New York City Hospital Quarantines Man With Ebola-Like Symptoms Who Walked Into ER

UPDATE (via Mt.Sinai Press Conference):

* * *

As CBS reports,

A patient at Mount Sinai hospital is being tested after traveling to a country where the Ebola virus is present, the hospital said in a statement.

The man arrived at Mount Sinai’s emergency room early Monday morning with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.

The man told doctors he had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola is present, the hospital said.

The man has been placed in “strict isolation” and is undergoing various tests to determine the cause of the symptoms, the hospital said.

All appropriate steps to keep patients, staff and visitors safe are being taken, the hospital said.

Let's hope we do not start adding to this...

*  *  *

NY Times adds,

A hospital spokeswoman, Dorie Klissas, said that to protect the patient’s privacy the hospital was not making public his occupation, which country he had been in, whether he had been exposed to a patient with Ebola there, or whether he had close contacts like family members, friends or co-workers who were also at risk. Ms. Klissas said the patient’s blood was being tested for Ebola, but she declined to say when the test results would be available.

...

Ian Michaels, a spokesman for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, said that another patient was isolated at a hospital in the city last week after arriving on a flight from West Africa and showing symptoms found in Ebola patients.

That man was screened at Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday night and taken to Bellevue Hospital. He had a fever, but within a day the fever had gone away and it became clear that he did not have Ebola. Mr. Michaels did not know the details of the tests performed on the man.

“We are on a heightened state of alert,” he said. “We have instructed all 11 of our hospitals to follow C.D.C. guidelines and be on the lookout for Ebola-like symptoms.”

As we noted previously, this is what to expect if Ebola comes to America

RE: Patient with Febrile Illness and Recent Travel to West Africa

A patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, after recent travel to a West African country where Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been reported, presented to the Emergency Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital last night. The patient has been placed in strict isolation, and is currently undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of the symptoms. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff.

The Incident Command Centers of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai Health System have been activated and are working together in a unified fashion. The Mount Sinai Health System has been activated to a (HICS) Level 1 Alert. The Mount Sinai Hospital has been activated to (HICS) Level 2.

The Department of Emergency Management and the Division of Infectious Diseases at The Mount Sinai Hospital are employing all necessary infection control measures to protect patients and staff and to continue to provide the best care to our patients.  It is important to note that EVD can only be transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. The infection cannot be transmitted through casual contact.

General Information Regarding EVD:

  • As of August 1, 2014, approximately 1,300 cases (suspected and confirmed) had been reported in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
  • EVD is a severe, often fatal disease (case fatality is 55 to 60%).
  • Along with direct contact with bodily fluids, including infected blood, urine, sweat, semen and breast milk, exposure to objects (e.g., needles, sharps) contaminated with infected bodily fluids can spread the infection.
  • Patients with EVD are potentially infectious from onset of fever until weeks or months after recovery.
  • Ebola symptoms can appear from 2 to 21 days after exposure to the virus, with 8 to 10 days being the most common. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain (myalgias/arthralgias), weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
  • Hemorrhagic symptoms include broken blood vessels in the eyes (conjunctival hemorrhage), easy bruising, and GI bleeding.

Reporting:

Contact the Infectious Disease Attending on call or Infection Control for further guidance.
Immediately report all suspected cases of EVD to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) at 866-692-3641866-692-3641 .

For additional, accurate information, please visit the CDC’s webpage: http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola.

We will continue to keep you updated.

The order to quarantine at your residence won't happen until after you've left for the cottage, endured 14 weeks of everyone driving everyone insane up there, plus 3 days of being happily back in the city.

Watch your toilet paper level - if you get down to half a roll it's a good indicator that city officials are about to declare a quarantine emergency. No one never has enough tp in the house when emergencies are around the corner.

Oh, and wear your good underwear. If you are going to bite it, it'll be in your holey, threadbare pair.

Is it just me or do the ratio between cases and death seem very wrong? Ebola has a 90% death rate with no cure?

Mon, 08/04/2014 - 16:18 | 5045499 cougar_w
cougar_w's picture

There are probably two strains working. One has a very high fatality rate which serves to keep infectious spread to a minimum because people die so quickly. Another stain is not quite as lethal, and combined with perhaps a better infectious rate is able to spread further and faster before it can be contained, but with slightly fewer fatalities.

The inverse relationship between lethality and rate of spread is expected, as would be expected a general evolution of the pathogen toward the latter strain, this move being adaptive.

just posted this article on the last thread about the Canadian study on airborne transfer between species. Interesting because its from before the current outbreak. Biggest take away section:

Dr Kobinger stresses that the transmission in the air is not similar to influenza or other infections. He points to the experience of most human outbreaks in Africa.

"The reality is that they are contained and they remain local, if it was really an airborne virus like influenza is it would spread all over the place, and that's not happening."

Not happening...until now.

Scientists researching the lethal ebola virus have told the BBC that a commercial vaccine to prevent the onset of infection may never be developed.

Two companies with leading vaccine candidates have had their funding from the Pentagon suspended in recent weeks.

An expert said it was now "unlikely" a prophylactic vaccine would ever be used to prevent outbreaks of the disease.

Interesting stuff. The doctor, Larry Zeitlin, who is the president of Mapp Biopharmaceutical, started studying Filoviruses after receiving a grant from DARPA in 2002. He is also working with the team from Tulane University and USAMRIID working in the sierra leone area. I can provide links if interested.

PDF of USAMRIID press release

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCQQ...

Edit: after some reading, my conspiracy theory for this event unfolds like this: Dr. Larry Zeitlin, president of Mapp Biopharmaceutical which is the company behind the experimental serum given to the US patients, is given a grant by DARPA in 2002 to study ebola and ways to treat it after infection. In 2006, associates of Tulane University and USAMRIID start work on hemmorrhagic fever diagnostic test kits in the same hospital(Kenema) that is the epicenter of outbreak is Sierra Leone. They also assisted in monoclonal antibodies research with Dr. Larry Zeitlin, though, they claim, not on site in Africa. I believe Zeitlin was funded to find treatment for Ebola after infection to ensure the survival of TPTB while USAMRIID and Tulane members were testing for a disease they had, in fact, released among the population. The above PDF states in clear english that USAMRIID had found a cocktail of monoclonals that was 100% effective 1 hour after infection and 66% effective 48 hours after infection in Rhesus monkeys. We all asked what the justification was to bring the two infected US doctors to atlanta? Simple, they neededhuman guinea pigs in 100% controlled environment to ensure the elites treatment would work. Now they know it will, get ready for this thing to go global. I think this tinfoil aht is on a little tight tonight.

National Security Memo 200, dated April 24, 1974, and titled "Implications of world wide population growth for U.S. security & overseas interests," says:

"Dr. Henry Kissinger proposed in his memorandum to the NSC that "depopulation should be the highest priority of U.S. foreign policy towards the Third World." He quoted reasons of national security, and because `(t)he U.S. economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less-developed countries ... Wherever a lessening of population can increase the prospects for such stability, population policy becomes relevant to resources, supplies and to the economic interests of U.S.

Depopulation policy became the top priority under the NSC agenda, Club of Rome and U.S. policymakers like Gen. Alexander Haig, Cyrus Vance, Ed Muskie and Kissinger. According to an NSC spokesman at the time, the United States shared the view of former World Bank President Robert McNamara that the "population crisis" is a greater threat to U.S. national security interests than nuclear annihilation. In 1975, Henry Kissinger established a policy-planning group in the U.S. State Department's Office of Population Affairs. The depopulation "GLOBAL 2000" document for President Jimmy Carter was prepared.

It is no surprise that this policy was established under President Carter with help from Kissinger and Brzezinski - all with ties to David Rockefeller. The Bush family, the Harriman family - the Wall Street business partners of Bush in financing Hitler - and the Rockefeller family are the elite of the American eugenics movement. Even Prince Philip of Britain, a member of the Bilderberg Group, is in favor of depopulation:"

But if this is a genuine national defense issue albiet health related, what it tells us is that DHS, TSA, FBI, CIA, the Fusion centers, are all a complete waste of taxpayer money. All the databases, all the warrantless scanning of our emails, social media, phone calls, all the crotch-grabbing, cameras, microphones, GPS tracking, naked scanners, were totally and completely useless.

From top to bottom, the entire security industrial complex laid a big fat egg on this one. They failed, simply and utterly. And therefore, there is no more justification for the people of the United States to put up with this erosion of our Constitutional rights. Simply on the basis of total incompetence, justifies the firing of the Federal government.

losing NYC isn't the problem, consider how many major airports and transport hubs there are in the area. hubs that take people all across the US and the world, it's just a constant movement of mass amounts of people in close quarters to and from Manhatten 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

if it gets loose in NYC then any hope of containment is gone...

Virus's mutate.  At the begining stages of a pandemic the Death rate is often very high.

As the virus mutates the death rate will drop and the transmitability of the virus goes up.

If it does not follow that pattern, then the virus will burn out, essentially killing so many hosts it has nowhere to go.

It may not follow that usual pattern, it could be a Bankster type virus that will just go ape shit on the world.

High profile incidents covered by the media often reassures the public that the government stands ready to rush to our aid in case of a national disaster. Following a tornado or hurricane in the newscast we see FEMA workers spread-out and moving from door to door offering help to Americans in need.

Be prepared that in the case of a major crisis or disaster if you find yourself in an large area of devastation the government will prove largely ineffective. If and when a really large Armageddon event does occur we will quickly become acutely aware that God helps those who help themselves. More on this subject in the article below.
