US Troops Are Heading To Ukraine
While only 'humanitarian adviser' boots on the ground are present in Iraq (and Syria), Reuters reports that preparations are under way near Ukraine's western border for a joint military exercise this month with more than 1,000 troops from the United States and its allies. As Obama told reporters last week, "that a military solution to this problem is not going to be forthcoming," it seems a little odd 'strategically' to go ahead with the Rapid Trident exercise Sept. 16-26 as a sign of the commitment of NATO states to support non-NATO member Ukraine, entailing the first significant deployment of U.S. and other personnel to Ukraine since the crisis erupted.
As fighting between the army and Russian-backed rebels rages in eastern Ukraine, preparations are under way near its western border for a joint military exercise this month with more than 1,000 troops from the United States and its allies.
The decision to go ahead with the Rapid Trident exercise Sept. 16-26 is seen as a sign of the commitment of NATO states to support non-NATO member Ukraine while stopping well short of military intervention in the conflict.

Like said by me and Dr, Paul Craig Roberts, Putin made the mistake by not immediately taking over the Ukraine before NATO could move in more troops.

You will need to find a basis to attack the treaties in those cases. Putin had nothing to do with them. Besides, issues in Ukraine are different. Using your line of reasoning, the Russians can demand that Americans and Canadians (black and white) return N. America to the natives.

1) Ukraine is an independent nation ruled by people who cannot possibly be any more corrupt or fascistic than the President/Prime Minister/President of Russia-- the man who gave solemn term limits a bad name by turning them into a 1984-ish farce. Perhaps the next Ruler of Russia will have to be the Municipal Rat Catcher for Novgorod, in which case we know what Putin's next political campaign will be aimed at.
2) The Soviet Union GAVE the Crimea to Ukraine. It wasn't lost in war or bought or fraudulently-obtained through loosely-worded agreements or even squandered on the turn of an unfriendly card. It was GIVEN AWAY at a time when Moscow was all-powerful.
3) Russia formally accepted the status of successor state to the happily now-defunct USSR (thank you, Ronnie) and freely recognized the borders of newly-independent Ukraine as it spun off from the decrepit hulk of the Soviet slave empire.
4) Ukraine, evil though you may think it to be, voluntarily abandoned its entire nuclear arsenal in favor of solemn guarantees of non-aggression provided jointly by the US and Russia. This may make them gullible morons but it does not make them sadistic dreamers of pan-Slavic world domination a la Putin.
5) There is no Iron Curtain keeping the poor Russophiles trapped behind Ukrainian lines. If they want to go home to Russia, it is just a bus ride away. But Putin cares nothing for such dolts except as excuses to mask what he really wants-- Ukrainian land.
Since he is so keen on pushing lapsed historical claims to no-longer-Russian territory and also incidentally denouncing the forced colonization of Israelis into formerly Palestinian areas, it only makes sense that he would see the obvious injustice of maintaining a Russian stranglehold on lands which were historically the property of others but have been strenuously artificially colonized afterwards. Ergo, he has no claim to either Crimea or any part of Ukraine or he has no claim to Kaliningrad and the lands stolen from Finland as a result of the odious Nazi-Soviet Pact of 1939. But he cannot logically maintain a claim to both sets of mutually-exclusive circumstances other than through a simple appeal to brute force as opposed to natural rights.
But regardless of any claims, allowing an appeal to arms to supplant mutual consent among all interested parties merely greases the wheels of onrushing war. Stop it now is what I have to say to the modern disciples of Munich.

I believe that the exercises are going to be held in the far west of Ukraine, in areas which have at various times been under Polish, Hungarian, and Romanian control. The soldiers will be well out of harm's way.
But this exercise does give the U.S. cover to leave behind weapons, equipment, special forces and technicians. All of these were present when Russia spanked Georgia a few years ago; but it was a "Black Sea" too far away for the U.S. to provide significant support when the Russians came. It may be different this time.
The Russians have learned the art of "mission creep" extremely well. They don't know where all this is going, nor what the end-game strategy is, either. But they are playing this out for keeps.
Whatever else happens, the ambitions of the Ukrainian oligarchs to enrich themselves further, by selling off the natural resources and farmland of Eastern Ukraine to American- and UK-based capitalist enterprises, is not going to happen.

In reality America has few military options in Russia's backyard unless it has the backing of a full and enthusiastic NATO and that is very unlikely. Europe has reason to be unexcited about a possible long and expensive conflict. While still trying to recover from a recession Europe would face fuel shortages and a massive spike in the price of natural gas.
