German Security Expert Warns "War Between Russia And The West Is A Real Possibility"

Tyler Durden's picture

"The de-escalation strategy with Moscow has failed," warns Joachim Krause, Director of the Institute for Security Studies, concluding ominously that "A war between Russia and the West... is a real possibility." As Handelsblatt reports, Krause states "we should not deny this reality any longer."

From Handelsblatt (via Google Translate),

The Director of the Institute for Security Studies at the University of Kiel, Joachim Krause, holding a war between Russia and the West for possible, the West should now not clearly show the flag in view of the escalating situation in Ukraine. "A war between Russia and the West, I do not wind up currently, but if the West will not respond with the necessary determination and effectiveness, a war in a few years could be a real possibility," Krause told Handelsblatt Online.

The fact that Russia's invasion takes place in the Ukraine a week before the NATO summit, show that Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin challenged the West generally. "We should set out and deny this reality any longer."

"What we are experiencing these days, is an armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine," Krause said. He referred to the aggression defined by the United Nations of 1974 Then was also to be considered "sending by or on behalf of a State of armed bands, groups, irregulars or mercenaries" as interstate aggression, "if this is of such gravity as to in its consequences a regular invasion equals ".

Thus, the policy of the federal government had failed to hold a de-escalation strategy which Moscow to intervene militarily in the Ukraine.

But, with with US equities a fraction away from all time highs, and just barely below 2000, shouldn't there be no risk of any conflict according to the all-knowing market, which is never wrong?

Hooray, somebody reads!

A few should do it… Read War Day by Whitley Strieber. I’m generally not a fan, but it was a good fictional account of shutting the USofA down with just three.  The point of my post, however, was completely missed… It’s all being engineered… It is social engineering and the first part of the operation is neutering the United States.

I’ve stayed away from blog commenting because of the teenage troll shit that’s now been turned into another tactical strategy in warfare.  These boneheads DO THINK A LIMITED NUCLEAR WAR IS POSSIBLE, and it just might be… at great cost to over 300 million Americans.

There shouldn’t be a wasted word on any of these pages. Share knowledge; that’s all you’ve got.

If you want to know how it’s been working for the last four centuries read:
The Master Game, Unmasking the Secret Rulers of the World, by Graham Hancock and Robert Bauval, published in 2011

You will be quite surprised to read about the ISIS symbolism during the French Revolution.

Need I mention the striking similarities… the ISIS faction of the French revolution had a penchant for taking heads… highly coincidental that the ISIS fanatics in the Levant are now taking heads…

And on the subject of the "PetroDollar".......

Assuming Arguendo it was "Dethroned"........

The World will quickly learn the Value of Stability in the Most Important Commodity in the World.......

Anyone who thinks that Russia and China are going to deliver better results than the US, needs to wake up to reality.

Bottom Line:

The "PetroDollar" is used to the advantage of the US - but No Less to the World as a Whole......

The issue isn't the "PetroDollar" but rather EROEI........

REPOSTED FROM BELOW:

Germany is not a viable nation unless it can secure access to energy supplies that are not controlled by its competitors.  Russia is one historic competitor.

That's what the Ukraine is all about.  It is not about the US.   This is what 'Fuck the EU' Nuland was talking about.

This is also what Georgia in 2008 was about.

Germany has an energy problem.  Germany's decisive point in WWII was when their energy supplies from Iran were cut.

Access to energy was why Hitler concentrated so hard on Volgograd, rather than wiping out the Soviets in Moscow and Leningrad.  It is the gateway to caspian energy reserves and the near east, generally.

Modern Germany has the same problem.

Germany cannot be independent  so long as any particular energy supplier is capable of pulling out Germany's plug.  Because when it is feasible for a competitor to do so, they will use that power to control Germany economically and geopolitically.

German peoples were part of several nations and city-states until the wars of German unification in the first half of the 19th century, when they were unified under Prussia.

If there is no resolution of this problem for Germany, then there is no Germany.   Germany's past, and possibly her future, is like the Kurds, a people divided amongst many nations.

Germany is not a divided bunch of 'city states' or muslim morons intent on hiding their woman under sack cloth and mutilating their privates all in an attempt to prevent them from having any sort of pleasure or freedom. The Germans are a very smart people, albeit poisoned somewhat by socialism.

Germany would not fall apart and, trust me, would find a way to survive.

Honestly don't know much about Germans or German history.  Germans still predominantly identify with the city/region they are from first and foremost and there are huge regional differences in the country that continue from reunification.  Much more profound than a place like the US.  Just ask a Bavarian from Munich what they think of various Germans including their speech, mannerisms, etc. and vice versa.

So you're not German. There's something called the "German soul". Each German native has it and many don't even recognize that it's there. The language is a crucial part of it. No surprise that singing "Deutschland, Deutschland über Alles" is now verboten.

Yes, Germans identify with their region of origin. They are Bavarians, first. Germans second and Europeans third.

The collective sentiment of being and identifying as one of a larger group extends past the borders of the place where a German was born. Depending on who you meet, some will not identify with their city but they will identify with Germany. Some might not identify with Germany but identify with Europe. NONE or very few will want to be identified as an American vasal and especially in this day and age, the German feels they have much more in common with other Europeans than they would ever have in common with Americans.

Do you just make this crap up as you go?  There are still profound differences between Germans even 20 years after reunification and a lot of former West Germans remain bitter about having to continue to subsidize East Germany at fairly high levels. The level of discontent between Berlin and parts of the country is as great as some in the US and DC but it is certainly there too.

German nationalism/pride is also still really strong.  It is just something that Germans don't talk about vocally especially outside of German company and/or close friends in private.

Not sure that you're aware how you're contradicting yourself with the two above remarks.

2) Animosities over West/East subsidies - correct but it's just "noise"

When it comes down to it, 1) supercedes all the "noise"

War is a possibility only because the US has fomented and supported a coup in Ukraine, and subsequently supported the military "anti-terrorist operations" against Eastern Ukraine.  Was is likely if the US/NATO forces don't stop their push for war with Russia.

War with Russia would be nuclear war, no survival for anyone after the long-term environmental consequences set in.

Germans better wake up fast to this.  They don't need US/NATO apologists like this guy blaming the conflict on Russia.  This line of thiniking will get them all killed.

Have you read about where the next NATO meeting is to be held? In the Cardiff-Newport area of Wales!

The two cities (several miles apart) have been ringed with security fences (at a cost of £50 million for the fencing alone). Pus more than 9,000 police officers from across Britain have been drafted in to police the summit. The fenced in areas have entrances for the public to use - BUT from 2am on September 4 to 6am on September 5, all entrances will be CLOSED - preventing many people from leaving their homes, going to work, etc.

Does anyone else think this is INSANE?  For what? 67 NATO officials plus their aides?

Cardiff and Newport are miles from each other, yet for TWO days these barriers will be completely closed off. The CELTIC MANOR (where these NATO officials will actually meet) is even further east of Newport and consists of 3 exclusive hotels: The Crown at Celtic Manor, the Celtic Manor Resort, and the Manor House Hotel - with many 5-star restaurants nearby.

The CELTIC MANOR area was certainly NOT chosen for security reasons, since it adjacent to 2 major highways.

If the security fence alone costs £50 million (about $82.88 million USD), I wonder what thr TOTAL COST (the fencing, police and other security, hotels, foos, airfares, etc.) will be?  Prehaps £100 million (about $165.76 million USD) or even more????

I guess these NATO folks simply enjoy the "high life" when spending OPM ("other people's money") ! ! !

Yes, western leaders and NATO out themselves with what they don't say: they never talk about getting the East and West Ukrainians to talk, they never talk about seeking compromise. They are just gung-ho for war against the population of East Ukraine. In any other country (Syria, Iraq, Libya) the same western leaders have used the scenario of an "attack agaisnt their own people" as justification for air strikes and war. But in Ukraine it's perfectly acceptable...

Why do all the nut jobs on here constanly bring up nuclear war all of the time?  Greatest chance for nuclear war/exchange of nuclear warheads far and away has been Pakistan and India.  Been that way since the late 90s and continues to this day.  Only increased with Modi being elected PM and BJP activities again especially in Uttar Pradesh.  If there is a nuclear exchange, it will be between Pakistan and India over what occurs in the Kashmir.  Still the biggest trigger point to lead to a nuclear exchange.

Americans don't have the appetite and will not authorize their reps to send American troops into Ukraine irregardless of what happens there.  Even after 2 weeks of constant ISIS fearmongering, the polls on resending American troops to Iraq among the American public are incredibly low even among the GOP voters who usually are the most rabid supporters of it.  Polled below 20% and is a complete non-starter.  Only narrow margin of support for airstrikes and even that has been less than 50%.

Similiar polls I saw on sending American troops to Ukraine were even lower a month ago.  Can't imagine American public would support even air strikes on Russians in eastern Ukraine even if the Russian more in force.  US citizens were overwhelmingly against any military support for Georgia and this will play out the same way.

Another ridiculous fantasy on here - Russian troops/tanks could magically roll across Europe and the Russian army would have the logistical support or the numbers to support that.  Russians had serious problems with that when they had redeployed assets in E. Germany and the Fulda Gap would have seen massive Russian armed colums fanning across Western Germany in Bavaria.  Americans largely have those facilities there including in Italy and Belgium and the Russians have more than 1500 miles away.

Putin doesn't want to just do business.  He'll reabsord E. Ukraine to form a land-link to the Crimea and do it one way or another.  Whether it was through a ballot or through military occupation and 'security zones.'  The issue is will Putin stop there and what about places that significant amounts of Russian minorities including any single former Baltic republic and other former Soviet republics.

US did clearly escalate this by fomenting a bogus 'coup' and installing a clearly US-backed gov't in Kiev but Putin has gone to far at this point and invested too much political and economic capital to pull back.

BEWARE of so-called "experts"!

Especially "experts" who attempt to predict future events!!!

This article is titled,

German Security Expert Warns "War Between Russia And The West Is A Real Possibility"

Excuse me, folks, but ANYONE with the slightest knowledge of recents events in Ukraine could accurately make this statement!

I recall just prior to the 1st Persian Gulf War that one TV network employed a "military expert" by the name of Tony Cordesman (a former U.S. Army colonel, I believe). Mr. Cordesman repeatedly warned (with sophisticated graphics) how the Iraqi forces could easily wipe out any attacking U.S. forces by buidling huge sand berms, backed by wide canals filled with oil. Cordesman stated that the Iraqis could stop any U.S. advance simply by setting these oil-filled canals on fire.

When I heard Mr. Cordesman make such statements, my first reaction was to laugh. Was this guy an idiot? No general ever attacks where the enemy expects, especially a frontal assault. Second, such sand berms and oil-filled canals could easily be destroyed by BULLDOZERS, backed up by air and artillery suppport, thereby opening numerous wide avenues of assault. In any event, even an experienced corporal knows that themost successful method of attack is a "flanking" movement and/or "double envelopment" in which one goes around the end (s) of the enemy's line fo defense, then attacks from that end(s) and from behind.

As a hobby of over 30 years I studied U.S. Civil War battlefield tactics (and wrote numerous published articles) on the Battle of Ball's Bluff, the Maryland Campaign of 1862 (resulting in Antietam) and the Battle of Gettysburg. NEVER did I coonsider myself an "expert" on any of these battles: there was always somone else who knew important details I did not and vce cersa. On could read hundreds of books and literally thousands of letters and diaries with first-hand accounts of what occurred (from generals down to privates); and one thing became clear was that NO ONE knew what was occurring at any give time during any skirmish or battle. Further, two important items were always unavailable: the recollections of survivors who chose NOT to write letters or diaries; and the recollections of soldiers killed in battle who never had the opportunity to do do.

There are NO "experts" - only people who may know a little more about a certain topic than you do. Annd when it comes to making PREDICTIONS about future events, it is a "coin toss".

During the Persian Gulf War the Russians were on our side and helped us disable the Iraqi air defenses they previously sold to Iraq, they were our secret allies.

Our venture in Iraq and Afghanistan was and is a relative "cake walk" because they stepped aside and didn't do to us what we did to them (Mujahudeen Stingers).

You can tell that Russia didn't invade because the expert called it a fact that Russia had invaded.

Nobody believes this story.

The 1% don't want to pay taxes to pay for services for the 99%.

I am sure the 99% don't want to fight in wars to protect the interests of the 1%.

Putin will take Eastern Ukraine because he can and because Ukraine is not a NATO member. Nobody in Europe will go to war with Russia over Ukraine. Nobody with a sane mind that is.

Why does zerohedge use this picture of a ferocious bear versus two old men (EU and USA) ?

Does that correspond with the truth ?
