More Scaremongery: Inhofe Warns ISIS "Developing A Method To Blow Up A Major US City"
Last night it was SecDef Chuck Hagel who warned ISIS was a bigger threat to America than 9/11 and primed the narrative for the next round of defense-spending (and this deficit-boosting, QE-enabling money printing). Today it is Senate Armed Services Committee member Jim Inhofe who told Fox that "we're in the most dangerous position we've ever been in as a nation." While that seems a little bit of stretch (oh and hasn't the Senator seen stocks?) he adds - rather ominously, "they're crazy out there and they're rapidly developing a method of blowing up a major U.S. city and people just can't believe that's happening." But then again, when have we ever needed to 'believe' anything anyway (especially without YouTube clips to prove it).
Senator Inhofe explains...
“ISIS, they are really bad terrorists, they're so bad even Al Qaida is afraid of them,” Inhofe said reflecting on the recent beheading of American journalist James Foley. Beyond the beheading, Inhofe said the current terror organizations are not going to stay contained to the Middle East. “They're crazy out there and they're rapidly developing a method of blowing up a major U.S. city and people just can't believe that's happening.”
Inhofe blames policy decisions from the Obama administration and cuts in defense spending for putting the country in what he calls a dangerous situation.
“He's [President Obama] going to have to come up with something that we're going to do because they're holding another hostage in place and the problem is, the President says all these things and he never does them,” Inhofe said.
Inhofe said he hopes after the mid-term elections there will be more Republicans in the Senate and more of a willingness for both parties to work on restoring cuts to defense spending.

I have had a few situations in my life. I once disarmed a guy with a hand gun. He had a look in his eye when he walked into the bar, and I didn't like it one bit so I stopped reading my book and just watched him take a seat. He pulled out a gun and held it under the table. He was probably just confused and depressed but I didn't give a shit. I remember thinking one very primitive and extremely predatory thought -- "mine" -- then I hit him so fast he never saw it. Broke a chair, turned over a table. Just really fast. His gun was then my gun, and that situation was resolved. I waited for the cops and never heard anything more about it.
Shit like that. You just pay attention doing and feeling nothing at all -- and then you move so fast time stops.
Means I can relax and enjoy the train ride, and be kind to people, and still deal with shit when shit shows up.

Have you ever tried to disarm somebody with a knife that is coming towards you, in a threatening manner?
Normally I'd agree, but he wasn't threatening anyone else at that moment and the police could have easily backed away from him to buy some time to react and talk the dude down. It'll go down in the books as a good shoot, but it could have easily been handled in a less agressive manner and probably resulted in the guy going to an inpatient psychiactric facility and not a morgue.
I understand your point, and it certainly has merit. I can assure that the majority of LEO's don't really want to shoot anybody (some might, no doubt about it). I'm willing to cut these guys some slack based on how they are taught/trained. They will shoot you if you have a knife, and you make one step towards them.
it's not the point, the guy was passive, they did not have to kill him, they Wanted to.
A guy with a knife (not trained in how to wield it) is actually easier to deal with than a guy without a knife since you really only have to deal with one arm instead of 2 if they want to play fistycuffs. A trained law enforcement officer should be able to take advantage of that and have the training to disarm a one armed suspect without shooting them to death. Either close quarters or using something like a taser or collapsible baton to crack them first before they can get close enough to use the knife.
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this matter. Physically closing in on a perp with a knife is nothing to take lightly (especially one that is clearly expressing a will or desire to die). I've rolled with quite a few cops, and precious few of them have any real training beyond what they did at their academy. My background, experience and training simply prevent me from being able to agree with your premise. I have quite a bit of training and experience, and I would have shot the knife weilding dude coming at me too.
The Military/State Dept Dip Sec/Federal agencies/ & most LEO agencies operate on the Force Continuum doctrine. The tool or weapon deployed by the "good guy" is always +1 greater than the tool or weapon deployed by the "bad guy". For example, non compliance escalation of force goes like this; Presence, verbal commands, pain compliance measures, CS/Pepper spray, baton/taser, then firearm as a weapon of last resort. You can zip through the list in a second if threatened with a deadly weapon, which is what these cops did. Knife = deadly weapon, and the appropriate tool to respond with a deadly weapon is not a baton or taser, it's a firearm.
With the militarization of the police, they only employ deadly force...
