshrining its prohibition in the Bill of Rights; insisted upon, if I remember correctly, by anti-federalists as a Sine qua non for passage of the Constitution in the first place.

In the Philippines, Nigeria and India the government is too incompetent, corrupt or underresourced to systematically abuse private information against the citizens.  This may explain the relative lack of fear for an outside power doing the spying.  They may even think that US spying would help uncover corruption..

Putin gave an interview to French media (you remember the one in which he said women can be unstable when Hillary's name came up). He did it on RT so who knows what the ground rules were but it was FAR more in depth than any US president of the past 20 or more years has ever done. They asked about Crimea, his plan to give up power, his intentions in Ukraine, relations with Merkle, Hollande and OB.

If it was a show it was a good show. If it was for real then Putin is far more open than any US official of the past 20 years.

I'm not being naive here but if one must judge on the basis of the info one can get his mitts on I'd say Putin is the good guy and Obama (if he really is the one calling the shots) is the bad guy. I suspect the Putter has a view of things to come and is simply moving on past the USA and preparing for an era of increased international trade in a dollarless world. He is trying to put Russia ahead of the pack.

The US simply cannot act in that manner until the dollar does die because to plan would destroy all confidence in the dollar. Until then we must act like a superpower. Kinda like the English Lord who is near broke but must attend functions in a tux with a worn seat.

So I walked into a grocery store in a small town in east texas.  I picked up a single bottle of $12 wine.  I waited in line about 5 minutes.  I was greeted by a cheery employee who promtly rang up the bottle of wine.  Then she looked up and said, "I Just Need Your Drivers License."

whaaa?  I am 57 years old, you don't need my drivers license!

she said, "Yes, I have to scan it"

I paused a moment, in shock, told her to keep it and walked out of the store.
