Virii are indeed the "living dead" or zombies of the microscopic world. The vast majority of them are RNA strands.....which means they don't have some of the things necessary to classify it as actual "life".....like a cell membrane or the additional strand of RNA to make it DNA.
Even if the virus in question is a strand of DNA it's an incomplete type that has the ability to jump from gene to gene taking what it needs or modifying the host gene to its liking.
And then.....like computer virii....seeks to replicate itself......many times to the detriment of the host.
Like the one time big secret in the television series "The Walking Dead".....we're all infected. It's just a matter of time and a matter of how that infection manifests itself. And a matter of how it is transported and transmitted to a new host.
Virii are THE earliest "life" forms. And in such hostile and ever changing environments of the early Earth had to be most adaptable. This is where we get the word "mutagen". Virii had to mutate to survive. The best way to do that was to be a fairly simple thing......and what it was lacking in its simplicity it could always find in a more "complex" host.
We are playing in their world. They've owned it from the beginning. And the more we scratch out the surface of some forest we've never been in.....or force animals from their forest homes to places where they have never been exposed to certain types of virii......then it should be no great surprise that we are seeing an uptick in the number of cases of various virii outbreaks amongst animals and eventually humans.
The question becomes....not how we can stop or prevent the viral outbreaks we have now.....such as Ebola. It should be....what kind of mutations to the existing ones are going to crop up now that we are seeing more and more jumps from animals to humans.
And most important of all.....what kinds of these "zombies" lie unknown in the earth waiting for us masters of the universe to expose to the world in our quest for ever more "stuff" ?
Jumbotron, your musing is informative, thanks, and somewhat innocently entertaining, but your "big secret in the television series "The Walking Dead".....we're all infected" reminds me of the type of predictive programming that I saw in "24" where a black POTUS was introduced to the hive mind as 'fait acompli'.
We now live in the post evolutionary era, where synthetic biology has far more rampant potential than anything remnant in a dark jungle IMHO. And since the human genome project has identified the approx 30,000 markers in our DNA, there is a race on to develop the means to deliver gene targeted drugs for medical use, so I can't believe that such reasearch is not being carried out by the Military Industrial Security Complex, for obvious purposes. Nothing (short of an alien invasion, and a pandemic may be blamed on same, or meteorite, or space dust) could cyrstalise fear and loathing in a population as a pandemic, requiring 'government to save us'. I could imagine people RUNNING to a FEMA camp if it were perceived that was a 'safe place' as compared to a 'zombpocalyse' on the streets. BioTerror is the NuTerror. Top down, and bottom up. It's invisible, lethal, delayed incubation has the capacity to immobilise communities, make individuals mistrust others, close transport (resupply in just-in-time economies), paralyse countries with 'shelter in communities'. It concerns me greatly that another 'classic' symptom from the time of feudalism (plague) is getting so much media traction and resultant consciousness seeding, at the same time Game of Thrones (peddling bloodlust, rule of might, laws made by command, endless war etc) has launched.
Far too little public discourse on the risks of unregulated synthetic biological research and the facilities in which it takes place (not required to have building safety standards applied to nuclear reactors for example)

I'm more afraid of these dark agendas than something remnant in a rainforest or even exhumed from a diseased corpse, though the total top down control over populations from either/any, and the willingness with which populations would not only embrace, but demand it (control), would be too useful a tool to not be used by those bent on a Georgia Guidestones outcome for the planet (in the case that they also have a Fukushima antidote for themselves).
Ponder: Is there any connection with the 2045 agenda, and the utter destruction of the planetary biosphere that DNA based lifeforms rely on? ...to lend imperative to the transference of (ex)human intelligence to cyborgs, for it's very survival?
For all humanity I hope we've not 'opened our own casket' with our fine minds and science. Antidote to these indeed dark times in a moral vacuum: hope, love, faith.
Don't get me wrong. Nowhere in my "musings" did I mention wanting government to save us. They can't.....therefore no need to ask.
But where do you think we got the "source code" to do all this genetic engineering ? The "we're all infected" secret in Walking Dead is not programming. We are indeed....right this instant....you and I....infected with a wide variety of bacteria and virii. None of which.....(to my knowledge....knock on wood) came from a laboratory. Now...our immune system handles most of these every day without us knowing it. And when we do know it its from the effects of the battle (sniffling, runny nose, fever, aches, the shits....what ever.)
All this Uoptian "transhumanism" bullshit will never be fully realized. That takes a hellava lot of money and cheap energy. We don't have that any more. The Jungle will spit out something....or what we already have inside or is inside an animal waiting to show off it's brand new mutation will take care of any hope of "transhumanism" in short order.

I find these little life-forms fascinating. And, I DO see viruses as life-forms, although there is disagreement there. Not 'life' in the traditional sense we'd expect, perhaps, but life still the same.
Disease is the result of some kind of misunderstanding between host and organism. But we have, living within us now, many times more 'critters' than there are people on the planet. Entire colonies of other creatures inhabit our digestive system, and have made themselves SO useful to us that we can't live without them. I'll bet that long eons ago, when our distant ancestors first became colonized with these guys, it made many of them sick. Maybe even killed a lot of them.
Now we're best buds. We even feed them yogurt to keep them healthy and happy.
Viruses are believed by some to spur evolution, through the genetic material they introduce to a species. What if the development of the human brain was actually spurred long ago by a primitive meningitis-type virus? Killed off most of the population, but the survivors grew extra brain cells that functioned as a 'callous' at first, then stuck around and became part of a bigger brain that caused us to 'jump' the way we did evolutionary-wise...Might explain why we are the only species on Earth to have progressed to this extreme. And the only branch of early hominids to have survived...

It's humbling to realize though humans have approximately 1 trillion cells in their bodies, there are approximately 10 trillion bacteria living in and on it. So we are outnumbered 10 to 1. Given this fact, it is not a stretch to postulate we are merely a mobile vessel for them. We have foolishly declared war and they appear to be winning where I sit.

This is not a theory, this is a historicial fact, as any number of first-hand eyewitness documentary accounts mention buboes as the most striking symptom of the main strain of plague (there were 2 others), hence the name bubonic.

Evidence is that the black rat from which the flea carrying the virus is not a predominant vermin to most of Europe and the UK. Evidence from the writing of the time (1300's outbreak) had a list of symptoms similar to the plague, but without the bulboes, and which contained a fair amount of reference to bodily markings that more resembled small pox than bubonic (fits with hemmoraghic).
Haven't read that....but would not be suprised in the least that at least a part of that pandemic was regional varieties of hemmoraghic bugs similar to Ebola.
In fact.....not many people realize that right along with the Black Death in terms of devastation, there was an epidemic in Mexico in the 1500's that wiped out up to 80% of the native population. And another epidemic about 30 years later that wiped out about 50% of the survivors of the FIRST epidemic.
And guess what.....it was hemmoraghic fever brought on by rodents. And a severe mega-drought of the 500-600 year variety was underway as well. Which drove rodents into the population carrying with it the virus responsible for the outbreak.
Well.....lookee here.....we have a mega-drought in the southwest.....we have an invasion of illegal aliens from Mexico and coming through Mexico......and we have reported today of a man dying from hantavirus which is transmitted by rodents.

There was also a plague sometime between the earliest colonial contact with the area of modern America and the beginning of major colonial settlement, which destroyed a huge percentage of the indigenous population and made colonisation much easier. It was so devastating that conspiracy theorists have suggested it was introduced deliberately by the first European explorers. To my knowledge, it is not known if it actually began prior to European contact, but it's certainly not unlikely that it could have been unwittingly introduced by Europeans who did not even know it existed, for they already had natural immunity.
Well....we all know....or should know about the smallpox we brought over here. That was devastating enough on the Native Americans living here in the day.
Bubonic was just one of three forms known to have been part of the Black Death pandemic. The real killers were the pneumonic and septicemic forms. Those look a lot like a hemorrhagic fever. And pneumonic was airborne, so you didn't need the rat/flea vector to spread it anymore.

This was true. A lot of speculation on why that flu was so virulent. One theory is virulence is directly linked to living conditions. If people are in close, unsanitary conditions virulence tends to be high because of ease of transmission. Virulence tends to be lower when people are farther apart ( the virus cannot spread effectively if it kills it's host and doesn't have another readily available to continue replication). Most terrible historical plagues are concomitant with rampant poverty and poor sanitation.

If that's the case, wouldn't there be plague already in India and Africa and more places with 3rd world conditions where they don't have sanitation, I mean these places they bath in the same water with animal crap and dead bodies...
Their bodies have developed immunity to their daily conditions. Now if you were living far apart from this and went back you'd be the one with violent diarrhea having been away from the conditions you were used to.
Our whole approach is wrong. We focus on killing the invader instead of strengthening the immune response, or finding a way to shut off the more deadly effects of infection. Now we have resistant super-bugs, and we're out of ammo. Infection is inevitable, we have to deal with it. Some critters are going to hijack a ride, we don't necessarily have to succumb to them. But to think we can simply wipe them out is ridiculous.
The aftermath of the trench warfare in WWI, stress and deprivation, etc, etc was a great contributor to the millions of deaths from the Spanish Flu which we now know was H1N5, bird flu. They dug up frozen corpses in Greenland and matched the DNA samples from those 1918 corpses to the current bird flu virus.
So the talk about the virus mutating to affect humans as a recent thing is a lie then...

Not yet, they are being shipped in through a new logistics company, head of the company was formerly a best selling history book writer in the US. He gained a contract through the NEA and was able to gain all kinds of dollaz to get into the shipping biz.
I hear, though, that the blankets are made from the finest bat wool and have various local perfumes assigned.
