US Releases Satellite Images Allegedly Proving Russian Shelling Of East Ukraine
A week after Russia revealed photos of Ukraine deploying Buk missiles in the east as well as radar proof of Ukraine warplanes in the vicinity of MH-17, the US has yet to present any of the incontrovertible evidence supposedly in its possession that proves it was the separatists who shot down the plane, a narrative which has already propagated through western media. Instead, several hours ago the US. Office of the Director of National Intelligence released satellite images taken by the private civilian company Digital Globe (and thus not government sourced), which US officials say offer proof that Russian forces have been shelling eastern Ukraine in a campaign to assist rebel groups fighting Ukraine’s government in Kiev.
The WaPo reports:
The grainy photographs, taken between Wednesday and Saturday, are labeled as indicating fire from multiple rocket launchers inside Russia and targets they have struck inside Ukraine. The Pentagon and State Department first accused Russian artillery of firing directly into Ukraine on Thursday. The charges were repeated Friday, although no evidence was offered.
The high-altitude images released Sunday “provide evidence that Russian forces have fired across the border at Ukrainian military forces, and that Russia-backed separatists have used heavy artillery, provided by Russia, in attacks on Ukrainian forces from inside Ukraine,” according to labels on the pictures by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The most recent photograph, taken Saturday, shows what is described as “blast marks” from rocket launcher fire on the Russian side of the border, and “impact craters” inside Ukraine.
A photograph labeled as taken Wednesday shows a row of vehicles described as “self-propelled artillery only found in Russian military units, on the Russian side of the border, oriented in the direction of a Ukrainian military unit within Ukraine.” On the other side of the border, “the pattern of crater impacts near the Ukrainian military unit indicates strikes from artillery fired from self-propelled or towed artillery, vice multiple rocket launchers,” it said.
One image dated July 25/26 shows what DNI claims is “ground scarring” on the Russian side of the border from artillery aimed at Ukrainian military units in Ukraine, as well as the resultant ground craters on the Ukrainian side of the border:

Curiously, the US State Department is urging those seeking objective data on this unfolding development to follow the US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, the same person who was intercepted in plotting the downfall of the former Ukraine government in a leaked recorder conversation with US assistant secretary of state, Victoria Nuland, of "Fuck the EU" fame:

Nonetheless, one does have to wonder: why would the ODNI, which shares intelligence with the NSA, have to resort to private-sector satellite imagery as proof? If there is anyone who has definitive evidence of anything happening in the world at any given moment and as seen from space, it would be the NSA.
To be sure, Russia once again promptly responded:
A Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, charged Sunday that the United States is getting most of its intelligence data on the Russian military from social media and suggested it turn to more “trustworthy” information, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.
Konashenkov denied recent U.S. statements that Russia, after first decreasing the number of troops it has deployed along the Ukrainian border, has now increased them to at least 15,000. Regular international inspections under the international Open Skies Treaty, he said, “have not registered any violations or undeclared military activity on the part of Russia in the areas adjacent to the Ukrainian border.”
The bottom line is perhaps best summarized by WaPo: "As the ground war between Russia-backed separatist forces in eastern Ukraine and government troops has escalated this past week, charges and countercharges between Russia and the West have reached fever pitch."
So while the "evidence" of the downing of MH17 by separatists will at this point likely not be forthcoming with the event having taken place over a week ago (at least not from the US State Department) aside from administration assurances that it is "common sense" that the rebels fired the missile, expect the "evidentiary" campaign to refocus back on the hostilities in east Ukraine, where as has been the case from the beginning of the conflict in March, it will be merely a continuation of the "he said, she said" propaganda war waged on both sides that the whole world has by now grown accustomed to, and where it is increasingly becoming clear that just like in the Syria conflict, the underlying motive is a very simple one: gas.

Russia did warm Ukraine that it would respond if Ukraine kept shelling Russia. I have not heard anything about casualties. Maybe there were some. And maybe it was a warning from Russia to Ukraine to stop.
A number of wounded people in villages on the border and one death I am sure of. Perhaps another 3 died a few days ago, that is when Putin called an emergency meeting of the state security agencies. Yesterday 50 mortar rounds were counted landing inside Russia, this steems from the Ukie battalions trapped by rebels right on the Russian border. Today another 40 Ukie soldiers crossed into Russia and asked for asylum and medical care. A video of them was shown, two wounded as well. In a hacked computer of the Ukie government, transcripts of Ukie emails showed a growing desertion crisis in the East. As rebels have really started to kill and wound Ukies, many have wised up and are looking to get away, and I can't blame them, if you have the stomach for the videos of destroyed Ukei Battlions, I'de run away too! I simply can't look at those pictures or videos anymore. Anyone who fancies war should see the inside of a knocked out tank or APC!
Thank god the Ukraines did it first, otherwise it would be wrong of Russia to do it.

The rebel sources inside their own friendly circles like Russian blogs are saying that indeed Russian troops have taken a number off opportunities to launch rocket and artillery strikes on Ukrainian troops along the border, in aid of the rebels who are trying to destroy the trapped Ukrainian battalions there. Self Defense Social media claims that the Russian and Ukrainians have some sort of buffer zone along their common border, sort of a neutral zone type of thing. This is first I heard of this, but that is what is being said. Anyways, the attacks are coming from inside this common neutral zone, about 2 kilometers wide. NOT from inside Russia proper. This is only a fiction, but it allows a denial. Russia is not technically firing form Russian soil. But, I believe the rebels when they say, with an eye wink, that indeed, Russia has aided them in this manner on a small scale. I am surprised this is all that Russia has done, but a 10 kilometer convoy of tucks and APCs and other equipment rolled through Rostov two days ago and has been video recorded in border villages. I watch an 8 minute youtube video taken as it left Rostov, impressive, but most trucks were covered, no tanks, but a lot of Wheeled APC, good for moving infantry around in mobile warfare. The rebels have chosen NOT to engage in static defense if they can help it, this avoids being caught by Ukie army heavy artillery and air strikes. Instead, they advance and retreat as the battle dictates, this shows a high degree of skill and contol to be able to act in mobile warfare. Ukies have been beaten very badly by this tactic, though at times Ukie forces can still advance, they are engaged when the rebels see good ground to engage. I see a very well run rebel force, impressive actually, given their being outnumbered by a vast force of plodding Ukie armored forces and infantry.

Sounds like a bunch of people who don't want to be there. Reminds me of the Battle of Grozny where captured Russian artillery soldiers had no idea where they were or whom they were fighting; they were deployed with some vague orders. They ended up being crushed by a vastly smaller force of Chechens who were displaced from the city in the earlier battle.
With a GDP per capita of less than $4000, Ukrainians male youth have little else to do.
Plus the iniital call up was for a limited duration of service. I believe ti was for a three month period. That period has now expired and the conscripts want to return home but are prevented from doing so.
On top of that there are many reports from Ukr conscripts describing the lack of logistics support. No food, limited clean water, limited ammo supplies. The conscripts themselves recornize that they are little more than cannon fodder.
What you have in Ukraine is a made up state that exists primarily in the heads of Foggy Bottom egg heads. If it is on the map it must exist. And if it exists we are free to manipulate it as we choose. That is what USSA democracy is all about.
In reality, Ukraine is a failed state, It is a bankrupt nonentity being kept alive on IMF life support with limited abilty to repay the debt it is incurring. Dut since when was government debt a problem?

Why the USG resorts to social media and commercial satellite images to make its case is very peculiar. They must have satellite images which capture the event. Per Chief of Staff of the Air Force of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant-General I.Y. Makushev : "According to our records from 17:06 till 17:21 Moscow time on the July 17 over the Southeastern territory of Ukraine, a US space satellite flew overhead. This is a special device of the experimental space system designed to detect and track various missile launches. If the US party has photos made by the satellite, please let us ask them to show them to world community for further investigation."
One suspects it is because the data they have does not suit the narrative they want to tell.

Rocket artillery (unless guided) is less precise and less economical than gun artillery. The munitions are also more bulky to transport. It's main benefit is high mobility, as launchers don't have to be buttressed (and therefore immobilized) for launch. There is no mention of the distance between launch and strike. Rocket artillery can achieve greater range. To be credible, US should address the aforementioned.

Photo 1) Who knows, but is would be strange for the Russian military to drive MRLS trucks way out into the middle of a field on their own territory.
Photo 2) They could be 2S19s, but I flipped through google and cannot find images where the Russian military has done a two-tone paint job on self-propelled guns and given the chassis the dark paint job. (Lots of drab monochromatics and camouflage though, perhaps the Ministry of Defense is hiring queers or John Deere layoffs in their planning) And if they are military vehicles, it must be someone VERY important's personal wheat field, because they're moving on the correct lines.
Photo 3) Looking at the border labels, the photo would purport to show Separatist-or-Junta on Separatist-or-Junta something or other, so why is it relevant?
Generally- impact craters cannot be used determine attack vector at such a low resolution. If the US actually released the good stuff, and backed up these bullshit blurs, they might have a case, but as it stands the US would appear to be hiding exculpatory evidence.
Rocket artillery, like Grad and MLRS systems may be less accurate than barrelled guns but it is superb at saturating an area, like a camp or collection of vehicles, destroying virtually everything in the target area (as the photos on various sites attest). It must be like entering the gates of hell to be on the receiving end of a salvo.
The problem for the Ukrainian Army is that it has lots of such systems but no military targets as the 'rebels' do not bunch up together. As they can't let them do nothing they point them at the nearest town full of civilians and fire at that instead.

What's curious about the 3 pictures is that only in the 3rd one are there any arrows showing the claimed path of the artillery shells. And in the 3rd image the firing position is from inside Ukraine.

Go-Ogle just buy the satellite data from Digital Globe on a periodic basis depending on how popular an area is. Digital Globe are the ones with access to the satellites.
And reading numberplates was so 1980s.

In image #1, you may be right about the blast marks, if that's what they are, pointing in the wrong direction. I thought the darkest mark would be where the rocket took off, and as you went further back from the firing site, the blast mark would be lighter. But the dark line in the big picture going from the positive X axis to the positive Y axis doesn't exactly match its position in the blowup.
Image 2 proves nothing.
In image 3, the firing was from within Ukraine, so at most it proves is there is a civil war going on.
In combination this evidence is extremely weak. In any event, as others have pointed out, Russia has been shelled from Ukraine so Russia is justified in firing back.

So the first two pictures are near Dibrivka. The two odd shaped bodies of water are to the east and west of the town. Looking at google map of the area shows thousands of old craters.
You can find the so called firing point south. Odd that there are still blast marks, but no track marks from the heavy vehichles that fire these rockets in the field.
This is not evidence.
Saw the lack of track marks too. Crops should be high enough by now that they would be knocked down and easily show the movement of heavy equipment.

Looking at other features in the pictures and comparing them to the current google earth views, I question the vintage of the pictures. Some areas seem undeveloped compared. The google maps are likely a year or more old, but the pictures seem even older.
The specific points showing craters, don't show such clear craters in google now. Either they are very recent, or very old. Hard to know. But other features make me suspect older.
