"Dawn Of Libya" Islamist Militia Group Seizes US Embassy In Tripoli, Holds Pool Party
Probably the 'oddest' headline of the day but in yet another show of disdain towards US military might, the Islamist militia group known as "Dawn Of Libya" has 'secured' an annex of the U.S. embassy in Tripoli. As Reuters reports, the United States evacuated its embassy in Tripoli on July 26, driving diplomats across the border into Tunisia; but a YouTube video showed the breach of the vacated diplomatic facility by an armed group, with fighters seen milling around a swimming pool. A rebel takeover of the compound would now deliver another symbolic blow to U.S. policy toward Libya, which Western governments fear is teetering toward becoming a failed state.

Members of a Libyan rebel militia have entered an annex of the U.S. embassy in Tripoli but have not broken into the main compound where the United States evacuated all of its staff last month, a U.S. official said on Sunday.
It was not immediately known how close the annex, apparently made up of diplomatic residences, is to the embassy itself. Libya has been rocked by the worst factional violence since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gaddafi.
The United States evacuated its embassy in Tripoli on July 26, driving diplomats across the border into Tunisia. A rebel takeover of the compound would now deliver another symbolic blow to U.S. policy toward Libya, which Western governments fear is teetering toward becoming a failed state.
The U.S. government believes the main embassy compound is still intact and has not been taken over, the U.S. official in Washington told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
An Associated Press journalist walked through the compound Sunday after the Dawn of Libya, an umbrella group for Islamist militias, invited onlookers inside.
Windows at the compound had been broken, but it appeared most of the equipment there remained untouched.
A commander for the Dawn of Libya group said his forces had entered and been in control of the compound since last week.

PGR88: I don't know either, but here's my working theory. Libya has been a major energy supplier to Europe. China made a lot of investments in oil export infrastructure in the East of the country. Gadhafi had never been compliant to the West. He was talking about using Libyan oil wealth to set up a Pan-African bank to get the World Bank/IMF out of Africa. He was making noises about accepting currency other than US Dollars for oil.
The Islamic militant bit is a smokescreen in the theory. They're just the ones available for the purpose. In Ukraine it's Nazis, but the overall strategy is the same.
The idea is to prevent any other entity from becoming a challenge to US supremacy. This includes China, Russia, and the EU. Causing chaos all around the perimeter of those areas forces them to use up a lot of their wealth, energy, power and attention on that nearby instability. Creating that chaos where there's energy, and on the routes that energy has to travel to market, gives the nation best able to project force anywhere on the globe the advantage. That, of course, is the US.
Should the US have a compelling reason to control the area, a we have the military ability to do it; at least securely enough to get the energy flowing. It gives us, and our proxies, control over the energy spigot to potential rivals.
By the way, these are our guys. We've been supporting them for years. We brought in outside mercenaries to reinforce them on the ground, while we provided air power, to take out Gadhafi, chase out the Chinese, and bring a major supplier of energy to Europe into our control. Then we took many of our guys out of Libya and sent them to Syria, about the time that war got big enough. Now they're the main force of what we're calling ISIL. These guys are very useful because they're incredibly violent, they can't surrender because anybody would just kill them in that case, and they are too unpredictable to form a stable society that can't be manipulated or disposed of when it would suit us.
It's no coincidence that it's only been since we killed Gadhafi that Boko Haram suddenly became competent, better armed and coordinated. And look where any pipeline from Nigeria to Europe would have to traverse? Either Libya or Algeria, where there have been some mysterious "Islamist" attacks on remote outposts near the Libyan border.
The theory is, we benefit, by beggaring our neighbor/rivals. And should we want to, we double-cross our proteges and do as we see fit with the resources.
That's just my guess. But it seems to fit the whole Kissinger/Wolfowitz/Brzezinski worldview.

* Libya has been the supply base for the jihadis sent to take out Syria,
* Israel benefits because Qaddafi had significant diplomatic support in the rest of the Arab world. At this point there is almost ZERO effective diplomatic opposition to the Israelis anywhere.
* Instability abroad can be used to create fear at home, and PNAC/neocons believe you can never have enough of that.
You cannot approach this in terms of rational thought or in terms of governments.
* Politicians are great at influencing people. Unfortunately, by and large they are also more stupid than a box of rocks. They do not know history, math, chemistry, biology, meteorology, physics, or any other fact-based discipline. Individually and jointly they are incapable (with remarkably few exceptions) [x] of analysis or independent critical thought once they get past "what's in it for me".
* Governments are a collection of factions, not a cohesive whole. As power grows and existential fear eases, more people look out for themselves and their "sub-tribe" rather than the common good. That could easily include making deals with ideologically compatible groups in other countries at the expense of the common good of all countries.
