Ukraine Defense Minister Warns Of "Worst Conflict Since WWII", Shifts Forces To "Combat Full-Scale Russian Invasion"

Tyler Durden's picture

Unless they are tilting at windmills, the rhetoric this morning from Ukraine's defense minister is the strongest and most actionable yet. Via his Facebook page, Valeriy Galetey accused Russia of "open aggression," and explained that:

  • *RUSSIA SHIFTED TO 'FULL-SCALE' INVASION OF DONBAS, GELETEY SAYS
  • *UKRAINE HALTS ATTEMPTS TO DISLODGE REBELS: DEFENSE MINISTER
  • *UKRAINE SHIFTS FOCUS TO HALTING RUSSIAN INVASION, GELETEY SAYS

Earlier in the morning, US Senator Bob Menendez said he has "no doubt Russia has invaded Ukraine," and following Ukraine requests for assistance from Europe and US, NATO responded by noting a reaction force or 3-5,000 can be ready in 48 hours.

First, Barroso claims Putin 'blackmailed' Europe...

Jose Manuel Barroso, who has just heard Putin. He says that when he asked about the military boundless in Ukraine, the Russian leader went to the threats: "The problem is this," according to Barroso, "if I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks." As if to say, do not provoke me to anger with new sanctions.

Then the US chimes in...

  • *U.S. SENATOR ROBERT MENENDEZ SPEAKS IN KIEV
  • *UKRAINE NEEDS ASSISTANCE FROM EU, U.S., MENENDEZ SAYS
  • *UKRAINE-NATO ASSOCIATION IS A LONG-TERM PROSPECT, MENENDEZ SAYS
  • *UKRAINE-NATO PARTNERSHIP PACT WOULD BE A GOOD STEP: MENENDEZ
  • *UKRAINE NEEDS WEAPONS TO DEFEND ITSELF, MENENDEZ SAYS
  • *MENENDEZ SAYS HE HAS NO DOUBT RUSSIA HAS INVADED UKRAINE

Then NATO responds...

  • *NATO'S REACTION FORCE TO BE DEPLOYABLE IN 48 HOURS: OFFICIAL
  • *REACTION FORCE TO BE AGREED BY NATO LEADERS AT SEPT. 4-5 SUMMIT

  • *NATO FORCE SPEARHEAD MAY BE 3,000 TO 5,000 TROOPS: OFFICIAL

And then Ukraine steps it up...

  • *RUSSIA SHIFTED TO `FULL-SCALE' INVASION OF DONBAS, GELETEY SAYS
  • *UKRAINE HALTS ATTEMPTS TO DISLODGE REBELS: DEFENSE MINISTER
  • *UKRAINE SHIFTS FOCUS TO HALTING RUSSIAN INVASION, GELETEY SAYS
  • *UKRAINE WARNS ON BIGGEST CONFLICT IN EUROPE SINCE WORLD WAR II
  • *UKRAINE ARMY SAYS REBELS BEING REPLACED BY PROFESSIONAL TROOPS

*  *  *

Seems like the right time to be buying US stocks..?

Trouble is that Putin doesn't even want Donbass or Luhansk. Both would be a massive drain on the Russian economy just like they are on the Ukraine economy. Owning either region is like owning Detroit in the 80's; both are slow-motion economic train-wrecks that are going to be overflowing with pensioners.

Reichminister Nuland isn't interested in rescuing the economy of either region and she couldn't give a rat's ass about the soon to be permanently unemployed blue-collar factory workers. It's all about a parking lot for the U.S. anti-ballistic missiles (with a few pointed at Moscow, of course).

The massive blunder the U.S. made was assuming that the Ukrainian people would be docile sheep lapping up the western media line. This was suppose to be a push-over for the current round of psychopathic Jewish Ukrainian oligarchs establishing their power bases and taking their turn screwing the Ukrainians out of everything.

NATO isn't coming to save any Ukraine people. It serves the same purpose at the DHS serves in the United States: to save the government oligarchs FROM the people.

Ukraine now has the most dangerous population on earth: Nothing to look forward too and nothing to lose. Killing their oligarchs will solve nothing, but at least they'll have something to celebrate.

Markets aren't reacting because those in the know understand that if Russia wants Ukraine, they can have Ukraine. However, if Russia decided to go further than Ukraine, which they won't, then NATO protection treaties come into play and things go south quickly. Russia needs a buffer between themselves and NATO and Ukraine is it.

Billy, the "carrot" incentives you mentioned may play some role ... but the more effectiove, "stick" components - compromising pictures/tapes etc. are far more effective in permanently motivating and manipulating these puppets.

Anyone remember that somewhat brief-lived episode of "foot tapping" in the men's bathroom that temporarily de-railed Idaho senator Craig a few years back? His arrest had actually ocurred several months prior.  Whatever then-contemperaneous perfidy was afoot (pun intended), we may never know ... suffice to say every individual in an authoritative position in DC - and elsewhere - is compromised and able to blackmailed on an as-needed basis.

The democrats (and republicans) saw an opportunity to advance their political careers by being pro-war. E.g. why else would Hillary Clinton endorse the war ?  They knew that with Bush already committed to ousting Hussein, they could gain politically by rubber-stamping a foregone conclusion. It is most shameful that the well calculated  self-interests of dirty polititians (be they democrat or republican) supercedes the best interests of the american people. And it is that mentality (that cancer) that must be purged from Capitol Hill if we are to survive as a nation.

Hey, zzz, I do not know if that list includes the active duty US military personnel killed - such as two star general Randy Key, who was killed in late July.

There are reports that 180 US special operatives have been sent to the Ukraine on specific missions, identified by the GRU, and clearly warned through back channels to cease and desist activites immediately or face extreme sanctions.

Supposedly the killing of said US military personnel - including General Key - is well underway.

As long as they keep the ball in the enemy court and others killing themselves, is a win-win situation always, the house will win no matter what, this fundamental strategy is so clear and simple.

Ukraine is desperate, so is the fascist/Nazi regime as its coming close to winter and the nordstream will be done soon if they don't do something drastic. This is utter desperation from these criminals now. I think for the good guys, our job is to get the word out about these criminals and to stop any further escalation of war. Humanity does not deserve to continue to be sheep and controlled by these thugs.

It would seem that the Svoboda-infested regime is losing the war now and there is no way to hide it, hence the  urgency to  "do something". Therein lies the rub, i.e. what would that something ential? More sham sanctions? Threats of nuclear war? The only solution would be to let the Donbass people have full autonomy with linguistic rights and the ability to have a large measure of self-government. Failing that, independence or  a quasi-independent "South Ossetia" style arrangement would seem to be the ultimate solution.

In a word,  the Kiev regime should give the people in Donbass home rule or they will ultimately lose the richest region of the Ukrainian state. What idiots (for not doing that or for following dictats of their real masters)

-

(Reuters) - Ukraine said Russian tanks had flattened a small border town and pro-Russian rebels had made fresh gains in its east, as EU leaders signaled on Saturday they would threaten more sanctions against Moscow over the crisis.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, attending an EU summit in Brussels, said he was hoping for a political solution, but warned that his country was on the brink of full-scale war.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed accusations from Kiev and Western powers that it has sent soldiers into its neighbor, or supported pro-Russian rebels fighting a five-month-old separatist war in Ukraine's east.

But Ukraine military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told journalists in Kiev that Russian tanks had entered the small Ukrainian town of Novosvitlivka on the border with Russia and fired on every house.

"We have information that virtually every house has been destroyed," Lysenko added, without giving details on when the reported attack took place. Ukraine's daily military briefings typically cover the previous 24 hours.

Lysenko said the rebels had made new gains just east of the border city of Luhansk, one of the rebels' main strongholds, after opening up a new front in another area last week.

"Direct military aggression by the Russian Federation in the east of Ukraine is continuing. The Russians are continuing to send military equipment and 'mercenaries'," Ukraine's defense and security council said in a separate Twitter post.

Kiev and Western countries say recent rebel gains were the result of the arrival of armored columns of Russian troops, sent by Russian President Vladimir Putin to prop up a separatist rebellion that would otherwise have been near collapse.

There was no immediate fresh comment from Russia on Saturday. Putin on Friday compared Kiev's drive to regain control of its rebellious eastern cities to the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in World War Two.

"NO TIME TO WASTE"

EU leaders meeting in Brussels appointed Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as president of the European Council, giving hawkish Kremlin critics in Eastern Europe new influence in the bloc.

According to a draft statement from the summit, the EU leaders were set to ask the European Commission and the EU's diplomatic service "to urgently undertake preparatory work" on further sanctions that could be implemented if necessary.

French President Francois Hollande stressed that a failure by Russia to reverse a flow of weapons and troops into eastern Ukraine would force the bloc to impose new economic measures.

"Are we going to let the situation worsen, until it leads to war?" Hollande said at a news conference. "Because that's the risk today. There is no time to waste."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the EU was prepared to toughen sanctions against Russia but also that it wanted a political deal to end the confrontation.

"We are ready to take very strong and clear measures but we are keeping our doors open to a political solution," Barroso said at a news conference with Ukraine's president.

Poroshenko said the crisis was close to a tipping point.

"I think we are very close to the point of no return. The point of no return is full-scale war, which already happened on the territory controlled by separatists," he said.

He added, however, that a trilateral meeting on Monday involving representatives of Kiev, Moscow and the European Union could produce a ceasefire.

SHOTS FIRED

The crisis started when Ukraine's Moscow-backed president was ousted by street protests in February after he ditched a pact with the EU that would have moved the ex-Soviet republic firmly toward Europe and away from Russia.

Russia denounced the pro-Western leadership that took over as "a fascist junta" and went on to annex Ukraine's Crimea peninsula. Pro-Russian separatists then rebelled in Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking east in April, setting up 'people's republics' and declaring they wanted to join Russia.

A senior U.N. human rights official said on Friday nearly 2,600 civilians, Ukrainian government forces and rebels had been killed in a conflict which has led to the biggest Russia-West crisis since the Cold War.

In Kiev, Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said a group of pro-Ukrainian fighters had broken out of encirclement by pro-Russian rebels near Donetsk early on Saturday, though other reports suggested many remained trapped.

Defense Minister Valery Heletey also ordered a clamp-down on information coming out of Ilovaysk, a town to the east of Donetsk.

Indicating government forces were being pulled back from the area, Heletey said on his Facebook page: "As soon as the danger for Ukrainian units has passed, all open information for the current period relating to the withdrawal of forces from Ilovaysk will be published."

Last week pro-Russian rebels opened a new front in a separate, coastal territory along the Sea of Azov and pushed Ukrainian troops out of the town of Novoazovsk. They are now threatening the strategic port city of Mariupol.

Several shots were fired on Saturday at a car carrying Alexander Zakharchenko, leader of the breakaway Donetsk People's Republic, but he escaped unscathed, another separatist leader, Sergei Kavtaradze, told Reuters.

"Zakharchenko wasn't hurt. His driver was wounded and is being operated on," Kavtaradze said, adding that an operation was under way to catch whoever had fired the shots.

A hundred Ukrainian troops have been killed after Russian troops opened fire on the humanitarian corridor championed by Vladimir Putin last week.

A further 85 troops were wounded after the bombardment by Russian artillery near the city of Illovaisk. Many have lost legs and arms in the explosions.

"There are very deeply wounded people. Guys say that they were going through the humanitarian corridor, but they got shot by Russians and their mercenaries" says Iryna Geraschenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko.

It is thought that the Ukrainian troops belonged to the 28th, 39th, 40th and 51st brigades.

To ease the pressure on the doctors in Illovaisk, many of the wounded troops will now be conveyed to Kiev's military hospital, according to Ukrainian activist Arsenij Finberg - who made a plea for volunteers via Facebook.

The humanitarian corridor was set up at the insistence of Putin, who urged the rebels fighting in the Donbass to allow the trapped Ukrainian troops to escape.

"I call on the rebel forces to open a humanitarian corridor for the Ukrainian troops who are surrounded, so as to avoid unnecessary casualties and to give them the opportunity to withdraw from the zone of operations," Putin said in a statement published by the Kremlin on Friday.

Elsewhere, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has told a meeting in the Belarus capital, Minsk, that an "immediate ceasefire" is Russia's priority and in the interest of both sides.

Ukrainian forces have also withdrawn from Luhansk airport in the restive eastern region after firefights with pro-Russian separatists.

The massing of thousands of Russian troops on Ukraine's border and reports of Russian incursions into Ukraine have put a spotlight on Moscow's intentions in the post-Soviet states bordering the member states of the Nato military alliance.

UN agencies estimate that more than 2,000 people have been killed in the fighting between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military since April.

NATO does those exercises on a regular basis.  I participated in some of them years ago.  The most disorganized mess I have ever seen.  No one seemed to know what we were supposed to do.  Afterwards I was briefed that I was not allowed to divulge the details to anyone because the information was secret.  When I asked just what in particular was secret, I was told that if they told me they would have to put me in jail.  Not kidding. I almost laughed out loud.  It might be better today but I doubt it.

johnmack ... as per your 'operatives in Kiev' comment, there are some very good reasons to plausibly explain Yanukoviych's fleeing Kiev immediately following the coup.

With all the potential scenarios being rolled out (russia seeking a land bridge to Crimea, Russia attempting to incorporate all the lands bordering the Black Sea, etc.), I have yet to see mention the admittedly ludicrous-sounding option of restoring some semblance of a then-legitimately elected Yanukovych led government.

At the very least, an observer has to recognize the differences in status between a Gadaffi and Hussein type demise (one executed after a rifle butt shoved up his ass, the other with - supposedly - his head being severed after his being hung), and Yanukovych sitting ensconced in a faraway dacha watching events.

Great Game level stuff.   Interesting times indeed.

No what it means is that Ukraine learned from their Polish neighbors in the last war. Try to hold everything at once and you hold onto nothing in the end. Mobile forces in strength is the only way to stop the Russians and what they are doing. By keeping the number of russian armor and mechanized units small you can easily turn battles with plausible deniability of forces in action.

To me the sad part is that every time I keep thinking things will simmer down, I then realise USA and Europe are in such a dire economic state, they have nothing to lose from engaging in war.

So many pro- Ukrainians supporters in various forums and websites are so blindly confident that China would not actually support Russia militarily if push comes to shove. I dont know but at the very least, Russia ‘s other strategic ally Iran would carry out its threat of blocking the Strait of Hormuz. They have already said, not a single drop of oil will pass out of the channel (not that Russia cares about that). But how are these warmongers in Europe and America going to survive without plentiful and cheap oil?
