Ferguson Curfew Cancelled As National Guard Arrives; Holder Demands To "Remove The Damn Tanks"
The Missouri Governor Jay Nixon gave "no heads up" to the White House before deploying The National Guard and has now made another abrupt decision as The National Guard closes in on Ferguson:

We presume when there are military tanks rolling through the streets of a town, there is no need for the actual implementation of a curfew... This once again rubs the administration's nose in it as AG Holder's comments from last week hang in the air: "get those damned tanks out of there."
The neighborhood has been under a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew the past two days, after Nixon declared a state of emergency. That has now changed...
Authorities on Monday lifted the overnight curfew for Ferguson, Missouri, after two nights.
The announcement came from Gov. Jay Nixon, who earlier in the day ordered the National Guard to the St. Louis suburb after a week of clashes between police and protesters over the police shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.
Nixon said that the National Guard would have a limited mission and that overall command would still be the responsibility of the Highway Patrol, which took over security in Ferguson on Thursday.
The National Guard, under the command of Brig. Gen. Gregory Mason, will “provide protection, and ensure the safety of our Unified Command Center, which was the target last night of a coordinated attack,” Nixon said.
Nixon said that law enforcement officers were the target of gunfire on Sunday. The violence also included firebombs, looting and “a coordinated attempt to overrun the unified Command Center,” Nixon said.

Mr. Holder, the attorney general, rewrote a statement about Ferguson he was planning to issue to emphasize he expected local authorities "to complete a thorough, fair investigation in their own right,'' even though the FBI had opened its own case into whether Mr. Brown's civil rights had been violated, a law-enforcement official said.
The two sides also clashed later in the week over the Ferguson Police Department's plan to release the surveillance tape of the convenience-store robbery. Lawyers in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division objected, saying it would anger the community and intensify protests by those who felt it was an attack on Mr. Brown's reputation rather than an evenhanded disclosure of information, law-enforcement officials said.
The police department decided to release the video Friday, over the continued objections of federal officials. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said last week the move came in response to numerous media freedom-of-information requests.
Federal, state, and local authorities also have disagreed publicly over the tactics and equipment deployed to deal with protests.

"Tell them to remove the damn tanks," Mr. Holder told his deputies on Thursday, according to a law-enforcement official, referring to heavily armored vehicles the local police had used. That day there were discussions among local officials about how to scale back the armed presence, officials said.

Michael Brown was 18 year old adult and unarmed. But he was also 6'4" in height and weighed 292 lbs. Obviously, he was very capable of throwing lesser sized people around like rag dolls as shown by the video showing his strong arm robbery of the Quik Trip that was released.
If this "kid" was fighting the cop that shot him, moments after the strong arm robbery, and attempting to take the cops gun as has been reported, it would seem to be a pretty clear case of a justifiable shooting in self defense.....

"Tanks" are any vehicles that rioting looting lawless mobs can't effectively kick and dent, firebomb, smash the windows out of, destroy, flip over, etc. Thus, what Holder wants is more vehicles that can be more easily destroyed by half witted lazy mobs, and fewer secure vehicles that take more planning and work.

Robert Putnam’s sobering new diversity research scares its author.

Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, is very nervous about releasing his new research, and understandably so. His five-year study shows that immigration and ethnic diversity have a devastating short- and medium-term influence on the social capital, fabric of associations, trust, and neighborliness that create and sustain communities. He fears that his work on the surprisingly negative effects of diversity will become part of the immigration debate, even though he finds that in the long run, people do forge new communities and new ties.
Putnam’s study reveals that immigration and diversity not only reduce social capital between ethnic groups, but also within the groups themselves. Trust, even for members of one’s own race, is lower, altruism and community cooperation rarer, friendships fewer. The problem isn’t ethnic conflict or troubled racial relations, but withdrawal and isolation. Putnam writes: “In colloquial language, people living in ethnically diverse settings appear to ‘hunker down’—that is, to pull in like a turtle.”
In the 41 sites Putnam studied in the U.S., he found that the more diverse the neighborhood, the less residents trust neighbors. This proved true in communities large and small, from big cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Boston to tiny Yakima, Washington, rural South Dakota, and the mountains of West Virginia. In diverse San Francisco and Los Angeles, about 30 percent of people say that they trust neighbors a lot. In ethnically homogeneous communities in the Dakotas, the figure is 70 percent to 80 percent.

'Group think' comment on riots is a counter indicator. A 'paid for' riot is not a 'Group Think' event by definition. It is a premeditated event.
Yes. Lot of different organizations and individuals could pay for riots, as they are capable of paying for most things, this fact doesn't by itself indicate that these particular riots were paid for.
No. Riots cannot result in laws or hearings supporting civil and individual rights - because you can't support something by breaking it. And breaking individual property, disrupting civil behavior is the definition of a riot.
If it doesn't do those things then it isn't a riot.
Alternatively, resultant hearings can PRETEND to support civil and individual rights - while ACTUALLY screwing down the clamps on freedom some more. This is an old careworn tactic that lets a bunch of criminals ride in on white horses to 'fix' the problem that they themselves created.
THE PROBLEM is that heavy-handed government behavior is breaking the bond between goverment and governed in a systematic way. The PROBLEM can't solve itself - or it would be no problem.
Had the government not behaved systematically in a heavy-handed way generally, then Brown would be alive in jail for assaulting an officer of the law. And there would be nothing to riot or protest about.
Given that ther is a problem, the response may be real grassroots, or astroturf, or some combination. It is an academic point, because whatever the source of the commotion, the discourse amongst observers is real.
There are a wide variety of interests who are trying to make this about race. But while the riots are more unique, the incidence of a police killing of an unarmed suspect, with controversy as to the necessity and no obligation on authorities to prove a justification, is anything but unique.
It happens all the time. But it happens to the more vulnerable, whether poor, mentally disturbed, or socially unconnected, more than to the rest for the simple reason that there are that many fewer reasons for an empowered officer to check his inclinations with thoughts of consequences.

I'm not an expert on US Activism. But I'm thinking it took 100 years to get Worker Rights in the USA & Equal pay for women. This was pushed down by LB Johnson Admin. Which is surprising to me. Same with OSHA.
I can' think of a single Issue that was effectively dealt with a cross a group of states. Gahary reports on a trial that began July 28 with Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue representing his deceased brother to show that the FBI has a video of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing on April 19, 1995, which proves that others were involved and refutes the U.S. government’s account of what happened.
His brother, Kenneth, was 44 years old when he “was found hanged in his cell in Oklahoma during the investigation of the bombing. Although his death was ruled a suicide, Oklahoma City’s chief medical examiner said Trentadue was ‘very likely…murdered.’ His body was so badly beaten and bruised from the top of his head to the soles of his feet, 41 wounds and bruises in total, that it would be quite clear to the unbiased observer that he was horrifically tortured and spent the last seconds of his life in excruciating pain.
“Kenneth’s cell was washed out before any investigation could be performed."
Writes Gahary: “Many OKC bombing researchers believe Kenneth’s murder was due to the fact that he bore a striking resemblance to Richard Lee Guthrie Jr., a suspected co-conspirator in the bombing. Guthrie, too, died in federal custody, allegedly from suicide by hanging.”

Update: FBI witnesses at the trial said the tape did not exist but one FBI witness who had known Timothy McVeigh was not present at the trial and Trentadue suggested he had been told to stay away. But the judge has ordered that witness, John Matthews, to appear before him for questioning. The judge took the lawsuit under advisement at the close of the trial and a ruling is expected by the end of the year.
