New York City Hospital Quarantines Man With Ebola-Like Symptoms Who Walked Into ER

UPDATE (via Mt.Sinai Press Conference):

* * *

As CBS reports,

A patient at Mount Sinai hospital is being tested after traveling to a country where the Ebola virus is present, the hospital said in a statement.

The man arrived at Mount Sinai’s emergency room early Monday morning with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.

The man told doctors he had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola is present, the hospital said.

The man has been placed in “strict isolation” and is undergoing various tests to determine the cause of the symptoms, the hospital said.

All appropriate steps to keep patients, staff and visitors safe are being taken, the hospital said.

Let's hope we do not start adding to this...

*  *  *

NY Times adds,

A hospital spokeswoman, Dorie Klissas, said that to protect the patient’s privacy the hospital was not making public his occupation, which country he had been in, whether he had been exposed to a patient with Ebola there, or whether he had close contacts like family members, friends or co-workers who were also at risk. Ms. Klissas said the patient’s blood was being tested for Ebola, but she declined to say when the test results would be available.

...

Ian Michaels, a spokesman for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, said that another patient was isolated at a hospital in the city last week after arriving on a flight from West Africa and showing symptoms found in Ebola patients.

That man was screened at Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday night and taken to Bellevue Hospital. He had a fever, but within a day the fever had gone away and it became clear that he did not have Ebola. Mr. Michaels did not know the details of the tests performed on the man.

“We are on a heightened state of alert,” he said. “We have instructed all 11 of our hospitals to follow C.D.C. guidelines and be on the lookout for Ebola-like symptoms.”

As we noted previously, this is what to expect if Ebola comes to America

RE: Patient with Febrile Illness and Recent Travel to West Africa

A patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, after recent travel to a West African country where Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been reported, presented to the Emergency Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital last night. The patient has been placed in strict isolation, and is currently undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of the symptoms. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff.

The Incident Command Centers of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai Health System have been activated and are working together in a unified fashion. The Mount Sinai Health System has been activated to a (HICS) Level 1 Alert. The Mount Sinai Hospital has been activated to (HICS) Level 2.

The Department of Emergency Management and the Division of Infectious Diseases at The Mount Sinai Hospital are employing all necessary infection control measures to protect patients and staff and to continue to provide the best care to our patients.  It is important to note that EVD can only be transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. The infection cannot be transmitted through casual contact.

General Information Regarding EVD:

  • As of August 1, 2014, approximately 1,300 cases (suspected and confirmed) had been reported in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
  • EVD is a severe, often fatal disease (case fatality is 55 to 60%).
  • Along with direct contact with bodily fluids, including infected blood, urine, sweat, semen and breast milk, exposure to objects (e.g., needles, sharps) contaminated with infected bodily fluids can spread the infection.
  • Patients with EVD are potentially infectious from onset of fever until weeks or months after recovery.
  • Ebola symptoms can appear from 2 to 21 days after exposure to the virus, with 8 to 10 days being the most common. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain (myalgias/arthralgias), weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
  • Hemorrhagic symptoms include broken blood vessels in the eyes (conjunctival hemorrhage), easy bruising, and GI bleeding.

Reporting:

Contact the Infectious Disease Attending on call or Infection Control for further guidance.
Immediately report all suspected cases of EVD to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) at 866-692-3641866-692-3641 .

For additional, accurate information, please visit the CDC’s webpage: http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola.

We will continue to keep you updated.

They now say he doesn't have Ebola, considering he was in West Africa take your pick at the next deadly virus.

I just picked this up in the local paper here in India:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/Secret-serum-working-on-Ebol...

Dr Brantly was given the serum in Africa.

He showed immediate improvement.
Read the comments after the story, they are a mixed bag. I think some of the readers of the Times must post here!

Some commenters said they had to give it to an American first. Had they inoculated an African and they croaked, the US would be blamed.

Of course they first administered it in Africa whether it is true or not to deal with the backlash coming for moving this guy into the US while he is still contagous.....

It doesn't absolve the fact they still moved him while he was sick. But everyone will keep ignoring that little fact while spinning bullshit and hoopty doo.

I agree, as usual, with your post(s).

The point is there appears to be a drug which knocks out the virus.

It is also known that giving a transfusion of same blood-type to same blood-type of a survivor to a patient also shows + results.

There is also too much hysteria going on about this. It is an incredibly dangerous virus, but too many people are acting like they are in a zombie movie. I have made light of it, too.

Anyone infected should stay in the affected area under quarantine, IMO. I am not a doctor, however, or a viral specialist. I  have to trust that those guys know what they are doing, even if it does not make sense to a layman.

The CDC's job is contain not spread so with that in mind assuming they aren't totally incompetent, let us assume some sort of ulterior motive for spreading the disease and creating FUD which would include political connections to high level officials to have just that sort of decision pushed through against dissent in the ranks.

If we discard that the motive is Ovirus trying to purposely sicken the US population then we have to ask cui bono?

Which leads to your statement

The point is there appears to be a drug which knocks out the virus.

With that in mind let's tie a few things together here.

(Reuters) - Shares of Canada's Tekmira Pharmaceutical Corp , which has ambitions of producing the first treatment for the deadly Ebola virus, have skyrocketed as the worst-ever outbreak of the virus intensified in West Africa.

While human tests of the company's treatment, TKM-Ebola, were put on hold last month due to safety concerns, investors scrambled to buy its stock, sending shares up 1.5 percent to $13 in midday Nasdaq trading, and up more than 50 percent over the past fortnight.

...

The epicentre of the current Ebola epidemic is the Kenema Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. BeforeItIsNews claims the hospital houses a US a biosecurity level 2 bioweapons research lab. That claim is unconfirmed, however, this we do know.

Analysis of clinical samples from suspected Lassa fever cases in Sierra Leone showed that about two-thirds of the patients had been exposed to other emerging diseases, and nearly nine percent tested positive for Ebola virus. The findings, published in this month’s edition of Emerging Infectious Diseases, demonstrates that Ebola virus has been circulating in the region since at least 2006—well before the current outbreak, reports Global BioDefense.

According to GBD, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases has been operating in the area since 2006, supposedly working on "diagnostic tests."

...

You can piece together the story here if this is the real driving factor behind the FUD being spread concerning this ebola outbreak including transporting a doctor from a containment zone into an area where the disease hadn't spread yet by an agency whose fucking job it is to prevent the spread of the disease not spread it.

Since this is a finance site maybe some detective work is in order on (TKMR) (TKM.TO) to see if there was improper trading or movements that would indicate insider information concerning a manufactured outbreak and FUD campaign to pump this companies stock when their miracle cure was announced just as the masses were whipped up into panic.

If there was the Tylers should probably do a little piece on the findings.

This sounds like the begining of AIDS. I lived in San Francisco then and people were in a panic.

The virus is still out there but if you don't put your schlong were it don't belong you didn't get it.

or shared needles.

I bought a house in the 80s and they disclosed to me that the man had died at home of AIDS.

The house had a well and septic and I had a 9month old baby, did I buy it. Yes, and I made 80,000

dollars in 15 months when I sold it due to other reasons.

Panic is stoooooopid.

So a modern major medical center with skilled doctors and high tech testing equipment has had the patient for 8 plus hours and doesn't know whether the patient has Ebola. You aren't safe, you never were.

What is this "safe" thing?

Life is always at risk.

I could have died a hundered times so far, but I didn't.

Because if I am here it's because I need to be here.

I have a very rich spiritual life, this event is just illuision and scientists agree with me.

None of this is matter, not me, not the universe. It is made up of mind and spirit.

Prana

You were good through this statement.

You don't need to be anywhere, what you appear to need, even as you superciliously go on and on about your spiritual superiority to the rest of us, is illusion. We are always dying. Stay with that, that has value. What is important to you in your small here and now local? Stay with that. Saturn, prana, whatever. These are sensitizing concepts. We are trapped by words that point at things but are not the things. They enable and constrain. The words become idols you worship, you lose your path even as you try to use them to be on it. Fuck Saturn (lousy car anyway), fuck Prana (but I really do like their clothes), fuck your dichotomy between mind and spirit. Fuck Buddha, God, and Satan. If you really believe the first 4 lines of your post, you will see, with me, how the rest is total fucking bullshit illusion set up to somehow reassure yourself that because of your faith, you are safe.

You ain't lucky or a star. Neither am I.

just some points of interest...

according to the press release they are currently running a battery of tests on this individual in an attempt to find the culprit, what illness he has come down with, so I think the statement from the NYDOH is a little misleading.

the victim presented with only early symptoms associated with ebola, these symptoms are also associated with many other illnesses, everything from the flu to bacterial infections to food poisoning, but that's Ebola's nasty little trick often times even medical professionals in aren't able to diagnose it until the later stages. what this tells us is that they don't yet really know if he is positive for ebola or not but they are hoping for a positive result on something, anything else that could account for his symptoms.

if there was a clear negative result on the test for the virus then why not just report that, sound the all clear and get on with life? instead we get a very non committal probably not but we haven't exactly ruled it out yet either type of evasive runaround. why is that? is this a delay tactic? or were the initial tests really that inconclusive yielding neither a positive or negative result?

I can tell you this, I would not want to be the one to have to tell a city of eight million people that there is a virus that kills 60% of those it infects on the loose...perhaps they are trying to figure out the best way to break the bad news and what to do after that ugly bomb gets dropped.

to be continued...

It's a psychological fact that when you see something you fear, like a pandemic or WWIII or the most likely, a huge Econ crash, you talk and joke about it. I'd rather be here with folks that get it off their chest than on Yahoo with people who are the lowest common denominator and can barely speak in full sentences. Nobody wants this shit. We share info to stay ahead. If that's creepy so be it. Yes, some are so far gone from any hope that they basically hope for the inevitable, but most have wives and lives and kids and family and want them spared....so we discuss. We form plans of actions. We prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I side with this statement. Nobody wants this. And even those who joke won't feel that way if it ends up next door. What bothers me the most is the media spin telling everyone it's nothing to worry and go about your business. No one knows where this is going, but honesty and truth saves lives. Dumbing it down will just put masses as risk. It's dangerous. I'm a grown up and well educated. We studied Ebola in high school. Everyone who has an understanding of this disease knows how critical it is to contain it. Period.

Thanks. I was thinking about how I would respond to that post but you did it for me.

Right now I have no fear about this disease spreading to my community - but it bears watching. And I have concerns about how this emerging health threat has or has not been communicated and whether any future communication will be truthful.

Given the propaganda we have been fed for decades, I find it hard to accept any official pronouncements on any subject and tend to carry out my own research. On ZH, I often find invaluable information and alternative points of view both in articles and in the comments by trusted posters. Yes there may be some commentators who wish for the end of world but most contributing do not. In fact, I would argue that most (who are willing to spend some time commenting on an article) really do care about our current state and actually think about how it can be improved.

And prepping ... just last winter I had some ice storm refugees. My sister, husband and three-month old babe. Yes I'm in Canada where these things happen more regularly but this was in a large city and the power was out for days to a large segment of the population.  In years to come, whether a crisis is caused by weather, war or disease, I want to be ready to take care of myself and help my family.

My two cents

Not speaking in riddles, but when so many even within my beloved country cannot recognize the evil within; stripping out the last vestiges of the Republic, where a DNC ad in 2012 had the temerity to claim that 'we all belong to each other, because we all belong to our government,' when evil is called good and good is called evil, one begins to almost hope for something, anything to even the score against those who lap the blood of those desperate to simply be left alone.   Obviously, I only speak for myself, I feel alone and abandoned by even the "good intentioned" men, of which even those seem, seem to be in short supply.  Freedom and Liberty begin with the individual in any nation, or epoch...

It is everywhere on the net.  The world wants to see America dissolved, or is it "Ready Replies R Us" doing all that typing?  I am Canadian raised in America and I have traveled to enough places, including Europe, as a tourist to appreciate America.  This country, at one time, left you alone.  You could be who you were, there was a niche for everyone.  Poor leadership ruined the state of mind of the Americans.  The television shows are making mediocre actors millionaires and reality shows are showing the best of the worst, rude ingrats.  But I have loved living here and am fighting so hard to keep this country together than I run to its defense.  The country has been good to me and my family.  My neighbors during childhood took me in when mother was on a drinking binge ... well, it's true.  They fed me and let me sleep there and never made me feel embarrassed.  I will defend America until my dying day.
