San Francisco Bay Area Hit By Strongest Earthquake In 25 Years; Wine Country Shakes - LIve Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

First a drought, then a plague, now an earthquake: if these three aren't enough to help boost California's GDP, then it may be time for Krugman to resign. Oh and prepare for wine prices to become the latest participant in Janet Yellen's inflationary "noise" parade. The reason - images such as this one showing what happens when a powerful quake hits just miles away from San Francisco's wine area.

The red stuff is luckily not blood:

As Reuters reports, and as thousands felt early this morning, an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude, the largest in the region for 25 years, shook the San Francisco Bay Area early on Sunday, waking residents and causing some power outages and minor damage, according to initial reports. NBC Bay Area reports that The Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa has admitted 70 patients but their injuries are not expected to be serious. An office building in Napa was dechunked.

A video from the quake in progress:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter of the quake was eight km (five miles) northwest of the town of American Canyon, on the northern edge of the Bay, hitting some 9 kilometers away from the city of Napa at a depth of 10.8 kilometers. Latest shake map below.

Randy Baldwin, a USGS geophysicist, said the tremor was potentially damaging because it was close to populated areas. He added the USGS was starting to receive reports of some damage in the city of Napa, mostly masonry and some structural damage, as well as power outages.

Local CBS news said that several fires had broken out in Napa, which is famous as a wine-growing center. A safety dispatcher for several cities, including American Canyon and Napa, said there were reports of people losing power. The latest PG&A outage map is shown below:

Police dispatchers in nearby San Francisco and Oakland said there were no reports of major damage.

“Oh I felt it. When I woke up I was lying on the floor. It kicked me out of bed,” said Keith, a man who lives in Napa and who wanted to be identified only by his first name. He said he went right into his job at the front desk of a Napa hotel, leaving his house in disorder. “The house is a mess, everything is out of the cabinets in the kitchen. Dressers tipped over.”

The quake was the largest to hit the Bay area since the Loma Prieto quake in 1989. "It is the strongest quake in a 60-mile (100-km) radius from the epicenter of this quake in several decades," Baldwin said.

Reuters reporters in Oakland felt the quake as a long, low swell that shook gently for several seconds. "It was a shallow quake and there are lots of aftershocks," Baldwin said, adding most were around magnitude 2 range.

The question now is whether the aftershocks, which can continue for the next several weeks and which experts will watch their distribution to determine if this quake happened on a fault line, will morph into something even stronger.

Meanwhile, here is some documentary evidence of the aftermath:

Finally, here is a live feed of the event from NBC:

In '69, when the "Amazin' Mets" won the World Series, they were given a ticker tape parade in NYC. It was an unseasonably warm day. John Lindsay was Mayor and he and his wife were shaking hands with each of the players. As Mrs. Lindsay shook Yogi's hand she said..."Mr. Berra, you certainly look nice and cool in your white linen suit". Yogi....without missing a beat said "Thanks Mrs. Lindsay. You don't look so hot yourself".

California quakes are little league next to those in Chile. On the richter scale, a 5.0 earthquake is 10 times the magnitude of a 4.0 earthquake. In the last year Chile had a 8.2 quake and dozens of 6.0+ aftershocks.

Earthquakes are quite common in California. Duuh!  Most Californians don't even realize how common they are. In the last year over 3200 earthquakes occurred in California. But the fact is more than 99% that happen under our feet we don't even feel.  I was just reading there was one centered about 25 miles away from me about 27 days ago. It was only a 3.3 which no one is going to feel.  Since moving to San Diego County 7 years ago, I haven't felt a single earthquake, but there were probably a thousand that might have occurred under my feet.

What is your father, Tony? Is he a rabbi? Does he stink of the foreskin?

You know how quickly the boys found you... all those tedious sticky fumblings in the back seats of cars... while you could only dream of getting out... getting anywhere... getting all the way to the mi6.

But I have followed with enthusiasm over the course of your repetative comments and ZH shaming. My down arrows never bothered me, but you...  may lack perspective.

Your father, the dead rabbi, figures largely in your value system. I think whatever success you enjoyed in your anti-zionist ramblings pleased you most because you could imagine your father being pleased. But now, alas, you're a bad odor within massad. Do you imagine your daddy being shamed by your disgrace? Do you see him in his plain pine box crushed by your failure; a sorry, petty end of a promising career as a blog-poster? What is worst about this humiliation, Tony? Is it how your failure will reflect on your mommy and daddy? Is your worst fear that people will now and forever believe you were indeed just good old trailer camp tornado bait? Is this coincidence, or are you back on the case of finding zionists wherever they may lie? If so, goody goody. I imagine you sitting in a dark basement room bent over papers and computer screens. Is that accurate? Please tell me truly, Tony.  Regards, your old pal Minge.

Hey cultivader stop smoking so much of your production and get some facts!! Here is an article National Geographic did last week on the effects of massive well drilling in California including increased seizmic activity. Aquifers stabalize areas when they are full. When they are depleted it creates more instability because the area is now empty. Same reason we are seeing so many sinkholes popping up everywhere! Why you you believe a fucking thing the USGS would publish anyway? They turned the meters off in Yellowstone as soon as the Activity got above their comfort zone..

I'm trying to follow the logic here.   The earthquatke is caused by the drought?  The drought is caused by water well drilling?  Drilling for water causes earthquakes?  The misallocation of millions of gallons of water is the problem?  So if the planners of water allocation had forecasted water use properly in amount and specific use then earthquakes in Northern California would not happen?

How did the practice of fracking get passed the Sierra Club, Nancy Pelosi and all the other groups that are against humans doing anything other than breathing and even that action is deemed taxable and harmful?   If it is actually true, the practice of "pumping millions of gallons of water out of the ground daily",  I wonder if the reality of finally running out of other people's money finally dawned on the political elites of the area?   Would that cause them to turn a blind eye to allowing such a disastrous practice?   Monterey public schools have been bankrupt for some time and I doubt it is unique to northern Cali.

This San Fran thing reminds me of an old joke. After the Revolution, the extremists get it together and overthrow the government. Then they start rounding up politicians to execute. A firing squad is convened and Al Gore, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are all marched to a wall to be shot. As the executioners are loading their guns Al Gore thinks, "I've got to cause a diversion so I can get away." He yells "Oh, no. A tornado!" and points behind the firing squad. As the gunmen turn around to see if there is a tornado approaching, Al Gore jumps over the wall behind him and runs away. The firing squad turns their attention back to the two men who are left. Clinton quickly observes how well Gore's ruse has worked and yells "earthquake!". As the firing squad frantically looks for a place to take cover Clinton jumps over the wall and he too escapes. The firing squad resumes their stance and proceeds to take aim at George W. Bush. Dubya, believing that he, too, can create a diversion, frantically searches his mind for another natural disaster to use. Smiling to himself, he yells "FIRE".

Was just there yesterday... More media hysteria. Same old crap. They show a few old, poorly built, known unstable buildings that lost some bricks. The rest of the place is basically unaffected. You won't see pictures of that.

Interview all the clowns with mouths grandstanding in their government costumes. The commie governor (A puppet of the global criminals) declares 'emergency' because cans fell out of the cupboards in some cheap apartment. Run a media psych-op. Whip up fear. Have the helpless serfs kiss the feet of the 'emergency workers.'

Their  answer to warped, out of control government is as always - More Government.

"The latest PG&A outage map is shown below"

Not that it matters, but its PG&E (pathetically greedy egomaniacs), but 'pathetically greedy assholes' works too.

Let me guess, another piece of evidence that Climate Change is at hand and we must not let the "Deniers" stand in the way another moment. We have to get those carbon credits, water credits, and all other regulation that will raise taxes as well as curtail use of all things needed daily for a human to function in today's world.  We just want those that can afford to do so use the resources at their will while those that cannot afford to pay the price will be the ones to carry the burden of conservation.

With the conversion to digital, smart meters etc... the Authority is set to determine exactly how much energy you are allowed to use daily.  When you hit their notion of enough, they will just shut your house down.

My cable company now sends a signal to my tv asking me "Are you still watching TV, hit select to continue"  This is just the beginning and it's quite annoying.  Yeah I watch a lot of TV, especially since being too sick to have consistent energy levels.  It doesn't seem like a big deal but damned I pay money for cable 24 hours a day, not just for a certain amount of time.  I damned sure don't get a refund when my cable goes out for any amount of time!

Yeah,  It was fracking.  It had nothing to do with tectonic plates grinding against each other for a few thousand years.  For fuck's sake, spew your idicocy at your town hall anti-fracking meeting.  Coffee is provided but you'll have to bring your own snacks.

This earthquake appears  to be near the Rodgers Creek fault.  The one to watch however is the northern end of the Hayward fault, which is just to the south of the Rodgers Creek fault.  The Hayward fault has not popped a good one since 1868 and is way overdue.  It runs under heavily populated Oakland and Berkeley.  When it lets loose we will find out how earhquake resistant the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge really is.  I have my doubts.

More plate shifting to occur. It's a good thing to see EBS giving a ten second panic sex warning. No, it doesn't need more taxpayer funding, typical waste of money. Let's move the bar 30 seconds or 5 minutes, what can you actually do too brace for a earthquake? Do you think you'd be able to wrap your Royal Dalton China with the NYT and hide it in a place where the earth's crust will not throw it up in the air.

Stupid liberals always find ways to spend your money with negative results.
