US Troops Are Heading To Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

While only 'humanitarian adviser' boots on the ground are present in Iraq (and Syria), Reuters reports that preparations are under way near Ukraine's western border for a joint military exercise this month with more than 1,000 troops from the United States and its allies. As Obama told reporters last week, "that a military solution to this problem is not going to be forthcoming," it seems a little odd 'strategically' to go ahead with the Rapid Trident exercise Sept. 16-26 as a sign of the commitment of NATO states to support non-NATO member Ukraine, entailing the first significant deployment of U.S. and other personnel to Ukraine since the crisis erupted.

As Reuters reports,

As fighting between the army and Russian-backed rebels rages in eastern Ukraine, preparations are under way near its western border for a joint military exercise this month with more than 1,000 troops from the United States and its allies.

The decision to go ahead with the Rapid Trident exercise Sept. 16-26 is seen as a sign of the commitment of NATO states to support non-NATO member Ukraine while stopping well short of military intervention in the conflict.

...

"At the moment, we are still planning for (the exercise) to go ahead," U.S. Navy Captain Gregory Hicks, spokesman for the U.S. Army's European Command said on Tuesday.

...

But Rapid Trident will entail the first significant deployment of U.S. and other personnel to Ukraine since the crisis erupted.

...

"It is very important to understand that a military solution to this problem is not going to be forthcoming," Obama told reporters at the White House last week.

...

The United States European Command (EUCOM) says the exercise this month will involve about 200 U.S. personnel as well as 1,100 others from Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Britain, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania and Spain.

Focused on peacekeeping, it will include command post drills, patrolling and dealing with improvised explosive devices.

Everything you are mentioning was *so* true - thirty years ago. Today, not so much. To get a clue, check out the Iskander and/or the X-37B. Or "hypersonic cruise missile".

If there is a real hot war, expect the following: Weapons which were supposedly years away and on the drawing board will show up as operational, followed by stuff beyond your wildest nightmares.

The US thinks that money equals fabulous weapons. It doesn't. What equals fabulous weapons is brainpower, not money. The US Deep State MIC is certainly a mixed blessing if the F22 and F35 are any indication. Russia is blessed with really good chess players who don't have enough money to build really expensive weapons. The result in WWII was the T34, the Sturmovik and the early GRAD, later the AK47 and the MiG15, now the Iskander, the Shval and the Kornet. All of these are first rate weapons, and I'm sure there are a lot more we haven't found out about yet...

As for Subs, I worked in ASW for many years. The skuttlebut was that all the leading edge techniques we were into for finding subs were all ideas ... stolen from the Russians.

X-37B? Good call. I haven't checked on that project in quite some time. I know Russians were working on a similar design in early 90's supposedly for Mars exploration. The US counterpart, everyone assumed, was to replace the aging Space Shuttle. Reading the wiki, I now know that it not only became operational, but had and entirely different application in mind.

I was also suprised to find out recently that Russian supersonic torpedos, that I though were abandoned RND projects, actually made it to mass market... well, not to retail. Russia, just like the US, keeps the best toys for itself and only sells weapons it can easily counter to allies (Syria and Iran).

The F-35 is junk.  This is according to Pierre Sprey who helped design the F-16 and A-10.  Total trash and the software still is not ready.   The F-22 is not much better. Sprey says stealth is a scam, too.  Pierre Sprey said an old Mig 21 would grease any F-35 because the F-35 cannot turn plus has many other problems.

Sprey is lovid because the planes are so expensive and are terrible.  The USA is making a lot of expensive junk. American soldiers were often outfitted with untested or defective junk.

As far as brain power, a lot of missilies and weapons systems now rely heavily on software.  The Russians are among the best programmers in the world.  The USA has good ones but most do not want to work at defense companies.  So you get a lot of H1B's from India and China.   The F-35's software is a mess and is still not ready.  Also, loads of US weapons systems have open market and grey market junk chinese components that slipped through the cracks.

ICBMs are not slow.  When those warheads are coming in, they're coming in at speeds of Mach 15-20 or so.  If you want to see what we thought was required to intercept incoming warheads back in the day, look up the sprints and the Spartans (missiles.)  Their acceleration is extreme too.  It would take about 30 minutes for an ICBM in Montana to make it to Moscow. Our primary ICBM is the Minute Man III, which has multiple warhead options, including the W87.  It is MIRVed with up to three warheads.  We used to have the LGM 118 Peacekeeper, which was MIRVed with up to 10 warheads, but one of the START treaties nixed that.  It scared the hell out of the Soviets.

And you should look at what Russia has been doing with its nuclear arsenal.  They haven't relied on brute force for a while.  Their SS18s no longer have 20MT warheads on them.  Their forces look a lot more similar to ours now. The largest warhead that they have on their ICBMs/SLBMs is 800kt.  Big, yes, but not like what they used to use.

Edit:  It's hard to get a sense of how fast they're actually going in the video, but to put the video in perspective, the Minuteman is 60 feet tall.  The launch starts a bit after 3:00.

You didn't mention space weapons. We don't know what anyone has up there.

And nuke plants in the US? If I were an enemy of the US, and there's lots of them, with more every day, I'd put two dozen nukes down the throat of Old Faithful and blow that volcano. That would destroy North America pretty quick.

Ebola's going to kill half the planet soon enough, including anyone remotely capable of preventing a nuke plant from losing cooling and blowing.

Now, if the Russians and the Chinese thought that Ebola (patented) was a weapon, what do they care about blowing Yellowstone sky high?

By the way, winter is not the greatest asset. It is sheer size. Winter is a complication. Germany conquered Norway rather easily and winters are rough there. Winter is a complication mostly for the invader. However, it was a partial asset in the Battle of the Bulge for Germany.

Is anyone as old as me and remember when Turner was first starting out in Atlanta and his politics were simple Southern conservative? Then do you remember how quickly he started to tow the US Deep State line once TBS and CNN hit the big time??

A younger me was amazed and enlightened about how things really work through seeing the amazing transformation of Ted Turner. Of course, he got to poke Jane Fonda as a reward for his treachery to his previous beliefs.

On a related note, just so you'll know what time it is. A few months ago I read about Ted Turner down in Argentina (being operated on for something).

It would be interesting to know how many western contractors and proxies are operating in the region ALREADY.  Remember that the snipers in Maidan were outsiders, sent there to shoot both sides and foment civil unrest.  Heaven knows what else the psychopaths have been doing, but Victoria Nuland confirmed back in April that FIVE BILLLION DOLLARS had already been spent BY THAT TIME.  Let's consider that.  FIVE BILLION DOLLARS constitute some fairly significant black operations, not to mention whatever bribes were used to assemble the puppet junta and the payroll for thugs who beat up parliamentarians who voiced objections.  Large scale organized crime is expensive.

Re that $5 billion:

The following post describes the experience of one of the Anti-Maiden organizers. She reports that the Mainden protestors were paid $160 per day to show up and be part of a "protest" against the existing government. From her description of events it si clear that the "protest" consisted for the most part of all the homeless from across Kiev.

$160 USD per day is equivalent to one months average Ukrainian earnings.

If you threw a petrol bomb you earned a further $50. If you fired a rifle you earned $1,000. So the snioer killings of both police and protestors earned someone around $37,000 for one days "work."

Question is who footed the bill for this. Who has the capacity to print FRNs like there is no tomorrow and turn those FRNs into a political movement that otherthrows a democraticllly elected government?

"Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds... Oh Lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'till their Judgment day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of Judgment, God is calling
On their knees the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
Oh Lord yeah!"

true that Geezer wrote the lyrics for most songs, but i would disagree that Ozzy had no talent.  you could argue the contrary, that he got assigned his wife to make sure he was kept on a leash.  even still, some of the lyrics of his later solo efforts showed some of the same themes as early black sabbath stuff.  but there is little doubt that the industry, and/or his wife, flipped him to the dark side eventually...

Not saying your post doesn't have a tinge of truth to it, but the Fabians have been writing about this for over 100 years now. Give people one of two options: Join the new high-tech security state and live a comfortable life, or rough it out in the woods where your lack of technology will be your undoing.

Given that setting up an alternative, underground economic infrastructure outside the City-States is the only way to beat these fuckers, and most people who are informed enough to do so are either very short-sighted or predisposed to the foolish "lone wolf" mentality, I'd say we're trapped rats.
