Russia Slams Barroso Over Leaked "Take Kiev In 2 Weeks" Comments, Revises Military Doctrine

Tyler Durden's picture

As we discussed yesterday, Vladimir Putin's apparent 'threat' to EU's Barroso that "If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks," prompted both anger and response as NATO reacted by stating a new "spearhead" force of 3-5,000 troops would be flown in to combat any (further) Russian aggression. However, Russia is not happy that the EC President leaked the conversation with Putin's aide Ushakov stating that recounting the private conversation was "inappropriate," "undiplomatic," and "unworthy of a serious political player." More troublingly, the cold-war-tension-like escalation from NATO has prompted Russia to revise its military doctrine to account for “changing military dangers and military threats.”

As The Telegraph reports,

Vladimir Putin has boasted to European leaders that his forces could sweep into Kiev in two weeks if he wanted.

The Russian president reportedly made the threat to the European Commission president during talks on the Ukraine crisis.

Mr Putin told Jose Manuel Barroso: “If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks,” Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper reported, implying this could be the result if the EU stepped up sanctions against Russia.

His comments, relayed by Mr Barroso to colleagues at last weekend’s EU summit, emerged as Nato announced it would build a new “spearhead” rapid reaction force of up to 4,000 troops that can be flown into eastern Europe in 48 hours to respond to possible Russian aggression.

Which prompted 2 responses from Russia..

First, a diplomatic talking to...

Yuri V. Ushakov, an aide to Mr. Putin, said Mr. Barroso’s recounting of a private conversation was “inappropriate.”

“Whether these words were said or not, in my viewpoint, this quote given is taken out of context and it had absolutely different sense,” Mr. Ushakov said.

Disclosing details of conversation is undiplomatic, “unworthy of a serious political player”

And second, as The NY Times reports, a military one...

With NATO leaders expected to endorse a rapid-reaction force of 4,000 troops for Eastern Europe this week, a senior Russian military official said on Tuesday that Moscow would revise its military doctrine to account for “changing military dangers and military threats.”

In an interview with the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, the official, Mikhail Popov, deputy secretary of Russia’s military Security Council, called the expansion of NATO “one of the leading military dangers for the Russian Federation.”

Mr. Popov said Russia expected that leaders of NATO would seek to strengthen the alliance’s long-term military presence in Eastern Europe by establishing new military bases in the region and by deploying tanks in Estonia, a member of NATO that borders Russia.

“We believe that the defining factor in our relationship with NATO remains the unacceptability for Russia of plans to move military infrastructures of the alliance to our borders, including by means of expanding the bloc,” Mr. Popov said.

*  *  *

Furthermore, Russia appears set to release the Putin-Barroso conversation...

Russia ready to release audio recording of conversation between President Vladimir Putin and European Commission President Jose Barroso, Interfax cites Russian ambassador to European Union as saying.

Unless EU objects, Russia will distribute recording of phone talk to establish truth within 2 days, Vladimir Chizov says in letter to Barroso, Interfax reports

One can only wonder what Barroso said...

This is an extraordinarily difficult time with the BRICS and rest-of-world moving back toward a more stable gold currency exchange system after the West has rigged gold and interest rates for a couple of decades creating worldwide bubbles and economic instability.

Forcing Russia out of SWIFT as proposed by David Cameron last Friday will de facto push Russia onto gold currency exchange just as Iran did in 2012/13 when excluded from SWIFT. At that time Iran traded oil for gold with India with India transferring Rupia to Turkey and Turkey then sending gold back to Iran. Obama did a u-turn on his policy to Iran in 2013 when his advisors figured out it had reignited petrogold.

Cameron's collapsing LBMA gold rig, the West''s monetary failure, and scandals such as exposure of Obama's ISIS creation result in both UK and US and now EU lackey Barroso baiting Russia into a conflict as a distraction when what we really need is monetary reform and bond market restructuring.

Putin should declare abrogation of all arms treaties and start producing new nukes as fast as possible. Call their bluff, target every European city possible and comment that if NATO wants Russia to commit suicide, Russia will make sure Europe, and the US, commit suicide also.

Like the alpha-male psychopaths of our past, the alpha-male psychopaths of the West only understand force.

More urgently, when will the fate of MH17 be disclosed?  They're so gung-ho to point the finger at Putin, when we have a mass murderer in our midst, and the gutless pansies are covering for him!  WHEN IS SOMEBODY WITH A CONSCIENCE AND AN OUNCE OF INTEGRITY GOING TO STAND UP AND TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MURDER OF EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD ABOARD MH17?

You're right! WHy on earth would Putin or Russia want to take Kiev or any of Ukraine?

Yes, they can take it but holding it and servicing it requires mammoth resources in men, arms, food, gas, etc etc which they have to foot the bill.

It would be a HUGE mistake and they know it which is why Putin has no plans to put one pinky inside Ukraine.

The bigger question is will he find a few reasons to halt gas supplies to Poland and Slovakia and maybe a few other satellite NATO countries this winter?

I think so

Russia doesn't have to hold Kiev or any other city should they choose military action. A brief occupation and the public hanging of the Jews and foreigners responsible for shooting down the airliner and shelling of civilians then go home. Correct, the overthrow of Kiev and Poroshenko, would be very easy as it is hanging by a thread anyhow, then the east could and would consolidate, which is all that is necessary. Kiev and the west could fight it out amongst themselves, and the EU/US could have at a rotting corpse.

The banker's MIC propaganda efforts are stupid and nauseating

Everyone is able to see by now what this is about and why the bankers are in their last phase of one final hoopla.

ISIS isn't real. There is no threat to bankers or anything related to the vermin. ISIS causing pain and suffering to poor people just shows how weak and controlled they are.

Just tactics to scare the world into submission and agreeing to unlimited resources to fight the threat.

That open letter to Merkel was a refreshing deviation from the status quo. I think this country is ripe for an overhaul and the beginning of trials to identify who the real worst enemies of America and the world are.

This is probably the case.  The US could take Juarez in a couple of weeks.  If Obama made that statement, it wouldn't mean that it was going to happen, nor would it mean that it wouldn't happen.  It would simply be a statement of military strength.  I don't think that Russia actually wants to invade Ukraine, but that is not a reason to discount the possibility of it happening.  Shit's unstable over there, and there's no telling what's going to happen.  But if Russia does actually invade, we'll damned sure know about it.

Sorry Putin, but I'm betting that it was Russia that released the "fuck-the-EU-lets-put-Yats-on-the-throne" phone conversation.  While I'm glad it was released, should I be correct in who released it, bellyaching about the contents of a phonecall being released is hypocritical.  If the conversation is not really that damning and the EU is playing dumb games by quoting things out of context, don't wait to see if there is an objection from the EU, but release the call.  To quote Nuland, "Fuck the EU."

That's fine and I agree with the post above, but I'm saying that they shouldn't bellyache about it and just release the full contents of the call.  Don't ask permission, just call the EU on its BS if the EU is engaged in BS.  It's a nit that I'm picking and probably has no bearing on the grand scheme of the things, but if they're going to be bold, then they should be bold.

Barroso is a CIA muppet who became prime minister of meaningless Portugal with the help of his handler Leon Panetta. He should not try to play the big boy and bring a knife to a gun fight. Also he is a corrupt politician who liked spending holidays on the yacht of a Greek shipping magnate before handing over to his host some European subsidies. He is a symbol of crony capitalism. Putin takes Lisbon in 2 weeks, if he wants to. Barroso needs to calm down and learn how to read a map. Then he would think twice before making stupid statements like that.

Tue, 09/02/2014 - 19:59 | 5173622 gezley
gezley's picture

You're wrong there. Tusk is van Rompuy's successor as President of the European Council. Barroso is the far more powerful President of the European Commission, and his successor is Jean-Claude Juncker.

Tusk's role will be essentially to moderate debates and discussions among the 28 members, but not to direct policy. A pretty toothless co-ordinator role, in other words. Juncker's role as President of the Commission will be far more significant, and this is why the British went all out to stop him getting the job, because unlike the old Marxist and fifth columnist Barroso, who has no doubt been serving his anyone-but-Europe masters, Juncker is firmly pro-European, and shares the original vision for post-war Europe laid out by the great Catholics Adenauer, De Gaspari and Schuman, a vision of Europe that did not anticipate its hijack by the entry of the British trojan horse in the 70s (much to the dismay of de Gaulle).

My reading of this sorry state of affairs in eastern Europe is that it is being brought to a head because once Juncker takes up his new position in November the EU traitors serving Anglo-America will have run out of time to sabotage the continent. I expect Juncker and the new  EU foreign policy chief, pro-Russian Federica Mogherini to bring the rest of Europe to heel towards the end of the year and restore good relations with Russia.

I could be wrong about this but my instinct tells me the outright hostility shown by the British to the democratic election of Juncker comes down to one thing: their knowledge that at a crossroads in European history, Europe finally rejected the Anglo parasite destroying it from within and went with a man who will spend his 5- or possibly 10-year term consolidating Europe and strengthening European ties with Eurasia, to form the wealthiest and most powerful trading bloc in history while the parasites slump to the ground, badly defeated.

One of the reasons that Putin is admired and respected throughout the world is his habit of under-promising and over-delivering.

While defining objectives, allocating resources, task organizing with timelines, identifying critical paths and milestones are intrinsic to all plans and used as a performance baseline (excepting those implemented by the US Government, et. al. - as corporate welfare, crony handouts, political donation kickbacks, etc...) - Putin will approve a plan and then drive his subordinate leaders to come in under budget and well ahead of schedule.

Sometimes the "obvious" objectives are not the real objectives. ;-)

Russian military has a hectic reputation... 10 Russian paratroopers become an invading force of 1000! that route the entire Ukrainian Army, NATO has to have 5 to 10 thousand quick response troops and a 2.3 million man force to stop a 285,000 man Russian military. With that kind of rep... no wonder Barrosso (and NATO) is crapping himself!

No one in Europe is going to want to fight Russia except maybe the Poles.  Good luck. Germans? Italians? Spaniards? Dutch?    Maybe some Brits and maybe a few people in Obama's-Democrats USSA are dumb enough to want to fight.

This is right on Russia's border and the Russians will fight.  Plus other Slavic people and Orthodox men will fight on the Russian side.   Europe does not want to get in a fight with Russia.

As these guys atDNR have said - every 40 to 60 years the West tries to invade the Slavic areas near Russia and ever time they get destroyed.  Their message to the West is essentially - leave us the F alone or come here to fight and you will die.

Russia ready to release audio recording of conversation between President Vladimir Putin and European Commission President Jose Barroso,

Sooner the better. This whole thing is an orchestrated design to recreate the cold war. A new cold war enables the USA to seperate Russia from Europe. End the years of growing economic and social ties that scare the shit out of Washington DC. There is only one winner in a war with Russia that devestates Europe. The USA, and the EU clowns totally ignore their nations interests to serve Washington's interests. EU leaders are totally coopted by bribes, high paying jobs for family members and NSA black mail. EU leaders also know that the CIA and MI6 stand ready to "fuck them up" big time should they stray from the American script. Accidents happens, strange illnesses crop up. Bottom line is Washington is trying to preserve it's world position by forcing conflict between Russia and Europe. The usefull idiots in this case are Brussels EU whores and Polish and Lithuanian fuck heads living in the past.

Only way to avoid the coming European war is for people in Europe to rise up and throw out the Washington and Brussels whores. But. they are too fat dumb and happy to act out. They will behave like the sheep they are and so will Americans. Both peoples do not deserve freedom, deomocracy or free markets, they neither want them or know what to do with them. That is old hat, they want media, sports, movies, drugs and government jobs. All else just gets in the way. Freedom is too time consuming for them. So sheep they will remain. Baaaaa, you stupid fucks!

Concerning Kaliningrad, Lithuania has that nut in a tight vise... rail transport, gas transit... imagine if they closed the border to Kaliningrad - where would those Russians go to the mall, or to get the groceries they've been used to for years?

Besides... all that Russian raw material that ships from Klaipeda, where else is it going to go? Primorsk and St P often get frozen up.
