Tennessee Doctor In Self-Quarantine On Return From Liberia Ebola Hotspot
A Tennessee doctor, working at the same Liberian clinic as Dr. Kent Brantly - the Ebola-infected American who was flown to Atlanta yesterday for treatment - has placed himself in quarantine as a "precaution for [his] family." As ABC reports, Alan Jamison, a retired pediatrician, returned home to Morristown, Tenn., after he was evacuated from Liberia by the aid group he was volunteering for, says he's "feeling well" and showing no sign of symptoms; and claims since landing in the US, he said he's had no physical contact with anyone. As Mark St.Cyr notes, the Ebola virus which has been separated from the U.S. populace by the fortune of geological positioning has not only arrived on our doorstep, but was flown in deliberately on its own personal G5. Many are asking questions of; why? But perhaps the more crucial question is 'what if?' The what if question was this: "What if they need to bring them back because they had no choice? What if the reason they need to get them into better facilities is for the worst of all reasons? i.e., It’s already here."
A Tennessee doctor who placed himself in quarantine after volunteering in West Africa, where the Ebola virus is rampant, says he's "feeling well" and showing no sign of symptoms.
Alan Jamison, a retired pediatrician, returned home to Morristown, Tenn., after he was evacuated from Liberia by the aid group he was volunteering for -- working at the same hospital as Dr. Kent Brantly, an American now fighting the deadly virus.
"I feel very comfortable and I'm looking forward to being able to be with my family again," Jamison told ABC News via Skype.
Since landing in the U.S., he said he's had no physical contact with anyone and has only been near his daughter, who picked him up from the airport. Jamison said he plans to hole up at home until the 21-day incubation period is completed.
"I'm out of the major risk period right [now]," he said. "The isolation that I'm going through right now is in excess of what the CDC suggested for the precaution for my family."

Jamison isn't sure how Brantly, who is in isolation and expected to arrive in the U.S. next week, became infected with Ebola.
"He was very cognizant and careful with the hygiene precautions that he used," Jamison said. "I'm not sure how it occurred that he was exposed."

Often times we get caught up in the asking of why rather than asking what if. It sounds like such a subtle distinction and for some it’s an exercise not worth pursuing. However, it is sometimes this very innocuous line of questioning that is the only thing that gets at the root of many issues facing not only business in general, but sometimes rooting out the answers one doesn’t want to actually face – never mind deal with.
Personally I made many of my marks in business by being the person who more often than not had to pick up the pieces or control their trajectory as to where they may land ahead of time during my tenure in the business world. Today the professional moniker is “an expert in Crisis Management.”
Expert is not for vanity’s sake. If I had done it once that could be racked up to chance, twice could be coincidence, but three times and more and you’ve distinguished yourself with a track record.
Although I have always been somewhat of a contrarian, it was when a friend of mine years earlier asked me a rhetorical question during a crisis taking place where we lived that shaped much of my reasoning and understandings for years to come.
Earlier that day the city where we grew up experienced a power outage causing a city-wide black out that was still not resolved as we were talking later that afternoon.
The outage occurred during the mid morning. It wasn’t as if the streets or neighborhoods were cloaked in darkness. Yet, in less than 30 to 45 minutes after the outage started looters began smashing windows downtown and stealing everything that wasn’t nailed down.
It didn’t start with just one, it was a mob from all accounts that started the spree.
As we were discussing the reasons for “why” and more he made a statement that sticks with me to this day: “You keep asking why would they do this so quickly. The question you need to answer is, what if this is what they were waiting for?” That subtle change in questioning changes everything both in how you address the “why” and more.
Again it changes the thought process in how one looks as to deal with situations in their heads while opening up lines of questioning that help one zero in and fix a true underlying issue; rather than addressing or wasting time arguing moot points. i.e., If you only think about why someone is looting in general terms you rationalize the intent (boredom, mob behavior, frustration, etc.) far different from what if the intent was as soon as opportunity showed itself – that was what was to be done.
His reasoning was it happened far too quick. He said, “People just don’t lose the power and begin smashing windows 30 minutes later unless that’s exactly what you were waiting for.
Whether he was right or wrong didn’t matter. His line of thinking in objective analysis was spot on and I never forgot it. Plus it has served me well these decades later throughout my professional life.
So what does all this have to do about the issues today?
Well, it has a lot to do with what has just transpired in Atlanta in the willful experiment in both transporting as well as containing one of the world’s worst known viruses to the United States.
I use the words “experiment” as well as “willful” deliberately for this has never been done here before.
As of right now the Ebola virus which has been separated from the U.S. populace by the fortune of geological positioning has not only arrived on our doorstep, but was flown in deliberately on its own personal G5. Many are asking questions of; why?
I was speaking with a friend where I pondered a “what if” rhetorical rebuttal to their questioning of “why” and they nearly froze. As I said before: Changing why to what if many times opens up far more doors than one first believed even available.
The what if question was this: “What if they need to bring them back because they had no choice? What if the reason they need to get them into better facilities is for the worst of all reasons? i.e., It’s already here.”
Of course this is absolutely nothing more than a thought experiment. I’m not trying to be an alarmist banging pots and pans out in the streets with a sign around my neck claiming “The End Is Near!” Nor, do I have, know, or pretend to know what we should or should not be doing. I’m just asking a question because the answers are far too important and meaningful to not only business, but for much, much, more.
Here’s why one really needs to think (and that means clearly and rationally) for there are just too many other things happening that no one wants to even consider, let alone ponder “what ifs.”
Here’s what we know as of today. Not speculation, not hyperbole, not innuendo, but fact.
First: We know as of today we have an out of control southern border crisis where tens of thousands of both children and more are crossing in droves. Many have confirmed cases of infections diseases such as tuberculosis and others that have been all but eradicated in the U.S. currently.
What we also know is: we don’t know who or all the identities of those that crossed are. We know the bulk, but what about god forbid just one terrorist mixed within carrying the deadly Ebola virus. What if that were to be true?
Second: We know that there were infected people with this deadly virus detained and isolated after being seen visually suffering from the virus at: an airport. Albeit in the country of origin, but as I said earlier the question to ask is “what if” one made it past?
Third: This could have far more impact to western civilization and its society than any conventional means of warfare could ever have. And the people wanting to inflict harm are more than willing to use any and all means to bring about that end. No matter how hard one tries to equate or affix the immorality as to why one wouldn’t or shouldn’t.
I’ve talked, debated, and down right argued with people many times over the years where they begin to get up in arms as to defend positions through the “why” frame of reference. Well, “why would people to do this?” or “Why would one do that when …..?” (you can fill in the blank.)
What has over turned their soap box over whether it be about business, or just plain discussions on life more often than not is when I posit the “what if.” e.g., What if it doesn’t work? What if that doesn’t happen? What if there’s another reason? What if what you think to be true is in actuality wrong? This is when and where the questioning, reasoning, breakthroughs and more have happened. I believe you get what I’m trying to convey.
Don’t take any of this as a slam of the poor victims we just brought back. I have great compassion as well as admiration for these doctors and others that have the courage of their convictions to walk head first into a truly horrific condition as to try not only heal, but to help foster ways as to prevent.
These people are doing work where statutes should be erected at every public square in their honor. I understand and can easily rationalize all of the “whys” these people would embark on such truly humanitarian work.
What I currently fear is that once again I’m near alone where no one seems to even be thinking, let alone contemplating the obvious…

I may be guilty of anthropomorphizing here, but I suspect viruses have no emotional investment in where they are.
Actually, infectious agents do NOT want to kill their hosts...that would be suicidal. Agents that DO kill so well usually do not survive long themselves. That is one of the reasons Ebola has remained where it is for the most part...the ones infected are usually to damned sick to go very far.
And if you managed to transport one of them to say, the US, and it 'got out', it would do the same thing...kill many locally, and retreat to the bush when the host population died out. But it is simply too lethal in its current form to go very far.
And if it does manage to extend its domain, it will have to mutate into a much less lethal form if it is to survive. That is what most of our other diseases have done. So, in 20 years, maybe we'll have yearly outbreaks of some weaker sister of Ebola, much like influenza today. It will kill off the weak, and we'll vaccinate for whatever form we are expecting for that year.
But as long as it remains so deadly, it is an organism on the 'endangered species' list.
Seriously though folks, you can't make this shit up.

If anonymous people on the internets ever said they were wrong about the doom porn they helped launch several months prior, we would have had plenty of apologies from the people who doom-mongered SARS, H1N1, etc. Unfortunately, none of you will own up to it so I'll apologize on your behalf for your own lunacy.
This whole Ebola "scare" provides much more of a microcosm into how certain people WANT doom and destruction to happen than it illuminates the actual likelihood of such events occurring.
What never ceases to amaze me is how otherwise rational and intelligent human beings, cannot get their heads wrapped around these low probability events, that coincidentally have high or catastrophic consequences. I think it is the "it can't happen to me phenomena". These are the same people who are "victims" of violent crime, natural disasters, or civil wars because they never prepared for it. I mean, did you ever hear the Bosnians in the months leading up to their civil war? It was "civil war can't happen here, this is modern times, this is Europe! It cannot happen here!" And guess what, most the time these eternal hopers are right, but when they are wrong, they are literally the stupidest fucking people you can ever meet. These people live in a bubble and tragically they convince other people to fall for the same normalcy bias' when they could be making some sort of preparations, no matter how unlikely it is for an event to occur. It's like they find consolation and confidence by convincing others that nothing bad will happen! Even more interesting, is when he/she ends up being right (which stasticially they will be more right then wrong in terms of outcomes, but not necessarily in terms of consequence), it will further convince him/her that future improbable events, are even more unlikely to occur.
Politicians fucking with ebola as a political tool reminds me of the video where the african terrorists give the chimpanzee the cocked and locked loaded fully loaded full auto AR. Politicians will do whatever it takes to bring this to the world stage as a crisis "to be controlled". Not good

If you look at the WHO reports the number of cases/deaths has doubled every month for the last 4 months. It is going to become very obvious very soon whether they have a lid on this. Assuming this already exponential rate does not speed up when it lands in a 3rd world mega city (Lagos, Los Angeles, etc) we have about a year until it hits 1 million deaths at this rate.
Remember exponents? At the current rate, every month, the number of people dying is the same as all previous months combined.
If the death toll hits 25k by new years it is full steam ahead and i'd start making some serious preparations. If it hits 25k deaths before new years it is accelerating and I'd give myself 2-3 months of prepping to make sure i could ride out at least a couple years of minimal contact with society. I think close to 500k to a million deaths is around the point everyone starts freaking out and the risk becomes tangible to most everyone. A monthly doubling starting at 1 million gives you about a 10 months to 1 billion.
On the flip side, if we are appreciably below 25k deaths at new years there has been some success at containment, whether man-made or natural, and would give us a lot more time to prepare (if for god knows what reason you haven't already due to all the rest of the crap going on).

Somethings that should bother intelligent thinking people. There is a 3 week period before the virus is visible, did he return 21 days ago and has been isolated since then? He says he has been longer in isolation that the CDC recommends.... did he fly his own plane....... to a his own private airstrip. His daughter drove him home, Wonder if he hug his daughter or sneezed in her presence.
So lets say he took a normal flight landed and a normal airport did not inform Customs of his travel and went home to then self isolation. And he is an educated man......in medicine...... he should be put in prison for his lack of public concern. Suppose he was infected and his family found him, he will endanger his family and medical staff sent to help.

I showed my wife this story and she replied, "Sierra Leone folks are not stupid. They will travel sick to get to western medicine and escape African hospitals." She worked there for a month a few years back. She thinks we should be ok for the most part here in Merica, but these stories will increase. She thinks they were stupid to bring the Doctors home cuz you obviously have a new strain that is showing signs or being airborne. 100 infected medical workers in Africa should hammer that home. The difference is I'm healthy, young, and I live in the Western world, and when I get the flu (nearly every year), I have an infinitely small chance of dieing from it. But, if something changes that makes Ebola more mobile and infectious, the small chance I get Ebola may grow, but I will always have a high mortality risk if I catch it. So when I hear that the rate of infection of Ebola is rising exponentially, my concern is towards the thing that *may become* more risky to me. Rate of change my slow witted friend, rate of change.
This is *very* easy to fix: ban all travel and immigration to and fro the third world hell holes from which these viruses originate.
But, that would be RAAAAYCISS.

Seeing as free markets have never been tried in many areas dominated by the State, it is impossible prove the hypothesis that government coercion is necessary for public health or anything else.
Reasonable hypothesis exists on how free markets could handle issues such as communicable disease.

Years ago, non African citizens who picked up an Ebola strain resulted in the USA's CDC bending arms to try to get samples for study. These strains have mutated over decades and likely we may see an airborne strain in the near future.
Personally, I think the CDC got all excited at the prospect of having American patients to study and wanted to claim them without delay. Why? I suspect the CDC has information that the strain is drastically mutated...and might be nearer to the airborne strain than ever before.
There is some reason the CDC and the U.S. Gubbermint have arranged this and I think you'll be seeing more coming (Americans).

I think Bloomberg is a few years late on that. Ebola is already here, has been since it emerged in Reston, VA, many years ago. Albeit in a much less lethal form.

Airport staff tonight told of their fears of an Ebola outbreak after a passenger from Sierra Leone collapsed and died as she got off a plane at Gatwick.
Workers said they were terrified the virus could spread globally through the busy international hub from the West African country which is in the grip of the deadly epidemic.
The woman, said to be 72, became ill on the gangway after she left a Gambia Bird jet with 128 passengers on board. She died in hospital on Saturday.

So, ask yourself, how did over 100 health care workers get infected in the first place. It seems that aerosol filtering in biohazard suits is " optional ". There is little known about this virus compared to other viruses.
What happens to the health care workers who are in the US if they survive Ebola ? Does Dr. Brantley get released to go back to work here or spend time with his family ?

Neither I nor Jim Stone are physicians however the claim that Colloidal silver does not work against Viruses goes against a long history that suggests that it does. In fact the history of silver suggests that no pathogen can remain in tact in the vicinity of silver. Native American Indians knew this as well as many other culture. He suggests that vitamin C or ascorbic acid is the better route. Ascorbic acid is certainly worthwhile but to write off silver seems absurd. In response to the first half of your post...The only reason Ebola is so lethal is because we are immuno-naive to it. It is a recent infection to humans, and our systems haven't yet adjusted. This is the same phenomenon that caused the native Americans to die off so spectacularly from smallpox.
Same phenomenon that caused the earlier outbreaks of bubonic plague to wipe out half of Europe. Bubonic plague is endemic in the western US, has been for decades. Every year, people die of plague right here in the US. So why doesn't it hit us hard like it used to? Because we are now familiar with the little bugger, that's why. Now, it is only likely to kill you if you are already weakened, or receive no treatment at all.
An agent that kills the host so quickly is an agent that will NOT survive unless it makes some kind of "arrangement" with the host organism, and tones things down a bit.

The British government says the poor woman from Sierra Leone who was stricken while deplaning at the Gatwick airport did not have the Ebola virus. The government, oddly, did not say what she died of and produced no death certificate. I just do not trust the British government any more than our own. It does highlight the problem inherent in allowing someone possibly infected with the virus on an airplane. What happens to the other passengers if the person develops symptoms on the flight?
How do you know if someone is "possibly infected", if there are no visible symptoms? Do you know how many people board flights on any random day? How many of them would you ground?
The logistics are very daunting...
