20,000 Pakistan Riot Police Unleash Tear Gas, Rubber Bullets As Protesters Breach PM's Residence, 230 Injured

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: *POLICE, PROTESTERS CLASH IN ISLAMABAD; AT LEAST 230 HURT: AFP

Against the background we initialliy explained here, and the escalation we discussed here, Imran Khan's "Pakistan Spring" has grown dramatically. The former cricketing-legend and erstwhile opposition leader's call for people to take to the streets to demand new 'unrigged' elections has 1000s of protesters breaching the Prime Minister's residence in Islamabad. Along with anti-government cleric Tahirul Qadri, Khan urged peaceful protest but, as AP reports, an estimated 20,000 police in riot gear are blocking the procession using tear gas and rubber bullets. Local hospitals report at least 100 injuries.

  • *SOME PROTESTORS HAVE ENTERED P.M. HOUSE PREMISES: SAMAA TV
  • *PAKISTAN POLICE FIRE TEAR GAS AT PROTESTORS: SAMAA TV
  • *PAKISTAN POLICE FIRE RUBBER BULLETS AT PROTESTORS; 100 INJURED

As AP reports,

Pakistani police fired tear gas at thousands of protesters as they tried to march toward the prime minister's home in the capital on Saturday, blanketing the route with clouds of white smoke and scattering demonstrators.

Police also fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, injuring some protesters, and at least a dozen were taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

Riot police initially showed restraint to Saturday's march but when the crowd started removing shipping containers used as barricades, they fired salvos of tear gas canisters that forced the crowds back. TV footage showed protesters, including women and children, scattering in retreat. Some fell to the ground and dozens were being treated in a hospital. Many, including two children, were shown being treated for effects of tear gas.

Police refused to give any estimates about the size of the crowd that had been headed toward the prime minister's residence.

Police official Farman Ali said the injured have been shifted to a government hospital.

"They fired tear gas shells at us," said Ahsanullah Fakhri, 28, who was bleeding from his leg, as he exited an ambulance with some seven other protesters who had multiple minor wounds.

"I think they are also firing some bullets, I think rubber bullets," he added.

Khan described the police's action against the crowd as illegal.

Now we will show this government, we will call for countrywide agitation and we will jam the whole of Pakistan."

Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan quickly visited the scene to boost police morale.

"A group wanted to capture the prime ministers house and other buildings. We are under oath, and the police as well, to protect the state assets."

Frank, I enjoy your posts but I think you jumped the shark.  Dial back the "let's kill everyone" and take a deep breath.  Nothing is nearly as bad as they'd have us believe.

I heard a rustling in the woods next to me while I was cutting hay.  It might have been ISIL wanting to take my head for a video.  Turns out...  It was just a doe with two fawns who was snorting to get me to move away.

Reality is not nearly as stressful as the MSM or ZH would have us believe.  Everyone needs clicks, and they all throw red meat to their audience.

ZH is more guilty than most in that regard.  It's the poster child of confirmation bias.

Khan has moved in 'chosen few' UK 'priviledged' social circles. No longer married to Jemina Goldsmith, but very possibly a sleeper conscript in the rollout of the Zionazi modelled and executed Global Gulag. Ordo ab Chao in Pakistan? Good luck with that one, in the drone zone.

"Khan's later decision to join politics alarmed opposition politicians and intelligence agencies mainly because of Jemima's half Jewish ancestry, this became a point of criticism especially by Islamic parties who alleged that he was related to 'Zionists'." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imran_Khan)

Everybody always talks about the Middle East and all of the problems there but what legimiately frightens the shit out of me is Pakistan.  It is a 'country' in name only that has a huge and burdening young population, severe resource constraints, a piss poor and largely disfunctional economy, nukes and the capability to deliever them on a regional basis via warhead, schizophrenic and weak political institutions, and a military class that is increasingly disjointed and divided.

India is far from a country to admire for all of its litany of problems but Pakistan is a country that legimiately should concern not only its immediate neighbors including India and China but also the US and Russia.

The danger is greater and more immediate from the Nobel Prize Winner starting more wars than he can handle:

What do wars in Ukraine, Gaza, Syria and Libya have in common ?

by Alfredo Jalife-Rahme

For Mexican geopolitical expert, Alfredo Jalife-Rahme, the simultaneity of the events illuminates their meaning: soon after announcing the creation of an alternative to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, that is to say the dollar, Russia is having to face at the same time the accusation of having downed the Malaysia Airlines jet, the Israeli attack on Gaza backed by US and UK military intelligence, the chaos in Libya and the Islamic State offensive in the Levant. In addition, in each of these war theaters, the fighting revolves around the control of hydrocarbons, which until now were traded exclusively in dollars

I'm amazed it has taken so long for anyone else to write about the turmoil in Pakistan. The country is approaching a crisis and America is more or less powerless to influence the outcome.  It also appears that few Americans care.  What should alarm Americans after all the other recent problems in the region is that tens of thousands of protesters armed with sticks and wire cutters have swarmed into the fortified red zone in the center of Islamabad.

The protesters are calling for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation and the dissolution of parliament. While this all seems distant and unrelevant to most Americans it is important we remember Pakistan is in a position to start World War III. More about the unstable situation in the article below.

The USA has already "influenced the outcome" by
sponsoring the string of military coups in Pakistan & attendant corruption,
pressuring Pakistan to wage an indiscriminate internal "war of terror" on its own population which has killed and displaced literally millions,
CIA and drone assassinations generating fear and hostility against both US and Pakistani governments
and of course, the favorite stand-by of  IMF loans coupled with "austerity" (for the poor)

As do your recent comment and reply:

First bemoaning that others "lack interest",

and next claiming you yourself, though "interested" are unconcerned (i.e. are not opposed) if the US military intervenes

is a somewhat self-contradictory statement meant to portray an (your) imagined unconcern about US military intervention as the moderate "reasonable" (not ignorant) stance.

Advancingtime:The country is approaching a crisis and America is more or less powerless to influence the outcome.  It also appears that few Americans care.

"Powerless"?  Good.

Ummm, count me in as one who couldn't give a fuck.

"At least this is something that could never happen in America... oh wait."

Well no, it's sure not gonna happen using "slingshots".

I'd bet on that :)

Crossbows are much superior to slingshots. You can get dinner with a wrist rocket, but a fishing crossbow is easier. Bring a slingshot to a gun fight. Right.

Whenever I see demonstrations like this my first thought is "What would US gain by this?". Nothing happens by coincidence and stuff like this gets started for a reason.

How much does the US government actually wish to promote a strong, stable (and hence independent) Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, or Iran?  US strategists surely realize that invasion, devastation of infrastructure, foreign occupation, drone attacks, population displacement, alliances with drug lords, and fanning ethnic conflicts under the guise of pacifying “insurgents”, all  hardly serves to promote “stability”.

Controlling resource extraction and marketing, and establishing military bases to intimidate potential adversaries requires subservient “reliable” allies.  A dependent government cannot also be  independent. Neither can it be strong except insofar as that strength is derived from economic and military dependency on the US.  Nor need such a government be stable in the sense of having popular domestic support.
