The Wonders Of The Modern World: China's Amazing Tower Of Garbage

Tyler Durden's picture

When it comes to ancient wonders of the world, there is the tower of Babel, and to a lesser extent, the leaning tower of Pisa. Sadly, modern wonders leave something to be desired: case in point, this 30 metres high garbage mountain at the crossroad of Huanghe avenue and Zhufeng street of Shijiazhuang, central China's Hebei province. The garbage mountain has been piled up as high as a 9-story Building in the last 30 years. The local village committee now is dealing with these wastes: best of luck. And to think all it took were several trillion in non-performing loans...

The Chinese are resourceful, and you can bet that this garbage, is truly garbage.

However, this is a city of 10+ million, and you can find a mountain of garbage in any 10+ million person city anywhere on this planet.

The advantage China has, is that if they truly wanted to get rid of this pile, they would do it, and they would do it fast.  Not like America where enviro-nazi's, policies, rules and permits would keep this shrine around for decades even after someone wanted to deal with it.

This won't necessarily apply to the city and suburban types but for us rural folk, garbage piles are a good thing for attracting predators like bear, wolf, wolverines, wild dogs and other after SHTF.

A tree stand over these sites will allow easy hunting for food and nutrition as the predators will come in for the feast. A few bears can last for months if prepared properly.

Just sayin. Use shit to your advantage and don't fret it. Garbage disposal and lack there of is conin to the USSA.

I still amamazed that no one has figured out how to fling garbage out into space. . All we have to do is get it far enough out there and it's not our problem anymore. Fuck it just dump it on the moon. Or simply send it towards the sun and it will be naturally incinerated. Maybe that's what the sun was always for. It not only provides light and life, but it's a giant dump.

Exactly! All those dumps will be the sites where civilizations of the future draw whatever "magical fluid" they use to run their economies. They will marvel at these pools, and make use of these highly concentrated accumulations to power their vehicles and machinery. They may occasionally wonder about the long-dead world that left all those deposits that decayed into their magic fluid, but other than that, it'll just be same-old, same-old.

One day you and all your hopes and dreams will be in the gas tanks of some highly developed species of rodent.

Those are teeney weeney garbage mountains compared to the 2 we have along the Turnpike in So FL.  The 1st is in the backyard of Coral Springs (Broward) aka Mt. Garbage - it wafts a wonderful odor throughout the newer developments at certain times of the day.  The 2d is in Palm Beach Cty and the Turnpike just south of the western section of Palm Beach Gardens.  Oh how delightful it must be to own a million dollar manse in one of those gated communities prized for their fake lakes and ridiculous CC fees when the wind from the dump wafts through your overpriced gated community.  Then again, it probably doesn't smell any different from the areas where the Northeastern transplants who inhabit these areas so they probably barely notice the putrid odor.

This is just a version of Monte Testaccio with a higher organic-matter content.

Leave it a while and you will be able to build on it; put the right types of fungus spores on it and you'll be able to grow vegetables on it in a month and a half.

If you follow the Belt Parkway from Brooklyn to Queens, you will see strange, incongruent "hills" in what used to be salt marshes. it is NYC's garbage. They covered them with dirt and built on top of a lot of them. Why are there no articles about this? America was as dirty and polluted as china when we went our "industrial" phase. Now we don't make anything, so that is not a problem any more.

I play golf at a reclaimed dump once in a while in Palm Beach county. Occasional methane smell but generally it's windy so usually not.

Another option is to encapsulate it and collect the methane released.

Curiously, none of them wants to go back to PRC, ever.

Go figure.

Nothing is sustainable; the sun is burning out, the cosmos are drifting away, etc. "Sustainability" is a pipe dream of the weak that runs counter to everything great about life (risk, growth, change, learning, competition, evolution, passions, emotions, war, mystery, etc).

Sustainability means planning our future in a way that we do not set ourselves up to crash and burn at some future date. Long-term planning has not been something politicians excel at or are even good at. Our system is geared at getting politicians reelected and fulfilling the most pressing needs of today.

Things like profit, greed, and quenching our unrelinquishing desire for growth are placed in front of longer term issues and needs. Mapping out a logical and sustainable long-term plan requires delving into some rather hefty philosophical questions like what brings real happiness. More on this important topic in the article below.

'Sustainability' is liberal PC psycho-babble. It's adherents are no more knowledgeable or effectual than a bum on the streets.

Disruptive technological advances combined with geopolitical calculations completly mitigate any efforts toward your sustainable utopia.

TPTB will maintain the status quo even if they have to nuke the world to do it.

For most of his time on earth man has been a minor consumer of the earth’s stores of energy. With the discovery of fire man began to increase his demands and draw on the short-term energy stores that had been accumulated over scores of years or even centuries by woody plants.

In the last hundred years with the invention of the internal combustion engine and a huge increase in population man has begun to tap the planets long-term energy supplies of oil and natural gas at an alarming rate. We have shaped a world where our lifestyles revolve around and are dependent on oil and the consumption of energy from fossil fuels. More on how we impact our environment in the article below.
