The CDC's Worst Nightmare (Or What Nigeria Has To Look Forward To)

Tyler Durden's picture

With more than 1600 people in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone having contracted Ebola since March, CDC Director Frieden's "deeply concerned about Lagos, Nigeria" worst nightmare looks set to come true as the pace of cases (and deaths) in the nation begins to accelerate. As the following chart shows, Nigeria - now in a state of national emergency - has this to look forward to (though on a scale significantly higher since population density is dramatically higher).

This is already the worst outbreak in history...

Which as CDC Director Frieden fears...

And it's getting worse...

(brought this post over from last Ebola thread)

In Nigeria: "According to Mr. Nyensuah, anyone caught administering fake vaccine or tablets and even spreading wrong information on the Ebola... would face prosecution"

"A local daily reported Tuesday that the nut Bitter Kola  had stopped the Ebola virus in test tubes in initial laboratory experiments, experts, including a Nigerian pharmacologist, revealed.

"Meanwhile, Minister Nyenswah is calling on the public to report anyone or group of people administering vaccines supposedly for the prevention of Ebola or any form of drug or tablets, herbs or injection in the communities to the nearest police station"

"Assistant Health Minister for Preventive Services, Tolbert Nyenswah, has disputed [that Bitter Kola is a cure]"

So it looks like the Nigerian gov't knows who it is taking orders from.

The people of Nigeria, too, are (rightly?) distrustful. "Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was imported into Nigeria recently by an American-Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, [and since then] hand sanitizers, salt and bitter kola scarcity have hit the Federal Capital Territory."

And sure 'nuff, Bitter Kola contains high levels of ascorbic acid...  (ascorbic acid = Vitamin C)

Trust the gov't.  Get the vaccine.

But the locally available natural remedy?  Avoid that.

I am not saying someone with fullblown Ebola will be cured by eating a damn Bitter Kola nut.   It IS being put forward as an effective preventative measure.

Oh, it gets even better. The CDC basically admitted to airborne transmission on Thursday and few caught the changes to their webpage about Ebola. Here it is in all its glory:

So now any person invoived in a decision to leave American ports of entry open to people from infected areas is PURPOSELY hoping to spread the disease. Much less bringing in patients. Pure treason.

You know, when people breed to the lengths they have with not a single shred of conscious for the environment in which we inhabit, the immutable laws of virology ensure this very outcome. The term useless eaters becomes somewhat self fulfilling doesn't it. This is, unfortunately, the only lesson human beings will learn. We've had centuries of time to limit human population expansion for the greater good, but we're just not capable of thinking globally. Never have. We have been thrust into a global world with very local minds. There are howls of protest if you even suggest to people they REDUCE the number of children they have, not to stop having them, just REDUCE the number. There's no saving a species that is so fucking selfish and so fucking stupid. We deserve everything that is coming our way, everyone of us. We only have ourselves to blame. Like someone said, though, kids are our future. What they can't seem to rationalise though is too many kids will be our demise. Cue the hails of protest.

Get a grip. Maybe your mother Gaia intended Ebola to evolve to dominate the world, in which case, why so anti-science?  And, from the vegan standpoint, what's wrong with so many extra people?  Doesn't Ebola deserve to eat?

Hahahaha, well that's one way of looking at it, got to think of all those bacteria and viruses. The answer though to the question "what's wrong with so many extra people" won't become apparent until it's too late. What pisses me off is that the human population will act like a tsunami. A tsunami sweeps in, creates havoc and absolute destruction and then recedes/disappears as if it was never there. The human population is growing exponentially to the point the ecosystem is destroyed (no/little native forests, no/little wildlife, no/little pristine areas of wilderness, fished out oceans, depleted or destroyed top soil, polluted waterways) at which point the human population implodes and is largely destroyed itself, anyway. Rather than have this happen why not stop NOW, before the desctruction, before the natural world is fucked.

I may as well talk to a brick wall though because people just don't seem to get it.

Perhaps "Being in the Same Room" is to account for 40,000 droplets heading towards you at 1.5 feet per second (i.e. a sneeze).

(Estimates of sneezes travelling 150 mph or more have been debunked; 1.5 feet per second  — 10 mph — is the slowest estimate I could find.)

The dosage of Vitamin C that would be required (assuming the method is actually effective) cannot be introduced through the digestive tract.

Moreover, even with intravenous, sublingual, transdermal, or rectal introduction of Vitamin C -- you are still talking about so much ACID that you need to adjust the PH level before introduction to avoid doing (significantly) more harm than good.

But taking Vitamin C or Bitter Kola Nut is good for disease prevention regardless of ebola risk, and given what ebola does to the body- a healthy dose in the system before infection might buy some time for your body to fight back before it's too late.

Though ebola's effects have been compared to "scurvy on steroids" and very low amounts of vitamin C prevents scurvy, I'm not endorsing this 7 August article; I've only skimmed and bookmarked it ( I figure when it reaches LAX I'll have a few hours to get ready   ;-) ) :

Ebola and Vitamin C: Is this Nutrient the Cure for Ebola?

...Doctors who have used vitamin C to treat disease caused by viruses often recommend taking 1,000 to 300,000 milligrams (mg) per day during a serious infection. However, these massive doses of vitamin C shouldn’t be taken when there is no viral infection. The amount of vitamin C will vary depending on how serious the viral infection is. As for Ebola, they recommend taking 100,000 to 500,000 mg of vitamin C daily until the viral infection is treated. If you experience stomach issues from taking massive doses of vitamin C, you may need to administer it intravenously...

Since the US Centers for Disease Control owns a patent on one of the strains of Ebola, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Centers for Disease Control is somehow involved in the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Africa. Planned biological attacks had happened in the past. These attacks are usually orchestrated by government agencies...

Wishful thinking and rehashed conspraciies are not going to prevent or treat ebola.

As a doc of over 40 years I have been listening to various folks shouting about the AMA and evil doctors the whole time.

The facts are never clear but the blame is easily cast.

Better get some science under your belts if you are going to tackle ebola. In these African nations facing the outbreak the docs have to confront charges of witchcraft and every 'healer' will cure you if you say the right chant and drink the right potion. As there is no cure it is largely luck and health status that determine the outcome. It is hard to watch the young die. They get blamed for every death and survivors may just credit the witch healer. It is no win but you can still give support. Encouraging  anything because it is 'natural' is dangerous. This isn't the common cold.

"...Trust the gov't.  Get the vaccine. But the locally available natural remedy?  Avoid that..."

I want to trust the government - I really do. But they're apparently trying to kill me:

US Department of Defense equipped largest Ebola treatment center in Sierra Leone

"...First, the DoD funded Ebola trials on healthy adults in January just before the Ebola outbreak occurred. Second, the DoD has links with a bioweapons laboratory in Kenema Hospital at the epicentre of the Ebola scourge. It is even possible that these Ebola trials took place there..."

SIERRA LEONE CLOSES US BIOWEAPONS LAB AT CENTRE OF EBOLA OUTBREAK, STOPS TULANE UNIVERSITY FROM EBOLA TESTING

"...The sensational announcement — posted on the health ministry’s facebook page — strongly suggests the notion that the diagnosis of Ebola using Tulane University kits at Kenema have been found to be false or faked.

The Kenema bioweapons lab is the only testing centre for ebola in Sierra Leona and holds the highest number of victims. Tulane University conducts bioweapons research on behalf of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID)...:

WHO to take charge of Kenema bioweapons lab after riots

"...The move comes after thousands marched on the lab following allegations by a former nurse that Ebola was being put into circulation deliberately.

The bioweapons lab — funded by George Soros and Bill Gates among others — has now been placed under police protection..."

This could not possibly get any wierder, right? Well, you would be wrong. Tekmira - the folks with the possible ebola vaccine - started Phase I human clinical trials of their vaccine. Four groups of subjects (cohorts) were given single, increasing doses of the vaccine to test for adverse effects. I guess contracting ebola would be considered an adverse effect, but I'm no ebola scientist. But what about the mysterious fifth cohort?

Emergency Update: US government behind Ebola outbreak? Evidence grows of false flag attack

...“Also odd is that according to the old ICON link they added a 5th cohort to the single-ascending dose part. Only 4 had been planned. I initially thought that maybe due to a good safety profile they wanted to test an even higher dose than the top dose originally planned…In retrospect, has this been an emergency cohort they wanted tested before sending over the supplies to Guinea,” writes a blogger on March 30th.

http://rnaitherapeutics.blogspot.gr/2014/03/as-ebola-spreads-fear-in-western-africa.html

It cannot be ruled out this “fifth cohort” were people infected in the US bioterrorism laboratory in Sierra Leone in order to start a pandemic..."

Not enough for you? WHO media officer Glen Thomas was on MH-17. Did he know too much?

There is a simple enough rememdy to stop the spread of Ebola to the wider world.

Ban all flights from Africa from entering your country.

Ban all citizens of Africa on any flight coming into your country if they had been in Africa the last month.

Anybody flying into Africa and particularly going to the disease ridden areas......you don't come back until the outbreak is over and a year has passed to make sure you are not a carrier.

Period....end of story.

Am I worried about this pandemic?  No.  My eyebrows are raised on this one, however, due to making it to a populated area.  Am I worried about some pandemic hitting?  Yes.  Any one specific bug coming out and becoming a pandemic is not highly probable, but all you need is for one bug to beat the odds.  It is the tail risk that gets you.  With nutrition declining in some parts of the world, we get a lot of bugs that will have improved odds of developing the required features to become a pandemic.   Maybe this is it, maybe not, but there's no point in panicing, becuase until you know what the situation is going to become, there's not much you can do.

Your points are valid but the problem lies in that most people are no longer trusting of their governments to tell them the truth. We are basically on our own here.

However as you say options are indeed limited.

Barring a vaccine that works or a cure that works, either of which must be widely avaliable, your options will be assuming the worst on how it is transmitted and taking steps to limit your exposure to the transmission mechanisms.  You'll have to minimize contact with other people and figure out how to protect yourself when you must come into contact with other people for the duration.  The aristocrats did something similar during the black death by simply retreating to country estates, though after it had run its course, they came out the other side not so aristocratic.

I don't have the ability to burn the world, though I do have the ability to shoot strangers from a long distance.  But that could very well become part of the isolation strategy.  I also know a little podunk town that isn't too unfriendly, has water and near by caves for shelter, and virtually nobody except for those who live there even knows that it exists.  There are no paved roads, and the main dirt road into it goes through, not over, a stream.

Nothing is truly nuke proof, but it is far enough away from nuke targets that it is a better chance than a lot of other options.  There are a lot of places to hide there.  You'll be driving along saying "this is some flat, shitty desert land," then the next thing you know, you're in a canyon with running water.

I'm with you on that Cog. Just pointing out in other comments the fact that symptoms are similar and that there are other virulant diseases like this one. I can assure you medical personnel are a bit concerned and that the repeated lies espoused by our dear leaders creates a bigger problem.

The other day I mentioned that I am not a prepper/anti-gov type (as seen on tv), with which another member here told me to go have self inflicted carnal knowledge. I can assure you that being reasonable ready would be more accurate, and I know how corrupt and full of shit our leadership is. I don't need the discovery /history/nat geo to guide me and know that shit is scripted anyway. I do not trust the MSM either.

IMHO, pandora's box has already been opened and we probably have a problem. Most of the good folks out there who are self sufficient and have minimal exposure to the urban environment may be more fortunate than others. Awareness and being ready (as best you can) is everything. Panic is a bad way to go but moving along with a purpose is helpful.

No more airborne than it already was, and in 9 months since the outbreak began there have only been 2,000 cases, and since ground zero was the suburbs outside a city the size of Orlando, it could be significantly worse.

Fair enough , so let's be generous to the unfortunate victims and call them 10,000 in number. But since they weren't all in Guekedou, and the outbreak didn't start to spread significantly until March let's say:

10,000 ebola cases over 4 months in:

Philadelphia/Conakry
Dallas/Freetown
San Jose/Monrovia
Orlando/Guekedou
Tallahassee/Kenema
West Palm Bech/Macenta
Des Moines/Labe

It's still ugly, particularly with the >50% mortality rate, but it could still be a lot worse. Then again I'm a charter member of Ebolics Anonymous, so I got a head start on my 12 steps...

Be aware that in the WHO podcast 2 weeks or so ago,  Margaret Chan (WHO Director) did mention that owing to the lack of effetive and reliable Public Health surveillance, combined with reluctance to contact "Authorities", there could be a 20x difference in the  real vs. reported cases / deaths.

Also be aware that whilst average incubation time is 2-4 days, there have been cases of asymptomatic incubation up to 21 days; presumably the "carrier" was infectious for a number of those days, and maybe his / her variant had adapted to the new host (us) by this strategy?

We'll see.

Makes you wonder why the west doesn't build a quick emergency hospital that is normally used for bio warefare over there he?

I mean, there's absolutly no reason to fly them over.
Also, why doesn't the west give the medicin to Africa?

The more I think about it, the more I reckon that the U.S., Germany and Spain repatriated their ill citizens because

1) they have learned that this strain is different or has mutated significantly from the original Ebola Zaire strain

2) they are interested in studying the evolution and behavior of the virus under their own controlled conditions

3) the spread of this strain has taken them by surprise and they need active infected cells to test for an anti-viral drug

I'm not a congress-critter, and most of my business these days is in West Africa. I could move the meeting to Accra, but fundamentally there a number of things to accomplish, so the question is- do I go sooner (as soon as the Eurotard vacation season ends) and get enough done so that I can comfortably stay away for at least four or five months, or do I try and postpone a trip as long as possible out of some (possibly irrational) hope that the situation will improve before the opportunity for procrastination closes. Either way, 21-day advance purchase discounts and non-refundable airfare are out the window- I'll take calculated risks, but I'm not suicidal.

Push it off...if it's airborne, there will be no need for the trip and you should know within a few weeks.

If not, then it will have run its course in a few months or you will have enough information to cancel it all together.

If this starts ripping thru Lagos than I'll get concerned. Since Lagos in theory should be the perfect breeding ground for a viral epedemic. Poverty, mid evil sanitation standards, equatorial heat, squalid slums, over crowded (probably more over crowded now with refugees coming in from the North). Epic corruption, fear of authority and stratified health care system that barely functions below the very rich.

BTW, Asians (SE and NE) have no great affection for blacks of any kind. Watch for the first African flight bans to start there. And than they'll start deporting all the Nigerians since they crowd out the local drug dealers.
