The "Most Significant Danger" According To Elliott's Paul Singer
While we have 'joked' about it in the past, Elliott Management's Paul Singer believes "there is one risk that stands way above the rest in terms of the scope of potential damage adjusted for the likelihood of occurrence" - an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

Not a laughing matter....
Exceprted from Elliott Management's latest letter from Paul Singer,
EMP: THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DANGER
While these pages are typically overflowing with scary or depressing scenarios, there is one risk that stands way above the rest in terms of the scope of potential damage adjusted for the likelihood of occurrence. Even nuclear war is a relatively localized issue, except in its most extreme form. And the threat from asteroids can (possibly) be mitigated.
The risks associated with electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, represent another story entirely. It can occur naturally, from solar storms that send “coronal mass ejections,” which are massive energetic bursts of solar wind, tens of millions of miles in a mere few hours. Or it can be artificial, produced by a high-altitude (at least 15 miles) explosion of relatively low-yield (even Hiroshima-strength) nuclear weapons.
Different initiators of EMP have different pulses and different effects. But the bottom line is that EMP fries electronic devices, including parts of electric grids. In 1859, a particularly strong solar disturbance (the “Carrington Event”) caused disruption to the nascent telegraph network. It happened again with similar disruptions in 1921, before our modern power grid came into existence. A NASA study concluded these events have typically occurred around once per century. A repeat of the Carrington Event today would cause a massive disruption to the electric grid, possibly shutting it down entirely for months or longer, with unimaginable consequences.
Only two years ago, the sun let loose with a Carrington-magnitude burst, but the position of the earth at the time prevented the burst from hitting it. The chances of additional events of such magnitude may be far greater than most people think.
The artificial version of EMP, a kind of nuclear attack, would require between one and three high-altitude nuclear explosions to create its effect across all of North America. It would not cause any blast or radiation damage, but such an attack would have consequences even more catastrophic than a severe solar storm. It could not only bring down the grid, but also lay down a very intense, very fast pulse across the continent, damaging or destroying electronic switches, devices, computers and transformers across America.
There is no way to stop a naturally occurring EMP, and nuclear proliferation, combined with advances in weapons delivery systems, make the artificial version a distinct possibility, so the dangers are very real.
What can be done about this risk? Critical elements of the power grid and essential electronic devices can be hardened. Spare parts can be stockpiled for other, less critical hardware. Procedures can be developed as part of emergency preparedness so that the relevant government agencies and emergency response NGOs are ready to respond quickly and effectively to an episode large or small.
Why are we writing about EMP? Because in any analysis of societal risk, EMP stands all by itself. Congressional committees are studying this problem, and federal legislation is laboriously working its way through the process. We think that raising people’s consciousness about what should be an effort by both parties to make the country (and the world) safer from this kind of event is a good thing to do.

Every electronic safe that I'm aware of has a mechanical key entry/lock back-up mechanism. I'm not going to explain here but, you can research any safe you might be interested in. However, storing electronics in a safe is not a guarantee of shielding from an EMP event. You need to be sure electronic items are insulated from any metal "container" and preferably "nested" in at least two insulated from each other metal (unpainted and galvanized preferably) "containers". Also, EVERY opening including door seals and hinges should be covered in a high quality self adhesive aluminum "tape" such as that used for duct work. Obviously, this make it difficult and expensive to open and close a safe each time thus, galvanized trash cans with TIGHT seals (and aluminum tape) become more practicle. This is a basic Faraday cage.
NOTE: Long galvanized garbage cans.
Our widespread use of technology is amongst our greatest advantages over other countries. That means we rely on it. We depend on it. And we wouldn't have a damned clue what to do next if it was ever taken away from us.
It's nice to have GPS if you like to go on long hiking trips in remote areas. But if you are utterly reliant on it, it actually becomes a liability.
Yeah, it's going to suck when we have to start asking for directions again.
Especially when your car doesn't run and the power windows won't roll down!
I can just hear the screams of people locked in their cars because they have electric locks.
Yep, we have reached that point in society.
pods
Oh, so you heard that 911 call, too? Best I ever heard. If only she had died she would have been a shoe-in for a Darwin award.
I forsee many garbage fires in NYC. It'll be funny to see the wall st'ers trudging through the sewage in the street when the toilets stop flushing too.
You will get to watch the wall streeters parachuting from on high as the high speed elevators will no longer be running.
Nevermind the big stuff, Paul would just be pissed the bond markets are down so he can't screw other countries in the meantime.
I was driving through Mexico a couple decades ago and the ol' coup deville was dying one thing at a time. I was okay with no lights and no radio, but when I couldn't roll down the windows... 100 degrees & 100% humidity... it was horrible.
Buy quadrangle maps (you do have a compass ?)
considering we have made little to no advancements on tesla's polyphase system created 100+ year ago,
a system tesla said he had wished he hadn't created because of its inefficiencies in relation to his efforts
in wireless transmission of free electricity. man made antiques break unlike the earth, the greatest store house
of capacitance in existence isolated in the vacuum of space and fed by the suns magnetism.
our current system of currents could use a complete over haul.
If only we had those notebooks?
But of course, Tesla was a crank and Edison was a hero.
But when Edison died, the Gov didn't show up to snatch his notes and effects.
I wonder why?
He wasn't a terrorist?

Houston we have a problem Server reset double post...
Not really.. an EMP might make it more difficult for Ebola to travel first class on Delta. The incubation time is 30 days and I don't know anyone that can swim from Africa to the US in 30 days.
No it's an Alan Parsons Project:

Oh, that's better than where I thought you were going with that. I thought you were going for the "Eye in the Sky" reference somehow.
You lie down with dogs...
Just keep all your paper banking receipts. You might one day feel the urge to prove how much money you used to have in there.
And keep a spare EFI chip, for your car, locked in a Faraday cage.
And in that cage you should keep a computer - any old computer, remember to keep some magnetic discs if it is that old. Face it, we all hate Win8 anyway and if everyone else's computer is fried, compatibility will NOT be an issue. You'll want a good programming language and maybe one or two of your favourite computer games. Oh yeah, in that case you'll also need a generator.
Cue that scene with Steve Martin from The Jerk. "I don't need you. I don't need anyone or anything. All I need is my remote control ..." (I really should look it up and post it but it is waaaay past my bed time. I gotta move.)
The 2 grand in my checking account will be a worthy sacrifice if it wipes out the oligarchs life savings.
On the other hand, the Au in the septic tank will still be there. Confiscate that bitches!
Long sales of EFI chips, for those who can afford to buy and stock them (in said Faraday cage).
Chip types:
Just go to the junkyard and get an ECU from a wrecked car like the one you have. Keep that in faraday cage. Some newer cars have multiple ECU's though...

You mean, Paul Singer, Vulture Capitalist?
He's got a lot more than that to worry about, assassins from many, many different originating points coming after him, for one thing!
Elliot Management Proprietary
He is right.
It is called Central Control of Financial Markets and the EMP will occur soon, only that it will be triggered MANUALLY by NSA upon order from Congress and propagated as EMP.
Let me repeat this again:
THERE IS NO FINANCIAL MARKET.
Market is suspended until further order.
Computers are being controlled by NSA by order of congress.
Either that, or its all one GIANT DARK MARKET!

That's why you need to bank at an EMP-proof bank.
Enter "Bank of Serta, Sealy and Posturepedic". Private, no snooping, questions or attitude, no fees. 24/7/365 access, no banking holiday.
I dunno. POTUS says his #1 is nuke detonation in US city. I'll go with that as the #1 most significant danger....
This is the real risk...

Ah so that's why they'll never collect from Argentina.
Or $50B from Putin.
ya that was a scary response by putin's guy. It is true though, throughout its history, Europe has had a tendency to self genocide amongst themselves every couple of generations with a huge war. Up until 1914, the US govt was smart enough to stay the fuck out of it. Nowadays, not so much. I really wish we would remove ourselves from NATO and the UN, and any and all entangling alliances we have with other countries.
Congressional committees are studying this problem, and federal legislation is laboriously working its way through the process.

Freddie Mercury or the Government. Decide. Fast.
Looks like global warming is yesterdays hysteria?
well, if they cant successfully jack up your taxes based on it, what use is it then?
Except an EMP pulse from the Sun is very real. We narrowly missed getting hit two years ago.
The Carrington event in 1859 knocked out telegraph systems, the wires sparked and some burst into flames.
If this happened today GPS, cell phones, Internet, and the electrical grid would go down in an instant.
Can you imagine today's major cities and societies without electricity? Pandemonium.
Follwoed by no potable water then no food.
Nothing we can do about it either.

Sounds lots like Detroit! Scarey!
An EMP would pretty much be game over because Nuclear power plants..more specifically the cooling ponds with thousands of spent fuel would boil over creating many Fukishima's. How much deisel fuel is on site for generators? Would they even work? The brilliance of having no long term plan like Yukka Mountain for all the nuclear waste. If not for this fact I think the world would be better off.
Like we needed yet another reason to despise Harry Reid.
What 401K ?
EMP's Elliott Management's Paul singer.
Arrest Paul Singer for financial terroristic threats.
Putin will light a EMP before resorting to nukes
what do you think an EMP is?
Actually there several distinct types of non-nuclear EMP warhead that the US, Russia, and China all have in inventory specifically for this purpose. They don't have quite the range that nuclear ICBM does, but you only need to launch them over a few major coastal cities to unleash a large scale Zombie Apocalypse.
Paul Allen's Experience Music Project?

Looks like a pretty good cage there. In the EMP, you are safe from the EMP.
And on "our" side, TPTB favor NEUTRON bombs: Less blast & heat (less property damage), more radiation (kill people and pets).
Cockroaches and most insects will survive in the blast area though, feasting on corpses.
Yeah, EMP, because detonating a nuke in space is MUCH easier than doing it on the ground.
How do you think they would get them here otherwise?
Right now, Russia seems to be the only country with a space agency that actually sends people and equipment to space.
the people part, yes, but we just put up a delta IV last night in cape canaveral. Space-x is wanting to use their equipment to start putting people up by 2016
FedEx?? (When it ABSOLUTELY has to get there!)
Send it by USPS and the war will be over before it even leaves the Country of origin!
Wonder what happens to all those digital dollars if something like tha occurs.

I often wonder why Putin doesn't take to the U.S airways and change the tide like Al-Assad did when the U.S tried to start a war with Syria. I guess TPTB learned from their earlier mistake and won't let that happen again.
I think an EMP fried all the IRS's hard drives and their backups.
Yawn
I think something might happen, unless it doesn't, which will really effect the markets, unless it doesn't, and we all need to be very afraid.... unless we are not.
So I should get a MyRA?

Will there be enough crisis actors to sell this properly?

Now I have to wrap my computer and my head in tin-foil.
Went to Walgreen's this morning and bought 10 cans of Libby's Corned Beef on sale @ $4 a can. Expiration date 10/18. I keep my food preps up to date. Suggest all do likewise.
You can put your cell phone in the Libby's Corned Beef can to reduce the EPM threat too.
@NOT: Excellent. Thx 4 the laugh. Only a ZH aficionado could come up with that. Damn I love ZH!
But only if the can is grounded. He'll want to solder a cooper wire to the can and wrap the other end around a radiator.
Um, only if the can is empty.
Good Point.

yes that was a very silly thing to type but someone had to. oh all right, okay, nobody had to say anything like that at all.
Jessica Lynch came out of retirement in West Virginia and was there guarding the cockpit.
As a threat to society an EMP is a big threat, as doomer porn, this didn't even make it move.

ya this was pretty weak doomer porn to any frequenter of ZH. Def not enough to make me go from 6 to midnight. not even make it twitch...
There has been a major military program in place for 30 years to ameliorate the impact of such a pulse. Strategic government communications links are likely already protected from this threat. Our cell phones, municipal water pumps, computers, car electronics, Diebold voting machines - not so much.
FEMA tanks and comm equipment are probably hardened against EMP pulses too.
Which is why the public discourse is so disingenuous. Spend MOAR taxpayer to protect the State (and only the State command and control mechanisms), while the individual citizen is intentionally fed to either the Zombie apocalypse or the brown-shirts.
(municipal water pumps and voting machines don't make the cut though, as they are acceptable collateral damage)
But how will I get my EBT recharged?
Your EBT will get supercharged!
"Congressional committees are studying this problem, and federal legislation is laboriously working its way through the process."
Congressional committees studying...... Now that's funny.
I worked for a congressional committee. Such a joke. Congress is set-up to maintain the status quo. It is functionally dysfunctional.
Time for the tax payers to donate to our pal 'Al' Gore's brand spankin' new anti-EMP machine! Shud be no problem for him based on the way he solved global warmin'! He's good ....reaaaalll good!
we need AMP CREDITS and an AMP EXHCANGE right NOW!!! AL!!!! save us!
I'm thinking Big-AntiEMP. A few trillion allocated to fixing this challenge would create lots of high-paying technology jobs and protect our children. I'm thinking we let the NSA do the initial set-up work, and then spin-off into its own departmental-level agency designed to protect Mericans from the threat of EMP.
You just gave paul krugman a serious woody

An EMP outside Goldman Sachs would be nice.
"The artificial version of EMP, a kind of nuclear attack, would require between one and three high-altitude nuclear explosions to create its effect across all of North America."
^ this simply isn't true, and telegraphs quite a lack of understanding of how EMP-like devices or tactics could and may be employed. EMPs in New York, Washington, London, and Tel Aiv and Jerusalem would be of great benefit to mankind.
I'll throw in LA/Hollywood as well.
:o}
I do like singer, seems like a decent guy, though all in all... his picks are monkey with a dartboard territory, just about....
True, per the analysis I've read. One nuke, high enough above Kansas, would have line of sight to both coasts. But only a few of our enemies have that capability. I would expect some lower altitude bombs launched from freight ships near our coasts by a terrorist state to be more likely.
As far as natural occurances, someone implied it would be a world-wide event. Not true, either. Geo-Magnetic Storms occur near the poles. Since the magnetic North pole is in/near Canada, North America will get a bigger dose than Europe. Eqautor dwellers should be fine. Electronics will be fine, too. GMS's don't produce the fast, high-voltage wave of a nuke generated EMP, just the longer slow wave which fries the grid. But without the grid, what use will our electronics be?
The whole natural disaster thing does not worry me. I'm more worried about all of the fucktards trying to ruin my life.
Me too.
And the shitting and vomiting and crying blood thing.
That....would ruin some of my plans.
Has anyone informed George Noory?
If this EMP the EBT happens, there will be roving bands of government employees handing out FRN's to the FSA. They could set up an EOC in front of Wal-Mart.
The Kenyan has done an unreal job controlling the levels of the oceans & brought lasting peace to the middle east! EMP's shud be a piece of cake for him! He da' man!
Bring it, I welcome an EMP (non-Nuc) to shut down the power grid for a while. Might just improve most of our situation(s). Give the war-mongers something else to focus on besides killing our sons and daughters, like not getting hung from a tree.
'EMP's fries electronic devices ....' Finally!!!! Woohoo bring it on!
EMP is very real and current IC technology is highly susceptible without any shielding. My advice get a garbage can metal and put all your electronics in it. I have one with a ham radio, batteries, torches etc as well as a tablet and cell phone just in case something is up.
The only people who are protected against EMP are the department of defence who have hardened facilities underground in double door mesh cages and their own generators. Everything else is doomed. If you have an old crystal radio or vacuum tubes great but any CMOS tech including your car is toast. There were some old 4wD that were EMP proof but they are being confiscated by the various governments.
...and make sure the trashman empties the garbage can in the truck!
Hey, you just can't say "garbage can, metal," and leave it at that! Does "said can" get grounded while contents are insulated from its walls or does the can stand on non-conducting rubber feet and act like a giant capacitor? Inquiring minds want to know.
How come no one said anything about all planes falling out of the sky, except hardened fighters and bombers?
With every vehicle's fuel pump electro-fried, spare ignition kits for autos, etc will be worthless as will all diesel-run engines. With only three days of food in the supply chain pipeline, folks will get very hungry very fast. Got tuna?
I really wonder who came up with this grounding crap first.
A Faraday cage needs no grounding to function. (But the inside contents need to be kept insulated from the cage.)
Grounding is a concept to protect humans if they touch the outside of the Faraday cage when an event happens.
That condo on the 35 floor located near a subway stop.... not so good.
Manmade EMP, nothing but a fancy way of committing suicide once all civilian reactors melt down, ring around the rosy pocket full of cesium, ashes, ashes all fall down..
It's "already priced in".
BTFATH.
Faraday cages, bitchez!
Pro Tip:
Did you know...
That if you fill your bathtub up with water and place all of your electronic devices in it, it renders them impervious to EMP?
It's true! And more fun than you'd think, provided that you unplugged them first. I didn't list that as a step for a reason. And a good one.
Once you've done it...
You'll also notice movement around you.
DO NOT be alarmed. Those are people. Interact with them. Some of them are fun and interesting.
LOL. Now watch how many will forget to place said devices into a sealed, water-proof bag.
thats what i was going for.
not that im a total luddite, i just think it would be neat if we all actually talked and did stuff together more often.
Talk? Do stuff together? Goddamn, that's just unUhhmerrikin.
I am long tinfoil.....
I don't care what has to be done! I need to be able to twitter with the Kardashians at all costs!
Aside from anything else, an EMP would totally disrupt almost all auto/truck/etc. usage. Unless you have an ancient carborated car with points your ignition, timing, and fuel injection is doa after an EMP.
Untrue. Metal structure of car Faradays the electronics. Google it.
Perhaps. I know planes and autos have endured lightning striles. But even if they do, the gasoline pumps will crap out.
Bath House Barry and a long garden hose FTW!
So let me get this straight;
We should beware of trojan black swans bearing pulse generators.
And people trust this guy with their money ?
Sure his real name isn't Corzine.
Yeah but -
President Barack Ebola is far more toxic and destructive than EMP would be, and it's happening NOW, not in some hypothetical future scenario.
Not that he's to blame for all the ills - he's the stage 3 phase of the disease, and Clintoon was stage 1, Bush Kiddie was stage 2.
So EMP would be like being told by your wife that she's been cheating on you, when you just previously found out from your doc that you have the syph (Clintoon), the plague (bush) and Ebola (this prez).
If this happens what SPF level of sunscreen shud I wear 'cause I don't want to wrinkle!?
As my "hit" list continues to grow everyday, i pray for a EMP attack.
An EMP would at least put a well needed halt to the US Gov's full spectrum dominence.
The media is full of the spread of and "accidental" release of horrendous diseases, most are probably designer. These specialists going around to help: I actually think they are collecting the shit and bringing it back to their labs, sloppily. Why? The rich are afraid of the poplulations they are extracting wealth from. There are generational plans to kill most of us. Read the Georgia Guidestones and reference the work of Bill Gates. Question why hormones are in most things as are heavy loads of antibiotics, and our resistent bugs get stronger. Be objective about flouride. Why is it there?
Now EMP: it is the coup de grace of choice. Sure its modelled, they know how it will kill. They've actually made our grid EASIER to take down over the last 20 years. The heartless wealth extraction, gasoline prices, rediculous UNaffordable healthcare act, a suicidal foreign policy. All this and more are designed to create the storyline, a convincing backstory. I don't think Putin will "do" his people. We've proven that we will "do" our people.
My only hope is enough of you will survive, if only long enough, to MAKE SURE none of the oligarchs and planners live to benefit from the imaginary world they think they are creating.
Y no K
An EMP would instantly turn 300-million Americans into Amish people. Time to study how they live.
As long as it doesn't turn them into Jewish people....
