I use ebay along with paypal.  And I use paypal to pay for a lot of other online purchases.  I've never had a problem, but I agree ebay is shit and I've heard that Paypal uses a ton of money to finance the libtards.

But what is the alternative to it?  Is there another service we can use instead of paypal?  I'd ditch paypal in a second if there was something else that could be used other than hooking up directly to my bank account or credit card, etc.

Yeah, you can take checks as payment.  However, Ebay does not allow checks because they want you to use Paypal.

I've been a seller on ebay since 97. A user of x.com(became paypal) since it started.ebay were whores form the begining, offering only 1 share of the IPO to sellers. Early on x.com gave sellers $5 for each new user you would sign up....sounds like nothing unless you are able to sign up 20-30 users a week who were buying your item anyway. When it came time to go public they allowed user to get in on the IPO, I do not know what the upper limit was on shares (I got 200 @ 13) or if there was one. What I do know is they were egalitarian in the begining. Yes ebay and paypal are wrung out sleazy operations at this point. Paypal didn't start out that way. Bless Peter and Elon, fuck Pierre.

If a government official sold the spin-off plan info to a "consulting" company who then sold its "research" to a hedge fund...it's legal.

More likely that PayPal is going to be incorporating Bitcoin and they know that eBay is going to be replaced with de-centralized market places.  Just splitting the company up into winners and losers now.

I argue that eBay is what they are dumping while it still has value.  PayPal 2.0 (incorporating cryptocurrencies) is here to stay.

The original Satoshi client contained the framework for an online auction system using bitcoin. Like many other functions in bitcoin the code was disabled. Multisig could easily replace PayPal's function , unless these get upto speed they will both be disintermediated.

Too bad to hear about your experiences with EBAY and PP.

I've scored some EXCELLENT deals on EBAY over the past 5 years on vintage synthesizers......

Hell, even a mint current Kurzweil PC3LE7 I grabbed for $700.00

PP seems to work well for me too, allowing me to sell my services across the country.

Good that you have had positive experiences with ebay Duc888. By the way, that was a great model for Ducati. Bact to the point, I have been using ebay and paypal for many years, but much less now. They were both better in the past. Ebay has turned into a den of scammers and theives, for the most part, sadly. Where better to fence your stolen or counterfeit goods? Or dump your broken garbage with "as-is" and "no returns" disclaimers. All their "guarantees" are worthless, as you will find out if you ever need them. My best solution has been to use paypal buyer's credit as a layer of protection. The credit comes from GE credit, now called Synchrony, which charges absurd rates, so you need to pay it off monthly. However, whereas paypal and ebay have always failed to back up their "buyer protection" horse poo, when push comes to shove, a call to GE credit informing them that if I could not resolve the issue through ebay or paypal, I would default on the credit from them, has worked every single time.

It helps to look at the buyer's ratings and terms purchase prior to placing a bid. I've bought on ebay:

  • A car.
  • A suit.
  • Many classical music CDs not sold in the US (thank you UK and Deutchland).
  • Many car parts.
  • Shoes.  A return was accepted as the width was wrong.
  • Clothes.
  • Golfing equipment.
  • I haven't been scammed in the past 10 years.

For the first three years (2001 - 2004) about 1 & 10 transactions I did not receive a good or payment; or I got a defective good that was not refunded.  After mandating Paypal, the transaction consistency improved.  I must say I've received some very good deals.

Part of the eBay scam is actually the predatory buyers.

Buyers can leve negative feedback and sellers cannot.

Your buyer wants added value/more stuff/a kickback and you balk: you get the negative feedback and maybe even have to accept a return shipment at your expense cause the extortionist didn't get everything they demanded.

Used to do a lot of ebay; now not so much...

eBay has its dangers and the buyer needs to be educated to avoid the scams. email also has its dangers so do I quit using email? Of course not. In all things in life Caveat Emptor. eBay has in the past few years switched from a sellers paradise to heavily slanted in the buyers favor. The buyer can file a case if unhappy and will likely win.

I put food on the table running a business of which eBay is about 50%. I don't like the fees of course but so goes capitalism. They render a service, they get paid. I really did not like it when they insisted on an SSN to report my earnings to the .gov. I split off to my own website and started working forums harder to move half my biz away from eBay at that time.

Someone mentioned checks for payment. How 1960's! I'd rather pay the big banks for a CC account.

"What vintage synthesizers did you buy and for how much?"

I got out of the analog stuff back in the 80's....Korg Monopoly...stuff like that.

I bought three EMU Proteus 2000's all under $250 each...and the good thing is they all had the latest OS loaded in them (2.26)....those are gettin tough to find......

EMU Eloader is kinda hinky to run / install latest OS's...

I have a Proteus 2500 purchased for $250 loaded with 4 ROMs....

Mint Korg Wavestation A/D with latest OS....   $300.....

X files TV show music was written almost exclusively on WS A/D.

.....oh yea, just grabbed a Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 Firewire interface about 4 months ago....absolutely mint for like $365 or something, I forgot my offer...

Thanks for that info Toolshed.  I'm gonna look into that.

Off topic:

Yea, my 888.  I don't have it anymore... I got jammed up a few years back and had to unload it.  I could cry.

I was at Daytona the year Polen did three laps on the tri-oval on Sat afternoon practice / time trials....., was clocked at 203 mph on start / finish on lap two after he built up momentum off the turns.....on his 888 Superbike...I think it was 1993, 1994, not sure...

The tire guys threw their clipboards at him as he pulled into hot pit lane... his rear tire was chunked beyond belief on the left side.

Blew out / melted right there as he came to a stop.  My buddy and I sneaked onto the hot pit lane because there was next to no one there at the track at that time... maybe 2000 people or so...

a day to remember for sure..

ebay and paypal... a pair of utterly shit websites which offer nothing of any value.

sure, once upon a time, ebay wasn't horrible.  and once upon a time, paypal was almost worth tolerating.  but now? nothing has changed for the better, only for the worse.  It's as if for the past decade they sifted through all their complaints and fished out the ones that had potential to make more money and went down that path rather than fixing the damned problems.

The sooner Alipay and taobao reach the US, the better... ebay and paypal will just simply cease to exist.

Imagine, if you will, the ability to list items with zero fees and zero restrictions until you reach a certain size of shop? And even then, as long as your feedback stays good, most fees are refunded.  All sellers have been verified by default.

Imagine, if you will, an escrow-by-default payment system which is, for most users, completely free, instant, convenient, offering investment and interest-bearing products that are insured and safe, and is very difficult to scam seeing as every single user is verified.

Now, imagine if you will, that there is an inbuilt chat program which allows buyers and sellers to connect to each other instantly, negotiate, ask questions, and have ALL OF THIS LOGGED by the system and SAVED.

So based on the fact that everyone is verified, complete with government ID scans, headshots, contact information... the number of people willing to try a scam is miniscule.

The biggest joke of ebay is the rating system.  Want actual space to leave actual comments? Nope. Have a complaint? Good fucking luck.  Have a buyer who scammed you? Sorry, paypal doesn't give a shit.  The auction system itself is a fucking joke as well.  Just set a fucking price already, I don't feel like getting raped on your bullshit "buy it now" B&M retail price, and I don't feel like bid sniping for the next week to buy a fucking frying pan either.

djsmps: The Wavestation sounds nice. The rest ho-hum.

Well, the EMU's are interesting...Z plane filters and stuff.  I mainly use them daisey chained together to fatten up some sounds and run one on each keyboard through a line mixer.      I got a slew of Alesis QS 7.1's that I use as MIDI controllers......

The WS is a lot of fun...still a lot left to offer even today.  A tweakers delight (Vector synthesis).

The PC3LE is highly under rated since they upgraded the software and now you're got the full power of VAST synthesis....just gettin my toes wet with that lately, very deep.

But alas, I've seen the light and am running Camel Audio Alchemy and I just purchased Omnisphere.   Alchemy seems to have replicated the Vector Synthesis of the WS A/D very sucessfully and if you have a touch screen it's like you have two WS A/D's there side by side.  Amazing.   I'd never guess that I'd be bitten by the soft synth bug.  Absolutely amazing stuff...provided you have a monster of a PC to run it.

sorry for rambling...
