Russia Slams Barroso Over Leaked "Take Kiev In 2 Weeks" Comments, Revises Military Doctrine

Tyler Durden's picture

As we discussed yesterday, Vladimir Putin's apparent 'threat' to EU's Barroso that "If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks," prompted both anger and response as NATO reacted by stating a new "spearhead" force of 3-5,000 troops would be flown in to combat any (further) Russian aggression. However, Russia is not happy that the EC President leaked the conversation with Putin's aide Ushakov stating that recounting the private conversation was "inappropriate," "undiplomatic," and "unworthy of a serious political player." More troublingly, the cold-war-tension-like escalation from NATO has prompted Russia to revise its military doctrine to account for “changing military dangers and military threats.”

As The Telegraph reports,

Vladimir Putin has boasted to European leaders that his forces could sweep into Kiev in two weeks if he wanted.

The Russian president reportedly made the threat to the European Commission president during talks on the Ukraine crisis.

Mr Putin told Jose Manuel Barroso: “If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks,” Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper reported, implying this could be the result if the EU stepped up sanctions against Russia.

His comments, relayed by Mr Barroso to colleagues at last weekend’s EU summit, emerged as Nato announced it would build a new “spearhead” rapid reaction force of up to 4,000 troops that can be flown into eastern Europe in 48 hours to respond to possible Russian aggression.

Which prompted 2 responses from Russia..

First, a diplomatic talking to...

Yuri V. Ushakov, an aide to Mr. Putin, said Mr. Barroso’s recounting of a private conversation was “inappropriate.”

“Whether these words were said or not, in my viewpoint, this quote given is taken out of context and it had absolutely different sense,” Mr. Ushakov said.

Disclosing details of conversation is undiplomatic, “unworthy of a serious political player”

And second, as The NY Times reports, a military one...

With NATO leaders expected to endorse a rapid-reaction force of 4,000 troops for Eastern Europe this week, a senior Russian military official said on Tuesday that Moscow would revise its military doctrine to account for “changing military dangers and military threats.”

In an interview with the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, the official, Mikhail Popov, deputy secretary of Russia’s military Security Council, called the expansion of NATO “one of the leading military dangers for the Russian Federation.”

Mr. Popov said Russia expected that leaders of NATO would seek to strengthen the alliance’s long-term military presence in Eastern Europe by establishing new military bases in the region and by deploying tanks in Estonia, a member of NATO that borders Russia.

“We believe that the defining factor in our relationship with NATO remains the unacceptability for Russia of plans to move military infrastructures of the alliance to our borders, including by means of expanding the bloc,” Mr. Popov said.

Furthermore, Russia appears set to release the Putin-Barroso conversation...

Russia ready to release audio recording of conversation between President Vladimir Putin and European Commission President Jose Barroso, Interfax cites Russian ambassador to European Union as saying.

Unless EU objects, Russia will distribute recording of phone talk to establish truth within 2 days, Vladimir Chizov says in letter to Barroso, Interfax reports

One can only wonder what Barroso said...

Russian Authorities know that a force of 3-5,000 is no threat to Russia.

But it is played as a threat to the ignorant Russian masses for the purpose of uniting them to fight a bogeyman.

The force raised won't fight a bogeyman.  It will fight people who can't imagin they've been targeted.  While populations have forgotten the Game of Thrones, their leaders haven't, and are waiting to see which conventions will be the first tossed to the wind.

Don't blame Russia.  Putin is aggressive in the pursuit of Russian dominance, even to the point of military action.

However he has not thought that when he eliminates the BENEFITS of military forebearance, others will follow suit.   It will not matter if Russia benefits vs Germany or vs Britain, when the tide of enterprise-supporting behavior gives way to the Game of Thrones, all boats will be beached with the outgoing tide.

Back to balkanized europe, as was normal until 1945, with constant wars where Princes trade the lives of subjects for wealth.

And what makes you think the ignorant Russian masses will hear any more about it, than the ignorant Western masses have heard about the deliberately withheld Kevan ATC tapes?

I say, do it anyhow, just for kicks. Even though the "media" would spin the entire thing, just like they very successfully dodged that fine Nuland recording. I mean, that bitch really spilt the beans and yet about 99& of the sheeple didn't (or didn't want to) get the point.

Putin and Russia would be incapable of governing the whole of the Ukraine anymore. It's population would be ungovernable by Russia with the exception of Donatesk, and Luhansk. Perhaps 2 other Ukrainian Obelisks (states).

The whole of Ukraine is an insane conglomeration that Putin does not want or need.  But 4 oblasts declaring independence and operating as a Russo-friendly country would be right up his alley.  Combine Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson oblasts and you get a nice land-bridge to Crimea.  (spelling courtesy of Wikipedia)

And last week's hotspot of Berdiansk is in Zaporizhia oblast.  The separatists are working on that land-bridge.

Putin realizes he is not being taken seriously.  At one time, he sat at the head of the table.  Now, all the knives are coming out for him.  He simply does not know how to play the game at this level.

First off, Barroso is simply playing things smart.  Putin threatens Ukraine during a converstation with him.  The only prudent thing to do is to relay the message on to others around the EU/NATO table.  Putin should have realized this is how things are with the EU.

Putin's claims that Russia is a nuclear power and can also take Kiev in two weeks clearly are clear signs of weakness.  Putin thinks the rest of the world do not know these things.  Putin thinks the threat will be a shortcut to re-establishing things as they once were.

Barroso played things smart as it is clear we are dealing with a war scenario.  Putin thinks only in military terms.  Without logistical support, Russia will over-reach and be defeated by time and the herding of the world's militaries against Russia.  What is important is that Russia make the first miltary move.  Once Russia sticks it's foot in the door, it cannot be closed.  The real question relates to the quality of the Russian military.  Did it's elite paratrooper force really get it's butt handed to it in the Ukraine?  It seems to look that way.  That cannot be comforting to the people of Russia, or Russia's partners in the CIS.

Let's talk about the CIS for a minute.  Where do they sit?  I think we know they are sitting this one out.  Putin is on his own.  Again, that is a loss from a logistical point of view.

Putin is clearly cornered and is acting like a rabid dog.  His snarling means he cannot back up or back off.  He has not left himself a diplomatic exit.

Cooler heads within Russia will prevail.  With or without Putin's blessing, Russia will back down.

It is safe to say the typical Pro-Putin supporter here suffers from "foggy thinking".  They are not used to winning so they don't pay attention to detail.  It is important to promote the fog of war as it allows you to use your opponents' momentum against them.  ...GeoStrategic Judo...

We are past the point where diplomacy can effect the outcome.  Everyone understands that.  The only thing that is important is to get into a good ambush position and strike.

Putin has no victories in a global sense.  His followers know that.  Many of those thousand who have propsered as part of his enterprise realize their days are also numbered, unless they change benefactors.  May you live in interesting times...

Look, it's simple:  Barroso is a slimey-little cunt of a politician and Putin is in comparison a Gentleman.

This is the same Barroso that left his own country in debt and crisis.

In short: he should be hanged and left there to rot as a warning to other cunts like him.

As I keep saying, the Zionists already have control there.  President, PM and main regional Governors are all of the tribe, as is the head of the Central Bank and as are all the oligarchs who looted what little is left of that country's wealth.  The 'Nazis' were just useful cannon fodder to get the elected Government to resign.

No doubt a full disclosure of the conversation will show that Putin was speaking hypothetically, and that if Russia were to make a real invasion of Ukraine it would not do so with a measely 1000 troops - one battalion, but rather with 50 battalions and thousands of tanks.  This, of course, would be neither wise nor necessary, as Russia does not seek territory in Ukraine, but rather wishes to protect Ukrainian Russian speakers and undermine the Nuland-installed mob government in Kiev.
