The U.S. Has Repeatedly Lied About Satellite Photographs as a Justification for War

George Washington's picture

The U.S. government claims that satellite photographs prove Russian separatists are responsible for the shootdown of the Malaysian airplane over Ukraine, and that Russia has fired artillery into Ukraine.

Russia claims that the photos are fake.

While we don't have the necessary expertise to know who's right, it's worth noting that the U.S. government has repeatedly been caught lying about satellite photos as a basis for war.

For example, the U.S. lied about satellite photographs in the run up to the first Gulf War.  The Christian Science Monitor reported in 2002:

And the same thing happened in the first Gulf War.  The Christian Science Monitor reported in 2002:

When George H. W. Bush ordered American forces to the Persian Gulf to reverse Iraq's August 1990 invasion of Kuwait part of the administration case was that an Iraqi juggernaut was also threatening to roll into Saudi Arabia.

Citing top-secret satellite images, Pentagon officials estimated in midSeptember that up to 250,000 Iraqi troops and 1,500 tanks stood on the border, threatening the key US oil supplier.

But when the St. Petersburg Times in Florida acquired two commercial Soviet satellite images of the same area, taken at the same time, no Iraqi troops were visible near the Saudi border just empty desert.

"It was a pretty serious fib," says Jean Heller, the Times journalist who broke the story.

***

Shortly before US strikes began in the Gulf War, for example, the St. Petersburg Times asked two experts to examine the satellite images of the Kuwait and Saudi Arabia border area taken in mid-September 1990, a month and a half after the Iraqi invasion. The experts, including a former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst who specialized in desert warfare, pointed out the US build-up jet fighters standing wing-tip to wing-tip at Saudi bases but were surprised to see almost no sign of the Iraqis.

"That [Iraqi buildup] was the whole justification for Bush sending troops in there, and it just didn't exist," Ms. Heller says. Three times Heller contacted the office of Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney (now vice president) for evidence refuting the Times photos or analysis offering to hold the story if proven wrong.

The official response: "Trust us." To this day, the Pentagon's photographs of the Iraqi troop buildup remain classified.

***

"This administration is capable of any lie ... in order to advance its war goal in Iraq," says a US government source in Washington with some two decades of experience in intelligence, who would not be further identified.

(And see this report from the Guardian.)

And - in the run up to the Iraq war - the U.S. claimed that satellite images showed that Saddam possessed bunkers and trucks loaded with chemical weapons.  This was later debunked, and no chemical weapons were found.

Indeed, U.S. intelligence agencies have REPEATEDLY lied as a way to justify war, and on other issues of vital national concern.

The Kiev control tower recordings, evidence that would answer a lot of questions, like who directed flight MH17 to break precedent and fly over the Eastern Ukraine war zone?

Well that is the real smoking gun isn't it. Why hide this recording when it 'should' back up claims the plane was flying along normally and got shot up by a ground missile.  So WHY hide such a tape.....only one reasons...it Doesn't back up the official story.

Probably control tower going to MH17....left, left, down a bit, a bit more, a bit more left, down a bit....Got it, now stay there.

MH17: ahhhh some fucking jet fighter fired a missile on us.....chaning heading to nearest landing site.

Control Tower: Hold your course, hold your course.....jesus stay there ... Hey General they are still flying.

Ukraine General to BUK....take them out. ASAP

MH17: Control tower, control tower where the fuck are you......control tow.....................................................

General to Govt Minister....Its done.

Minister immediately ....states MH17 shot down by a missle ....

WTF....how did he know straight up that a plane that dissappeared was shot down by a ground missile???

Woops........ criminals always incriminate themselve as they have informtion that no others have...and let it slip.

I care far more about what governments do than what they say. In fact, I find that it's a strange lazyness by the - mostly Anglophone - media to huff and puff about which politician lied where and when. A way to anger the "Little People"... because it sells

give me anytime a proven liar that does the honest, sensible thing to a "honest" pol that plays the media game to perfection yet causes destruction

perhaps I'm just reaffirming that I'm a Continental European, here. We have our own brand of skepsis, and our own history of propaganda wars

as long as people are willing to go to war - given the right provocation - people will go to war. yet there will always be provocations, fake, constructed or genuine ones

the trick would be to concentrate more on why a war should be. and this would have to start with "know your enemy", which at a popular level is anyway a very hazy thing. Just note how Islam has become a dirty word wherever Rupert Murdoch has a broadcasting outfit

The West has been attempting to provoke the Russians into a war for the past twenty years. Putin despite his macho brand of hubris... and I am by no means a fan... has shown remarkable restraint.

Meanwhile the current administration is involved in an ongoing rift of military personal (while militarizing it's own internal police force). What the heck is that all about?

At the same time our Southern border has all but disappeared.

China has begun a major move in the Pacific (most especially in the South China Sea).

And the Middle East has been forced on a rapid descent into chaos (as though it really needed a push).

At this point, who cares if they are lying about satellite pictures?

The sheeple crave a leader so desperately, that they'll believe known lies and hope for the best. It's not enough to point out the lies, because the sheeple have made an emotional choice to follow, irregardless.
To get through their emotional defenses you have use a stronger emotion, such as fear. Believing the neo-cons, Obama and the lying media/government industrial complex has dire results. Those results are what must be pictured and frequently repeated to Pavlovian train the sheeple to see the consequences of the believing.
You and/or thousands or millions will die for the glory of Obama and the neo-cons. Turn the tables, let them fear the consequences of believing, regardless of whether it's the truth or a lie.

Truth, justice, and the American way was always a lie. Americans tortured and killed far more prisoners in WW2 than we have in the war on terror. Try reading the first hand accounts of guys who fought in the Pacific. We have alsways had our moral failings, even - and especially- when we seemed so clean on the surface. The only difference is that now the truth gets out and we find it shocking.

Woudl I trust the US government in absolute terms? Of course not. Would I trust it relative to Russia?  Every time. We've got a lot of creeps in power. But unlike most of the world, we have a relatively effective press and a independent judiciary. Mostly.

Firstly to cast aspersions and questiont any soldier's morality in the Pacific during WWII is categorically unfair.  I assume you have read the entire history of the actors in the war in the Pacific.  Don't try and revise that history and judge actions that you can't identify with.  Unfair to anyone serving in the Pacific theater.

Comparing WWII to War on Terror is the epitome of comparing apples to oranges.  A different ballgame all together.  Anyone revisiting that era and trying to attach morality, today's version or otherwise, to the actions of the troops actually living through it is at the very least unfair and somewhat arrogant.  Not saying thats what you are doing, just making that point clear for anyone attempting to judge harshly those people during that time and under those circumstances.   Unless you lived it, you can't know it and certainly can't say with any certainty what you would or would not do under the same circumstances.  Make no mistake, there is nothing clean about war, never has been and never will be. War is war, politics are politics and it best not to mix the two as it leads to a recipe for disaster.

The Bataan Death March was no leisurely stroll through the park.  The Japanese were not exactly an opponent that showed a lot of mercy.  I wouldn't even attempt to go there with judgements on American troops during that period.

Otherwise I understand your point and would've and did agree with that sentiment whole heartedly 30 years ago.  With the revelations of the last decade or so I'm a lot more careful in what I believe about the behavior of any country including my own.  The US has lost the privilege of expecting blind patriotism from its citizens for too many reasons to list here.

Just as with people, trust is earned.  Once you engage in a littany of lies and misdeeds you cannot then complain about not being trusted which is sort of what the President has done recently.  Calling ones sense of patriotic duty to believe in the basic good of government and not question methods or motives.  Not even remotely the American Way and a largess  asked of the citizen that has no longer been earned by government.

I think everyone should be well past the point of being surprised, shocked or offended by the notion that governments and their institutions lie, cheat and steal.   There is no honor among thieves and we long ago determined that politicians are pathological liars.  It only makes sense that the institutions that are made up of pathological liars will engage in lying on a daily basis and be as predictable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.

The most disturbing and dangerous development for a "free" society is the corruption and cowardice of the so called "free" press.  The press was the one institution citizens relied on to hold government's somewhat accountable for their misdeeds.  Since media outlets have eschewed honest, objective and investigative journalism, chosen political sides along with returning to the worst sort of yellow dog journalism, society has lost its best and most useful weapon that kept governments somewhat in check.   We know the "checks and balance" that originally existed between the 3 branches of US government has long ago evaporated.  The biggest concern of the founding fathers was an executive office that had too much power, like a King for example and men like George Washington respected and protected against such a thing.  Now as each president takes office, their predecessor's actions allow them to gain more power rendering Congress and the Supreme Court mere puppets and in reality, ALLIES of the president regardless of PR or political party.

An objective and courageous press was he citizens best and last hope of keeping a massive and corrupt government somewhat in check.  Those days are long gone.  The NY Times, once considered the "paper of record" and publisher of the Pentagon Papers sold their souls long ago. The Washington Post, once the proud investigative force behind Watergate is but a faint memory.   Ironically the biggest, most important story was one no American newspaper wanted to break, the Snowden story.  Never thought I'd see the day when media outlets ran from ground breaking and historic news.  Once BP was criminalized in the media for the gulf oil spill no follow up stories exist showing the tragic results of the spill and use of chemical dispersants.  Compare that to the Exxon Valdez coverage.  Fukishima, compare coverage to that of 3 Mile Island.

Today's "journalist"  are  more concerned about access and press junkets.  The rare journalist, one who might ferret out some scandal no longer has the courage to risk all for the truth, either because they fear reprisal from the government or lack support from their editors.  Either way a complicit media, the most dangerous tool used to further corrupt governments and their lies was the final nail in the coffin of the Great American Experiment.   "The pen is mightier than the sword".  Truer words were never written.  Too bad the pen is now but an impotent quill with an ink well that has run dry long ago.

"obama" is nominally president, but the real powers are murkier and more powerful than the cocaine user with 3 dead boyfriends who is married to a transexual whom i call manchelle.

the rothschild satanists, nazi rockefellers, and bush crime syndicate want war, and war is what they will get. and the americans deserve it because they voted for the manchurian candidate who was supported by mossad via its puppet the cia.

frank newman, a deep mossad operative, along with rahm emmanuel, was the "obama" puppet master until he died.

so of course the government lies, and lies fervently about war just as it has done since its plutocrat scum sunk the uss maine.

Your heros in Washington have yet to release anything except photoshopped google earth imagery showing photoshopped missle trajectories.

The Kiev control tower recordings, evidence that would answer a lot of questions, like who directed flight MH17 to break precedent and fly over the Eastern Ukraine war zone? Was seized by the US/ Mossad controlled Junta Security forces right after the shoot down have never seen the light of day. Why? In the MH370 tragedy, the Kuala Lumpur control tower released their recordings immeadiately, because unlike your friends in Kiev, they had nothing to hide.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." -J. Goebbels

Which will be the first to break:

The one question I have about Vladomir Putin and the Mother Russia facing down the Global Bankster's Mafia is - Why not spill the beans on 9/11, Oklahoma City, Bond Fraud, German and other Gold Fraud, IMF Fraud, MH370, etc.?

Make the case. I dunno. Maybe they are rightly afraid of what the Mad Fiends will do? On the other hand, they could rally international support and make Horse Face and friends shut up about their "Global Community". When governments spy on their people and government propaganda programs intersect it is very dangerous and the potential of abuse is huge. This leads down a road towards less freedom and is paved with the bones of all those who have failed to be outraged by governments slowly removing their liberties.

We are all open to both blackmail or abuse by those in power for what they claim is a greater good as they determine just what that might be. Never overestimate the sophistication and ability of our government to clarify exactly what is happening anywhere and at any time. The recent score of scandals plaguing Washington makes it clear that more fact-free confusion and speculation the fuel of propaganda-based reporting system is in no shortage.
