All 280 passengers and 15 crew were killed in the crash. The Malaysian Airlines jet was shot down by the BUK Missile System according to Interfax.

I hate to say it, but at first blush it would make sense that some Eastern Ukrainian found a SAM system under a rock somewhere and could have ignorantly shot at whatever was over his territory.

10k altitude? Do the rebels have fighter aircrafts or air defense missiles? Highly unlikely. BUK air defense systems are operated by Ukrainian as well as Russian army. Operating range of most sophisticated BUK is 50km. If the aircraft was really downed 60km from the Russian border that would mean blame the Ukrainian airforce.

Sophisticated radar controlled ground to air missiles can certainly get up that high, but it takes time to train people to use that equipment.

On Tuesday, Interior Ministry official Anton Gerashchenko confirmed that two Slavyansk priests had been murdered for supporting opposition forces. “We found a grave of two priests from Slavyansk, who were tortured and killed by the Ukrainian nationalists,” Gerashchenko said. I don't rule out the possibility the militias shot down the Malaysian plane by accident, the militias captured some Ukranian anti-aircraft BUK missiles recently. New planes for what? This happens a few more times, particularly if US soil/airspace included, and you can stick a fork in the airline/air-travel industry.
Three most likely happenings:
1. The airplane 'lost contact' somehow and deviated from the flight path - causing it to be treated as hostile by the Ukraine missile batteries
2. Something inside the plane went 'BOOM'
3. Something mechanical went wrong, and Gravity won the battle.
There should be a fair amount of signal intelligence available here, as Ukraine, Russia, and the CIA have to be monitoring everything going on. The only question is whether the true sig-int will be released.
The Russians could spin this to their favor. The big headline before this happened was that Ukraine blamed Russia for downing a Su-25. Ukraine brings in the sophisticated anti-aircraft to prevent this. Paranoid Ukraine shoots down the airliner.
