Looking For The Spark Of World War 3? Start Here

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by James H Kunstler of Kunstler.com,

Any American influence left in Iraq should focus on rebuilding the credibility of national institutions.

– Editorial, The New York Times

Gosh, isn’t that what we spent eight years, 4,500 lives, and $1.7 trillion doing? And how did that work out? The Iraq war is just like the US financial system. The people in charge can’t imagine writing off their losses. Which, from the policy standpoint, leaves the USA pounding sand down so many rat holes that there may be no ground left to stand on anywhere. We’ll be lucky if our national life doesn’t soon resemble The Revenge of the Mole People.

The arc of this story points to at least one likely conclusion: the dreadful day that ISIS (shorthand for whatever they call themselves) overruns the US Green Zone in Baghdad. Won’t that be a nauseating spectacle? Perhaps just in time for the 2014 US elections. And what do you suppose the policy meeting will be like in the White House war room the day after?

Will anyone argue that the USA just take a break from further operations in the entire Middle East / North Africa region? My recommendation would be to stand back, do nothing, and see what happens — since everything we’ve done so far just leaves things and lives shattered. Let’s even say that ISIS ends up consolidating power in Iraq, Syria, and some other places. The whole region will get a very colorful demonstration of what it is like to live under an 11th century style psychopathic despotism, and then the people left after the orgy of beheading and crucifixion can decide if they like it. The experience might be clarifying.

In any case, what we’re witnessing in the Middle East — apparently unbeknownst to the newspapers and the cable news orgs — is what happens in extreme population overshoot: chaos, murder, economic collapse. The human population in this desolate corner of the world has expanded on the artificial nutriment of oil profits, which have allowed governments to keep feeding their people, and maintaining an artificial middle class to work in meaningless bureaucratic offices where, at best, they do nothing and, at worst, hassle their fellow citizens for bribes and payoffs.

There is not a nation on earth that is preparing intelligently for the end of oil — and by that I mean 1) the end of cheap, affordable oil, and 2) the permanent destabilization of existing oil supply lines. Both of these conditions should be visible now in the evolving geopolitical dynamic, but nobody is paying attention, for instance, in the hubbub over Ukraine. That feckless, unfortunate, and tragic would-be nation, prompted by EU and US puppeteers, just replied to the latest trade sanction salvo from Russia by declaring it would block the delivery of Russian gas to Europe through pipelines on its territory. I hope everybody west of Dnepropetrovsk is getting ready to burn the furniture come November. But that just shows how completely irrational the situation has become… and I stray from my point.

Which is that in the worst case that ISIS succeeds in establishing a sprawling caliphate, they will never be able to govern it successfully, only preside over an awesome episode of bloodletting and social collapse. This is especially true in what is now called Saudi Arabia, with its sclerotic ruling elite clinging to power. If and when the ISIS maniacs come rolling in on a cavalcade of You-Tube beheading videos, what are the chances that the technicians running the oil infrastructure there will stick around on the job? And could ISIS run all that machinery themselves? I wouldn’t count on it. And I wouldn’t count on global oil supply lines continuing to function in the way the world requires them to. If you’re looking for the near-future spark of World War Three, start there.

By the way, the US is no less idiotic than Ukraine. We’ve sold ourselves the story that shale oil will insulate us from all the woes and conflicts breaking out elsewhere in the world over the dissolving oil economy paradigm. The shale oil story is false. By my reckoning we have about a year left of the drive-to-Walmart-economy before the public broadly gets what trouble we’re in. The amazing thing is that the public might get to that realization even before its political leadership does. That dynamic leads straight to the previously unthinkable (not for 150 years, anyway) breakup of the United States.

Well then, I guess we're arrived about here:

My life fades, my vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land. Most of all, I remember the man we called Max, the road warrior. To understand who he was we have to go back to the other time. When the world was powered by the black fuel, and the desert sprung great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now, swept away. For reasons long forgotten two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. Suddenly their machines sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked, but nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. Cities exploded. A whirlwind of looting and a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men.

On the roads it was a white-line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, waging war for a tank of juice. Good brave men were battered and smashed. Men like Max, who ruled the highways in the name of the law. Who became a lover, husband, father. And with the roar of an engine, he lost everything, his woman, his child, his world. He wandered out into the wasteland, and here he would learn, amid the dark wreckage, that the fire which burns in the heart of man, will endure.

Don't quote me on that.  I did it from memory.  (No, not really.)

It turns out them fucking me over and stealing my house was the best thing that could have happened.time to prepare and am I I just left my wife cause she refuses to listen about how things in this world are and wont tell her miserable son NO. These kids are a tragedy in themselves. So whether it be a crash tomorrow or 10 years from now the Y generation is gonna try to kill all who have anything cause they have been taught that my generation and later are greedy and selfish and they will just steal instead of work . No ethics no morals no hope. So who cares about shit head ISIS our kids will be the death of this nation. You heard it here first and if you don't believe just have a talk with your teenager on how they think. You'll be scared and shocked what they have been taught. I wish I had an answer other that no run but when your spouse is asleep and wont listen and your step kid is on psychotropics as most now are i was facing an Adam Lansing and nobody would here my cries for this kid.

I won't argue that my generation (I'm 29) isn't populated by a lot of useless people, but saying those of us aware enough to think the entitlement programs you guys voted yourselves are greedy and selfish are wrong and somehow immoral because of it is pretty selfish itself. And that's not what kids are taught. Kids are taught that these glorious old fart entitlement programs will be there forever as long as we keep paying ever increasing taxes like good little serfs. Does that mean I'm going to try to steal all your stuff because I feel entitled to it? No. But my generation is going to have to work our whole lives to find your retirement entitlements until the whole system collapses. Even if nothing bad happens to disrupt the status quo, and no one on here feels that's likely, those entitlements would STILL bankrupt us. If you were awake and aware as you claim, you would know that. Forcing us to participate in obvious Ponzi scheme is flat out wrong. Just because you were forced into it doesn't justify us being forced to pay for it.

From the CDC web page updated on August 7. It says Ebola may be transmitted via "casual contact" with infected individuals. In the footnote "casual contact is defined as:
1 Casual contact is defined as a) being within approximately 3 feet (1 meter) or within the room or care area for a prolonged period of time (e.g., healthcare personnel, household members) while not wearing recommended personal protective equipment (i.e., droplet and contact precautions–see Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations); or b) having direct brief contact (e.g., shaking hands) with an EVD case while not wearing recommended personal protective equipment (i.e., droplet and contact precautions–see Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations). At this time, brief interactions, such as walking by a person or moving through a hospital, do not constitute casual contact.

What they are saying here is that Ebola is airborne. Previously they said it could only be transmitted via direct contact with body fluids of infected people. This is a big and very unsettling change. But on the bright side, should you survice the new plague, you want have as many people to support with you taxes... on the not so bright side, there will be fewer tax payers too. We'll see how it balances out.

Social Security is one of the biggies, and that was created in the 1930's. Then the Nixon govt decided to use it to balance the budget - a violation of law.

It's funny how we, the little people,  always blame other little people, never the .gov, never the corps.

Oh I know the govt get a huge share of the blame. But the people who elected this govt and went along with these programs are not blameless. What you just said is the classic defense used by people trying to defend indefensible programs like social security. If you really felt that way, you wouldn't expect unborn generations to pay for the retirement benefits of the boomer generation with programs that won't be around for them. I sure as shit don't want my children or grandchildren forced to pay for mine.

Consider these quotes:

We were being lied to from cradle to grave by family, religion, government, technology, business, and media. If we could only stop this rot” -- George Harrison

“Deception, machination and mendacity lie at the core of human intelligence, like worms coiled at the core of a apple” -- Mark Rowlands

Tue, 08/12/2014 - 07:28 | 5080983 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

actually, the lies begin with... Santa Claus. Now, if you find out that your parents lied to you about Santa Claus, wouldn't that be the wonderful start in a journey of understanding double standards? Like "you are not supposed to tell this to grandpa, even though it's true"?

One of the hardest lessons in childhood, that truth is very relative and seldom understood or welcomed?

Seriously, this (often Anglo-American) obsession with "he lied! he lied!" is sometimes a bit hard to bear

Politicians don't get elected by saying the whole truth. Even dictators can't hold power and say the whole truth. Advertisers can't tell the whole truth. Your parents were not willing to tell you the whole truth, and pray that your spouse and children won't tell you the whole truth

Why can't people at least grow up enough to judge them according to what they do, instead of what they say?

Take the lies that brought us to Iraq, for example. Telling the lies is one thing, starting a war based on them the real crime. And... renaming French Fries to Freedom Fries in the US Congress Cafeteria because France was calling out the lies...

Not sure about the whole article but, I will say this:

I do believe that if we're not careful, This ISIS does have the possibility to re-map the ME.... if that begins to happen and for whatever reason oil goes up... way up... the economy will implode and war will follow.... it always does.

This administration will watch while the whole thing shapes up and do nothing until it's too late to avoid.

The US does mostly the bidding of the Saudis...  The Saudis are against The Shias which are in Syria and Iran, Iraq...  They're also against ISIS since they're a threat to the Saudi government too.... Israel may pivot to Iran after Hammas, Hesbolla (sp?)... ISIS taking advantage where they can as they pick up money, warriors and strength....   If or when they're strong enough... or Saudi and allies are strong enough, if our oil goes past 140/barrel because someone takes over enough oil fields and is not friendly to us that the markets get spooked... it's game over....  Obama will read about it in the news.

A clear and dispassionate look at the history of the Jews in the last thousand years will reveal a pattern of behaviour that has not changed (no collective free will) . Their group survival strategy of parasitism works and the collective weakness of the Europeans enables it to be so.

You know, it is almost comical, if it wasnt so sick, to see all the Jews bashing and Jewish conspiracy talk here.  What you all fail to grasp is that it makes you look stupid.  Jews are a tiny fraction of the US and Europe, right?  But the Goyim just arent smart enough to collectively stop them? Arent smart enough to learn a lesson 1000's of years old? Just not smart enough to keep the banking and finance in WASP hands?  I would be embarassed to call myself a goy and bitch about the Jew.

And historically, it was the church, who forced the Jews into banking since it was not a "church-like occupation".  Fact.  And Jews were prevented....PREVENTED....from traditional occupations and various trade guilds.  So, yeah, your ancestors set up the Jewish people to work out a survival strategy. Stupid goyim!

Most of the bashing I see is against the Tribe. Lots of people rightfully bash the Mafia too. They're also killers and thieves. One only needs to understand the real history of Palestine to confirm this.

Does any other tribe find the need to have all powerful terrorist organizations like the ADL and Mossad? Do the Muslims have an equivalent to the ADL or Mossad?

Bah, that pisses me off about Chomsky.  Just read his book, "Necessary Illusions" and it was an absolute disassembling of the US propaganda system where-by the most egregious crimes were covered up mostly by not talking about them in the media and providing simple (but repetitive) stories to distract the public.  9/11 is precisely the type of operation Necessary Illusions discusses.

Reading his book however, I was thinking about how he was able to publish and to what extent he was a honey pot and a distraction himself.  Now I guess I know.  Perhaps he was told to get on board with 9/11 or all of his family would end up comitting suicide in a hot tub...

ISIS is a massive geopolitical danger to all of civilization. It is worse than you think.

The Caliphate can import the oil techs it needs from China or Russia. That is not a problem for them. And caliphates existed before oil, and do not need oil to be successful. If they cannot produce the food they need, they can change their business model to straight up nuclear extortion. Forcing richer countries to pay tribute is a tried and true business model. And they can simply conquer more territory. I expect the IS Caliphate to eventually take most of Eurasia, and quite possibly the whole planet. If the USA collapses as you suggest, it is almost certain they will take the whole planet.

I found this interview with a (well spoken) jihadi to be interesting:

http://www.syrianews.cc/isis-the-bombshell-interview-to-impeach-obama/

He goes over the history of US involvement with Al Queda and a plan called  operation Clean Break which was to use agents to keep the Sunni and Shia fighting each other.

The guy also goes into detail about Takfir. This is a muslim who accuses another muslim of being a non-believer. Apparently ISIS uses this as a major strategy and justifies it's killing based upon this. Supposedly death can only be decreed by certain judges but ISIS has given itself that power. He says they use the terror strategies of Genghis Kahn.

You can see, even if his information is wrong, how unlikely it is that muslims could unite. They use this 'holier than thou' ideal and fight like Catholics and Protestants did in the 1600s. Sounds like they are a few hundred years away from finding resolution .It must be a hard road though because if you are a good muslim you are religiously bound to kill kaffiri (those who don't have or have given up the faith. Bummer cuz that will take up most of you day.

Is it the Americans and their foreign policy that we should be concerned about or is it religion that is at the root of all of it?  Fundamentalists wallowin in decrying THIS world in favour of the NEXT world.  So if a whole religion and the millions of folks who follow it feel that this world is nothing but a "shithole", full of "evil", and "sin", and "blasphemy", and that the only hope of personal salvation is to fight this evil, which takes the form of "the infidel" or whatever catchy 5th century term you wish to use, then how do you get folks to begin to appreciate THIS earth, THIS life, and sanctify it as it stands?  As long as this is a place that needs destroying before the gates of heaven reveal themselves, those whose total lack of personal responsibility - those who have abandoned (if they ever possessed it in the first place) critical thought, decency, and human rights in favour of their brand of radicalism and who are in possession of weapons and able to foment destruction without challenge -  will ensure that there will be no hope for peace.  Instead we have fifth century ideology pointing 21st century weapons everywhere with the promise of "Paradise" as their clarion.  There is no greater danger than ignorance coupled with military power.

Of course, as Nietzsche said; "Whoever battles with monsters had better see that it does not turn him into a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

This is true. Obama's greatest failure - apart from all his other failures - is not even to have attempted to fulfil his first election promise "to get America off oil". The whole Western world political elites are living in denial.

Around 10 years ago I'm on record suggesting that the US should lead a global R&D programme to develop new, clean, green energies to replace oil. I had in mind a 10 year crash programme along the lines of "get a man on the moon in 10 years" back in its day. The world's best brains could have been brought together to achieve this.

Sooner or later something like this will have to be implemented or global society will collapse.

The great benefit of such a programme is that it would not only solve the global energy crises but also get the nanny-state eco-lefties to STFU and go find some other cause to bellyache about.

Sadly, instead of that, we see "oil wars" breaking out all over the world. Exactly as predicted by a few well known authors. Little energy R&D going on, so mankind is sleep-walking back to the pre-industrial age.

WW3?? I think it is a serious possibility based upon what I see happening. Worse, I believe there are numerous powerful factions in Western countries who actually want it and are pulling the levers in the shadows. Presumably, they don't want it to go nuclear, but will they lose control?

"End of oil"?  You need to read "The Deep Hot Biosphere - The Myth of Fossil Fuels" by geologist Thomas Gold. He asserts that, far from springing from one-time deposits of organic material millions of years ago, that petroleum is constantly being manufactured within the earth's mantle. He adduces an impressive list of empirical observations from his career as proofs.

one post to ridicule, one post to insult,

you'd be a shill or a sockpuppet you wouldn't do better.

or is it that the abiotic theory make you really angry  ? if that's so i wonder why

i have to add that i have no idea how you could write what you wrote while calling people stupid unless obviously it is disinfo tactic; like if they were pumping the oil at the seep rather than the source.

so i restate :

there is no multiple layers of fossile sources on top of each other that they didn't see.

when the source is empty, the source is empty, there is no magical refilling of the source... unless it is abiotic & come from the core of the planet.

Abiotic oil production has been investigated and debunked.

Move on the Bigfoot sightings.  As least there is some money to be made with that hoax
