If You Like Your "Boots On The Ground", Here's More - Obama Plans To Send 75 More 'Advisers' To Iraq

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite reassurances that there will be "no US combat troops in Iraq again" on Friday, it appears - thanks to nuance of spin - that President Obama has changed his mind...

  • *OBAMA SAID TO CONSIDER SENDING ABOUT 75 MILITARY ADVISERS TO IRAQ: CNN

The question we have is - when does a "military adviser" stop being an 'assassination consultant' and start being a troops' boot on the ground?

As CNN reports,

The Obama administration is considering whether to send more military advisers to Iraq amid efforts to get thousands of Yazidi Iraqis off Mount Sinjar, a U.S. official said Tuesday. The administration also is looking to boost the capabilities of Kurdish forces battling ISIS fighters in northern Iraq, the official said.

Consideration is being given to sending as many as 75 more American military personnel, a second U.S. military official told CNN.

the funny part is, this ISIS thing could have been avoided if:

1) the West didn't activley participate in creating, arming an training them. But we needed them to topple Assad.

2) the West would have bombed them on the way in as they crossed the desert. But no, with Maliki in, they didn't step in until the Kurdish area was possibly in trouble.

At this point I would support any efforts to actually eradicate ISIS ( the US armed forces fighting the CIA ) to preserve the integrity of Iraq. We know that this won't happen though.

That's because even with how much you hate the current system, even with you knowing that it corrupt to its very core, you will not be happy when it goes down.  The system is so interdependent that it cannot collapse without significant pain to everyone.  You may be willing to suffer through the pain.  I am.  It is inevitable, and I'd rather just get it over with.  But think about your average Kardashian-Ass watcher, who doesn't know how corrupt it is, who doesn't hate the system, who cannot wrap their mind around the inevitably of what we are facing.  If you won't be happy, how are they going to feel about a severe change in lifestyle?  They're going to go along with the system.  They are going to unwittingly support it.  They are going to carry it on until it cannot be supported any longer.  Everything is falling into shit and the world is burning around us, yet there the system stands.  That is resilience.  Until it's not.

Actually the SF guys are considered advisors by the military, as that is their primary role. They go to foreign countries and advise them on how to deal with dissidents. Anything else they do is merely in support of their primary role, the training and advisement of foreign "friendly" forces.

Quus Ant's picture

True.  I still don't believe the neocons would telegraph exactly what they are doing- sending 75 SF advisors.

That's the cover for con-gress, but it's funny, and a little sweet and nastolgic, that they still think such pageantry is necessary.

Tue, 08/12/2014 - 11:55 | 5082107 Urban Redneck
Urban Redneck's picture

It's too confusing... advisers are one subset of SF, but not all military advisers are Special Forces or even part of the military. Then there's the intelligence community, which has its own military advisors, who may or may not be wearing the same footwear as the military guys. Finally, there are the private sector military advisors, and while most of the grunts are Blackwater (or equivalent), among the POG's there are often some whiteshoes, and those are the guys you really need to watch out for...

Barry left out the words "at least" when he said he was sending 75 advisers.

medium g,

why not?

US troops should not be sent to kill foreigners,
who are mostly peasants and farmers, men, women, or children,
living in some of the most impoverished countries of the world,
killed basically for resisting US invasion, or for being "collateral" civilians.

They are typically victims of US-supported financial tycoons, despots, sheikdoms, drug lords, and apartheid colonizers.
They pose no threat to real US interests.

Their only "threat" exists in the fearful imaginings of highly improbable and hypothetical future scenarios. Those scenarios are only given any chance of realization from the blowback effects of military attempts to preclude them.

And that is to say nothing of the very real and present adverse domestic effects of policies subservient to the demeaning goals of military and financial domination.

Yes it always starts like this, but maybe this time we can keep a lid on it.  If we're going to up-arm the Kurds they need supervision.  I doubt we can arm and train the Kurds in sufficient time.  The only way this is going to work is with 20,000 US "boots on the ground" (plus another 20,000 loafers on the ground of the associated contractors), running air bases inside Kurdistan.  Will Obama do it?  Tough question.  Will Valerie Jarrett let him?

In 1944 Poland, a Jewish shop keeper named Jakob is summoned to ghetto headquarters after being caught out near curfew. While waiting for the German Kommondant, Jakob overhears a German radio broadcast about Russian troop movements. Returned to the ghetto, the shopkeeper shares his information with a friend and then rumors fly that there is a secret radio within the ghetto. Jakob uses the chance to spread hope throughout the ghetto by continuing to tell favorable tales of information from "his secret radio." Jakob, however, has a real secret in that he is hiding a young Jewish girl who escaped from a camp transport train. A rather uplifting and slightly humorous film about World War II Jewish Ghetto life.

75 consultants to operate 5000 drones - only 50 in the air at a time though

They may be there to try out the new 'single-use' drones.  The ones with heat & shape ID chips and 1 each .44 hollow point round.  They swarm out of a tractor trailer and don't stop until they get a target down.  100,000/trailer.  Voila!  Done and done.

Does "boots on the ground" mean armed forces only, or does it include paid mercenaries?

Surely the media will ask him soon...

These will end up being 'boots in the ground', and O'BOLA and his corporate patrons know it.

This is a war of Reformation.  When values are reformed, you nip the bad and bolster the good.  I expect we will all get behind the Kurds.  That will cause problems for the Turks, but they don't matter anymore.  No one trusts them.  Expect Turkey to break up in 5 years.

The Iraq situation is lost! The green zone is on borrowed time and 100 or 300 advisers won't make any difference. The only chance of riding the ISIS out of Iraq, Syria, is with an occupational force again. Will that happen at the same time as EU member states funding and supplying al-nursha at Syria's northern boarder, not likely.

"Good Morning Vietnam!" God Bless Robin Williams (RIP).

What is it about Democratic Presidents and Military Advisors? Get on with it -- or get off it. Know what you want to do -- or forget about it. Iraq needs both a Military and Political endgame. Half-assed is half-assed.

Not one more American needs to die to implement the failed policies of incompetent and timid leadership.

Gee, if only that 'stoopid' W had called the soldiers 'advisers', then the press would have accepted that and would never have given him a hard time.

Question for the press:  How many advisers do there have to be before they become boots on the ground?  I'm sure you will be pressing for the answer from Teflon Barry.

What were those guys called in the early days of Viet Nam?  Oh yeah... advisors.

This gets the coveted Colon Powell award for jive-ass bullshit, with jive-ass clusters.

Obola said the other day that "Iraq has no US military solution."

Oh yeah? Well tell that to the 50,000 Americans who have come back from Bushbama's banker wars with traumatic life-altering injuries.

The question we have is - when does a "military adviser" stop being an 'assassination consultant' and start being a troops' boot on the ground?

Consult the history books on Vietnam, then consider the debt issues that we have, and you can arrive at some possibilities.

It's a tough job identifying who to target when all you see is a bunch of turban-heads riding around in a pickup truck waving AK-47's. Are they ISIS, Kurd, Sunni volunteer, Shiite volunteer, Iraqi army, Maliki security forces, CIA undercover troops, Mercs, etc).

Why the reluctance to bomb ISIS, who, by their own account, are killing and cutting the heads off of people, including children? I never thought I would see the day when an American president would just walk away from something like this.

You have to marvel at the Newspeak. What on dear earth is a "military adviser"?

BTW, "boots on the ground" sounds ridiculous, like some cool catchphrase straight out of a Hollywood teen movie.
