NATO Admits Putin Holds "Short-Term Cards", But "Won't Be Around Forever"

Tyler Durden's picture

Following a summit in Brussels, a senior NATO diplomat proudly proclaimed that 'allies' have pledged more spending and will beef up its presence in Eastern Europe. However, likely to the chagrin of President Obama (and the West's narrative), he let slip some uncomfortable truths:

  • *NATO DIPLOMAT SAYS PUTIN HOLDS TACTIAL SHORT-TERM CARDS (hhmm, ok)
  • *NATO DIPLOMAT SAYS LONG-TERM GEOPOLITICAL TRENDS FAVOR THE WEST (phew...)
  • *NATO DIPLOMAT SAYS PUTIN WON'T BE AROUND FOREVER (threat or warning?)

So, all the west has to do is be patient? Wait out Putin? We suspect that 'strategy' may get accelerated at some point.

Wow, NATO and the USSA must be getting their butts kicked in the Ukraine to make these kinds of noises. Probably has something to do with triple dip recessions in Europe, agricultural sanctions, demands for more useless military spending from bankrupt EU economies, budding anger over the MH17 False Flag...

As for short term advantages,  I guess it will be a few years before the USSA figures out how to magically levitate NatGas to the EU, at the same price as Russian gas, LOL

Not even the Fifth dimension is safe in the longer run.

BTW, the Ukies are threatening to sanction russian Nat Gas to the EU, forcing huge gas shortages upon the Europeans.  I thought the point of the Ukraine joining the EU was to further economic integration.

With Allies like the Ukies, who needs enemies, LOL!

The western elites are desperately trying to come up with alternatives that hide the fact that through their own insatiable economic imperialism, they have now yielded the moral high ground to Russia.  Quite a trick, given Russia's and Putin's record, but if it's a choice between Russian power and western elite hegemony, Russia is coming out on top. They may be a one-eyed king, but they are currently matched against the blind.

Right, what does it matter whether Putin is around 50 years from now?  Russian forces could stealth-invade eastern Ukraine this year and take it. Once that happens, NATO can't risk The Big One by attacking them, so it's Russia's to keep. (Um, NATO aren't that stupid as to take the world to the nuclear brink for the sake of Ukraine, are they?

"Forget Visa and MasterCard. After the two American credit system payment companies froze accounts without notice in March, Russia has been looking for an alternative in China UnionPay. China UnionPay plans to have 2 million cards in Russia in the next three years.

Instead of seeing the small Visa and MasterCard logo on credits cards, ATMs, and retail outlets, Russians will start to see the three words “China. Union. Pay.”

China UnionPay first emerged in 2002 on the domestic Chinese market as an alternative to Visa and MasterCard, but quickly expanded internationally, and now is already number one in terms of quantity of cards in the world.

Russia’s biggest banks - VTB- Gazprombank, Promsvyazbank, Alfa Bank, MTS, and Rosbank- are already making technical preparations, running tests on Union Bank cards.

“VTB24 already serves China UnionPay cards in its ATM network and now the bank is in negotiations with this payment system to start acquiring retail merchants,” VTB24’s press office said in a statement."

The other side to the Unionpay story is that Putin/Russia did not foresee the risk of having american credit cards being the only major credit cards in Russia.  Nor did they see the threat of the SWIFT system and how it was a potential financial weapon.  Nor did they see the threat of using US computer operating systems and having their computer systems supplied by a US company.

I mean really, who did not know the CIA types were using backdoors and delivering compromised computers.  And Russia has them in sensitive areas including their banking industry.

Putin is many ways is moving forward but is having to catch up to where he should have had Russia years ago.  Including supplying gas to China, direct money/trade exchanges without the dollar on all this.  Catching up is not a sign of being a master chess player in the recent past.

Key Observation - was Putin distracted or just not thinking?

it goes well beyond your list to  - Yanocovich - why didnt he -  once he saw the USA intent from intelligence he had - concerning the coup  / nudelman - direct Yanocovich to change to federation as soon as he was elected and therefore home rule for Yanacovich  home territory in east ukraine? it would have been simple then

further the pipeline which USA wants to buy now from Kiev - he could have sold or privatized in 2004 with Yanocovich in place and then there would be no threat

and that is what we can see  - many more issues probably - he was asleep for some strange reason

Americans must break the stranglehold the corporate media has over its public opinion. By ignoring the slaughter of Eastern Ukrainians while at the same time describing the people of Eastern Ukraine as “parasites,” “terrorists” and “insurgents,” it is engaging in the rhetoric that precedes genocide. For what purpose?

Richard Walker says in “Will Putin Step in to Stop Genocide?” in the August issue of AFP, that Petro Porosenko’s junta government’s “aim is to define the opposition as ‘subhuman,’ thereby making it easier to justify eradicating them.”

Walker garnered an interview with a former Russian diplomat familiar with the Ukraine crisis who agreed to speak on the promise of anonymity. This is what he had to say:

“The hype out of Washington is not only bad for East-West relations, it has the potential for a wider conflict. The campaign to define Vladimir Putin as an enemy of the West and the man responsible for the crisis in Ukraine is false and dangerous. He is the one leader in all of this who has shown restraint. He could have chosen the same option the U.S. once used when it entered the Kosovo crisis by opting for the principle of ‘responsibility to protect.’ He could have used it as a pretext for invading Eastern Ukraine to stop the slaughter of ethnic Russians. Instead, he has chosen not to do so because he knows it would create a wider conflict.

“I believe he knows NATO would like him to invade Eastern Ukraine to justify NATO’s expansionist policies. He has also not overreacted to NATO’s encirclement of Russia. How would Americans feel if Russian forces were on their borders? It does not require much intelligence to see a Cold War agenda motivating Washington. That worries many Europeans, who live next to Russia and do business with it.

“As I see it, there is a danger this crisis will lead to something much more serious. Every leader can be pushed too far and for Putin there are pressures within as well as without. Efforts to hurt Russia economically are not only vindictive but invite retaliation. There is a point where escalation becomes inevitable. Realpolitik calls for cooler heads. Sadly, the anti-Russian mindset has taken hold in Washington and London, too.”

So, that's their Plan B. Outlive Putin? Ha!

Putin is barely 61 years old, born in 1952. Given his physique, judo exercises and food control etc he must be doing, he will probably live until 90, which is a good 30 years, so we just have to wait until 2044 rolls around...that's all.

Given that Castro, a fellow communist, is 88 years today, being born in 1926, luck may be on Putin's side.

Let's hope the NATO politicians will be around to kick some Russian ass..... in 2044!

BTW, this is what Putin does in his spare time, as he told Naomi Campbell in 2011: http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/comment/articles/2011-01/31/gq-comment-naom...

If Putin survives, as much as Russia's oldest man who died in 2012 at 122 years of age, then see you all....in 2075!!

Interestingly, Putin is 61 years today so we just have to wait another 61 years until 2075, if he lives until 122 years.

6 + 1 = 7, another 6 + 1 = 7. Putin is living the lucky life! Just ask Madame Lagarde. 7 may indeed be his lucky number.

These comments should have been expected. Since this Ukraine Issue popped up, the tactics have been such that Putin was moved from the head of the table, to the end of the table, to another table in the crowded banquet room.

All that is being said is they intend to remove Putin from the banquet room. I don't expect the West will have to do much as the Russian political culture is very "intense". I suspect Putin's appeal amongst his lieutenants has been muted as of late. If Putin cannot get geo-political traction, one of his minions will step up.

Expect domestic pressure to build within Russia over the next year. This will link back to the mess/corruption surrounding the Olympic Games. Both instances, the Ukraine Issue and the Olympic Games Fiasco make Putin look bad.

Sochi Olympics excellent.  Looked gorgeous on TV.  Russia -- with GDP per capita on a par with Portugal -- won more Gold medals and more total medals than such filthy rich powerhouses as Germany and the US. Opening and closing ceremonies dealt in a beautiful and moving way with Russian history and culture.  If the West is so great and Russia so lousy, why do we give the world (in our Super Bowl half-time shows) a steady diet of raunchiness replete with wardrobe malfunctions, whereas Russia gives us Dostoevskiy and Tolstoy? Russia depicted Stalinist repression in its Olympic ceremonies; can you imagine us owning up to to our abortion holocaust (30 million dead babies since Roe v. Wade) in a Super Bowl pageant?

Add to that the west having a completely corrupt economic model that has already transferred 80% of its wealth into the hands of a small group of banksters(Vitali Glattfelder and Battiston , 2011). This means the assumption by the NATO diplomat that somehow, despite the parasite taking 80% of what the west produces, it will economically overcome parasite free economies where 100% of wealth creation is recycled to the people. This assumption looks utterly and completely idiotic. Does the NATO diplomat have a name so we can see who not to vote for in future?

Talk like this is really a sign of desperation. It means that NATO's expansionary paradigm is out of options and out of ideas. The only thing the West can do now is to try to back out of this confrontation with Russia without losing too much face. Putin has even given them several opportunities to do that and they've still screwed it up.

After all, Sheer, shit-faced audacity may not be the best strategy in the world, but it gets the job done."

Putin will be around until the 2020's at the very least. He has a dictatorial grip on the power structure but so far he has played it "by the book" for propaganda purposes. He will be around 70 when his fourth term ends, assuming he makes it that far. One can only hope he steps aside by that point, but he probably sees himself as the czar so it wouldn't surprise me if he decided to "be involved" until his death.

Putin may croak at some point, but his legacy to Russia and the rest of the global 'we ain't no damn U.S. sycophants' crowd will live on for a long, long time.

Besides - Vladdy-Poot will finger a successor before he leaves, one that will carry on the mission.

So this is an admission by NATO that they are without any real strategy, without any real leverage against Russia ('cause Russia just keeps advancing in spite of the "costs" of repeatedly kicking the West in the balls) and without any brains.

Note to the NATO boneheads: Putin is working hard and smart to solidify what you call his merely "tactical" cards into fully strategic ones, while you are shooting your foot hard in order to squander what little advantage you have left.

Can't say I agree. One thing about the Russians, they are used to suffering and they will again if they have to. From starting to develop a generation of Russians who wanted to be American, the US is about to turn another generation into 'the US is an evil empire' believers'. That is a powerful support for Putin.

One of the unintended consequences of the trade war is that whereas Russia can ride out a temporary reduction in food supply and exports, probably leading to a drop in its net purchases from the world, its exports of gas, and rarely heard about but more difficult to replace, oil will continue meaning their currency reserves will increase, making the country financially stronger. If at the same time, as its contracts roll over, it moves to Ruble or gold payment, this will be another nail in the US$. Definitely part of the US plan that one!

Also, if the West capitulates and both sets of sanctions are dropped, the West should not expect the same level of business next year or again. Russia is making new partners this year and it seems that if you are a friend of Russia you can stay one as long as you treat them right. The opposite also applies.
