The "Most Significant Danger" According To Elliott's Paul Singer

Tyler Durden's picture

While we have 'joked' about it in the past, Elliott Management's Paul Singer believes "there is one risk that stands way above the rest in terms of the scope of potential damage adjusted for the likelihood of occurrence" - an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

Not a laughing matter....

Exceprted from Elliott Management's latest letter from Paul Singer,

EMP: THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DANGER

While these pages are typically overflowing with scary or depressing scenarios, there is one risk that stands way above the rest in terms of the scope of potential damage adjusted for the likelihood of occurrence. Even nuclear war is a relatively localized issue, except in its most extreme form. And the threat from asteroids can (possibly) be mitigated.

The risks associated with electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, represent another story entirely. It can occur naturally, from solar storms that send “coronal mass ejections,” which are massive energetic bursts of solar wind, tens of millions of miles in a mere few hours. Or it can be artificial, produced by a high-altitude (at least 15 miles) explosion of relatively low-yield (even Hiroshima-strength) nuclear weapons.

Different initiators of EMP have different pulses and different effects. But the bottom line is that EMP fries electronic devices, including parts of electric grids. In 1859, a particularly strong solar disturbance (the “Carrington Event”) caused disruption to the nascent telegraph network. It happened again with similar disruptions in 1921, before our modern power grid came into existence. A NASA study concluded these events have typically occurred around once per century. A repeat of the Carrington Event today would cause a massive disruption to the electric grid, possibly shutting it down entirely for months or longer, with unimaginable consequences.

Only two years ago, the sun let loose with a Carrington-magnitude burst, but the position of the earth at the time prevented the burst from hitting it. The chances of additional events of such magnitude may be far greater than most people think.

The artificial version of EMP, a kind of nuclear attack, would require between one and three high-altitude nuclear explosions to create its effect across all of North America. It would not cause any blast or radiation damage, but such an attack would have consequences even more catastrophic than a severe solar storm. It could not only bring down the grid, but also lay down a very intense, very fast pulse across the continent, damaging or destroying electronic switches, devices, computers and transformers across America.

There is no way to stop a naturally occurring EMP, and nuclear proliferation, combined with advances in weapons delivery systems, make the artificial version a distinct possibility, so the dangers are very real.

What can be done about this risk? Critical elements of the power grid and essential electronic devices can be hardened. Spare parts can be stockpiled for other, less critical hardware. Procedures can be developed as part of emergency preparedness so that the relevant government agencies and emergency response NGOs are ready to respond quickly and effectively to an episode large or small.

Why are we writing about EMP? Because in any analysis of societal risk, EMP stands all by itself. Congressional committees are studying this problem, and federal legislation is laboriously working its way through the process. We think that raising people’s consciousness about what should be an effort by both parties to make the country (and the world) safer from this kind of event is a good thing to do.

Every electronic safe that I'm aware of has a mechanical key entry/lock back-up mechanism. I'm not going to explain here but, you can research any safe you might be interested in. However, storing electronics in a safe is not a guarantee of shielding from an EMP event. You need to be sure electronic items are insulated from any metal "container" and preferably "nested" in at least two insulated from each other metal (unpainted and galvanized preferably) "containers". Also, EVERY opening including door seals and hinges should be covered in a high quality self adhesive aluminum "tape" such as that used for duct work. Obviously, this make it difficult and expensive to open and close a safe each time thus, galvanized trash cans with TIGHT seals (and aluminum tape) become more practicle. This is a basic Faraday cage.

NOTE: Long galvanized garbage cans.

Our widespread use of technology is amongst our greatest advantages over other countries.  That means we rely on it.  We depend on it.  And we wouldn't have a damned clue what to do next if it was ever taken away from us.

It's nice to have GPS if you like to go on long hiking trips in remote areas.  But if you are utterly reliant on it, it actually becomes a liability.

Just keep all your paper banking receipts.  You might one day feel the urge to prove how much money you used to have in there.

And keep a spare EFI chip, for your car, locked in a Faraday cage.

And in that cage you should keep a computer - any old computer, remember to keep some magnetic discs if it is that old.  Face it, we all hate Win8 anyway and if everyone else's computer is fried, compatibility will NOT be an issue.  You'll want a good programming language and maybe one or two of your favourite computer games.  Oh yeah, in that case you'll also need a generator.

Cue that scene with Steve Martin from The Jerk.  "I don't need you.  I don't need anyone or anything.  All I need is my remote control ..."  (I really should look it up and post it but it is waaaay past my bed time.  I gotta move.)

Except an EMP pulse from the Sun is very real.  We narrowly missed getting hit two years ago.

The Carrington event in 1859 knocked out telegraph systems, the wires sparked and some burst into flames.

If this happened today GPS, cell phones, Internet, and the electrical grid would go down in an instant.

Can you imagine today's major cities and societies without electricity?  Pandemonium.

Follwoed by no potable water then no food.

Nothing we can do about it either.

An EMP would pretty much be game over because Nuclear power plants..more specifically the cooling ponds with thousands of spent fuel would boil over creating many Fukishima's.    How much deisel fuel is on site for generators?  Would they even work?    The brilliance of having no long term plan like Yukka Mountain for all the nuclear waste.   If not for this fact I think the world would be better off.

Actually there several distinct types of non-nuclear EMP warhead that the US, Russia, and China all have in inventory specifically for this purpose. They don't have quite the range that nuclear ICBM does, but you only need to launch them over a few major coastal cities to unleash a large scale Zombie Apocalypse.

I'm thinking Big-AntiEMP.    A few trillion allocated to fixing this challenge would create lots of high-paying technology jobs and protect our children.  I'm thinking we let the NSA do the initial set-up work, and then spin-off into its own departmental-level agency designed to protect Mericans from the threat of EMP.

An EMP outside Goldman Sachs would be nice.

"The artificial version of EMP, a kind of nuclear attack, would require between one and three high-altitude nuclear explosions to create its effect across all of North America."

^ this simply isn't true, and telegraphs quite a lack of understanding of how EMP-like devices or tactics could and may be employed.  EMPs in New York, Washington, London, and Tel Aiv and Jerusalem would be of great benefit to mankind.

I'll throw in LA/Hollywood as well.

True, per the analysis I've read.  One nuke, high enough above Kansas, would have line of sight to both coasts.  But only a few of our enemies have that capability.  I would expect some lower altitude bombs launched from freight ships near our coasts by a terrorist state to be more likely.

As far as natural occurances, someone implied it would be a world-wide event.  Not true, either.  Geo-Magnetic Storms occur near the poles.  Since the magnetic North pole is in/near Canada, North America will get a bigger dose than Europe.  Eqautor dwellers should be fine.  Electronics will be fine, too.  GMS's don't produce the fast, high-voltage wave of a nuke generated EMP, just the longer slow wave which fries the grid.  But without the grid, what use will our electronics be?

EMP is very real and current IC technology is highly susceptible without any shielding. My advice get a garbage can metal and put all your electronics in it. I have one with a ham radio, batteries, torches etc as well as a tablet and cell phone just in case something is up.

The only people who are protected against EMP are the department of defence who have hardened facilities underground in double door mesh cages and their own generators. Everything else is doomed. If you have an old crystal radio or vacuum tubes great but any CMOS tech including your car is toast. There were some old 4wD that were EMP proof but they are being confiscated by the various governments.

Hey, you just can't say "garbage can, metal," and leave it at that! Does "said can" get grounded while contents are insulated from its walls or does the can stand on non-conducting rubber feet and act like a giant capacitor? Inquiring minds want to know.

How come no one said anything about all planes falling out of the sky, except hardened fighters and bombers?

With every vehicle's fuel pump electro-fried, spare ignition kits for autos, etc will be worthless as will all diesel-run engines. With only three days of food in the supply chain pipeline, folks will get very hungry very fast. Got tuna?

I really wonder who came up with this grounding crap first.
A Faraday cage needs no grounding to function. (But the inside contents need to be kept insulated from the cage.)

Grounding is a concept to protect humans if they touch the outside of the Faraday cage when an event happens.

Pro Tip:
Did you know...
That if you fill your bathtub up with water and place all of your electronic devices in it, it renders them impervious to EMP?

It's true! And more fun than you'd think, provided that you unplugged them first. I didn't list that as a step for a reason. And a good one.

Once you've done it...
You'll also notice movement around you.
DO NOT be alarmed. Those are people. Interact with them. Some of them are fun and interesting.

Aside from anything else, an EMP would totally disrupt almost all auto/truck/etc. usage. Unless you have an ancient carborated car with points your ignition, timing, and fuel injection is doa after an EMP.

Yeah but -

President Barack Ebola is far more toxic and destructive than EMP would be, and it's happening NOW, not in some hypothetical future scenario.

Not that he's to blame for all the ills - he's the stage 3 phase of the disease, and Clintoon was stage 1, Bush Kiddie was stage 2.

So EMP would be like being told by your wife that she's been cheating on you, when you just previously found out from your doc that you have the syph (Clintoon), the plague (bush) and Ebola (this prez).

The media is full of the spread of and "accidental" release of horrendous diseases, most are probably designer. These specialists going around to help: I actually think they are collecting the shit and bringing it back to their labs, sloppily. Why? The rich are afraid of the poplulations they are extracting wealth from. There are generational plans to kill most of us. Read the Georgia Guidestones and reference the work of Bill Gates. Question why hormones are in most things as are heavy loads of antibiotics, and our resistent bugs get stronger. Be objective about flouride. Why is it there?

Now EMP: it is the coup de grace of choice. Sure its modelled, they know how it will kill. They've actually made our grid EASIER to take down over the last 20 years. The heartless wealth extraction, gasoline prices, rediculous UNaffordable healthcare act, a suicidal foreign policy. All this and more are designed to create the storyline, a convincing backstory. I don't think Putin will "do" his people. We've proven that we will "do" our people.

My only hope is enough of you will survive, if only long enough, to MAKE SURE none of the oligarchs and planners live to benefit from the imaginary world they think they are creating.
