Ferguson: "War Zone Or US City?"... The Morning After
Ferguson suffered its 5th night of unrest; as we feared during the day yesterday, when night fell in Ferguson, a combination of massive SWAT team presence and an increasingly disillusioned citizenry were a recipe for disaster. Over 70 heavily-armed police enforced quasi-martial-law in the troubled town, at least 10 people were arrested, tear gas and rubber bullets were unleashed, and 2 reporters were (briefly) arrested. Perhaps Rep. Justin Amash summed it up best, "Is this a war zone or a US city? Gov't escalates tensions w/military equipment & tactics."
"I've had enough of being pushed around because of the color of my skin. I'm sick of this police brutality," said one protester, who gave only his first name, Terrell, 18. "I'm going to keep coming back here night after night until we get justice."

Police in Ferguson, Missouri, fired tear gas, stun grenades and smoke bombs to disperse some 350 protesters late Wednesday, the fourth night of racially charged demonstrations after police shot to death an unarmed black teen.
Some demonstrators hurled rocks at police as others scattered, while smoke engulfed the area. A Reuters reporter saw two young men preparing what looked like petrol bombs in a bus-stop shelter, their faces covered by bandanas. Police said protesters had thrown petrol bombs at officers.
Protesters have gathered every night since Saturday when 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot to death in the mostly black suburb of St. Louis, during what authorities said was a struggle over a gun in a police car. Some witnesses say he was outside the car with his hands up.
Police have deployed camouflage-clad officers in body armor, including one manning a rifle on a tripod atop an armored car, to Ferguson.

A St. Louis alderman, Antonio French [who has become a Twitter celebrity with his Vines], was among some 10 people arrested on Wednesday evening, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper reported. About 40 protesters have been arrested since Saturday.
But the Police say they are trying to help...
Police Chief Thomas Jackson told reporters his priority was improving race relations in Ferguson, which has seen a stark demographic shift in recent decades, going from mostly white to mostly black. About two-thirds of the town's 21,000-strong population are black. On a police force of 53, three officers are black.
"This is an opportunity to fix what's wrong," he said.

National figures from President Barack Obama to civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton have called for a peaceful response to the shooting.
Obama, who is vacationing on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, was briefed on Wednesday night about events in Ferguson by senior advisor Valerie Jarrett and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, the White House said.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said in a series of Twitter messages he would visit the area on Thursday, and urged "law enforcement to respect rights of residents (and) press" with the hopes that the "ongoing crisis" does not compound Saturday's "tragedy."
"Situation in Ferguson does not represent who we are. Must keep the peace, while safeguarding rights of citizens and the press," Nixon wrote.

As the economy falls apart and people become even more angry and even more frustrated, there will be a lot more incidents of civil unrest like we have just witnessed in Ferguson. And in response, the federal government and our overly militarized police will seek to crush those uprisings with overwhelming force. ...
when police get all of this equipment, it is inevitable that they are going to use it. One result of this has been the astounding increase in the number of SWAT team raids in America. The following numbers come from my previous article entitled “10 Facts About The SWATification Of America That Everyone Should Know“…
#1 In 1980, there were approximately 3,000 SWAT raids in the United States. Now, there are more than 80,000 SWAT raids per year in this country.
#2 79 percent of the time, SWAT teams are deployed to private homes.
#3 50 percent of the victims of SWAT raids are either black or Latino.
#4 In 65 percent of SWAT deployments, “a battering ram, boot, or some sort of explosive device” is used to gain forced entry to a home.
#5 62 percent of all SWAT raids involve a search for drugs.
#6 In at least 36 percent of all SWAT raids, “no contraband of any kind” is found by the police.
#7 In cases where it is suspected that there is a weapon in the home, police only find a weapon 35 percent of the time.
#8 More than 100 American families have their homes raided by SWAT teams every single day.
#9 Only 7 percent of all SWAT deployments are for “hostage, barricade or active-shooter scenarios”.
#10 Even small towns are getting SWAT teams now. 30 years ago, only 25.6 percent of communities with populations between 25,000 and 50,000 people had a SWAT team. Now, that number has increased to 80 percent.
And of course African-American communities receive a greatly disproportionate amount of attention from our militarized police. Just imagine how you would feel if every time you saw a police officer you cringed in fear because you might be about to get searched again. Ultimately, these stop-and-frisk operations amount to much more than humiliating, demeaning rituals for young men of color, who must raise their arms and spread their legs, always careful not to make a sudden move or gesture that could provide an excuse for brutal - even lethal - force.
Like the days when black men were expected to step off the sidewalk and cast their eyes downward when a white woman passed, young black men know the drill when they see the police crossing the street toward them; it is a ritual of dominance and submission played out hundreds of thousands of times each year.
So what can we do about this?
How can we change the system?
How can we reverse this alarming militarization of our police?
Unfortunately, our system has become so corrupt that there is very little that we can do. In fact, one newly released study discovered that average Americans have a “near-zero” statistical impact on public policy…
A startling new political science study concludes that corporate interests and mega wealthy individuals control U.S. policy to such a degree that “the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.”
The startling study, titled “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens,” is slated to appear in an upcoming issue of Perspectives on Politics and was authored by Princeton University Professor Martin Gilens and Northwestern University Professor Benjamin Page. An early draft can be found here.
Noted American University Historian Allan J. Lichtman, who highlighted the piece in a Tuesday article published in The Hill, calls Gilens and Page’s research “shattering” and says their scholarship “should be a loud wake-up call to the vast majority of Americans who are bypassed by their government.”

And whoever was responsible for destroying businesses, it in no way invalidates or diminishes the legitimate grievances of the people in Ferguson or their right to demonstrate for it and protest their treatment. If memory serves, nypd choked a black man to death the other week - no one gave a shit, no businesses were destroyed.
Recall the entire reason this protest began was the police killed an unarmed kid and then gave an absurd story about how he tried to assault the officer (kid was heading to college next week). If this was someone in my community the local kids would have destroyed a lot more infrastructure.
When an outrageous act (especially on indicative of a pattern of abuse) instigates additional outrageous conduct, that does not excuse the original outrageous act. By all accounts, the majority of Ferguson residents are not looting and burning. I'd be surprised if the shit disturbers account for more than 0.05% of the population.

I watched the live stream last night with Infowars.com reporters, Sgt. Joe Biggs and Jakari Jackson. For nearly the entire time the crowd was together, far back from the police war machines, and they were only yelling shit and cussing sometimes at the cops or flipping them off.
It was that way for a long time even though the cops kept commanding them to stay back...but the people weren't advancing at all towards the police blockade.
But eventually, as I suspected would happen, the crowd started arguing with themselves over some B.S. about Sharpton and obama, etc. and then from what Sgt. Biggs reported, somebody threw a glass bottle at one of the police tanks.
The police immediately began firing tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bombs at the crowd at that point and demand they dispearse or be arrested.
Here were dozens and dozens of armor-plated cops with tanks and machine guns against what seemed to be a totally unarmed crowd which threw one bottle at them and the cops went crazy.
What kind of pussy cops fires indiscriminently into crowds of people as well as directly at reporters due to one stupid bottle? That is not showing the kind of restraint and attitude the cops are supposed to demonstrate in a situation like that in front of a pretty well self-controlled crowd.
And since when are the cops allowed to fire at unarmed reporters who are only there to record the news??? Sgt. Biggs was shot at multiple times and was hit in the body by a rubber bullet that made him bleed. They also directly fired tear gas at his head and flash-bombed him and other reporters.
What the fuck is that all about? The reports this morning from the scene are that the reporters were directly targeted by these cops, 2 were arrested for no reason, and the cops were trying to confiscate their recorders and break their gear.
Of course there no way to tell which cops were firing on innocent people and especially at reporters who are supposed to be protected by the cops as well as protected under 1st Amendment freedom of speech.
Firing indiscriminently into crowds of people for no reason does not exactly help give any credibility to the police who claim they were justified in shooting down that guy with 8 shots from far away, does it??? They pretty much proved last nigth that they're trigger-happy pussies who can't handle a single bottle thrown into the street in front of them.
I won't justify anything the people of that town did to riot, loot, burn, and assault others. Those are scumbags show should be arrested for their crimes. Doing those things also doesn't give them any credibility just as what the cops did lacks credibility. Both sides are now breaking the law.
But after the fact...what went on last night was not rioting or looting the whole time I watched and it was only until one bottle was thrown did it get out of hand. Then the police went crazy and the crowd went crazy too and it all escalated out of control once again.
And nothing justifies any police anywhere in America shooting at unarmed reporters and targeting them in order to destroy their recording equipment which only shows that the cops are out to cover their asses after they deliberately broke the law.
The police state in full force and proof of total militarization of America's police forces in order to fight against the American public.
I hope the psycho cops who get off on shooting at unarmed, innocent people realize what they're getting themselves into. Cops have to sleep sometimes....cops live in the same communities for the most part of the people they will be victimizing, and cops have families to protect. They can't get away for long with abusing the public and expecting to live peacefully amongst them at the same time. The people outnumber the cops in most places 100 and 1000 to 1 or more.
This is only going to continue to get worse all across America...and it will end badly for America as well. I see no stopping this trend. It only seems to be speeding up exponentially year after year since obama took over just like all the other attrocities that have and still are occuring under the treasonous obama regime.

IMHO there are two competing issues here - the righteousness of utilizing our Constitutionally granted freedoms - and being arrested, gravely injured or killed.
Personally, my widow is not going to get much solace out of the fact that I was "in the right" when I'm dead on the sidewalk after getting shot in the head by a gas grenade.

The American revolution essentially allowed the aristocracy in America to confiscate the property of the aristocracy from England and redistribute it to their own ends. cougar_w, I think what he meant was an opposition between the concepts of rioting - looting shops, having a brawl with police for the heck of it, getting blind drunk and smashing cars windshields - and an politically-motivated organized upheaval. Granted, the first version could theoretically turn into the second, but I don't think there is any historical example of that. Ferguson might prove history wrong, who knows? But, in the recent past, we've had riots in Europe - in London, in Stockholm, in Paris. None of them developed into a full-blown revolution. In my opinion, these riots, including Ferguson, are just a symptom of hopelessness. People don't hope anymore, and where there's no hope, situations can get ugly.
For a revolution, you need hope, charismatic leaders and organizing.
You only know it was a revolution in hind-sight.
And it only remains a revolution if the tyrannts of old are prevented from writing the history books.

I would differentiate between "Black vs. White" and "Police vs. the people".
In the first case, first of all it is an incorrect generalization, in that not all Black people are like the stereotype people like to hammer on. Secondly, none of us gets to choose the color of our skin. To discriminate based on race is simpleminded and shallow.
In the second case, however, while I see your point and I agree to some extent, my agreement is more cautious. Because "police" is a decision. What's more, the individuals on the lines of those confrontations are absolutely deciding to be there. I don't buy the whole "just doing their job" excuse. I agree that the oligarchs at the top are setting the tune, but these cops are willingly playing along, and they cannot be excused from the decisions they are making on a personal level.

Not to be an apologist for police but riot squads are formed from the larger patrol bureau of a police department at the direction of the chief/sheriff/commissioner. You don't volunteer to be on a riot squad, you are ordered to report to one.

The cops could preempt this with issuing some stats on their officers, such as detentions/arrests, arrests/convictions, parking tickets/month, traffic tickets/month, # civilian complaints against, # penalties from civilian complaints.
Individual cop tracking is an excellent idea. In most departments, 5 negative reports filed by citizens puts the officer in question on suspension, pending further review.
Some years back, at the Chief of Police' suggestion, several of us got together and managed to file many individual reports against an unqualified loose canon the Chief had been forced to hire through an affirmative action mandate of the City Council

They just haven't tripped over any of the hot buttons of the middle-class white people because -- the middle-class is very careful not to have any hot buttons. We white people just shrug and move on when something evil happens, or maybe we cook up some dire conspiracy about how it's a remote evil we cannot contend with. It's not remote at all, it's the local politicians lining their pockets, and the local cops backing them up. We're always looking over and beyond them as if expecting the approach of some bogie man over the hill, well sure they like it that way. In the meantime, we very carefully avoid having anything we are willing to fight for.
The people in Ferguson are fighting. They don't know they are fighting something bigger than one town, they aren't in touch well enough to know that. They dons't know how to fight well, they don't have any training or leadership. They are just individuals, desperate and exhausted. They need to break something, need to make someone pay, but they are in this cage surrounded by businesses and neighborhoods. Like lions, they fling themselves against the bars and lash out at anything they can reach. Their helplessness is supposed to be entertaining, but it's not.
It's like gladiator sports. We're watching from the stands and delivering our verdict. They are tearing each other apart, hemmed in by tanks and automatic weapons, helpless and frustrated. They will continue until they are dead, dying a little every time.
But people, they are us. We will have our chance too. If we ever have a hot button to press, TPTB will press it someday. We can avoid that only if we shrug and turn away from Ferguson. If we keep never standing for anything then sure we'll never be tossed into the ring, but then what was the point of knowing all the wrongs in the nation? Is wallowing in conspiracy that fulfilling?

Best thing for these folks to do is go home, get a job or start a business or do something - anything - constructive. Go back to school, something. "Cornered'? My guess is we will not respond at all -- that is the pattern to now -- and therefore we will never respond because nothing can make us move from our comfortable little hole. And since we will never respond we will never know the name of this evil, and instead go willing to the slaughter.

I lived in downtown LA during the Rodney King riots. For 3 days there were NO police other than a few escorting firetrucks. I lived in a 12 story condo and those of us with arms kept a watch from strategic points and from the rooftop and we prepared to bolt stairwells, disable elevators and fire upon assholes. Each day I commuted to and from Beverly Hills where I was working. I started using the freeway because it was safest. Fires were everywhere, looting, madness all over.
The King riots in particular encouraged citizens nationwide to urge their police departments to gear up and prepare for mob lawlessness. No one wants a beaten police force that lets in mob anarchy.
