Disinformation War Escalates: Ukraine, Rebels Accuse Each Other Of Attacking Refugee Convoy
The world has completely forgotten the latest round of disinformation spread by the Ukraine government, one which sent the "market" plunging, namely that a Russian military convoy was attacked and almost completely "eliminated" on Ukraine territory on Thursday night, a statement which was also "confirmed" by none other than the Ukraine president, yet where not a single trace of evidence was released showing any such convoy destruction. So it is time for yet another round of (dis)information warfare, which we got this morning when Ukraine accused pro-Russian rebels on Monday of hitting a refugee convoy of buses with rocket fire near the eastern city of Luhansk, killing people trapped in the burning vehicles.
Eager to move on from Friday's disinformation fiasco, Ukrainian military spokesmen said the bus convoy had been in an area of fierce fighting between government forces and the separatists. As Reuters reports, it had come under fire from rebel Grad and mortar launchers, they said, causing an unknown number of casualties.
"A powerful artillery strike hit a refugee convoy near the area of Khryashchuvatye and Novosvitlivka. The force of the blow on the convoy was so strong that people were burned alive in the vehicles - they weren't able to get themselves out," military spokesman Anatoly Proshin told Ukrainian news channel 112.ua.
Describing the attack as a "bloody crime", another military spokesman, Andriy Lysenko, said: "A lot of people have been killed including women and children. The number of the dead is being established."
And in keeping with the endless flow of BS emanating from east Ukraine, where civilians are merely collateral damage to an epic information war, and just to confuse everyone if not the algos which today are stricly in "de-escalation" mode, the separatists promptly accused Ukraine of the attack, when a rebel leader denied his forces had the military capability to conduct such an attack, and accused Kiev forces of regularly attacking the area and also using Russian-made Grad missiles.
"The Ukrainians themselves have bombed the road constantly with airplanes and Grads. It seems they've now killed more civilians like they've been doing for months now. We don't have the ability to send Grads into that territory," said Andrei Purgin, deputy prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic.
Another rebel spokesman denied any civilian convoy had been struck, challenging the Kiev authorities to produce evidence.
Alas, something tells us that in this propaganda warfare, "evidence" is the last thing that anyone can produce, considering the events from Friday, and considering that a month after the MH-17 disaster, Ukraine still has to release the confiscated air-traffic control recordings, which even the CIA would have been able to thoroughly fabricate by now.
And now back to today's market surge whose catalyst the few carbon-based traders left describe as peace breaking out around the world once again.

I recall seeing a youtube video on the day of the downing of MH17 that showed the plane falling from the sky, dead in the air, with one engine on fire, but otherwise structurally intact. I imagine that video has been scrubbed by now.
Now, don't air to air missiles go for heat sources? Like engines? And wouldn't a large SAM like a BUK completely blow apart a plane like MH17?
My theory: they shot MH17 with an air to air missle, but it hit one engine and either due to pilot intervention or bad luck, the plane started turning south towards rebel held territory. To avoid the possiblity of the pilot getting the plane down with one engine, they then lit up the cockpit with 30mm. Bye bye MH17.
Some air to air missiles are heat-seekers but some are radar guided. A Ukie fighter like the Mig29 would carry both.

It is quite remarkable how little damage a missile does sometimes. There are several reported incidents of missiles hitting a civillian jets and just wrecking the engine.
Usually the engine shards puncture something flammable, fuel or oil and then it progresses from there.

You don't begin to get it. The Russians do not seek the extermination of the Ukrainians.
Kiev's policy is to solve the problem of Ukraine's non-viability by cleasing East Ukraine of Russians and replacing them with West Ukrainians. This is a Nazi-style solution. And to bring it about, they are sending missiles indiscriminately into residential ares of Donetsk and Lugansk -- precisely what Hamas was doing to Israel. We are now supporting in Ukraine what we found unacceptable in Palestine.
The Russians do not aim for any kind of ethinc cleasing or extermination of anyone. Quite the opposite. Like Kiev, they propose putting an end to the Ukrainian Republic's non-viability -- that is to saying making Ukraine viable -- but , unlike Kiev, they are no using Nazi methods.
They wants to negotiate revisions to the constitution that would embrace the reality of Ukraine as a country that looks East and West simultaneously -- direct regional elections for regional governors (now they are appointed centrally by Kiev), regional autonomy, neutrality as between East and West made a constitutional provision, equal legal status for Russian and Ukrainian as official languages of states, etc.
Ukraine is a Muscovite creation. Lenin gifted Donbass to the Ukrainian SSR in 1922, Stalin gifted Western Ukraine to the Ukrainian SSR in 1939, Khrushchev gifted Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954.
The current Ukrainian Republic came about not because the people of Ukraine demanded independence from Moscow or because they wrested it from the old USSR; it came about when Boris Yeltsin, then head of the RSFSR, conspired with his counterparts in the Ukrainian and Byelorussian SSRs to desolve the union treaty -- thus abolishing the USSR out from under Mikhail Gorbachev. Thus, Boris Yeltsin emerged as the supreme leader. Ukraine owes its current independence to Russia and to no one else, least of all its own efforts.
Thus there is no evidence whatsover to suggest Russia is interested in exterminating Ukrainains. You're right. That is a depressing read, and the comments are worse. Krugman clearly knows better. For him to have written an analysis of the Ukraine situation without mentioning any of the actions of the Junta, the EU or US is damning.
The most discouraging part, as you mention, is the attitude of the Liberal intellegentsia that it's all somehow pre-ordained and inevitable. This is the primary reason I couldn't ever be a Liberal. To be a Liberal in America, you have to have the comforts and privileges available to those who acquiesce. Then you sit back in your comfort and fabricate rationalizations for why you can't actually do anything except go along to get along, and tolerate absolutely anything to avoid jeopardizing your comforts and privileges.
When I was in college I had a professor whom I very much admired. He was bright, committed, and vocal. A bit radical, but sensible. I didn't see him for some 15 years after leaving college. Out of the blue, he contacted me and we went for a very nice dinner. He had gotten older as had I, and he now had tenure, a nice salary and perks, and had "made it" in his profession. He'll be employed until he decides not to be anymore. At the end of dinner, after nice conversation, he asked me if I had the same values as a 35 year-old (at that time) working my way up in my profession, starting to get some of the material rewards and creature comforts, as well as costs and responsibilities, of adulthood, professional success, etc. I was a little confused by his question. Opinions change as one gets new information and perspective, but your values don't change if they're really your values and you have been honest with yourself the whole time. I told him so and he smiled. He said, "I remember when I used to feel like that," as if when I really grew up I'd also change all my values around to comfort myself and retroactively justify my decisions.
No. I reject that. My values never did rule out that I could achieve success and comfort if I did the right things and had a bit of good fortune. I hold myself to the rules I hold others to. I don't excuse selfishness or self-delusion on my part; I'm tougher on myself than I am on other, due in no small part to the arrogance that has also driven me to succeed.

For Putin and Russia as a whole, the war in Ukraine is hugely profitable. He took over Crimea costlessly, without a single shot being fired.
The war in eastern Ukraine is a civil war that Russia is marginally involved in, and that doesn't cost Russia much. It will end eventually, and as part of the settlement Russia will get to keep Crimea. Consider how much it would have cost Russia to buy that much prime beach-front real estate!

There was a Reuters dispatch out of Tripoli, Libya last night that warplanes of unknown origin were flying over the city and explosions were heard. It also reported that none of the fighting militias have aircraft. That was the last of any info reported. So was the report erroneous? Was further coverage spiked? Whose planes were those? Nobody's looking there.

On August 6 the Russian Investigative Committee claimed it had “irrefutable evidence“ of the use of weapons similar to phosphorous bombs by Kiev military forces against civilians. The eastern Ukraine independence supporters, which have been fighting Kiev government forces since April, have also repeatedly accused Kiev of using phosphorous weapons prohibited by the Geneva Conventions.

NEW YORK, August 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is planning to request an official report on the progress of the investigation into the crash of a Malaysian passenger plane in eastern Ukraine, Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said Monday.
"We will ask for a briefing by the UN Secretariat on the progress of the implementation of Resolution 2166," Churkin told reporters at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Churkin said it had been a month since the start of the probe and paragraph 13 of the resolution envisions periodical reports by the UN secretary general on the progress of the investigation.
On August 14, the Dutch Safety Board, which is in charge of victim identification and probing the cause of the disaster, said it had finished its work in Ukraine, and that an initial report on the flight MH17 crash will be released during the first week of September.
