Consumer Confidence Slumps To 4 Month Lows, Biggest Miss Since Dec 2012

Tyler Durden's picture

This won't help the animal-spirity, growth-is-here, stocks-are-at-all-time-highs-so-that-must-mean-we're-doing-awesome meme that is so often propagandized to the world. UMich consumer confidence for July tumbled to 81.3 (missing expectations of a resurgent 82.9 by the most since Dec 2012) - its lowest since March. Current conditions improved modestly but more worrying is the 3rd month in a row of dropping hope for the future. The Fed may be particularly concerned as 1-year ahead inflation expectations are hovering at highs since Aug 2012.

Misleading headline. It's still at an exceptionally high level. If you're looking for signs of economic weakness, you won't find it in this graph.

They said it's noise.

Either these academics at the Fed are lying or out of touch with reality.

Every time I going out to eat, paying for a government service, electricity and gas as well as shopping it's getting very noisy.

'Tha connedsumer' is apparently a manic-depressive basket case, swinging from wild euphoria to deep depression month to month.

This is fantastic news - this means consumers aren't overconfident, therefore no bubble, therefore, it is safe to buy heavily at these levels.

What If Janet Yellen Is Wrong? - The New York Sun

Turns out, though, many of America’s largest corporations have been using low-cost money not to increase their workforce but to buy back their own stock in equity markets According to a study released in late June by the chief market strategist at brokerage firm LPL Financial, Jeffrey Kleintop, companies purchasing their own shares are the single biggest category of stock buyers. Not only can companies use buybacks to raise their share price, they can also push up the earnings-per-share number (even if earnings are flat) by reducing the amount of outstanding shares.

If they're gaming the markets they're gaming the UE number as well.
