First it was MH-370. Now, it appears tragedy has struck again, this time on Malaysian Airlines flight MH-17, on route from Amsteram to Kuala Lumpur, which disappeared from radar moments ago and was reportedly shot down over Ukraine. While there is nothing yet officially confirmed by the carrier, the radar tracked path of the airplane is shown below.

Yesterday the Ukrainian West army moved a BUK AA battery to the outskirts of Donansk (as close as operationally possible perhaps to the other BUK battery).

I can't see why from an operational perspective the Ukrainian West army would want a medium range AA battery so close to the front line when they have more suitable short range units at their disposal, ignoring the minor fact that no aircraft are actually attacking them!
Today it is possible that it was a BUK missile that downed the 777.
The Russian military in the area is effectively on a war footing. So the Ukrainian West army will be well aware of the very heavy Russian radar and satellite survellance over the area, perhaps the intention was to make the trajectory of the missile track very similar for a launch from both sites. With luck, as the BUK is Russian, the electronic emmisions of the battery that fired will have been picked up and they will be able to tell the world the serial number of the missile.
Not forgetting that there will be a strong Russian intelligence presence in the Ukrainian army, both sides.
