Obamacare Is A Disaster For Businesses, Philly Fed Finds
Remember all those allegations that Obamacare would be an unmitigated disaster for businesses, especially smaller companies? Well, now we have proof.
As the Philly Fed, which mysteriously soared at the headline level even as the vast majority of its components tumbled, reported moments ago, "in special questions this month, firms were asked qualitative questions about the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how, if at all, they are making changes to their employment and compensation, including benefits."
What the survey found was very disturbing: not only did businesses report that as a result of Obamacare the number of workers they employ is lower than higher (18.2% vs 3.0%), that there has been an increase in part time jobs (18.2% higher vs 1.5% lower), leading to a big increase in outsourcing and most importantly, Obamacare costs are being largely passed on to customers (28.8% reporting higher vs 0.0% lower), the punchline was that while there is basically no change in the number of employees covered (17.6% higher vs 14.7% lower and 67.6% unchanged), there has been a big jump in Premiums, Deductibles, Out-of-pocket maximums, and Copays, which has been "matched" by a far greater reduction in the range of medical coverage and the size of the network.
In short a disaster.
And what's worse, this sentiment will persist long after the current subprime auto loan-driven manufacturing renaissance is long forgotten.

Carter seem to genuinely care about people, which was probably a good part of his downfall. However, he was pretty much clueless as to how to run the government. He also didn't surround himself with much in the way of capable people, which exacerbated the situation. His legacy, the Camp David Accords, came by pretty much bribing both sides and is a price we're still paying today.
Was he the worst? Given the plethora of candidates we have just in the last 50 years, I would say no. But he's right down there with the last two we've had.
Carter would tell you what he was going to do and, initially, businesses would adjust to this, in an effort to remain competitive. Then Carter would change the plan. Businesses stopped making adjustments as you would expect. No jawboning by that president had any effector the economy from then on out.

Obama has a similar effect on personal and business decisions, but mostly because of the randomness of surprise announcements and unilateral actions. You just freeze up with indecisiveness because you just can't predict what's coming down the pipe next.

I'm in the healthcare business. Government has been fucking with us since the 60's at least.
First, in order to "contain costs" back in the 80's they required us to submit for a "certificate of need" before we were allowed to by a CT scan for our hospital....meantime the Other Hospital already had their Certificate and was lobbying the government to deny ours because there was not a "need" in the community since they already had their CT scanner.........that program fell apart and was replaced by price controls and cuts in reembursments to discourage healthcare costs.

The US healthcare system certainly needed reform but the ACA was a step backwards: more red tape, more complexity, more expensive, terrible incentives and more rationing.
Among a million other blunders, no sane person, designing such a system from the ground-up would tie healthcare coverage to employment.

While the US health care system is undoubtedly broken, what is breaking it is the lousy state of health of Americans. Part of this is the individual's fault - making bad choices in those limited situations where good choices are actually available - but the bulk of the problem is the multiple industries that sell poisonous food, beverages, pills, drugs, and lifestyles in the name of maximum profit at minimum cost, leaving the health care system to pick up the bloated, rotting pieces of human beings these industries leave behind. What is wrong with the American health care system is American industry and American government, both of which have a vested interest in creating maximum damage because that is the most certain route to wealth and power.
You act like our system actually benefits and profits from sick people and the debt they often incur to afford care... Oh wait.

How's this for a solution: if you're over 65, on Medicare, and your prognosis is less than a year, you can choose between all life-saving measures (as now), or go to a hospice, be comfortable, and have 50% of the projected savings added to your estate.

Those life saving measures are mostly a fraud, priced at ridiculously jacked up prices. Most of those procedures/meds HAVE NO PROVEN BENEFIT. The studies they are based on are phoney, and approved by an industry captured FDA.
Nobody should be charging more than $500 a day for a hospital bed, or 5 cents for a tylenol pill. When gov gets out of the way and stops supporting monopolistic practices, this crap will disolve away by real competition.

A while back I read MD Anderson and some other big medical centers were not accepting certain O'Bamacare plans. I don't know if that's changed but that stinks for the cancer pateints who need those expensive treatments.

Single payer isn't the same as nationalized medicine. Doctors and hospitals are still private enterprises. There just isn't an insurance company making profits on premiums.

In fact the medical practitioners often fuck it up to make more money fixing their "mistakes" !

The reason medical costs are outrageous is we allow hospitals to price their services *after* being received. There is no standard price list, after you finished they can charge you anything they want. They are allowed to collude on prices of medicine and legally prosecute you if you attempt to import any from abroad where its cheaper which is why some lady in the SouthWest recently was charged something like 10,000 U.S. for scorpion anti-venom when in Mexico it cost $10. Totally legal and encouraged.
Soon we will carry our own medicines and the DRs will charge us an application fee to apply them. Kinda like a corkage fee at restaurants....

Healthcare for over 25 years. There is incentive to get it right first time. CMH refuses payment for any re admit w/in 14 days that number changes. They (CMH) make up denials as they go along. Wrong admit diagnosis? Denial of payment. Wrong code? Expect a visit from the Feds for submitting false charges. Medicaid? Even worse. If they even bother to pay...10 cents/dollar. Flat fee's of 20-30/visit. If that. Payments out for 180-240 days. Illinois? Years out. Literally.
How does one make a standardized price list when over half your "customers" are not paying? (The mindset of public aid patients is; "It's free") And yes, malpractice plays a part. ER visit w/abdominal pain? CT, labs, ultrasound, no insurance. Can't boot them out. Have to follow standard medical practice. Hence all the tests.. ER MD's if they find themselves involved in litigation over 3 times become ineligable for ER malpractice insurance. Only 2 major players left in the ER MD insurance areana...Depending on how billing is in your part of the country upwards of 6-8k for a belly pain, from patient who is seeking vicodin....

Single payer, but with deductible up front ($500 a year per person) followed by a split (80/20) up to a max out of pocket paid by the patient to discourage excessive utilization. Means that most people would pay their own way most of the time for regular things like colds/viruses. Charities could fund the deductible/patient portion for the needy.
Make doctors stick to the set reimbursement schedule for X years to pay back their educational debt. Then experienced doctors can charge more than the set reimbursement figure if they disclose so up front and if their skill/talent will demand such from those able to pay more.
No real reason for hospitals to be for profit.

I provide insurance for my few employees. My agent called and told me to expect a renewal package, but to not open it. I'm used to bad news but he seemed to think this might incite me to violence (I don't know where he got that idea...damnit!). I have a plan that is basically a Obamacare plan...$5000 deductible but no copay. Pretty much a straight major medical with not much maintenance. It is a MSA plan though which helps...but still shitty. Its going up 40% from last year! Whats really great is even though it renews the first of November, I have to make my decision in the next week, or I lose my plan. Nuts! When I asked about just dropping the group plan and giving the money to my employees, thinking they could get a better deal through Obamacare, he says nope. Cost them the same. We are in a box with the sides closing in. Any illusion of choice is quickly fading, with our choices being about as meaningful as a presidential election.
