New York City Hospital Quarantines Man With Ebola-Like Symptoms Who Walked Into ER

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE (via Mt.Sinai Press Conference):

* * *

As CBS reports,

A patient at Mount Sinai hospital is being tested after traveling to a country where the Ebola virus is present, the hospital said in a statement.

The man arrived at Mount Sinai’s emergency room early Monday morning with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.

The man told doctors he had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola is present, the hospital said.

The man has been placed in “strict isolation” and is undergoing various tests to determine the cause of the symptoms, the hospital said.

All appropriate steps to keep patients, staff and visitors safe are being taken, the hospital said.

Let's hope we do not start adding to this...

*  *  *

NY Times adds,

A hospital spokeswoman, Dorie Klissas, said that to protect the patient’s privacy the hospital was not making public his occupation, which country he had been in, whether he had been exposed to a patient with Ebola there, or whether he had close contacts like family members, friends or co-workers who were also at risk. Ms. Klissas said the patient’s blood was being tested for Ebola, but she declined to say when the test results would be available.

...

Ian Michaels, a spokesman for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, said that another patient was isolated at a hospital in the city last week after arriving on a flight from West Africa and showing symptoms found in Ebola patients.

That man was screened at Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday night and taken to Bellevue Hospital. He had a fever, but within a day the fever had gone away and it became clear that he did not have Ebola. Mr. Michaels did not know the details of the tests performed on the man.

“We are on a heightened state of alert,” he said. “We have instructed all 11 of our hospitals to follow C.D.C. guidelines and be on the lookout for Ebola-like symptoms.”

As we noted previously, this is what to expect if Ebola comes to America

RE: Patient with Febrile Illness and Recent Travel to West Africa

A patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, after recent travel to a West African country where Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been reported, presented to the Emergency Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital last night. The patient has been placed in strict isolation, and is currently undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of the symptoms. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff.

The Incident Command Centers of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai Health System have been activated and are working together in a unified fashion. The Mount Sinai Health System has been activated to a (HICS) Level 1 Alert. The Mount Sinai Hospital has been activated to (HICS) Level 2.

The Department of Emergency Management and the Division of Infectious Diseases at The Mount Sinai Hospital are employing all necessary infection control measures to protect patients and staff and to continue to provide the best care to our patients.  It is important to note that EVD can only be transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. The infection cannot be transmitted through casual contact.

General Information Regarding EVD:

  • As of August 1, 2014, approximately 1,300 cases (suspected and confirmed) had been reported in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
  • EVD is a severe, often fatal disease (case fatality is 55 to 60%).
  • Along with direct contact with bodily fluids, including infected blood, urine, sweat, semen and breast milk, exposure to objects (e.g., needles, sharps) contaminated with infected bodily fluids can spread the infection.
  • Patients with EVD are potentially infectious from onset of fever until weeks or months after recovery.
  • Ebola symptoms can appear from 2 to 21 days after exposure to the virus, with 8 to 10 days being the most common. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain (myalgias/arthralgias), weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
  • Hemorrhagic symptoms include broken blood vessels in the eyes (conjunctival hemorrhage), easy bruising, and GI bleeding.

Reporting:

Contact the Infectious Disease Attending on call or Infection Control for further guidance.
Immediately report all suspected cases of EVD to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) at 866-692-3641866-692-3641 .

For additional, accurate information, please visit the CDC’s webpage: http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola.

We will continue to keep you updated.

Hemorrhagic fever is without question the worst way to die -- ever. Combine that with the fact that you can before you die share your hemorrhagic fever with your entire family, some of your neighbours, and half the people on the bus, and well it's just too much like a nightmare to get over it easily.

If I start bleeding brom my eyues and asshole, I can think of a few neighbors of mine that will be hearing a knock on their door....and a few relatives as well.   Folks on the bus won't be worrying as we don't have buses down here in the sticks.    We have two idiotic friends who are retired, and are leaving for Africa next week to help move their Dr. Son and his 4 unsuspecting children and wife there for a Missionaly trip.   Planning on spending two months over there.   We're babysitting their dog.....I told them upon their return I would be dropping the dog off at their house.  No need to pick it up here at mine.   Oh...and don't plan on getting anywhere near me for at least another 6 months.

If there is ever a quarantine alert or martial law imposed anywhere in the U.S., you better quickly head to the grocery and liquor store and stock up for months.

Yes I believe this report in its entirety.  Its quite common for a hospital to take an extremly sick patient,  AKA, "The Man"  promptly inform ABC and CBS as to what "The Man" came in for and what his condition is or might be.  Not exactly the normal protocal, especially concerning patient/doctor confidentiallity.   If this is government's notion of ensuring calm of the citizens and proving protocols exist in an emergency, I'd hate to think what they would do in order to start a panic.

"The Man recently traveled to West Africa.  Couldn't be more precise than that.  Recently could be 3 months ago or 3 days ago.  Timing would seem to be of paramount importance.  You tell me he has been back in country for 3 days, maybe.  We find out "The Man" got back in country 3 months ago and the hospital giving out the info, the media reporting without defining "recently" should all be publicly flogged.

If I really had a juandiced view of the situation I would think the government orchestrated the entire event.  First they had to have the disease. They got it in Ebola.  Second they had to find a way to inform Americans that it was indeed capable of finding its way on American soil.  Accomplished by flying back 2 "sick" patience and 24 hour news cycle.  Now, they had to get citizens to believe they could be at risk.  "The Man"  "recently" and unescorted, on his own flew back from "a West African country with" known cases" of Ebola.  That was actually fairly easy text book operation.  Magic act now if full swing as the news media has its story to tell a million times over the next week with all Americans sititng on the edge of their seats wating for the outcome.

Question:  WTF is really about to happen now that the populace is fully distracted?

Possiblilites:  Travel restrictions, capital controls, total skull fucking by Russia/Ukraine situation, major scandal at highest levels of government, Protectionist sanctions, not punitive mind you but in the name of safety.  GM and or BofA totally nationalized, Pre orchestrated major selloff in the market?  Hey at least you don't have Ebola.

If you can dream it, then I say its a possibility as these Think Tank fuckers have considered every possible scenario for every possible event.  They just pull out their "if, then statements" and go to town.  As in, "if this were to happen, then we do such and such"

Next 48 hours could be very interesting.

If I didn't know the human species is pathetic and is doomed to just (somehow) get worse then this would be upsetting and I would hope it wouldn't spread. Since I do know there is zero hope for the species and most of the population just doesn't give a fuck about anything other than themselves and their social media lives then I say I hope this spreads and gets so bad it wipes out the humans and the rest of the species in this world can live in peace rather than have humans keep fucking things up for them.

New York is now 40% foreigners. In order to tell those dang whites people that they are bad, the 40% is virtually all non-white and heavily from Africa. Customs agents have been fighting the illegal importation of the same kind of "bush meat" that carries the Ebola virus in the illegal importations, hiding of the meat in various ways, through customs and on air flights.

Here are a couple of other numbers:

1. 80% of the urban population of Sierra Leone have no running water. Exactly how are they to abide by the "wash" rules to prevent ebola?

2. 50% of the urban population of Nigeria have no running water. Exactly how are they to abide by the "wash" rules to prevent ebola?

Nigeria's, for instance, waterways are completely polluted, as the human waste and other waste is thrown into the streams and other bodies of water. No studies on whether the water coming out of the tap for the 50% who do have running water actually have Clean running water.

In a "disguised" game, placed on various gamer sites a few years ago, it's said that the CDC was looking to collect information on how/when/why people would break out of cordoned/quaratined areas. Apparently the results were not good. The breakouts were frequent and many, including animals such as dogs.

Now ask yourself, will the five-minute-Americans (sure, come on over; we want to self-destruct America via immigrants who aren't anything like us; ) abide by CDC/WHO rules when they won't in their own country? The idjat mayor of New York (the communist who is the brother from another mother of Oboma) Bill de Blasio has said he wants to build giant free housing units to the skies for the inhabitants of NY. Put a little ebola virus in that situation and have him go around hugging all those people he wants to "help."

Course if they hadn't been brought here....what would he do with his time and all that money stolen via "taxes" aka business fees, licenses, et al?

Thanks for the #s. That's surprisingly consistent with the reported 8-10 avg day incubation period and the bit below. The forward plot isn't so pretty though.

Derek Gatherer, a virologist at Britain’s University of Lancaster, said Ebola was not "super-infectious”. Each case is expected to lead to two or three more, similar to a flu outbreak and much lower than diseases like measles, where one case could lead to 12 to 18 more.

Just like the aftermath of 9/11 - the actual event of Ebola leads to something MUCH worse! With Obama's executive order YOU can now be detained indefinitely, quarantined, and be subjected to tests and 'treatments' which you likely will have with or without consent - and get to pay for. And you don't have to actually be sick - as long as some government worker 'thinks' you are sick - such as having a cough, or sneeze, or horrors of horrors -- you hang out at ZH!

What concerns me is that in a couple if weeks kids will go back to school and college. Between the Tb problems with the illegal immigrants this issue has me very concerned. I would expect a news blackout or some other distraction to crop up (and some Hill and Knowleton) PR blitz to arrive shortly.

Furthermore, one thing I do regret is not getting a Tb inoculation. You can't get them here in the US but you can in Canada. I've had the Hep series due to my previous job and the drawback of having the Tb inoculation is that you will test positive on the skin test. Just have the documentation that you were inoculated just in case.

When did that happen??? I know for a fact back a few years ago the only place I could get it was Canada.  (I also will cite the Canada Meds issue for cancer patients). My biggest concern now is for the kids and Tb in the school system. While Ebola is a problem and maybe merits too much attention, the Tb issue in schools is a very real problem and while the PR machine is pushing Ebola, the bigger problem may be the TB. I don't trust the bastards. Could be both.

I got vaccinated in March 2008 when I went in for a Yellow Fever booster, but I also went to an infectious disease specialist in DC (who actually had YF in stock). The CDC travel clinic directory might list someone closer to you: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/find-clinic

Alternatively, I told two of my US relatives to get vaccinated a few months ago, their doctor works at the only hospital with a level 1 trauma center in the area and they didn't mention any significant delays if they had to have it shipped.

People don't understand that the jump going from no risk of any kind to even some very small amount is essentially an infinite increase in risk, no matter how small it remains. That is why everyone got so angry when the CDC imported ebola into a regional hospital.

Now that Ebola has hit the big time, I can't resist a little reprise:

IT'S EBOLAVILLA!

Nibbling on monkey brain cake, got a slight headache,

All the dead locals are covered in petrol and oil,
protected for osmosis
, got infected by replication and endocytosis,
See those funeral pyres, the bodies are appearing to boil.

Wasting away again in Ebolaville,
the virus is making a full intestinal assault,
Some people claim the Reston monkeys are to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

Don't know the reason that I stayed here all season,
My gums and eyes have taken on a blood red hue,
But it's a real beauty, an African cutie,
I should have remembered to bring condoms to the zoo.

Wasting away again in Ebolaville,
the virus is making a full body assault,
Some people claim that bat shit is to blame,
Now I think, hell it could be my fault.

I could use a visit to a beauty shop, my head's spinning like a top
Cut my heel, oh, can see straight through to bone,
Ebola's like being in a blender, and soon it will render,
Bowel movements and vomit – I can no longer hang on.

Wasting away again in Ebolaville,
Every second's one closer to the burial vault,
Some people claim Doctors Without Borders is to Defame,
But I know, it's my own damn fault.

Yes, some people claim the local hookers are to blame,
We all know, it's my own damn fault.

I love you all.  I know, too soon.  Pray for Adebayour!

The problem is a pandemic dovetails so nicely with so many conspiracy theories, that it is taken as fact.
Pandemics tend to clean house. No one alive to remember who was responsable for the ending of the world. No one alive who would care.

It fits so well that most just accept it as true. Even if it would be a great free for all, ending in, what a new age.
Any new age will end, as a new age removes the past. New age means no control.
So why end control?

They're saying Ebola is the second deadliest virus on the plant.

What's the worst, ZIONISTS?

Ebola 2014 - worst outbreak ever - +/- 1,000 dead.

Gaza 2014 - typical mass genocide - >1,800 dead, >20,000 injured, >10,000 buildings destroyed.

Those poor Palestinians, they keep running towards the tanks and bullets.  And the Blue UN signs look so much like targets.  Something has to change.

Typical . . . Israeli Peace Prayer -

“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.”

What I hate most about situations of this sort are the statements from authorities and spokespeople of various agencies:

"All appropriate steps to keep patients, staff and visitors safe are being taken, the hospital [spokesperson] said."

Right. The appropriate step would be to put the guy in a hazmat suit and ship him back to his home country, and ban all flights from ebola regions and passengers with passport stamps from those regions.

Or again:

"There is always the possibility that someone with an infectious disease can enter the United States," CDC spokeswoman Barbara Reynolds said Monday. "The public health concern is whether it would spread, and, if so, how quickly.'"

Could anyone say anything more insipid, or with greater insult to the intelligence of the general public? Who hires these people?

It's hard to get. It is not airborne.

Doctors without borders has never had a case because they are extremely careful and work in a buddy system to get in and get out of protective gear.

The company that provided the cure is a small biotech firm from San Deigo with from 5-9 employees. It is not secret, they were in contract with the US gov to come up with a cure or treatment. It had never been tested on humans but the male Doc was so ill that it was worth a try, because he was going to die. He didn't.

Now back to the other wars.

It is not airborne--well unless you count droplets in the air.  Or sweat, snot etc. wiped on surfaces.  Using a specific epidemiological term to deflect plain English (in which 'airborne' means that the virus can spread without DIRECT contact with the victim) is slanted.

The doctor was near death, yet he was ambulatory and walking about.  Really.  How extraordinary.

The 'treatment' helped, and saved him.  Sorry but that's just bullshit.  The half of humanity that can live through this (on a good day) without 'magic beans' is proof enough of that.

Whether that is true or not doesn't absolve the fact if your job is contain potential pandemic outbreaks, you don't move an infected individual out of a quarantine zone into an area where it hasn't spread yet and risk another localized outbreak.YOU DON'T FUCKING DO IT AS MATTER OF SIMPLE COMMON SENSE IF PART OF YOUR FUCKING JOB IS TO PREVENT A PANDEMIC LIKE VIRUS FROM SPREADING ANY FURTHER.

They could have easily tested that cure or treatment if that is the case on the somebody over in Liberia and not just him it has been raging over then since at least back in June.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-26/ebola-outbreak-worst-ever-needs...

I'm getting the feeling you people want this to be the end. What possible motive would you have to want this to be an out of control pandemic?

These people are Americans and they have the right to be treated here. The conditions are much better for their survival than in some remote outpost in Africa.

Wrong. If you are firefighter trying to contain a fire you don't take a smoldering ember or burning branch, etc and transport out outside the fire zone to extinguish it. Even a low information indvidual understands that you just don't do that in the first place....

That is just plain stupidity and you know it. Only an idiot or someone playing politics or some other malevolent intent does something like that and then uses that sort of a justification. Those doctors took a hippocratic oath to do no harm and fullfilling that oath would imply to not leave a quarantine zone to potentially infect other people. My guess is that doctor was transported against his will or was sick enough he didn't know what was happening.

I doubt anything will come of those two as far as spreading it.  Will it come here? Maybe.  I am going to be as careful as I need to be but I am not going to tear my hair out in fear.

The US just sent 50 more doctors  to Africa, if anything they will use this to push deeper into Africa because they have wanted that continent for a long time. Ebola is a great distraction from all the wars.

"A Chinese city that has been ground zero for outbreaks including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and bird flu is now on guard against a disease more frightening than either of those.

Machines have been set up at Baiyun to test incoming passengers’ temperatures, with anyone registering above 37.5 degrees Celsius (99.5 degrees Fahrenheit) being made to undergo a blood test. “We’ve already pulled people aside with high fevers, but so far none of them have tested positive for the Ebola virus,” the airport’s Mr. Chen said."

Apparently the MSH letter is not entirely true. "It is important to note that EVD can only be transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. The infection cannot be transmitted through casual contact."

This research paper from 2012

http://www.nature.com/srep/2012/121115/srep00811/full/srep00811.html

demonstrates that it is very likely that transmission can happen without contact through air droplets. Also Ebola is infectious on surfaces wet or dry for at least 23 days (per CDC) so any body fluids left on a surface like a door knob or subway pole can theoretically cause infection.

A good read on preparing for worse case senario is http://thebookgallery2014.blogspot.com/2014/08/beyond-ebola-preparation....

It's not yet HIV but it will get there.  And you the American taxpayer will foot the bill.

Why?  Because the free movement of people, infinite immigration, and saving everybody on the planet is more important than protecting American citizens.

Bono and Bill Gates said as much, so it must be true, since they are Gods that must be obeyed.

Bringing Ebola to America had nothing to do with humanitarianism. It's all about scaring the American public out of their wits so they demand a vaccine. And that's, exactly, what's happening.
