American Ebola Patients On Way To Atlanta Hospital, Customs On Heightened Alert For "Ill" Passengers

Tyler Durden's picture

Two American healthcare workers, described as in 'grave condition and worsening' are being infected by the Ebola virus are on their way to Atlanta's Emory University Hospital for treatment. As WSBTV reports, the hospital has a separate isolation unit set up in partnership with the CDC to treat serious infectious diseases. CDC officials have called this "the biggest and most complex Ebola outbreak in history." Sentiment across social media appears rather biased towards the negative on bringing the patients back. As we warned last night, there are significant implications should Ebola come to America. WE also note that while the CDC is not screening airline passengers, customs and border agents are on heightened alert for 'people with flu-like symptoms."

As WBSTV reports,

The hospital has a special isolation unit set up in collaboration with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to treat patients with serious infectious diseases.

At least one of the two will be taken to a hospital at Emory University, near the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, according to CNN.

A spokeswoman told Channel 2 Action News she did not know when the patients would arrive, but confirmed the patients are from west Africa. The Associated Press reported the patient is an American aid worker.

"It is physically separate from other patient areas and has unique equipment and infrastructure that provide an extraordinarily high level of clinical isolation," a spokesman said in a release.

Sources told CNN the two Americans being evacuated are Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol. Both are described as being in grave condition but are stable after their health worsened overnight.  Both healthcare workers have been in Liberia with the faith-based charity Samaritan's Purse.

The hospital said doctors, nurses and staff are trained in procedures to handle this type of patient.

The hospital is only one of four such facilities in the country.

...

“This is the biggest and most complex Ebola outbreak in history. Far too many lives have been lost already,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “It will take many months, and it won’t be easy, but Ebola can be stopped. We know what needs to be done. CDC is surging our response, sending 50 additional disease control experts to the region in the next 30 days.”

Protection...

Airline officials were told to notify the CDC before ill passengers board a plane. The CDC will then investigate ill passengers and quarantine them if necessary.

Channel 2's Dave Huddleston spoke with officials at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport who said customs and border protection agents are on heightened alert to watch for people with flu like symptoms.

At this time, the CDC will not screen passengers traveling from the affected countries, but will provide guidance to airlines for managing ill passengers and crew for disinfecting the aircraft.

El Vaq, what you are describing is done all the time. It is called passive immunity. Have you heard of getting gamma globulin? Same principle. Someone else has produced the antibodies and they are used to help you. Note, this doesn't confer any permanent immunity to the recipient and I'm not sure how effective it would be in a patient with an advanced infection. I am guessing this will be used in these cases. I am not sure how long antibody is produced in a survivor. Some are long lasting, some wane over time. Something to investigate.

I don't know how long those antibodies are produced either, but they say that the virus can be spread via a man's semen for weeks after he has quit showing symptoms.

what I heard is that the two Americans they are bringing back here did get an infusion of blood from EBV patients who survived, so they are hoping their antibodies will help.  One of the donors who survived was a patient of the one doctor they are bringing back.

Appreciate hearing from a professional on this.  BS compassion is the real danger.  Sure, it's horrible they got sick but with Ebola is contain, contain, contain.   This country is mad and it's going to pay dearly, whether from this or some other mistake.

I'm sorry but, there is something really different about this ebola outbreak.

When doctors wearing bio suits that go through 3 decontaminations including spraying them off with bleach are getting infected with this then, this outbreak is different, in my humble opinion, at least.

Maybe the hidden rulers want a depopulation event rolling through the lower social classes that happen to live in Atlanta.

Of course bioweapons break out of the target population all the time.

The USA has plenty of tiny little islands we could put these two and a mobile ICU unit / standalone hospital for ebola infected Americans.

With CDC running things we should all be VERY concerned.

This is another corrupt and dangerous group of .gov flunkies. They would have us believe Lyme Disease is no big deal...and is easily treated with a tiny amount of doxycycline.

If the past is indicative of the future CDC will make things worse and lie about it.

That can always be taken as callous, but shitfuck, look at the world today?  Anyone with kids (myself) has that awful feeling in their gut as to what the world holds for them.

Yes, but the kids weren't alive yet for most of the 90's, so that concept is largely lost upon them. I think the challenge is trying to get the younger ones to look at what they value as "good" and work that into the reality they create for themselves in the future.

There are also several cholera outbreaks in West Africa right now just waiting to catch an all expense paid trip to the land of the free and the home of the slaves. And if the eastern front miraculously holds, there is drug resistant malaria on the western front (which does kill in large numbers)... for the pikers worried about chikungunya. Meanwhile, there is already TB and God knows what else breaching the southern lines. Perhaps some crazy Cannucks will invade from the north with brucellosis next week. I was one of the unlucky people to get 2009H1N1. I gave it to Mr who claimed it was the worst illness he had in his life. I had to agree. What I went through had everyone so terrified I handled the flu samples that year because I was immune. We both survived.

Comparing Ebola to H1N1 is like comparing a 155mm howitzer to a cap gun.

I have no idea what it was with H1N1 that made it as bad as it was.  I just remember reading about cytokine storms after reading some speculation from a guy who said that weed had the potential to stop a cytokine storm in its tracks.  That idea hasn't been tested and seems dubious to me, but if the system is overwhelmed with a strain of flu like the Spanish flu, I figure, WTF.  It's probably better to go out high and not giving a shit.

Either way, I'm going to agree with Miffed that the flu sucks.

The truth is what it is, if you think these people are a threat or there haven't been more serious outbreaks with deadlier pathogens that have been kept quiet, you haven't been paying attention for quite some time.

We are interested in doom scenarios here. Not from their desire, but from knowledge and front running so as not to get caught with the tide. My family was amazed at how much I already knew about what was going on. This whole thing has a different feel because it fits so many different needs for those who would like to think they are in control. "Order from Chaos" if you will. Fear, population control and just general control from killing liberty as this virus gets going globally there would be many calling for controls. I am watching this very closely and I am hoping I am wrong, but if this is proven to be airborne, I would make plans to "leave early, go far and stay long."

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 11:07 | 5032610 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

Except a global pandemic caused by a virus is a different ballgame.  Good luck getting people to act enforce the controls if that happens.

There is no point in doing anything but keeping an eye on things at this point.  Most of these things pass without incident, but eventually one will beat the odds and fuck us.  There's nothing we can do about that but not be surprised if/when we come face to face to the one that spreads and take measures to protect ourselves.  In the meantime, we still have to eat and breath to survive, and laughing every once in a while might be good for us.

One thing to keep in mind is that after the black death, the oligarchs in Europe lost a lot of power, even though they were the ones able to escape to the country and minimize their exposure.  When it had run its course, they found that labor was to be had at a premium, and those pesky surfs had a lot of leverage.  It was, in a sense, a great reset.  Europe got turned off, then back on again, and after being turned back on, it was truly different.

There in lies the arrogance of this if it is in fact set upon us on purpose by people like Soros and Gates. They think they are God. Personally, I think this is just nature being nature and controlling out population; a great culling. We shall see. It's all bluster and modeling currently. I hope it blows over.

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 12:02 | 5032981 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

The system cannot be broken to the point that something as deadly as the black death would break it and maintain the same structures for control that existed before.  The people who survive would be lucky, resourceful and used to the prospect of death.  Then there is the infrastructure that is needed to control people that wouldn't be getting maintained.

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 12:59 | 5033417 Old Man River
Old Man River's picture

Some folks may not be able to skedaddle. Or may not be so lucky. So I just want to throw some emphasis to “resourceful.” Be smart and ready. Folks needs to give their bodies (and the wife and young’uns) the best chance to repel the disease, even if infected. Reach for a handful of organic arugula instead of that Chicken McNuthin is what I mean. If your body don't have the right defensive ammo yous gonna get a misfire or worst. But that’s the deal with any disease that’s all around us every day whether it’s this Eboler or H2N5 or even cold sores. Just sayin.

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 13:07 | 5033458 El Vaquero

A lot of folks wouldn't be able to skedaddle.  We do have a lot more knowledge about how disease is spread than people did during the black death though.

"leave early, go far and stay long."

Great advice I have posted here on this subject myself....

It comes from the Ken Follett book Pillars of the Earth.    I highly recommend getting the audio and listening.  Great story.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Pillars-of-the-Earth/dp/B000X1MX7E

It highlights what  El Vaquero said down below is that After the Plague the Monarchs weren't who they were before it.  Labor came into it's own.   Didn't realize that historical fact before hearing the book.

Leave Early

Go Far

Stay Long...
