German Security Expert Warns "War Between Russia And The West Is A Real Possibility"

Tyler Durden's picture

"The de-escalation strategy with Moscow has failed," warns Joachim Krause, Director of the Institute for Security Studies, concluding ominously that "A war between Russia and the West... is a real possibility." As Handelsblatt reports, Krause states "we should not deny this reality any longer."

From Handelsblatt (via Google Translate),

The Director of the Institute for Security Studies at the University of Kiel, Joachim Krause, holding a war between Russia and the West for possible, the West should now not clearly show the flag in view of the escalating situation in Ukraine. "A war between Russia and the West, I do not wind up currently, but if the West will not respond with the necessary determination and effectiveness, a war in a few years could be a real possibility," Krause told Handelsblatt Online.

The fact that Russia's invasion takes place in the Ukraine a week before the NATO summit, show that Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin challenged the West generally. "We should set out and deny this reality any longer."

"What we are experiencing these days, is an armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine," Krause said. He referred to the aggression defined by the United Nations of 1974 Then was also to be considered "sending by or on behalf of a State of armed bands, groups, irregulars or mercenaries" as interstate aggression, "if this is of such gravity as to in its consequences a regular invasion equals ".

Thus, the policy of the federal government had failed to hold a de-escalation strategy which Moscow to intervene militarily in the Ukraine.

But, with with US equities a fraction away from all time highs, and just barely below 2000, shouldn't there be no risk of any conflict according to the all-knowing market, which is never wrong?

Meanwhile, Russia And China will dump the dollar, and soon.   China knows if Russia goes down economically, the're next on the hit list.

Besides, China's emerging crisis will require blowing through its reserves to buy maybe 2-3 years.  May as well unify against the Hedgemon USA.

Western politicians want to inflate away the debt.

The BRICS and the rest of the world are moving to a gold monetary system that is stable and where debt can't be inflated away.

The West's policiticians will call for war.

Where does this ugly disdain for the French come from?

Because they surrendered to the Germans in WWII after losing 260,000 men wounded and 108,000 killed during the invasion? Of course, no ...

In fact this ugly disdain and pitiful jokes come from the firm refusal of the French to join America in Irak, in 2003.

But History has proved that the French were right.

Nevertheless the hate of the american warmongers remains still there, well alive.

They have not forgiven the offence, and their stale hate still show through so-called innocent (?) jokes about the “surrender monkeys”.

As for the rest, the French can be proud of their Military History which remains despite these stupid jokes by far the best military record in Europe.

The American hatred for the French has almost nothing to do with WWII.  After all, everyone'S favorite midget dictator was a complete badass.

See, I have two theories;

1) Americans hate countries we have never gone to war with.  Seriously.  Every country we have fought, we have at least a little respect for.  We have never fought the French.  If we go to war, we'll make video games and movies about it for the next 70 years and the jokes will stop.

2) What I find more likely is the disdain by Americans is that the French were world badasses.  A competitor to British rule for hundreds of years just to collapse into socialism and today -- their biggest exports are 1) Tourism, 2) Tires, 3) Cars, for which they lost 0.10€ per 1€ invested.  I imagine if Marie le Pen gets elected and essentially tells the whole world to fuck themselves, all the French jokes will stop and quickly.

Because the French politicans and military leadership were fairly moronic during WWI and WWII, not to mention the abhorrent treatment of Marshal Petain after WWII for following his conscience and doing his best to save French lives after he wasted so many at Verdun. The 'cheese-eating surrender monkey' meme was around long before 2003; it was certainly not new when I was a kid around a half century ago.

The 'best military record in Europe' ended in 1813 at Leipzig. Hell, even the Mexicans beat them. And let's not talk about that little incident in 1879, either. Care to go back a few centuries and try to support that statement? Crecy? Poitiers? Agincourt? Rossbach? Minden? Wandiwash? Villinhause?

About WWI:

While France was fighting since August 1914, the United States entered in the war only in April 1917 (more than 2 years and 8 months later), not to rescue the French (who were not at all defeated in 1917), but because, President Wilson judged it was the US national interest to do it in response to the declaration by Germany of a total submarine war against US ships. The United States came significantly in action (1 division) at the battle of Seicheprey in April 1918 (only 7 months before the end of the war) and then at the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918. They also had a sucessful offensive at St. Mihiel salient in Sept. 1918 ... only an appreciated help, which allowed shortening the war. But, by far the greatest contribution to victory of WWI was from the French, and to victory of WWII from the Russians (in both cases at a high price) ...

BTW, OK, The Mexicans beat a little French and Austrian expeditionary army corps.

Crecy?  Agincourt? : oK, but the French also had some victories as the 100 years war (in fact 116 years) ended by the complete defeat of England which lost all territories on the Continent (except the Pale of Calais).

French morale was given a much-needed boost by the US entry into the war even before the first doughboy arrived, and a large portion of the French army was in a state of mutiny around the same time. And while Petain cleaned up a lot of Nivelle's mess, he certainly didn't keep his promise of 'no more useless attacks". Let's also not forget the Crown's contribution to the mass blood sacrifice that was WWI.

But let's look a little deeper into'the best militatry record in Europe' then, shall we?

  • Gallic Wars: lost
  • Charlemagne's Iberian excursion: left Zaragoza before the job was done, got mauled by Basques on the way home; lost
  • Norman incursion: lost
  • Third Crusade: lost due to running away before even getting to the holy land
  • Seventh Crusade: lost
  • Eighth Crusade: lost
  • Hundred Years War: won after a number of significant and costly losses
  • Italian Wars: lost. Twice. To Italians.
  • War of the Spanish Succession: lost
  • Seven Years War/French & Indian Wars: lost (just counting this as one)
  • American Revolution: credit with an assist, goal scored by colonists
  • French Revolution: technical tie, as they beat themselves
  • Napoleonic Wars: lost
  • Mexican War: lost
  • Franco-Prussian War: lost
  • WWI: technical win, with lots of assistance.
  • WWII: lost
  • Indochina: lost
  • Algeria: lost

And I've even left a few out to improve their record, which looks like 2 wins/2 ties or assists/16 losses from here. Far from the best military record in Europe.

Don't see only the bad faces of the medals.

Here is what explains how the French, surrounded by the Germans, English, Dutch, Italians and Spaniards (among others), succeeded to won and guard the largest country in the very heart of Europe:  According British historian Niall FERGUSON, since 387 BC, France has fought 168 major wars against such badasses as the Roman Empire, the British Army and the Turkish forces. Their track record isn't too shabby, either: They've won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10 times.

This makes France the most successful military power in European history - in terms of number of fought and won …

Since most people completely suck at knowing real history, they fail to realize that the "Anti-French" propaganda and sentiment originates in "historical baggage" from the English-French monarchical wars that went on for centuries.

Although the US would NOT exist if it were not for the French, this was eventually forgotten when the dominant Anglos in N. Am. expanded on the continent.  A person would do well to research and study the culture and -- more importantly -- the Worldviews of these (and other) cultures.

Although "The brain is a terrible thing to waste", it appears that "Ignorance is a great thing to enjoy and propagate" -- if 90% of posts on most blog sites are any indication.

- Gallic Wars- Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.

- Hundred Years War- Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.

- Italian Wars- Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians (no disrespect to Italians)

- Wars of Religion- France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots

- The Napoleonic Wars- lost. Done by a man with great taste in footwear...

- Battle of Trafalgar (my favourite) you and your spanish chums this time.

We have gone WAY WAY too far in the direction of centralization, and the 'central' positions of power, whether it be media, justice, government, have all been compromised.

The only way to reverse it is to decentralize, not to 'find the right person for the job', who could somehow resist temptation and be free of corruption even in the midst of it (the proverbial virgin, reforming the whorehouse).

When speaking, people need to say what they mean and mean what they say.  When listening, people need to hold the speaker(s) accountable for both.  When one, the other, or both fail in these functions, nothing good or constructive happens.

Krause is clearly just another political 'Muppet-on-a-String'.  I hope that his audience is not.

I agree that meaning what you say and saying what you mean is a good principle.

'A real possibility' is actually a standard expression.  Almost everything that can happen in theory should be regarded as a ( theoretical ) possibility, but chances of many events are so low they can be dismissed.  To make the distinction with such very very rare events and ones you better do not dismiss as 'not gonna happen', they use this expression 'a real possibility'.  While you are correct in a literal sense, your reaction is misplaced as the meaning can be derived by the average person.

Back in Cold War days experts came on TV every now and then claiming Russia had secret machines to contol hurricanes, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and pretty much every natural even short of drought. Perhaps we could revive the tradition.

I know for sure there's cloud and hail dispersion technology. Maybe we could dress it up a bit and say Russian planes, or Chinese ones flying over South China Sea had been spaying something into California air. The state dept. could send out a tweet for extra credibility, as twitter now is an Encyclopedia Britannica of truth.

To those who worry about being "watched", there are things you can do to lessen the worry part:

Don't post anything you would not be embarrassed about or could not defend publicly -- if forced to.  This means that you'll have to put some thought into your choice of words.  This is not a problem for most ZHers, but clearly a serious challenge for some.  Which means that many are here to enlighten each other, and some are here to entertain us.

Bottom line:  Fuck the NSA!  Don't worry, be happy.  Don't forget to breathe, step away from that bottle, meds/drugs or keyboard, and get some fresh air and sunshine. (Applies to me also - especially the "step away from the keyboard!" part).

None of this really matters (although I agree one should be clear and not resort to absurdly violent ideas just because the state has become absurdly violent). They have lists for the Raging Grannies or whatever the protest group is called. Singing old songs that could be misconstrued as dangerous is enough to get you on a list. Back in the 60s even Canada had a secret police tasked with keeping names, anyone the least bit radical or related to a radical would be rounded up and sent to concentration camps in the event of serious protests, insurrection, or revolution.

This was 50 years ago, being a relative of someone that went to a protest or a hippie festival meant you were on a list and could be rounded up within hours. Just imagine what it's like now...

Yes, the Belgians after the second world war developed a secret weapon.

Belgium has one of the most beautiful highway systems in the world.  6 lanes of beautiful concrete, completely illuminated at night, and and wonderfully maintained.  They built them so that the next time the Germans and the French want to go at it, the Belgians can open up their borders "Yes, this way, come right on through here, please don't stop, just keep going."

I suppose it could work the same way for an advancing Russian army and a collapsing NATO.  "Yes, please don't stop (shit does anyone know how to say that in Russian)"

No need for a war, winter is coming and it could be a cold one.  All Russia has to do is tell Gazprom to slowly turn off the natural gas spigot for Europe.  Ukraine will have a tough time skimming off gas as it transits through the country if there isn't any gas coming through.  Maybe Obama will solve Europe's future gas problem, he could ask Valerie Jarrett to handle this situation, just like she handled Obamacare's rollout.  Or maybe Obama will pass up being the Wizard of Oz and instead go on a golf vacation in Palm Beach, Florida.

If you just count the number of soldiers and tanks on each side before making your bet, you're doomed to fail. EU should seek a strategic agreement with Russia, but if our loved elected politicians decide to wage war to please the US, I would rather put my money on "our" side (even if the US don't intervene). Tanks and foot soldiers are relevant against dummies like Ukraine, but I have more trust in 50 modern Tiger that in 500 russian tanks... So if there is an armed conflict, I will happily be on the other side of the bet... (and not just because if I lose, we will both have more important problems than an unpaid  1000€ debt :) ...)

Possibility?  It's already a war.  People are still getting killed.  Bullets are flying both directions, RPGs being fired off, combat aircraft sweep the skies....

Already looks liek a war to me.  A war by proxy, perhaps, but a war nonetheless.

Haven't seen Fonzannoon post in a while. Judging by his last comments he chose the drunken blaze of glory vs. the slow fade away. Either that or he is vacationing in the Hamptons/ Fonz if you're out there more power to you brother.

Hope he's not gone, he would be sorely missed.  Probably my alltime favourite commenter, and I've been here basically since the beginning.
