Some have claimed up to 42,000 troops are positioned on Ukraine's borders:

Glad you mentioned Mexican trains.

Just 100 years and 100 days ago the United States blockaded a Mexican port and thus began the American invasion/intervention in the 4 year-old Mexican (Ukrainian) Civil War (Revolution).  Kaiser Wilhelm (Ceasar/Czar) of the German Empire (US Empire) had been supporting the Porfirio Diaz (Elitist/Dictator/Fascist) faction with arms and supplies in the hopes of diverting America's (Russia's) attention to threats of war in Europe.  Wilson (Putin) was concerned for U.S. (Russian) commercial interests and eventually sent in American (Russian) troops.  There was never any Declaration of War.

Funny how history rhymes.

Now the shoe is on the other foot.   Viva Mexico and Pancho Villa and his Mexican trains carrying horse mounted troops.  Long live the Donbass and Russian intervention on its border!

Neither Obama nor Putin run their side of the show.  However, the quality of those advising their respective leaders is starting to come through loud and clear.

There is no better illustration about the quality of an Ivy League education than realizing that George W. Bush went to both Yale and Harvard.  So, if that "cream of the crop" can be President, it goes a long way an explaining the ineptitude in rest of the "deep state."  And this "deep state" runs the show, whether or not it's an R or a D in the Oval Office or even whatever the makeup of Congress actually is.

Looks like Russia doesn't suffer from this problem.  Appears that their leadership acquires their positions by merit, not because they share the same alma mater.

Screw up in Russia (as well as in much of the world) and there are (deadly) consequences.   You have a very Darwinian 'winnowing' process where the inept/incompetent are eliminated early on.

Contrast this process to the US where the inept but well funded seem to actualy rise to the top.   Accomplishemnts and ability matter for little compared to connections and family.  George W. Bush would have faded into oblivion with his first bankruptcy but family and friends bailed him out.  His political career was based solely on his name - he had no accomplishments of note in his record.   Even H.W. would've found his future cut short what with his involvement in some very questionable endeavors.

The US has become an inbred oligarchy - and we all know how THOSE end up.....  look at who's being mentioned for 2016 - another Clinton, another Bush.....WTF?     but I suppose that one can argue that our 'leaders' are mere figureheads with those pulling the strings remain in the dark.

Nonetheless, it's clear that whoever's actually running things is a parasite killing the host.  There's no way on earth that this can end well for anyone.

The situation with yeltsin in charge was awful, assets were being sold off to criminals at rock bottom prices, threats were made against other bidders so a bunch of very nice oligarchs got control of assets worth many billions - similar to the situation in ukraine. These oligarchs were only interested in stealing as much as possible regardless of consequences and were trying to get into politics to have even more control. This was pretty much taken to extremes in ukraine the most corrupt country in europe where people fought to have one leader replaced then a few years later voted for a complete 180. During the last 15 years putin has cleaned up the situation and things have been improving for the people - note i'm not saying he is any sort of saint. Also during the last 15 years who has invaded the most countries or tried to overthrow their governments? Hint the same country that has been doing it for the last 100 years.

Read Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq by Stephen Kinzer, of course it needs updating.

In a meritocracy, ethnocentric groups are llikely to achieve dominance, because as soon as a few of their members get into positions of power, they chose other members of the 'tribe' rather than the best person, who then do the same, and who then do the same...

Quality of leadership will go down for the same reason; ethnicity trumps talent.

If I were Putin, I'd put the troops on the border and then not do shit unless they were directly attacked.  I'd then wait until September or October, then announce that natural gas is going up in price to make up for the sanctions.  I'd also start settling oil and gas deals in something other than the dollar, quite possibly at a discount from dollar prices and then make it clear that the discount is because the sanctions aren't having an effect on non-dollar trade.  Making bypassing the dollar an appealing idea to trade partners, but making it voluntary could be a major blow to the US.

all good ideas but nothins is going to happen because Germany (and then Europe) economies would die, he cannot have a dead europe, just waiting for the inevitable divorce beetween europe and US, hint: Merkel is in the way, she either moves Germany's ties east or is replaced by someone who will.

all coming this fall.

That's why I would make settling trade in non-dollars voluntary.  It would be giving Europe a choice - the US, or Russia.  It would also be making the choice easy if the non-dollar price is not raised vs raising the dollar price.  If Europeans don't trust the Ruble, then do it in something else.  Euros or Yuan or even PMs.  Whatever works, just so long as it isn't the dollar.  It is in Russia's best interests to end the stranglehold of the US via the dollar, and since Russia has the oil and gas, it has the leverage to do so.  It can even play the victim while not "forcing" the choice on Europe (yes, it will be a forced choice, but not in a "here's how it's going to be" way,) while watching the US have a shit fit.

But Ukraine has hundreds of CIA agents and FBI agents and mercenaries from Blackwater.  And Nuland to bake cookies.  And McCain, the songbird of the Hanoi Hilton,  to give back them up.

Huge Population of CIA Agents in Ukraine Says German Expert

There is a huge population of CIA agents right now busy in Ukraine and the problem is again that in all these things that happened Washington is accusing Russia of having agents in Ukraine while it is the other way around

Since the beginning of the week, the three most influential mass circulation newsmagazines of the United States, Britain, and Germany—Time, The Economist, and Der Spiegel—have published cover stories that combine wild accusations against Vladimir Putin with demands for a showdown with Russia.

The most striking and obvious characteristic of these cover stories is that they are virtually identical. The CIA has scripted them all. The stories employ the same insults and the same fabrications. They denounce Putin’s “web of lies.” The Russian president is portrayed as a “depraved” mass murderer.

Liars are funny like that.

They hear the accusations (rightly) levelled at them, and decide: "Hey, what if, instead of sitting here being accused, I went out and started accusing people of what they accuse me!"

So you are a thief: "Everyone's trying to take all my stuff all the time.  I was just taking it back."

You are a murderer: "He tried to kill me!"

And so on.  Basically, when dealing with liars, just listen to what they say, process the opposite, and then decide which is more likely.

One has to wonder how "united" western Ukraine really is.  Presumably Svoboda understands who backed the coup, who the dual citizen oligarchs are.  But there are not, all in all, that many of them.  Kiev may just engage in a good old fashioned Bolshevik-like "purge".   Maybe they have been... "Unfortunately, Ukraine is on the very verge of a large-scale aggression from our northern neighbour. There are indeed Russian troops at the borders of Ukraine, the most powerful group being in annexed Crimea - 22,000 soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces. On our borders, from Chernihiv to Novoazovsk there are Russian units in four directions"
-Mykhailo Koval, ICTV, 4 Aug 2014

I am reminded once again, how badly the Ukrainians suck at propaganda; they always screw it up.

Fully 67% of the "Russian forces massed on Ukraine's border" are in Crimea. They would be there legally and well under the number authorized by treaty even if Crimea was still part of Ukraine!

Hyperbole much?

Just to give some perspective-

From 1972 to 1996, the US had the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and all its heavy Armor squadrons just minutes away from Mexico (Fort Bliss). The 3rd ACR had a mongasso-massive shit-load more than a mere 160 tanks, not to mention beaucoup MLRSs, self propelled artillery, an attack air squadron, and many more things.

This was at a time when there was no reason to have such a massive force on the border. Mexico was not shelling the US across the border and calling for the death of (US) Americans.

Yet, nobody was hyperventilating about a massed force on the border.

The other 33% of these "Russian Forces" are dispersed across a 1,226 mile long border and inside the sovereign nation of Russia.

Vladimir Putin can keep his shirt off and enjoy the rays for awhile longer before he has to put it back on and go to work, regardless of whether an insignificant idiot like yourself thinks he is a poser or not.

Make no mistake about it, absolutely no European country gives a shit about Ukraine. Neither does the US, beyond its shortsighted, self interested schemes.

Waiting could actually be a very smart move if you are facing something that is unsustainable, and will run its course in a very short time period. Waiting requires discipline, and that rare ability to keep your eye on the strategic goal and look beyond your immediate concerns and even tactics.

You see, in a few short months, the Devil will come calling to collect the rent.

When the IMF restrictions and impositions kick in, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When Ukraine finds many of its exports cut off from the Russian market and no takers in Europe, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When Russia cuts off all defense industry production in Ukraine and sets up the plants in Russia proper, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When the Hryvnia takes a beating and becomes close to worthless, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When Monsanto bribes the Verkhovna Rada and they modify the current laws to allow patented GMOs, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When ownership of anything productive or of value is transferred to foreign carpetbaggers and big capital, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When NATO starts setting up camp and makes their government a client for western weaponry at great cost, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When outside powers gain control of Ukraine's "government" and start making decisions for them, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When big Agro corporations move in and the the Latifundiums are established, many will be reduced to medieval serfs, and yes, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

The "liberalization" and unleashing of "free markets" on Ukraine will be shock therapy; the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

When the winter comes and there is no gas, or money to you know, actually pay for it, the Ukrainian people will not be happy.

I could go on with specifics, but I think this is enough to get the point across.

This is the "IMF Special" and it is not an original story. As a matter of fact, it has played out in many places, many times before.

If the Ukranians identify the true culprits and are not deceived into thinking it was Russia's doing, things will get very interesting...

I'd be surprised if Russia attacks since the militia is winning, and the Kiev armed forces are disintegrating.  Why give Kiev the excuse of blaming the Russians for their defeat? But if Russia does attack maybe it has something to do with this:

Kiev concentrated powerful military grouping under Donetsk

Kiev concentrated powerful military grouping under Donetsk. This is the official Twitter page of the Donetsk national Republic.

As informs DND, "the Ukrainian army pulled to the Donetsk hundreds of armored vehicles and artillery, tens of MLRS (Hurricane, Tornado, Hail), missile complex Tochka-U"", writes "Rossiyskaya Gazeta".

edit: another thing, it's Kiev claiming Russian troops are massing at the border.  They have not been a reliable source in the past.

I do question as to whether Russia, NATO and for that matter the USA are really separate entities - from an elites perspective they all have a load of ants to rally and control.  On all sides there is a lot to loose if they loose control through say unmanaged financial crisis that frankly involves all of them.  An example that stands out is the preceived face of Israel in the news bombing Palestinian woman and children and like the rest of the West, all Russia has done is present a few stores.  Not one nation in the developed world comes out standing alone to say, stop or we will stop you  -  accept Iran who they all despise and would not after payment get their S300.  They're all in it together on some slightly agreed method forward and what happens between those points on a graph, just happen, family feuding no more.

The map of Ukraine looks just like one of those German attacks in WWII where the Germans push forward only to expose themselves on the front and both flanks to the Russians. While tanks are more capable today, 160 tanks is a drop in the bucket - there were 6000 tanks at the battle of Kursk in WWII. That battle was fought over a large area covering -- Eastern Ukraine -- and the Russian victory pretty much sealed the fate of Germany. I doubt Obama knows this, but you can bet that Merkel does.
