Professor Chomsky: To assume that society’s rewards go to those who have performed a social service is to succumb to essentially the same fallacy (among others) involved in the claim that a free market leads to the optimal satisfaction of wants. In fact, when wealth is badly distributed, a free market will tend to produce luxuries for the few who can pay, rather than necessities for the many who cannot. Similarly, given great inequalities of wealth, we will expect to find that the ‘gradient of occupations’ by pay is a natural measure, not of service to society but of service to wealth and power, to those who can purchase and compel. The ties among I.Q., occupation, and social standing that Herrnstein notes make ‘practical sense’ for those with wealth and power, but not necessarily for society or its members in general …

Great post. Amazing number of commies on this site. I suppose few are 100% libertarian here but I am shocked at the copious money (penile) envy on ZH. Last country on earth you can  make something from nothing, but instead of celebrating that fact, I  see many here frothing at their open mouth commentary about how people are not equal in wealth sense.  Almost as if you can legislate wealth from the rich and deliver to self-righteous few who cant separate themselves from their OC self-entitlement mentality.

Don''t most realize that if all the weatlth was forcefully distributed equally within 20 years most of the top 10% would have most of the wealth and the self-entitled would squander whatever they stole have and would become what they started as?

It's amazing amount of energy wasted on worring that many others with the wherewithal to make a buck if they so desire. Money is just a tool folks. No one is equal to anyone in effort and natural skills.  Get over it. If you would put that energy into making a buck the hard way,  you could be reeach too.

The recovery is a NO show because we are past peak growth.

Why do you think we have accumulated debt since 1970, exponentially?

There's growth in debt.   And don't forget,  debt that's just going to be rolled over is really equity.    It's only debt when you can't roll it.

But, most likely as loss, for the equity holders.

If they can't roll: Bankrupted

When rates rise: Insolvent, at best

But, here is the crux of the 'debt' problem. We would still in a death spiral because:

A unit of new debt now produces much less than a unit of economic growth.

Anyways I don't really see things the Ayn Rand way, but whatever.

And yes, I am aware that the terminology was taken and twisted - that von Mises was a "liberal" and that terminology is just fine with me.

Anyways I think Chomsky is fake, and efforts to characterize the "economy" as naturally exploitative are just so much hot air. Nobody needs forced redistribution. I believe freedom to own stuff and to trade as you see fit is wealth building for everyone, simultaneously. Von Mises and Rothbard did a really nice job of reasoning their way through this.

And yes, the idea that free transactions concentrate wealth is definitely a Marxist thing.

(BTW both Von Mises and Rothbard were Jews. Hope that doesn't chap your ass too much.)

Seize Mars,

It's obvious that you don't read Chomsky.

Anyway, you wrote: "Chomsky is fake, and efforts to characterize the "economy" as naturally exploitative are just so much hot air."

Mars,

a) Our economy is exploitative. You can clearly see on inequality.

b) US life standards were built on exploring others nations by sending dollars and acquiring their resources, labor, and goodies.

Then, you wrote: "freedom to own stuff and to trade as you see fit is wealth building for everyone, simultaneously.

What's stopping you of doing that?

Tue, 08/19/2014 - 21:12 | 5117843 Seize Mars
Seize Mars's picture

Escrava

a) Correct, the economy is exploitative and there is an inequality of gains. This is 100% engineered this way, on purpose. The existence of a central bank to control money and credit in a centrally planned way is a Marxist tenet that we are living right now. If we had "equity money" instead of "debt money" then it would be different, and better. That's my point. Here is an excellent reference:

"It Didn’t Have to Be This Way: Why Boom and Bust Is Unnecessary—and How the Austrian School of Economics Breaks the Cycle" by Harry Veryser
http://mises.org/daily/6353/The-Austrians-Were-Right

b) US standards built on a stealth inflation tax of the Entire World wasn't the original state of affairs. This kicked into high gear in 1971 with the "petrodollar." Commodities flow into the US, and pieces of worthless paper flow out. It's stupid and obviously unsustainable. Let's change it!

c) What's stopping me from being free, and trading how I want? There is a mountain of legislation that stops me from trading in gold and silver, or anything else. Between legal tender laws, the tax code, and hundreds of thousands of pages of administrative regulation I most certainly not free. You can get shot to death by a cop in the US for...nothing. We aren't free.

I am proposing that we should be free and that life would be better - for everyone, not just some classes.

I've read Chomsky at length, and found him to be quite the tool.  Much like Escrava, his abilty to speak or write eloquently does not make his point any more valid; although being a wordsmith is surely intoxicating to simpletons.  Chomsky's ideas were just that.  Simplistic and, pardon my frankness, idiotic.  In the practical sense, his writings are as useful as those of Stephen King or Tim Rice.  Just another guy in a bubble opining on a world he never really had to experience.  Ivory towers and such.

When I was younger I embraced idealism.  As I got older, I became more of a realist.  Yet, at none of those stages of personal evolution did I think Chomsky was anything other than a hollow, resounding gong.

borrowed that line from ann coulter? You seem to not understand what libertarian philosophy is. it is centered around the non agression principle. It is immoral to initiate force or threaten to use force against another or their property. thats pretty much it. as such, we envision a very limited role for the govt to play. It exists to protect our rights as laid out in the constitution. That is all. To provide equal OPPORTUNITY not equal OUTCOMES. It is not the proper role of govt to provide us with benefits, health care, subsidies, or control distribution of wealth. and definetly not policing the world, searching for monsters to destroy. Many on here have made the leap to complete anarchism, that any state is immoral. Although I don't entirely agree with that, I won't argue with them. As for the whiny part, we complain because we see what the govt is doing to this once vibrant nation, and how we are being led to an unavoidable collapse of all the bad debts being generated, which is sure to cause  a lot of pain for everyone on this planet.

>policing the world, searching for monsters to destroy

That is still possible in libertarianism. For example, a private security force that secured contracts from enough members in a populace (perhaps something like Kickstarter) would try to overthrow a warlord if it expected a profit.

>any state is immoral. Although I don't entirely agree with that

What kind of state would be moral? A kind that doesn't extract funds from residents of a given geographical area?

http://www.kshay.com/teaiki/glossary/gl.php  (Excerpt)

year2000@infomagic.com was the email address used for Y2K-related online posting
by an especially gloomy programmer (Ivan Mingham). He predicted, with great certainty,
a scenario far bleaker than did even Gary North or other prominent doomers:
a humankind-wide “devolutionary spiral” in which most of the social and technological progress
of the past several hundred years would be undone, leading to a reduction in the earth’s carrying capacity
and the death of a majority of the world’s population. “Infomagic” itself was simply the name
of this fellow’s email provider, but became a both a nickname for him and shorthand
for the level of disaster he described: “if Y2K goes Infomagic” meant “if it’s really, really, really bad.”

The problem is that these are different times and we just can't gauge success and failure from the same metrics of past generations. We live in a new time, one of great sharing and sacrifice for our fellow man. We no longer focus on outdated concepts like income and wealth as today we have acknowledged that "we didn't build that" and "the wealth should be spread around". These modern concepts do not comport with old measures and perceptions. People are now free to pursue their dreams, no need for the drudgery of a job. Just believe that we are all better off than we ever have been. We are the new us, the USSA!

The economic recovery that the media and talking heads have been bantering around does not exist and is just a myth. A manipulated stock market distorted by recent economic policy hides and mask the real truth, in many ways it is ground zero in the war to convince us all is well.

The American people and Main Street will tell you they are far from convinced that it is smooth sailing ahead. Huge weakness in the economy has been shown by numbers that barely get by even after record amounts of stimulus. Fact is if QE or the massive government deficit spending that props up our economy is removed it will fold like a cheap umbrella.

Recent changes in how the GDP is figured , which boosted growth thus reducing the debt to growth ratio, and attempts to spin poor numbers regarding employment have been met with skepticism. More on this subject in the article below.

That's why the smart-n-savvy people aren't going to remove it.    Why removed what works so well for the smart-n-savvy people?

Hell, nobody wants to remove it. we all talk tough here but we ALL know our jobs and future are dependent upon this corrupt circus continuing. This just helps salve my guilt for doing nothing about it. I figure hell, young people don't seem to be paying attention to any of it. Why should I care. Honestly I'm just a junky for it as I find it incredibly interesting. I slow down for car wrecks too.

"During the Panic of 1837 we ate prarie dogs. Probably be eating them again soon."

Black-tailed prairie dogs once numbered in the hundreds of millions – maybe even over a billion – and were possibly the most abundant mammal in North America. But due to a variety of reasons, their numbers have decreased by over 95%. Today, they may number around 10-20 million.

Even Wall St know. They just spins with dubious stats thru their paid sycophants (analysts, economists, etc) in order to sell concocted snake oils that even foreign investors eschew.

There is still a juice left in the pensions and the little savings in mutual funds that can be raided. Wait a minute, should markets dive, there are the coming gates on these funds.

There are still large slices of land not yet Ferguson to be devastated.

Ugliest Moldovan girl I know moved to the US by marrying a retard, whom she later divorced.  (She was going to marry a friend of mine, man did he dodge a bullet).  So far, so good.  Then she married some third worlder and now has downloaded a couple of half-whites, her Hadji works as a computer "expert", she has a job juggling numbers in a corporation in Houston.  Together, they earn about half what I did as a computer jock before being replaced by an H1-B.

In short, she doesn't understand why I left the land of "opportunity," in order to work in Germany, and and thinks that I am an incurable "racist."

I got where I am honestly.  And when she and her towelhead get replaced by even cheaper labor, she just might get a clue.  But I doubt it.

All the third world thinks that the US is a Garden of Eden, while it is they who are tearing it down, bit by bit.

Government.... corrupt beyond pale.
