Why So Much Anger In Ferguson? 10 Facts About The Massive Economic Gap Between White & Black America

When people feel like they don't have anything else to lose, they are likely to do just about anything. Many in the mainstream media seem absolutely mystified as to why there is so much anger in Ferguson, but as I pointed out yesterday, all of this anger did not erupt out of a vacuum. Economic conditions in Ferguson, and for African-Americans as a whole, have been deteriorating for years. Sadly, many white Americans are totally oblivious to any of this. Many of them have absolutely no idea that the unemployment rate for black Americans is more than twice as high as it is for white Americans or that the average white household has 22 times as much wealth as the average black household.
But these are things that black communities are acutely aware of. Many African-Americans that live in poor neighborhoods deeply resent the fact that most of the people that live in the "good neighborhoods" are white while most of the people that live in "bad neighborhoods" are people of color. In fact, in America today a black child is nearly four times as likely to live in an impoverished neighborhood as a white child is. And when you throw endless police brutality and growing racial division in America into the mix, it is easy to understand why so many black Americans are so angry and frustrated these days.
Things didn't have to turn out this way. If we had all learned how to love one another and not judge one another by skin color, we could have had the kind of society that Martin Luther King once dreamed about...
And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we're free at last!"
But instead we have allowed ourselves to become increasingly divided. And I am sure that fact will once again be reflected in the comments following this article. There is so much anger and hatred in America today, and people seem to love to express their anger and hatred on the Internet.
For white Americans (myself included), I think that it would be good for us to put ourselves in the shoes of the people of Ferguson for a few moments. For years, the economy of Ferguson has been declining. The following is how Brookings summarized the current economic situation...
The city’s unemployment rate rose from less than 5 percent in 2000 to over 13 percent in 2010-12. For those residents who were employed, inflation-adjusted average earnings fell by one-third. The number of households using federal Housing Choice Vouchers climbed from roughly 300 in 2000 to more than 800 by the end of the decade.
Amid these changes, poverty skyrocketed. Between 2000 and 2010-2012, Ferguson’s poor population doubled. By the end of that period, roughly one in four residents lived below the federal poverty line ($23,492 for a family of four in 2012), and 44 percent fell below twice that level.
And as the New York Times recently detailed, racial tensions have been rising in the city for a very long time...
As African-Americans moved into the city and whites moved out, real estate agents and city leaders, in a pattern familiar elsewhere in the country, conspired to keep blacks out of the suburbs through the use of zoning ordinances and restrictive covenants. But by the 1970s, some of those barriers had started to fall, and whites moved even farther away from the city. These days, Ferguson is like many of the suburbs around St. Louis, inner-ring towns that accommodated white flight decades ago but that are now largely black. And yet they retain a white power structure.
Although about two-thirds of Ferguson residents are black, its mayor and five of its six City Council members are white. Only three of the town’s 53 police officers are black.
So it is understandable why a lot of Ferguson residents are so angry and so frustrated.
However, there is absolutely no excuse for the looting and the property destruction that have taken place.
Alternatively, there is absolutely no excuse for how brutally the (mostly white) police have handled peaceful protesters and the media. The police have been using smoke bombs, tear gas, flash bang grenades, rubber bullets and LRAD sound cannons against protesters that are not even armed. Meanwhile, the police have been doing next to nothing to stop criminals from looting stores and businesses all over Ferguson. It has pretty much been a textbook case of what not to do during a period of civil unrest.
Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and things will calm down in Ferguson soon.
But that doesn't mean that the underlying problems will have been fixed. The truth is that I believe that this is just a preview of what is coming to America in the years ahead. And much of the anger and frustration that is bubbling just under the surface in our communities has an economic element to it. The following are 10 startling facts about the massive economic gap between white America and black America that we see in our country today...
#1 For decades, the unemployment rate for black Americans has consistently been more than twice as high as the unemployment rate for white Americans. In July 2014, the official unemployment rate for white Americans was 5.3 percent. Meanwhile, the official unemployment rate for black Americans was 11.4 percent.
#2 A report released earlier this year discovered that the "underemployment rate" for African-American workers was 20.5 percent. But for white Americans it was only 11.8 percent.
#3 A study released back in 2012 found that the average white household has 22 times as much wealth as the average black household.
#4 African-American households make up only about 13 percent of the population, but they receive more than 26 percent of the food stamp benefits.
#5 One study discovered that 82 percent of white students graduate from high school but only 63.5 percent of black students do.
#6 Pew Research found that the income gap between white Americans and black Americans has continued to grow ever since the late 1960s...
The difference in median household incomes between whites and blacks has grown from about $19,000 in 1967 to roughly $27,000 in 2011 (as measured in 2012 dollars).
#7 In the United States today, 12 percent of white children live in areas of concentrated poverty, but 45 percent of African-American children do.
#8 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 19.9 percent of white children live in single parent homes. But for black children, the number is an astounding 52.1 percent.
#9 Since 1960, the percentage of white American adults that are married has declined from 74 percent to 55 percent. But for African-Americans the decline has been even more dramatic. Since 1960, the percentage of black American adults that are married has declined from 61 percent to 31 percent.
#10 In the United States, the incarceration rate for black men is more than six times higher than it is for white men.
So how do we solve these problems? People have been debating this for years, but nothing ever seems to actually get accomplished.
Meanwhile, the middle class continues to collapse and things continue to get even tougher for African-American communities. The following is an excerpt from a recent piece that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote for Time magazine entitled "The Coming Race War Won’t Be About Race"...
Dystopian books and movies like Snowpiercer, The Giver, Divergent, Hunger Games, and Elysium have been the rage for the past few years. Not just because they express teen frustration at authority figures. That would explain some of the popularity among younger audiences, but not among twentysomethings and even older adults. The real reason we flock to see Donald Sutherland’s porcelain portrayal in Hunger Games of a cold, ruthless president of the U.S. dedicated to preserving the rich while grinding his heel into the necks of the poor is that it rings true in a society in which the One Percent gets richer while our middle class is collapsing.
That’s not hyperbole; statistics prove this to be true. According to a 2012 Pew Research Center report, just half of U.S. households are middle-income, a drop of 11 percent since the 1970s; median middle-class income has dropped by 5 percent in the last ten years, total wealth is down 28 percent. Fewer people (just 23 percent) think they will have enough money to retire. Most damning of all: fewer Americans than ever believe in the American Dream mantra that hard work will get them ahead.
I wish that I could be more optimistic about the future of this country.
I wish that I could believe that we won't see a tremendous amount of chaos in the streets of America in the years ahead.
Unfortunately, the truth is that what is happening in Ferguson right now is just the tip of the iceberg. Once we hit the next major wave of our ongoing economic collapse, unemployment and economic despair in our major cities are going to grow rapidly. This will fuel more anger, more frustration, more protests, more looting and more rioting.
It has been said that desperate people do desperate things. And in the years ahead, ordinary Americans are going to become increasingly desperate.

Can't remember the last time I actually read every word of a ZH article.
Yeah me neither. We used to get a few quality thought provoking articles to read and discuss, and now we get bombarded with thoughtless garbage with no original insight. Like I said, if it weren't for the commentators, I wouldn't even bother.
I read the exonomics articles, but the social commentary ones I go straight to comments. I don't really read Snyders. I'll gloss over some points. You and Fonz and some others I consider old school are my main reason to be here. I just see it as crowdsourcing information. I've learned more from commentary here than anything else. ZH provides some stuff that gets you thinking, but what I glean from the comments is gold. Some of the new folks here have dumbed it down and the authors of some new articles are kinda shitty. At least they seemed to 86 The Diplomat. That's drivel right there.

Has ZH been taken over by MSM? There sure seems to be a lot of deflection of black America's problems to EVERYTHING and EVERYONE else under the sun. Gov't welfare, job inequality, yadda yadda yadda. I get the arguments how these issues may effect blacks, but come on, at the end of the day the responsibility lies at the feet of the black community. If their only solution is to burn, loot, trash, wallow in their own feces, then let them. In my opinion, their culture is the main culprit of their undoing.
Other groups have had it bad in American history - the Chinese/other asians during the mid to late 1800's. They were treated like slaves and were arguably the lowest class on the totem pole during this period, at least in the west. They seems to be doing alright in the high tech/engineering/mathematics/applied sciences.
Giving any legitimacy to 'black rage' is to admit these people are uncivilized animals, kept on the plantation and unable to work or vote. I do not accept that Blacks are uncivilized animals, and prefer to see them as equals.

Comments like this ignore the sacrifices whites make to accomodate blacks. We *DO* sacrifice everyday to try to live in harmony - it hasn't worked. We give up blood, treasure, we live in fear, we read appauling headlines of the violence in black communities (and often ours by blacks who invade) and all we ever here is "Gimmie more - you all raciss - fuck you". I ask this as a white man: from *our* persepective (not yours) what positive contributions do white gest *NOW* from having blacks in our nation? The stock answer to such a question usually runs along the line of "HOW DARE YOU WHITEY YOU ENSLAVED US WE BE MAKIN THIS NATION (which isn't true by any measure) RACISS!!! RACISS!!! RACISS!!!" this kind of response shuts down all debate and makes it impossible to solve anything. The simple fact of the matter is whites now sacrifice a lot to maintain blacks while blacks do not offer anything positive we couldn't do for ourselves. In fact blacks act like a huge weight on our backs. The fact that you do not see it or acknowledge it doesn't mean this isn't true. Wherever we work or live the first question we have to ask is "where are the blacks and how do I stay away from them". If you've the money you can move into a white neighborhood. At worst you'll get some disapproving looks to which you can unleash a federal salvo of litigation should you choose. If I and my family move into a black neighborhood what happens? How long before my wife and daughter are gang raped? How long before blacks starts preying on us? This is the problem. The police attack blacks and you attack whites. Do you see the connection? I think you have some valid points upon contribution to society as a whole, but I have numerous black friends that are good people so I do not believe you should paint with such a broad brush. I agree that throwing money at the problem is not helping but making every single black person out to be a gang raping thug is wrong. I don't have any solutions, but is agree that the current path isn't working. The culture of rap artists and thug lifestyle that is promoted may be a great place to start. Bill Cosby has some excellent ideas too. Fuckers like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson need to be shutdown first and foremost. Points 5, 8 and 9 explain most of the rest. If you don't come from a stable home that values education, your chance of ending up with a good education are slim, nor are you likely to end up with values that make for a stable community.
If you are poorly educated, your chance of being productive and well paid are small.
The only contribution whites have made to that is the welfare handouts, growing from LBJ's "war on poverty" and sustained by the Democrats who have 2 major constituent groups, one of which is black and the other a particular ethno-religious group, which has financed the dissolution of the nuclear family from which most of the others have followed. Before LBJ had his way, US blacks actually had a higher marriage rate that whites.

What a worthless article. Let's just go ahead and have the uncomfortable adult conversation here. It isn't pretty or nice, but whatever they are doing sure isn't working.
1) Education. It isn't valued in the black community. Education = generally higher paying jobs
2) Illegitimacy. You start out life behind the 8 ball, with no family structure (black males were replaced by welfare check), your odds for success go down quickly.
3) Culture. A violent, mysigonistic culture is not conducive to building wealth.
None of these items are caused by whitey. They are self-inflicted.
There is a cultural problem for sure, but it seems like a chicken and egg situation to me. Personal responsibility, sure. Completely self-inflicted? I don't think so.
Black men as a group seem to have failed in their role as patriarchs and providers. It hasn't been that long ago that discriminatory practices (Jim Crow) were in force, about 50 years. You can read in the bible about the "sins", aka errors, of the father affecting their descendants for generations.
So a cycle started of black men being unable en masse to be successful providers in the legal labor market. Then many of them failed to form legitimate families, abandoned their families and/or turned to the black market to earn a living.
Black women have been stepping up for years. In fact the idea that, as a community, blacks do not value education appears to be false when you consider that black women presently have the highest level of college enrollment.

Legalizing drugs would go a long way toward stamping out the thug life. Corporations would take over as our drug dealers.
As far as attitudes toward women in the community I suspect that the attitude that women are trash is driven by a couple of things. One, men being shamed that their women are stepping up and legitimately succeeding at a greater rate than black men. Two, that black women are accepting such treatment due to a shortage of available men because of so many black men being imprisoned.
On family formation/preservation we have a problem across races right now due to changes in cultural norms, a decrease in number of, and pay for physical labor type jobs better suited to men, and the increase in, and now necessity for women to work outside the home, which along with immigration has contributed to lower wages across the board.
IF you want see how blacks choose to live in mostly black nations look at the governments in Africa or Haiti. These are black run, black populated, mostly black nations with all or nearly all black representation. These places are an abmination to the eyes of European whites who flock there to try to "fix" the black mans problems. That has been going on for a long time now and still the plight of these areas is just as bad or worse then ever before.
Whites cannot fix black problems, GOD knows we've tried. If an entire race of people however decides they want to live a certain way there is not anything whites or any other race can do about it. Yes blacks say they do want fancy cars, nice houses, good schools, good infrastructure and they certainly accept these things when handed to them freely much like any child will accept a piece of candy. What they will NOT do is wake up every morning at 6am and work a long day to maintain them. What they wll not do is preserve these nice things or build them themselves through work and sacrifice. Time preferences matter. Any black kid in Fegurson in grade school could, if he decided too, get good grades and a free ride all the way through University. If he joined the military and followed the rules and showed that he wanted to fit in they would bend over backwards to promote him, raise him up, and kiss his ass to get their quota numbers. The fact remains that blacks do not as a race want to do this and choices matter.
The problem in Ferguson is that the way blacks choose to live and the way whites choose to live are not compatible. Federal programs will not change this. Making blacks live the way whites want them too requires violent repression and constant brtual correction - this was a big reason mass chimpouts like this were few and far between pre 1950. Yes there were many other reasons but the fear in the black community, the fear that whites would turn on them and violently deal with them was there. Not so much now. Now blacks know that they can kill each other pretty much as they want too (and do the world over) without much fuss and take out the occassional white as well and won't get punished for it much. See my friends in jail and get a pat on the head from my friends and brothers in prison for torturing/raping/killing Channon and Newsom - so what.
Now that the money to cover all this up is running out and the artificial supports that buoy the black communities are too taxing for a nation that is bankrupt violence is going to happen. The only way to avoid a massive bloody conflict (whcih the blacks will lose) is to separate them now. Let them live as they choose. What is going to happen eventually is a dark horse rider will appear with a Hitler like message. He'll have the full support of the white community and he'll be damn charasmatic. He'll use the easily available history and he'll ask white America do you want you're son/daughter to be the next Channon/Newsom? Do you want your town to the be the next Fegurson? And the cattle cars wll roll. Please lets fix this and separate NOW before it comes to that.

The part about a fascist-like person coming to power is something I do worry about if and when the collapse finally hits. When TSHTF, you know that everyone is going to look for a scapegoat. Maybe it will be those "greedy capitalists." Maybe it will be those "subhuman blacks/Mexicans". Maybe it will be someone else like those "evil Joos".
The optimist in me hopes we finally dismantle this statist hellhole and let people just live how they want to be. The pessimist in me sees someone attempting to leverage the coming economic crash to bring about a true authoritarian nightmare.

Up through the 1960s, the US was officially an apartheid nation.
The path for many other (more voluntary) immigrants has been up through low skill industrial jobs. Thanks to trade policies, that route has been closed to blacks, many who were left unemployed and inhabiting rust belt industrial centers.

I agree lots of racists around but it goes further than skin color it applies to people coming from what some here feel entiled to considered as lesser countries (France for example but it applies to some Asians countries, etc.).
Now I read some paper lately about a guys named Steven Jay Gould, a marxist, and how he discarded scientists working in the realm of biosociology. The answer he got for Arthur Jensen was a good one, yet feels won over logic.
When it comes to ethnicity we live under the sort of censorship people as Gould have set on science. The thing is that intelligence measuring is still imperfect, lots of factors can tilt the balance one way or another, etc. yet the scientific answer to that matter of fact shold not be GOuld answer (or others => there are no difference between ethnicities) but a clear we don't know we can't tell.
Instead we got the politically correct: it is too complicated to prove one way or another so there are not.
It is one of those fields where scientists can work as freely as they should in a lot of countries. We know some genetic differences between whites, asians and africans, for example white mated with neanderthals and I don't remember which other newly discover human type, so did asians but it seems they mated more than the whites with the newly discovered speccies. African mated with none and may have mated with other sub-speccies we don't know about yet.
See it is complicated, iffy (we are looking way back into time), there groups within groups, etc. and when it gets complicated it is easy for bumb racists to make shit out of serious researches and serious scientific approach. Again at worse scientific response is a big "we don't know /can't tell" not the there are no differences which is politically correct answer enforced even on the scientific community (or its biggest part).

I'll try to explain it so you can understand. NO, skin color doesn't make people violent and stupid with a high time preference and poor future-time orientation. It is hundreds or thousands of generations of selective breeding by differentiated groups, reinforced by geographic separation and local conditions.
Only a total retard would argue against the following: African skin is black because people who had darker skin were less likely to be damaged by the sun, and more fit to survive and procreate, and care for their offspring long enough for them to fend for themselves. White people have lighter skin because northern climates have less sunshine and lighter skin allows for increased vitamin D production in lower light, reducing their dietary requirements, and lowering mortality through illness, also, dark skin confers no advantages in snowy climates.
Now is where it gets tricky, try to keep up. In these different environments, different selective pressures came in to play. Near the equator, plants and animals thrive year round, and are there for the taking by people who live there. Hungry? Go find food and eat it. Nearer to the North Pole, the difference between December and July is stark. If you want to eat in December in Norway, you had better have worked hard enough during the warm months to have a store of food somewhere, and a family to help protect it from those who did not. People who were not good at this, over generations, died of hunger, or were killed for trying to steal someone else's food. If you didn't sacrifice a good portion of time constructing a shelter, you could easily freeze to death.
These things didnt happen to every member of every generation, of course, but that was the tendency. And over hundreds or thousands of generations those small tendencies add up.

I had a very candid conversation with an older black woman at a bar. She even brought it up. She saw a young group of black males dressed in typical ghetto attire. She said, "Would you look at them making all of us look bad." She went on to say that she and her husband worked hard to move out of the slum and into a nice neighborhood. When they first moved in they encountered resistance and racism, but once the people of the neighborhood got to know them they were accepted as good neighbors and good friends. But then the slum followed them and destroyed the neighborhood. Everything they worked for was trashed. Eventually they moved again and had to start all over justifying why they belonged in a better neighborhood.
She said if her people just acted better and tried to make something of themselves there would be no need for the prejudice. It is thier actions alone that are responsible for the treatment they receive. However she said she is worried things have gone too far to be repaired. Fearful that her people will push others too far leading to what happened to the Jews in WWII. That like them members of her race will push people to violence and once that happens the good will not be seperated from the bad.
That woman deserves to be on a pulpit more than any current black leader.

And that question in turn largely hinges on how much of a stake the average member of whatever community it is feels in society at large. Bogota, Gaza, or Ferguson, the key dynamic is whether the mom and pop shopkeeper feels like there is a future. Realistically.
I think there is a big divide in black America in which some have developed such a stake, which was key to Dr. King's analysis and vision. But others have not. And the playing field, well, you can read all about the playing field here on ZH.

Correct. Never read such unadulterated rubbish. Blacks are already drastically over-compensated for their 'contributions' to society. AA and set-asides have resulted in millions of incompetent blacks (a tautology) occupying positions drastically in excess of their abilities. Anyone who's worked with and around them knows this. They should be on their knees in gratitude at what WHitey has given them..at his own expense.

The root of the problem is the welfare state. There's no shame in being poor. If this poor kid had to work to help put food on his family's table, instead of hanging around on the streets with a strong sense of entitlement (and a bad attitude borne of the grievances such handouts engender), he'd be alive today. And there'd be no riots in the street either, for that matter. Just another failure of the liberal economic agenda.
Welfare is an anti-cultural program. It undermines the value of work for the unskilled/uneducated, and presents them with the notion that it is our fault they can't get ahead in life. No wonder the devolution began with LBJ's civil rights and welfare "achievements."

The US was always a sink or swim test bed. That is what made us so great. The cream generally rose to the top. Not in politics, that has always been a den of scumbag opportunists. But in general society, if you worked hard, played by the rules, you had a decent chance of a good life. What were the rules? Go to school, stay out of trouble, don't knock up everything in sight, control and raise your rug rats so they were not a burden or menace. Pretty fucking simple.

The premise in this article is flawed. It implies that there is no justification for the apparent income disparity between the races (and thus justification for anger). The "article" (rant) also contains an implied justification for entitlement on behalf of the poor; that somehow they are entitled to the same standard of living despite not having done the necessary things to achieve that standard. Poor people, whatever their race, tend to make decisions that keep them poor. Who's fault is that? How do you address that? It's as if the author of this dribble thinks whitey is keeping all the black people down. That's bullshit. It's exactly this kind of populist hogwash that fans the flames of violence in the first place.
