When A Marketing Campaign Goes Horribly Wrong

Tyler Durden's picture

It has been a bad year for Malaysian Airlines: following the disappearance of MH-370 (which to our knowledge still hasn't been found), and the crash of MH-17 (which to our knowledge still hasn't had its Kiev ATC recordings released) the country's national carrier reported it would be delisted, and nationalized, with a follow up report last week that some 6,000 workers would be laid off to enjoy the recovery "confirmed" by the market's all time highs on their own. The year not only got worse, but outright bizarre, macabre and morbid following a marketing ploy revealed last week in which would-be passengers were given a chance to win a ticket if only they shared their... bucket list?

According to the Malay Mail, reported by Time, Malaysia Airlines launched a competition in Australia and New Zealand four days ago, according to media reports, in which it said it was giving away free economy-class tickets and free iPads. The competition name was, to say the least, bizarre: My Ultimate Bucket List. Contestants had to explain “What and where would you like to tick off on your bucket list?”

Where this goes from here hardly needs an explanation but here goes:

The Merriam-Webster definition of bucket list is “a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying.” The association is horrific, given that 537 people lost their lives flying on the airline this year.

The contest appears to have since been withdrawn, with the original competition link now leading to a 404 error page. A PDF of the competition terms and conditions could be found here at time of publication, but besides that there no longer appear to be details of the competition on the MAS site.

The launch of the competition was picked up in the Australian travel-industry press and even name-checked in British tabloid the Daily Mail. But perhaps MAS has since realized that asking prospective passengers to think up a bucket list before accepting a free ticket on one of its planes might be construed as macabre.

This is not the first such tragedy related gaffe out of the Pacific Rim: "in 2003, the Hong Kong Tourism Board ran an ad promising would-be visitors that “Hong Kong will take your breath away.” At the time, SARS — severe acute respiratory syndrome — had killed about 100 people, mostly in Hong Kong and China. But the ad ran in British and European print magazines — and there was no time to change the slogan before the presses started to roll."

That said, in a world in which fading celebrities need a massive "cloud" hacking to rekindle their idle glory, it would not be at all surprising if as this marketing gimmick goes viral, that traffic yearning for a flight on board the Malaysian airline will soar, and not just thanks to jihadist suicide bombers.

[Bush's] trouble increased dramatically a year ago when Bush — along with former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and several other top Bush administration officials — were convicted of war crimes in absentia by a special war crimes tribunal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal was convened and conducted according to internationally recognized procedures and rules of evidence, and the week-long hearing ended with the five-member panel unanimously delivering guilty verdicts.

Any airline dumb enough to buy Boeing sort of gets what they deserve.  Boeing has ground control takeover on most of their newer jets 767, 777, 787, newer 747 and 737.

So planes can take detours to Diego Garcia and drift over war zones in the Ukraine.  Lufthansa is the only airline that has demanded and been grants no En Ess Aye ground control over their Boeing planes.

I would hardly consider Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton as "fading celebrities"  In fact no one on that list can be considered "fading"  Not a household name, yes, but fading no.   (And even "not a houshold name" is not appropriate as a good portion of that list are stars that are geared toward the teener generation; way out of the ZH audience.)

why not ask mr rolls and mr royce.

you see in engerlund engerlund an office exists an office that tracks and checks data from aeroplane engines.

simply amazing levels of data so much so they can contact an airline and specify exactly any problem or service issues with these heavily used engines, grounding informing highlighting actions needed. a complex internet of everything from sensors all over these engines.

deep within those engines a gps system exsists within the engine block, all rolls royce engines have a computer generated 3d mapping systems plotted in the uk tracked in real time via sattelite init.

the plotting and 3d mapping is really a work of art walt disney and stanley kubrick would be impressed at the quality of the information and the renderings i tell you.

all malay planes with rolls royce engines are plotted and tracked the question should be why this intel inforamtion was not released

Any chance that Malaysian Airlines can create a "bucket list" for the entire U.S., U.K. Israel and EU government official(s) and all the agencies that support them including the IMF for an all expense paid "one way ticket" to the tropical paradise of the newly discovered island of Eyjafjallajökull?!!!

From the letter sent to President Putin:

Dear Mr. President Putin,

Please accept our apologies on behalf of a great many people here in the Netherlands for our Government and our Media. The facts concerning MH17 are twisted to defame you and your country.

We are powerless onlookers, as we witness how the Western Nations, led by the United States, accuse Russia of crimes they commit themselves more than anybody else. We reject the double standards that are used for Russia and the West. In our societies, sufficient evidence is required for a conviction. The way you and your Nation are convicted for ‘crimes’ without evidence, is ruthless and despicable.

You have saved us from a conflict in Syria that could have escalated into a World War. The mass killing of innocent Syrian civilians through gassing by ‘Al-?Qaeda’ terrorists, trained and armed by the US and paid for by Saudi Arabia, was blamed on Assad. In doing so, the West hoped public opinion would turn against Assad, paving the way for an attack on Syria.

Not long after this, Western forces have built up, trained and armed an ‘opposition’ in the Ukraine, to prepare a coup against the legitimate Government in Kiev. The putschists taking over were quickly recognized by Western Governments. They were provided with loans from our tax money to prop their new Government up.

The people of the Crimea did not agree with this and showed this with peaceful demonstrations. Anonymous snipers and violence by Ukrainian troops turned these demonstrations into demands for independence from Kiev. Whether you support these separatist movements is immaterial, considering the blatant Imperialism of the West.

Russia is wrongly accused, without evidence or investigation, of delivering the weapons systems that allegedly brought down MH17. For this reason Western Governments claim they have a right to economically pressure Russia.

Western-created and -supported terrorist groups have become just what we predicted, a self-manufactured security threat.

We, awake citizens of the West, who see the lies and machinations of our Governments, wish to offer you our apologies for what is done in our name. It’s unfortunately true, that our media have lost all independence and are just mouthpieces for the Powers that Be.

Because of this, Western people tend to have a warped view of reality and are unable to hold their politicians to account.

Our hopes are focused on your wisdom. We want Peace. We see that Western Governments do not serve the people but are working towards a New World Order. The destruction of sovereign nations and the killing of millions of innocent people is, seemingly, a price worth paying for them, to achieve this goal.

We, the people of the Netherlands, want Peace and Justice, also for and with Russia.
We hope to make clear that the Dutch Government speaks for itself only. We pray our efforts will help to diffuse the rising tensions between our Nations.

Sincerely,

Professor Cees Hamelink

This is the latest on MH17. Interim report 'within weeks' and final report '12 months'. The BB analysis has been with the Dutch for about 4 weeks.

Clearly nothing of benefit for the US/NATO or else it would have been all over the press ahead of tomorrow's NATO meeting as a good excuse to hit the Russians, rather than unsubstantiated troop invasions, sorry incursions.

MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) — It will take about a year to compile the final report on the causes of the Malaysian Boeing crash in eastern Ukraine, a spokeswoman for the Dutch Safety Board that heads the investigation told RIA Novosti Tuesday.

“I think it will take about a year to complete the whole investigation. I think that in summer 2015 we will publish the report," spokeswoman Sara Vernooij said, adding that the board conducts its investigation in full compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules.

“There are also rules [on] how you have to bring the concept of this report to the other countries that have interest, and they have 60 days to look at the concept of the final report, and then we have to work out the critic on the report," she said.

A preliminary report is expected to be made public in the coming weeks.

“It isn’t a final report, it won’t contain all the questions, but it will tell you the first result of black boxes, some information we get from other sources like satellite and radar and that kind of data. And it is really the first consolidated information about this investigation. But a lot of questions will still be there after reading," the spokeswoman said.

On July 17, a Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in the Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk, where the military operation between Ukrainian Army and independence supporters is ongoing.

None of the 298 people on board survived in the crash.

The reason for the crash is a matter of debate, as Ukrainian authorities claim the independence supporters of the eastern regions shot down the plane, but the latter say they do not possess the means to hit a target flying at the height of the plane.

The United States and a number of European leaders support Kiev’s claim, while the Russian Defense Ministry pointed out that a Ukrainian fighter jet was detected near the Malaysian aircraft shortly before it crashed.

Earlier in August, Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said that a preliminary report on the black box findings from the MH17 crash is expected to be handed over to the United Nations in September.
