Now, it appears tragedy has struck again, this time on Malaysian Airlines flight MH-17, on route from Amsteram to Kuala Lumpur, which disappeared from radar moments ago and was reportedly shot down over Ukraine. While there is nothing yet officially confirmed by the carrier, the radar tracked path of the airplane is shown below.

Most of the hand held surface to air missiels (Stinger, SA-7, SA-9) do not have the altitude range to hit an airliner.
Only major air defence systems can do that.

Observation: From the few photos that we've seen thus far, the crash site seems fairly contained. If a plane was hit by a missile at 32,000 feet, you would expect debris stewn across several tens of kilometres. I have heard a comment to the effect that body parts are practically lying in neat rows. Weird.
Also on the positive side, the crash site is in part of eastern Ukraine, presently (apparently) under jurisdiction of pro-Russian forces, so be sure that the investigation will be rigorous and more credible than if it originated in Kiev.

Civil jets at 30some k ft are easy to identify. I see them all day. There are usually 2 contrails, sometimes 4 contrails. This was no mistake.
