Europe Agrees To Disagree Over New Russian Sanctions

Tyler Durden's picture

As usual, Europe is talking out of both sides of its mouth (or other orifices). On the one hand, we are told:

  • EU foreign ministers failed to agree new sanctions against Russia at a Brussels meeting

And on the other hand:

  • Dutch minister says EU imposing new sanctions on officials over Russia

So - which is it Europe?

The FT reports from 1052ET...

EU foreign ministers failed to agree new sanctions against Russia at a Brussels meeting on Tuesday and instead tasked their diplomats to explore possible wider-ranging measures this week.

Although such measures could include cutting off access to Europe's capital markets and an arms embargo, they would be contingent on whether Russia fails to cooperate in the future, not on past behaviour - like ties to the downing of MH17, reports the FT's Peter Spiegel in Brussels.

And The AP reports at 1054ET...

Dutch minister says EU is imposing new sanctions on officials over Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The Germans remain the most anxious of the repurcussions...

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that while Berlin was still willing to talk with Russia, greater economic pressure was needed to make Moscow change course.

"I say we remain open to defusing the situation with all political and diplomatic means but it will be necessary to accompany this willingness with higher pressure, which also means sharper measures," he told reporters on arrival.

And Britain the most aggressive...

Britain's new Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he would urge fellow ministers to "send a very clear and strong signal to Russia today".

Along with Lithuania...

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said it was "time to name names" and to put Ukraine's breakaway republics of Luhansk and Donetsk on the EU's list of terrorist organizations.

Id say theyve already responded. They are making more gas deals with china. The russians will never have trouble selling their oil and gas, even if it isnt to the europeans. The euro govts will end up shooting themselves in the foot following the USs lead on this one. Right now, russia needs europe as a customer only becuase the infrastructure to move large ammounts to china isnt complete yet. In a few years, russia will be able to sell all it can pull out of the ground to the chinese, and they can tell europe to fuck off. Im not one of the Putin cheerleaders on here, but i will give the guy credit, he is thinking long term

Who here thinks Europe is going to take a principled stance instead of refusing to have their gas cut off?

The Euro-greens have painted the continent into a corner, and Europe will continue to be bitch-slapped by Putin until they get their energy house in order.

Go ahead Europe, grow a pair and ban all trade with Russia?

Oh wait, it seems that since this global warming thing might have taken some time off (where is Flak anyways?) they might want some heat this winter.

We will not allow Frankfurt to usurp our God-given right to be Europe's financial center, and its center for the Yuan (CNY/RMB) exchange.  If we have to, we will disrupt any and all EU relationships and alliance by any covert and overt means at our disposal.  You should know by now, that after all these centuries of ongoing feudalism, the UK is still best equipped with covert means.  The damn Yanks might have the tech and the toys, but we got the connections and human intel.  As do our kosher friends and their global army of Sayanim, whom we've wholeheartedly supported since the Balfour Declaration.  If we can't rule the waves, we'll waive the rules.   Heil Britannia!

Not surprising: Britain has an interest in Brussels having less of a say or breaking up the EU all together.

So all they have to do is push for very tough sanctions along with US.

Germany, Italy, France will not like it and we are heading for the perfect EU storm, also putting an end to the EURO...

This leaves "investors" with one less alternative to the US Dollar and will "save" the US dollar for another couple of years.

This is simply how Europe works.  Look at the history of Europe.  The Germans are the only people to watch.  The British are doing their usual thing.  As they reallly don't have a dog in this fight, they can speed up, slow down and change directions with ease.  Their posturing doesn't mean much.

The French will always be French, and take their cue from the British.  The only real leadership will come from the Germans.

At best, the Russians can hope to slow down the deteriorating relations with the Germans if they nip their support of the Pro-Russians in the Ukraine.  If they try to increase their support, expect the Germans to apply more pressure.

The Dutch don't matter.  They never have.
