Three More Cases Of Most Deadly Form Of Plague Found In Colorado

Tyler Durden's picture

It has been quite a week for geopolitics: first the BRICs openly defied the legacy developed world system with the formation of a BRIC bank and the creation of a $100 billion currency reserve, promptly followed by the latest and most severe round of US sanctions against Russia, followed even more promptly by the tragic disaster of flight MH 17 which sadly will turn out to be nothing but yet another provocative attempt to unleash war and change the Russia-European energy balance of power, masked by public fury at the death of several hundred innocent bystanders. And speaking of innocent bystander deaths, nothing tops Israel's decision to roll out the tanks into Gaza just hours following the Ukraine tragedy, and sending the death count on the Gaza side soaring and well into the 300s. All in all - a very disturbing week, which however nobody who was looking at the S&P 500 would realize.

It has also been a very busy week for viral epidemiologists, who have been following the ongoing Ebola epidemic in West Afrca, which has claimed over 600 lives by now and has become the worst Ebola breakout in history, with anxiety and dread. But what may soon be even bigger news is what we reported a week ago, namely that a Colorado man is infected with the rarest and most fatal form of the pneumonic plague, an airborne version that can be spread through coughing and sneezing.

Shocked by this development, the state was working to investigate the source of exposure and to identify those who may have been exposed through close contact with the individual, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in its statement. “Any individuals exposed will be recommended for antibiotic treatment." Alas, that may be futile, because while untreated plague is fatal, antibiotics have to be given within 24 hours of the first symptoms to reduce the chance of death. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache and chest pain, along with a pneumonia that develops rapidly causing shortness of breath, chest pain and bloody mucus, according to the CDC.

Since there is no vaccine available for plague in the US, one can understand why the authorities are doing their best to prevent a panic: Colorado officials recommended that residents keep pets away from wildlife, especially dead rodents. The plague can spread from animals after a large die-off of prairie dogs, when fleas with the bacteria seek new hosts, according to the state. "The message we’re trying to get out is that the plague bacteria is present here in Colorado, and to take necessary precautions to avoid getting infected."

Alas, the message appears to not have gotten out in time. According to Bloomberg, things in Colorado are about to get worse as three more plague cases have been found in Colorado, a week after the first infection of the deadliest form of the disease was reported in the state in a decade.

The man initially reported with pneumonic plague on July 11 is hospitalized. Two of the new cases also had pneumonic plague, while the third had a milder form. All four cases may be linked to the original man’s dog, which died from the illness, state health officials said. Or they may not.

The good news is that the people newly-found to be infected were treated with antibiotics, recovered, and are no longer contagious. Health officials suspect the dog that died may been exposed to plague-infected fleas from a prairie dog or rabbit, said Jennifer House, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment department.

The bad news, is that the last time we heard about a case of plague in Colorado, that too was supposed to be the last one. But that won't prevent the authorities from attempting to talk down the spread in cases:

There are three main types of plague. Septicemic plague occurs when the bacteria proliferates in the bloodstream. Bubonic plague takes hold underneath the skin. Pneumonic plague, the most serious, can be spread through coughing and sneezing and occurs when the bacteria enters the lungs.

Plague in all of its forms usually infects an average of seven people yearly in the U.S., and is found mostly in the western states of Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The disease is transmitted by fleas, which pick up a bacterium called Yersinia pestis in infected animals such as chipmunks, prairie dogs, ground squirrels, mice and other mammals.

“While this is not a daily, weekly, or monthly occurrence, it isn’t without precedence,” said Jim Siedlecki, director of public information of Adams County, where the original victim lives, in a telephone interview. “A case of plague where fleas and prairie dogs are involved isn’t earth shattering for Colorado.”

What about four cases?

In any event, we are confident that along with the surge in other tragic news from around the globe in the past week, this too will at most send the stock "market" to even higher all time highs.

The mortality chances are greater for those who get a vaccine to counteract the effects of this disease rather than being infected by the disease itself. Additionally, Americans are extremely dependant on prescribed medications for any sort of illnesses and, totally addicted to over-the-counter medicines (the weakest species in the human race indeed).

Prairie dogs are people too, according to those in Boulder, CO, and therefore, by extension, plague is people too.  Never mind that the risk of plague from prairie dogs has been mentioned more than once or twice, regarding Boulder's almost religious protection of those rodents.

The problem is if those other three didn't infect anybody while they where sick.  That man was reported to have it last week and now they are finding others.  Whom to say there isn't more.  And it is a dangerous disease.  Because how many of us go to the doctor if we are coughting or have a running nose etc. etc..  Most of the first sings of the disease sounds like a cold.  And lets say you wake up one morning thinking you have a cold, you take some medicine and go to work for 8 hours or more then you come home symptoms are kinda controlled but you still are sick and then go to bed.  You wake up the next morning a little worse and take more medicine and such and go to work.  By then your already have been infected for over 24 hours and  through your coughs and sneezes have probably infected people at work or in your area.  And antibiotics won't work now because you are over the 24 hours.

They don't have this controlled, not by a long shot.

Best thing to do if you have those symptoms is to immediately fly to Washington and go see your state Representatives and Senators. Glad handle everyone else you meet, do the lobbyist circuit and do not forget the obligatory vist to the IRS. It is almost certain they want to collect something from you.

If you are still on your feet the next day, a tour of the NSA facilties in Mclean is another must see, must do for any Washington visitor. The Pentagon does not welcome visitors but a quick walking tour of the parking lot (several dozen loops between 0630 and 0900) is good for the constitution.

A four-star general might agree with you about the biowarfare test.  He specifically mentioned pneumonic plague.  He has a few other interesting things to say about NWO plans:

-The Mexican invasion will only get worse.  It's part of a plan to cause economic collapse and social chaos, and make it easier to bring about the North American Union.

-The dollar will be shunned by the end of 2015.

-America will cease to exist in 2017.  They will close the exits shortly thereafter.

-They are planning mass slaughter of Americans.  Mercs, drones, indirect kill, sink anyone who tries to escape.

-They go to Orwellian lengths to make sure the drone operators do not grow a conscience.

-When he refused to swear that he would kill Americans on US soil, goons escorted him out of his office and TPTB started fucking with his life.  To any high-ranking officers out there, which would be the greater sin:  Violating an oath made to people who laugh at their own oaths, or failing to infiltrate a conspiracy to kill tens of millions of Americans?  Note:  The oath is just the beginning.  At some point they will ask you to do something truly evil.  They only trust sociopaths.  So maybe don't even take their oath, or take it but then start taking names and making bugout plans.  Let your conscience be your guide.

Nostradamus was credited to have cured the pneumonic plague. But in reality what he did was prescribe vitamin C rich plants and cleanliness. as people get poor based on political corruption they double up on housing to split costs. Disease spreads. Take a cue from Nostradamus.

Three drops off bleach (chlorine) in a spray bottle is a cheap and effective disenfectant which also can be used to purify water. Use for doorhandles, telephones, toilet seats anywhere the human hand or body touches. Wash sheets and blankets on a regular basis (guys learn to do this once a week).

As for vitamin C you should be taking at least a multivatin daily with minerals such as Centrum Silver (cheaper generic fine too) in any event. I do take 500 miligrams extra in chewable form to boost immunity.

These are all things you should be doing anyways but now it is more important than ever and a penny of prevention and 1/2 hour a week in time avoids a needed pound of cure.

Sat, 07/19/2014 - 23:57 | 4978991 Miffed Microbio...
Miffed Microbiologist's picture

Sorry but centrum silver is garbage. Inorganic minerals are unabsorbable so you are supplementing the sewage system. Don't waste your money. Plants naturally chelate minerals to their absorbable form so if you eat plants grown in mineral rich soil, all your needs are met. Note, conventional farming is grown in mineral deficient soil so either eat organic or purchase from a farmer you can trust.

I take vit C as well but only natural acerola in complex form. I have heard Camu Camu is a great source too but I haven't tried it. Synthetic vit C may be cheaper and chemically similar to natural C but it is in an artificially reduced form. Heat destroys vit C so your pasteurized juices have virtually none.

I would not be quite so germaphobic. If you keep your body healthy, those pesky microbes hanging out on door handles won't be too much of a problem. I have worked with bacteria that have killed countless people in 30 years. I respect them and am careful but I am not paranoid or I couldn't do my job.

Miffed - Agree organic eating of plants is best for health but you are in the minority. Show me any research how multivitamins are not absorbable. I chew mine with three tums for calcium. I hate eating most vegetables in any event.

I am no phobic about germs. Let's just use our left hands to wipe our ass like in the olden days and throw out anti-bacterial soap.

While I commend you on choosing organic farming and great mineral and enzyme content they contain, this is the platinum standard and one few can pack up and do overnight. Or how many can afford $9 a pound grass fed-beef? Let me guess your retired and have time on your hands or money to eat organic. I am trying to be realistic here for working people. You can chew your vitamins or take them in liquid form for better absorption. Want to know if they are not being absorbed? Your piss will be dark yellow.

Absorbability of minerals varies widely. For example, magnesium oxide is very poorly absorbed. The vitamin pill manufacturers like it because it is compact, but you are much better off with magnesium citrate, chloride, or some type of chelate. Miffed's observations are correct in the case of magnesium oxide. Most is not absorbed, especially if you are older and produce less stomach acid.

The reason your piss is dark yellow is because your body cannot process synthetic vitamins and your liver and kidneys have had to go into overdrive to remove them from your system.  This is not a benefit, this is a potential cause for harm.  While your liver and kidneys are busy removing excess vitamins that are unusable, they are NOT able to perform the other functions that benefits your both, including hormone production and removal of all the other waste in your system.  Vitamins require enzymes and minerals and a careful balance in order to by synthesized.  Supplementation is a surefire way to develop excesses of certain vitamins and minerals and throw your body out of balance.

The vitamins and supplements market is a racket, and the same people who are selling you the industrial-farmed mass-produced and over-processed foods in grocery stores nationwide, are then trying to sell you more processed synthetic vitamins to make up for the deficiency.  You've been scammed twice, my friend.  By the same people who sold us the housing boom and the idea that debt leads to perpetual growth.  In fact, they are all inter-related.  Cheap oil has lengthened the food supply chain and made processing/preserving a whole different game than it was in our grandparents day.  See the ZH article from a few days ago on our food supply chain.  It is owned by the corporations backed by the banks.  The foods Americans eat are void of nutrients, and media has done a good job of scaring them into self-prescribing supplements and running to big pharma to fix ailments caused by nutritional imbalances and lack of exercise.  Articles abound of "Vitamin XYZ is good, symptoms of deficiency of XYZ are fatigue, skin problems, (fill in other symptoms that occur for just about ANY nutritional imbalance), so you should supplement with ABC Corp's vitamins available on".   People are so busy figuring out which supplement to take on the computer while digging their obese hands into a bag of cheetoh-puffs, they can't see they are slowly killing themselves.

Furthermore, the quality-food-is-only-for-rich-people argument is only partially sound.  Indeed, someone who is in extreme poverty gets stuck in a grains-only diet for the most part.  But most Americans who eat crap on a daily basis also have cable TV and an iphone.  16 oz of nacho cheese Doritos are $4 washed down with a $2 soda.  OR you can have a lb of grass fed beef for roughly the same price.  Its about lifestyle choices.

I understand that severe financial hardship makes eating well difficult (thank you FED, for food inflation), I have been there.  But lets face it, most people can afford to eat better quality if they re-arrange their priorities.

I made the decision awhile ago to cut out other expenses and make 1) shelter 2) quality nutrients my first priorities.  The cable got cancelled, the ads for plastic stuff from big box stores went straight to the trash, and I started focusing on being a healthy human being instead of buying consumer goods and entertainment that wasn't enriching my life.  Yes, this means you might have to, GASP!, prepare your food at home, as in, actually put seasoning on a dead animal and put it in the oven, not just rip off the celophane wrapper and nuke it for 3 minutes.  You might have to read a book instead of watching HBO too....

Actually one of my jobs was working for a Salk Institute researcher who was doing serum analysis on people all over the world comparing vitamin absorption. I ran the HPLC on the serums. The main things I tested for was retinol, gamma and alpha tocopherol, Q10, lycopene, B vitamins and vitamin C. We also did amino acid analysis. The reason I came down so hard on the Centrum silver is that we found those taking it and other synthetic non food based vitamins had NO detectable levels. Compare to everyone they were the worst. We had a group of 50 regular Americans do one study. First I ran a base line. Then we had them take Centrum in various doses. Absolutely no peaks could I find no matter what concentration. We concluded Centrum was garbage. The only other vitamins that did well were food based. Out of the 1000s of analysis I did, Americans had the worst profiles and the best were Japanese. I got to the point where when I watched the peaks I could guess the nationality. I knew our SAD in America explain a lot of our bad health.

The best profiles were raw vegans that ate organic and took no supplements. Off the scale high in antioxidant readings. All were in the 99 percentile. However, their amino acid profiles were atrocious. Severely deficient in numerous essential amino acids. I joke that I am a raw vegan that eats some meat because this is the best balance I could come up with.

After working at Pantox, I tossed all my vitamin supplements. Because we did a lot of work for the Linus Pauling Institute I was impressed by vitamin C supplementation. I was shocked at the results of intravenous
Vit C in severe flu and cancer patients ( cannot be achieved by oral). Some were miraculous responses.

Much of what I posted here is based on my experiences. Most of the research was published but since the company is no longer in operation, I'm not sure where to find it. This was 15 years ago.

I am not retired and work full time. 90% of my food is either grown be me, traded with neighbors or bought and farmers markets. I grow my own meat chickens and turkeys. Like you I cannot afford organic beef. We used to eat it once a week. Now once every few months. I have a friend if I work in his vineyard he will trade lamb and wine for my labor. I have gotten creative to eat as well as I do. I can't afford to shop at Whole Foods except occationally for the few items I can get at no other place. Vegetables are the key to health. There is no way to get the equivalence in a pill.

By the way chewing Tums is not good for you. For one thing that is just chalk. Also you are neutralizing stomach acid which is needed to absorb and digest your food. One of the key findings with people with C. Difficile infections is the use of anti acids. They should be avoided like the plague.

You guys are cracking me up; vitamin C deficiency is incredibly rare in the US and typically happens to individuals with other problems, eg alcoholics. We need only a tiny amount of it and anything extra is useless. One does not "boost their immune system" by taking doses beyond the minimal requirements. It's like having gas in your car; as long as there is some in the tank the motor will run well and problems happen only when you run out.

Whenever I have a patient on multiple supplements I try to take them off. The supplement industry is a huge scam and some of those herbs/extracts have some toxicity or potential drug interactions.

Oh, Miffed.

Replacing one myth with another...tsk tsk tsk.

Plants will not grow in mineral deficient soils, simple as that. These minerals are ELEMENTS that are found in mineral fertilizers along with micro elements in certain ratios. Only ELEMENTS cross the osmotic membrane in roots to nourish the plant.

The much famed "Organic" relies on micro-flora bacterias in the soil to convert the organic compounds like horse-shit, garbage, and composted waste into these ELEMENTS that the plant can use. Elements are elements. Period. The plant cares not one whit where they come from because there is no secret mojo to horse shit.

If the micro-flora in the ground are insufficient to convert these compounds into ELEMENTS, the plants will be malnourished and with organic farming there is no way to control which elements are present in adequate supply for the different stages of plant development.

Mineral salt fertilizers do exactly that by using mass spectrometry to examine what mineral uptake is needed and when to achieve maximum growth rates. This allows minimum use of salts so plants thrive and there is no excess of run-off which is not the case with "organic" farming.

Botany is a science and to hear a micro-biologist advocate witchcraft style farming is distressing to say the least.  :O

By all means, if you have animal waste to convert and proper composting areas and soil rich in bacteria, then organic farming makes sense to use what you have to enrich the soil, but be aware that proper soil PH must be maintained because mineral uptake is highly PH dependent and a narrow range must be maintained to avoid mineral "lockout" which will prevent the plant from using minerals no matter how much is available.

Shit has no mojo. Elements do.

I have been a hobby gardener my entire life; and I regard this organic craze as a farce and a fraud. Either the plants get the minerals they need to produce fruit or they don't. They don't care where it comes from. Adding Triple-13 to my garden is not tantamount to poisoning my crops.

shovelhead & thatthingcanfly,

Amazingly enough you both sound as if you belong to the Industrial Farming Complex.

One question; before WW2 and wide usage of non-organic fertilizer, how were farmers able to provide for the masses? We are talking thousands of years guys. Before mass shipping, supermarkets, and agribusiness. Who owns those anyway...

Please do not bring in Mayan collapse as removal of nutrient laden canopy = demise.

Secondly, the long term effect upon the microbial structue of the soil with commercial non-organic fertilizer renders the soil dead. Thus reliance upon chemical fertilizer and persticides, due to weaker plants. Cuba's removal from USSR's petroleum based fertilizers and amazing agricultural blossoming is a prime example of success. Nevermind the abrupt recovery of wetlands, outlets, shoreline, & runoff areas, in Cuba. A transition time yes. However, rtansition to self reliant, not dependent. We need no PharmaSoil Addiction were we grow. A true garden, large or small, can feed itself. History readily shows. We will all get to watch when dollar tanks and you two are scooping poop to foster soil recovery. Me, I'll just be pickin' and snickerin'. The garden scrap compost piles with no manure will be all that is needed, and seeds from what is growing right now... so easy.

Without that data, every time you encountered a title as used above, you would be logically lead to believe there had been an accrual of cases. That is I read the title once, I go to another web site, it uses the original article as a feed and there your read it again: "three more cases" have occured.  The poor title is, then, by nature, incendiary and terroristic, unless that is your intent.
