Governor Perry Deploys 1,000 National Guard To Border, Denies "Militarization Of The Border"

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears Texas Governor Rick Perry has grown weary waiting on the President to dictate the next steps in the immigration debacle and taken things into his own hands. As The Monitor reports, an internal memo from another state official’s office said the governor planned to call about 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the Rio Grande Valley - at a cost of about $12 million per month. State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa exclaimed, "all these politicians coming down to border, they don't care about solving the problem, they just want to make a political point." However, state officials were careful to point out that "this is not a militarization of the border." Nope, not all...

As The Monitor reports,

Texas Gov. Rick Perry plans to announce he will activate the Texas National Guard at a news conference Monday in Austin, said state Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen.

Hinojosa did not have details of the effort, but an internal memo from another state official’s office said the governor planned to call about 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the Rio Grande Valley — at a cost of about $12 million per month.

..

The troops will join the Texas Department of Public Safety in its recent surge to combat human smuggling and drug trafficking amid the influx of mostly Central Americans illegally crossing the Rio Grande. Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus announced the $1.3 million per week effort last month.

State leaders approved funding for extra DPS troopers to fill in gaps in Border Patrol coverage in the Valley as the federal authorities were overwhelmed with an influx of children and families from Central America. The state officials feared Mexican drug cartels might exploit the situation to move their own drugs and human contraband while Border Patrol attention was turned elsewhere.

...

“All these politicians coming down to border, they don't care about solving the problem, they just want to make a political point,” he said.

...

“This is not a militarization of the border,” the memo states. “The DPS and the National Guard are working to keep any drug and human trafficking south of (U.S. Highway) 83 and with the goal of keeping any smuggling from entering major highways to transport East/West/and North.”

...

“It is not clear where the money will come from in the budget,” the memo states, adding that Perry's office has said the money will come from “non critical” areas, such as health care or transportation.

We await President Obama's executive actions to take care of this... time to roll out the SWATified vehicles...

Perry would like to be President.  He should have activated the National Guard Months ago, maybe years ago.  For that matter every Texas Guard unit could have done their annual training by patrolling the border throughout the entire year.

Note to Perry:  Why did it take you so long to act deciseively?  You aren't ready to be President if you react this slowly.

Do you really think this is going to last? Would anyone like to take odds on how long it will be before Obama "nationalizes" the Texas National Guard? Do you really believe that Obama won't do everything in his power to keep the flow of illegals coming? It's the center-piece of his Cloward-Piven move. Nothing, and I mean nothing, must be allowed to get in the way of that. Everything else is secondary.

Look I'm ok with legal immigration as long as the labor market can support it (Which it can't right now.), and the people immigrating are willing to support freedom and the constitution (Which they have no idea of and only care about goodies, and working for 1/4 the prevailing wage)

They should have done this years ago, they need more troops.   If .gov is worried about my "security" why has the border been open for decades? (suitcase nukes, pneumonic plague anyone)  If .gov cares about me being able feed my family why do they keep depressing the labor market with even more workers.

Build the fence already.  Secure the border.

Of course when your country is controlled by a bunch of Globalist Oligarch puppets, it doesn't happen.

I only want them there to stop the current invation and they build the gosh darn fence alread.  They wanted 4 billion for the current flood, and that would be recurring.  The fence would only cost 2 billion ONCE.

A fence is designed to slow an attacker, not stop them, in the hopes of increased detection time. Good luck keeping an eye on hundreds of miles of fence in time to do anything but repair the hole.

No amount of security will keep out a determined attacker, and walls work both ways.  It doesn't take much to turn a fortress into a prison, so be careful what you wish for.

LEGAL immigration is what is KILLING the old America.
Legal immigration is now almost totally from Asia, Latin America and Africa. All of these groups are HOSTILE to the founding stock of this nation. Just look at Silicon valley now, started by Whites now being taken over by Asians. Supporting LEGAL immigration is SUICIDE for Whites.

The problem here is you assume that those people in government, namely the politicians actually "Care" about you. They don't. All they care about are those little numbers that are on the voting ballot each election to justify them having to sit there and do very little. Hispanic immigrants are a unique kind of immigrant as both the Democrats and the Republicans can directly benefit from their political affiliations and beliefs. One the one hand you have a group of people that often vote for expanded welfare services (which directly benefits them) which helps Democrats. On the other you have a socially conservative, low-skill workers that benefit Republicans on social-conservative issues.

Obviously the losers here are poor white people and a vast vast VAST number of Blacks. I'd even argue that illegal immigration single handidly is destroying any prospects blacks have for work, or getting out of the ghetto.

This is mostly from just observation as an immigrant to the US living in Los Angeles.

That is very true, and I agree.

But, since we have such a nice safety net here by third world standards, the attractiveness of coming here is too great.

In a perfect world we could have a border that was freely accessible.

The shitty thing is that each of these solutions requires more government.  Which was probably the plan all along.
The one bright (albeit somewhat dim) spot is that this is a state taking the action and not the Feds.

Just another shitty setup caused by government that is fixed by even more government.

Not exactly a libertarian paradise.

thats the problem right there, the 'social safety net(hammock)'. Get rid of the welfare state, this problem goes away. No free housing, free food, free education, free welfare money, free healthcare, etc. You may have a high standard of living by most americans standards, but it will be head and sholder above 90% of the rest of the world, which is why they come hear- they can get it for free. That, in combination with ending this farcical war on drugs should take care of it. Our 'war on drugs' is why these people are living in war torn third world hell holes. Living amidst all this US-caused violence, and knowing a lifetime hammock of entitlements is available, of course they are going to come in droves. ANd im not a big fan of using the national guard, isnt neccessary if we take the right consitutionally minded action. Its a slippery slope, using the military for this. Posse Comitatus was written for a very good reason, basically so no US president could ever do what lincoln did again, and Obama has said he is a big Lincoln fan

Enforcing basic laws = militarization?
Coast Guard stopping boats from Cuba = militarization?
Keeping an eye on imports to make sure they don't contain rocket launchers and bags of heroin = militarization?

We should call this the war against written language. I'm not illegally practicing medicine without a license; I'm an undocumented doctor. I'm not a drug dealer; I'm an undocumented pharmacist. It's the same basic argument. Amphetamine with a prescription is called Dexedrine, and it is dispensed by a pharmacist. Amphetamine without a prescription is called speed, and it's dispensed by an undocumented pharmacist. What's the difference?

I don't care if I get downvoted into oblivion about this, but militarizing the borders is the classic "we need more government to solve a government-created problem".

Illegal immigration is caused by two phony wars: the war on drugs (why the cartels have power in the first place) and the war on poverty (the welfare state that illegals seek to game). How about instead of militarizing the border we end both of these wars instead?
