Ferguson Curfew Cancelled As National Guard Arrives; Holder Demands To "Remove The Damn Tanks"

Tyler Durden's picture

The Missouri Governor Jay Nixon gave "no heads up" to the White House before deploying The National Guard and has now made another abrupt decision as The National Guard closes in on Ferguson:

  • *NIXON'S CALL TO HALT CURFEW TONIGHT MADE IN E-MAILED STATEMENT

We presume when there are military tanks rolling through the streets of a town, there is no need for the actual implementation of a curfew... This once again rubs the administration's nose in it as AG Holder's comments from last week hang in the air: "get those damned tanks out of there."

The neighborhood has been under a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew the past two days, after Nixon declared a state of emergency. That has now changed...

As NBC News reports,

Authorities on Monday lifted the overnight curfew for Ferguson, Missouri, after two nights.

The announcement came from Gov. Jay Nixon, who earlier in the day ordered the National Guard to the St. Louis suburb after a week of clashes between police and protesters over the police shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.

Nixon said that the National Guard would have a limited mission and that overall command would still be the responsibility of the Highway Patrol, which took over security in Ferguson on Thursday.

The National Guard, under the command of Brig. Gen. Gregory Mason, will “provide protection, and ensure the safety of our Unified Command Center, which was the target last night of a coordinated attack,” Nixon said.

Nixon said that law enforcement officers were the target of gunfire on Sunday. The violence also included firebombs, looting and “a coordinated attempt to overrun the unified Command Center,” Nixon said.

And as WSJ reports, locals and Feds are not in agreement...

Mr. Holder, the attorney general, rewrote a statement about Ferguson he was planning to issue to emphasize he expected local authorities "to complete a thorough, fair investigation in their own right,'' even though the FBI had opened its own case into whether Mr. Brown's civil rights had been violated, a law-enforcement official said.

The two sides also clashed later in the week over the Ferguson Police Department's plan to release the surveillance tape of the convenience-store robbery. Lawyers in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division objected, saying it would anger the community and intensify protests by those who felt it was an attack on Mr. Brown's reputation rather than an evenhanded disclosure of information, law-enforcement officials said.

The police department decided to release the video Friday, over the continued objections of federal officials. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said last week the move came in response to numerous media freedom-of-information requests.

Federal, state, and local authorities also have disagreed publicly over the tactics and equipment deployed to deal with protests.

...

"Tell them to remove the damn tanks," Mr. Holder told his deputies on Thursday, according to a law-enforcement official, referring to heavily armored vehicles the local police had used. That day there were discussions among local officials about how to scale back the armed presence, officials said.

We are sure this, too, will end very well: for the happy ending tune in tonight sometime after sundown.

With martial law and the national guard in place, there is no need for a curfew.  You step out of line, you pay the consequences, whether it's noon or midnight.  Besides, you don't have to kill them all.  Just one or two, and with a lot of publicity, all those brave thugs will run back to their Mama's house and hide and smoke crack in the basement until it's over.

Curfew lifted because it wasn't working and was only provoking more idiocy.  Everytime the police do some jackboot shit in Ferguson the locals respond in kind.

Apparently all it takes to finally get people to wake up to the militarization and overuse of force is for a poor, mostly unemployed, continually oppressed populace to finally say they're not going to take it anymore.  While looting a local store to protest police brutality is beyond stupid, here's a group of people standing up (in various ways, protesting, fighting etc) against the biggest gang of armed thugs in their community and the internet is abuzz with some of the most racist shit I've ever seen in my life.  To me, it just goes to show that even among many of the "liberty loving" minds on this board, we, as a people, still cannot truly address the bigger issue because we're too busy pointing fingers at each other and calling each other "animals"

So is looting and rioting stupid, or is it courageous and "standing up" for yourself? Which is it?

Has it crossed your mind that people are judged by their behavior, and when the behavior of a certain group of people has certain patterns to it (like rioting whenever one of your own is shot in questionable circumstances), then that particular people will be judged in a certain way?

In other words: why do you think it's racist to point out that blacks like to loot in these types of situations, when no other racial group does so when similar events happen?

There's a mixture of all happening in Ferguson.  Thousands have taken to the streets in protest, dozens have looted and destroyed property, a handful have even directly attacked police.

The looting is particularly stupid, my statement about racism wasn't directly connected to anyone criticising looting, it's fairly objective to say that's dumb.  It's not something we have to get too far into the weeds on, there are plenty of obviously trolling racist remarks on this topic throughout the discussion.

Thought experiment for folks that think calling looting blacks "animals" do you also use the same term when you hear about poor white meth users killing each other or robbing a store?  If yes, carry on, if no (and be honest with yourself) why not?

Looting - violating private property - is bad, rioting - fighting the police and forcing them to expend resources to keep you from taking them out - is good. If they were shooting at the police and trying to overrun the "Command center" rather than attacking stores, their tactics are moving in the right direction. What we need is for white people in other parts of the country to grow the balls to attack police stations and other .gov installations in their neighborhoods.

Having lived through both the Watts riots of 1965 and the Rodney King riots of 1992 in LA and observed the aftermaths, I can say nothing new is going on in Ferguson.

Summary of the National Guard deployment in Watts (and in previous riots) here:

As for the causes, LA manufacturing went away -- for many reasons. And yes, the Iowans who settled LA were racist.

Did the protests/riots change anything? Well, yeah. In rare spots. Mostly not.

If you have to ask for permission to protest anywhere that is public domain they've already won as far as trampling on a Constitutional right.

If these people believe in this stuff they will just say fuck you and go protest somewhere the cops don't want them protesting. If the individuals in the National Guard really serve through the institutions and are we the people as opposed to serving for the institutions they will stand behind the protesters right to do so and not interfere as long they assemble peacefully. They won't pay lip service to the Constitution if they truely believe in it as the law of the land and back the people over the PD on this one as long as that condition holds that they are doing it peacefully.

Yes they need to change the conversation and use the controlled media turning this into a race only problem and to keep whitelandia behind the militarized police state since they are dumb rootin tootin lootin niggers and had it coming anyways....

That can't have the conversation be about the militarization of the PDs and how they are not protecting and serving we the people which includes whitelandia and the dumb rootin tootin lootin niggers.

You saw what they were doing to protesters and journalists training red dots on their heads to intimidate them from doing their jobs and in essence attacking the Constitution by doing so.

The reality is white cops and racism go to together when they have to work the ghettos. If they actually saw these people as human beings and not animals and sub humans, militarized police force or not the race problem wouldn't be a major issue either. But this is what happens when you the police are not part of the communities.

They maybe dumb rootin tootin lootin niggers but they are still Americans and in turn that makes them your dumb rootin tootin lootin niggers and if you believe in freedom, liberty, Constitutions and all that jazz you have to deal with the issue as you would with problematic family member not some human fido you wack on the nose with a newspaper when they shit on the rug. They are still we the people.

"an unarmed black teenager"

1. What difference does the race of the individual make?

2. Although 18 is technically teenage a person of 18 is in fact a legal adult, what is commonly reffer to as a man.

3. An unarmed 6'4" 292 lb man can do a hell of a lot of damage; expecially if they are enraged and/or on drugs.

4a. Have the autopsies that have been performed included testing for drugs?

4b.  If so, was Mr. Brown high on drugs, and if so, what drugs?

5. The decision to declare a state of emergency and to implement a curfew seems prudent considering the continuing violence, including the looting of multiple business extablishments and the shooting of at least two individuals last night according to numerous reports.  Exactly why is the Federal Government trying to interefere in this matter when it is obviously a local and/or state issue that is entirely within the discretion and perview of the local and state authorities?

6. Under what authority is the DOD and/or DOJ interfering in the administration of the local and state  government in administering/governing Ferguson and MO?

7. What absolute Federal guarantees of the protection of persons and property, if any, are being extended to the residents and businesses in Ferguson by the Federal authorites who have chosen to interfere with the decisions of the local and state authorites concening the security and law enforcement activities in Ferguson?

There is something about race relations and Federal power which is extremely convoluted here.  I started writing about it but it's too important to deal with on the fly.

The core of it is that so long as minorities, especially Black people, depend on the Federal government for protection we are not going to be able to unite against the Federal power, even as it leads us to our doom.

The only way out is to unite around taking that Federal power back for the people.  But this requires that we come to terms with the racism that divides us.

There is no other way.

"The only way out is to unite around taking that Federal power back for the people.  But this requires that we come to terms with the racism that divides us."

A black cop shot a black 6'4" 292 lb MAN that had apparently just robbed a business in Ferguson.

Until the issue of black on black violence is candidly discussed and confronted it is unlikely that conversations concerning racism and race based violence can or will be candid.  Until candid discussions about the basis for racism are discussed, and race based violence is one of them; terms cannot be agreed upon.

I understand and have commented at length about the economic pressures, in particular those faced by black males in the present depressed economy and inflationary environment; but, the issue of culture of violence must be addressed simultaneously with the economic issues if these problems can possibly be resolved..

The inflation being caused by The FED cartel, and the economic and financial repressions associated must cease.

-So too must the racially motivated and predicated violence.
