Why the Heck Are We Bringing Ebola Patients Into the U.S.?

George Washington's picture

There’s no cure for Ebola.

Ebola is deadly and contagious.  90% of those who catch it die quickly.

Normally, the extreme lethality of Ebola means that the virus quickly “burns itself out”.  Specifically, if a villager eats an infected fruit bat and comes down with Ebola, it quickly kills the villager and everyone around him … and then the spread stops because it can’t travel to the next village over.

In other words, extreme deadliness of Ebola normally insures that it doesn’t spread very far.

But – for the first time in history – it is now spreading worldwide. As Michael Snyder notes:

#1 As the chart below demonstrates, the spread of Ebola is starting to become exponential…

#2 This is already the worst Ebola outbreak in recorded history by far.

#3 The head of the World Health Organization says that this outbreak “is moving faster than our efforts to control it“.

#4 The head of Doctors Without Borders says that this outbreak is “out of control“.

#5 So far, more than 100 health workers that were on the front lines fighting the virus have ended up contracting Ebola themselves.  This is happening despite the fact that they go to extraordinary lengths to keep from getting the disease.

***

As Paul Craig Roberts so aptly put it the other day, all it would take is “one cough, one sneeze, one drop of saliva, and the virus is loose“.

As Dr. Sanjay Gupta notes, there have been lapses in safety at the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. hospitals in treating infectious diseases.

So why is the U.S. flying in Ebola patients to be treated on U.S. soil?

Yes, I feel sorry for the American aid workers who were trying to do good in Africa by helping those infected with Ebola.  But the risk of losing containment of this beast is too high.

who exactly did not consent to being at risk of being exposed to ebola virus?

you've consented, as have i, and everyone else, by virtue of existing on the same planet / biosphere as this highly contagious organism.

the earth! love it or leave it!

The simple answer to: Why were those people in Africa in the first place?

Bible Thumping...they have a Bible in one hand and a sack of flour and syringe in the other.

While I have a generally low opinion of the organizations these two Americans were working for (particularly Samaritan's Purse) I will give them the benefit of the doubt that the were truly trying to help those infected with Ebola.  However, the political connections cannot be overlooked here.  Samaritan's Purse was founded by Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, "friend" of countless politicos of all stripes.  Not to mention the added bonus of scoring points with the megachurch sheeple by bringing two of their own home (and the votes/$$$ they bring).

Not sure this should be chalked up to malice (intentional exposure of millions) yet - greed, self-aggrandizement and sheer willful stupidity/incompetence are always to be expected when dealing with the political class and its lackeys.

Sadly those of us that understand this are still fucked regardless.

Rabbies was fatal.

Syphillis was fatal.

Polio was delibetating.

Turberculosis...

HIV...

If people didn't study and try to find a cure or vaccine, these diseases would still be fatal. You can't hide from diseases in this globalized world; you must do research to combat them. There's a lot of panic on ZH about this for no good reason.

Potato, there is so much wrong with your post I would write a book refuting your stance. Please take some time and study the organisms you mentioned. In fact, focus on rabies and Ebola. Learning about each will show you why developing a vaccine for rabies is FAR easier than Ebola. Ebola uses the hosts own immune system against it. Postulate how you would develop a vaccine knowing this. Rabies has sites that bind neutralizing antibodies.

Homework Bonus Question: Why hasn't there been an effective vaccine developed against HIV? Believe me, it's not there hasn't been enough money thrown at it.

Dearest Miffed,

i am -- and almost always have been -- nodding along as i read your posts...you were very kind and gracious in your dismissal of this twit.

and though i'm nearly near-panicked over this latest fad in fatal disease (and do believe i have reason to be), i'm writing because i cannot seem to get a recent post of your outta my head.

you probably should never have shared your 'smooth' side (you know what i'm talking about) with janus; but you did; and now it's difficult to picture you clothed.

which calls to mind a favored Bible verse: "temptation would not but come into the world; but woe unto them through whom temptation commeth"...but i always except, and in fact embrace (literally), the kinds of temptation that comes with waxing.  so it's not really woe so much as WHOA!

as for the current world and its waning, i'll adapt the Bible quote: "ebola would not but come into america; but woe unto them through whom ebola commeth"...and in this case, i mean WOE! & WHOA!

wink (right back atcha),

janus

Dear Janus,

Thanks for the laugh in an otherwise dull morning. A friend of mine in Germany just emailed. Walked by a street named Dickhardt and thought of me. Mr is always relieved when he is out of the country knowing some evoke my lascivious nature quite naturally. I must place you in the correct category. However my personal habits may prove unsatisfactory to others and the reversal of said practice is unlikely to elicit arousal in one who prefers bushier regions.

Mr has some artfully done boudoir shots of me he proudly used as screen savers for work. The females complained and they had to be removed, even the ones more amply clothed. He now works primarily from home where he can enjoy his views physically and virtually. Perhaps, if I am ever without my man, I shall investigate toupees for females. But this would probably cause more laughter than lust. But I digress.....

The panic you fear is based on realizing you have no method to deal with this problem. All here know that when conditions are right, the bankers will be handled swiftly ( guillotine, rope, nail gun, tall building). But something measured in Angstroms? Anything could be unsafe. A beloved toothbrush, door nob or sex partner. And the results of a mistake are too frightening to be imagined. So fear is warranted but panic will not serve or keep you safe. Keep your eyes open and I will help if I can. ;-)

Darling Miffed,

i am above all pleased by your response, in that i feared janus had been a bit untoward...all those vexing downvotes and i was grieved to think one may be yours.  haters are a sad lot, are they not?

nevertheless, i must confess that you've already helped; and in the fashion i find most pleasant.

the Mr. is no doubt a most happy man; as there are few more favored treasures than a spirited girl...particularly those who like to frolic on the mattress.  i've always thought the world could do with a bit more frolicking...i hate to think this ebola would put the kibosh on my frolicking plans...now that would be a pity.

thanking you for all your help.

smoothly yours,

janus

We are fighting to keep staph in the hospitals from completely overrunning all antibiotics.  When people assume that everything in the future will happen according to the ways things have hapened in the past it is called uniformitarianism , a fallacy in reasoning about current events.

If they'd do a little bit of research then they can pretty much solve the staph problem:

Polio was a lot more than debilitating.

If he was still alive, you could have asked my dad.

Debilitating is not how he would have described it, I can guarantee.

Post Polio syndrome was what finally got him.

Since the dollar is being abandoned, the US will extort the world and it's own citizens for a supposed vaccine.

A true pandemic will not be a means towards more control.  It will break down the very fabric of society and break the existing power structures.  It is in the best interest of anybody who is in power who also wishes to remain in power to prevent a true pandemic.

I read the explanation given by the head of the CDC for bringing the sick doctor(s) to Atlanta. It went something like this. He's an American and has a right to return to America where he can receive the best of care. Clearly he does not have ObamaCare or he would have been left to die overseas. The explanation stinks to high heaven.

One would think that the head of the Centers for Disease Control would know that the best way to control the spread of a highly infectious disesase is to NOT put those infected on a transocean trip to another major urban area.  American or not he voluntarily went over there.  I am sorry he got sick, but what about the Americans here. What about our rights to not get put in harm's way.  His logic is flawed at best.  This doesnt add up.
