First it was MH-370. Now, it appears tragedy has struck again, this time on Malaysian Airlines flight MH-17, on route from Amsteram to Kuala Lumpur, which disappeared from radar moments ago and was reportedly shot down over Ukraine. While there is nothing yet officially confirmed by the carrier, the radar tracked path of the airplane is shown below.

All reports agree that the plane crashed in Eastern Ukraine. The missile would have to come from Eastern Ukraine or Russia.
Whether the battery that fired the missile was Russian, East Ukrainian, or West Ukrainian - we may never know. As to what it means, It means that there is an overt attempt to draw others into the fight. The question of "Which Others?" depends only on who fired the missile.

If you are a military person who knows something about Air Defense, then you know that the local firing battery only has line-of-sight limits to what its radars can see. They gett the bigger picture by linking radars together so that each station can see what all the other stations can see.
The problem is that 1 year ago, all three were networked together and have since been split up. So in that local area everyone's radar picture is swiss cheese.
That means there is a potential for error on every side.
The Russians still have significant radar stations, and probably the most complete picture. They are probably the least likely to have shot it down in error.
