30 Million Americans On Antidepressants And 21 Other Facts About America's Endless Pharmaceutical Nightmare

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of End of The American Dream blog,

Has there ever been a nation more hooked on drugs than the United States?  And I am not just talking about illegal drugs – the truth is that the number of Americans addicted to legal drugs is far greater than the number of Americans addicted to illegal drugs.  As you will read about below, more than 30 million Americans are currently on antidepressants and doctors in the U.S. wrote more than 250 million prescriptions for painkillers last year.  Sadly, most people got hooked on these drugs very innocently.  They trusted that their doctors would never prescribe something for them that would be harmful, and they trusted that the federal government would never approve any drugs that were not safe.  And once the drug companies get you hooked, they often have you for life.

You see, the reality of the matter is that some of these “legal drugs” are actually some of the most addictive substances on the entire planet.  And when they start raising the prices on those drugs, there isn’t much that the addicts can do about it.  It is a brutally efficient business model, and the pharmaceutical industry guards their territory fiercely.  Very powerful people will often do some really crazy things when there are hundreds of billions of dollars at stake.  The following are 22 facts about America’s endless pharmaceutical nightmare that everyone should know…

#1 According to the New York Times, more than 30 million Americans are currently taking antidepressants.

#2 The rate of antidepressant use among middle aged women is far higher than for the population as a whole.  At this point, one out of every four women in their 40s and 50s is taking an antidepressant medication.

#3 Americans account for about five percent of the global population, but we buy more than 50 percent of the pharmaceutical drugs.

#4 Americans also consume a whopping 80 percent of all prescription painkillers.

#5 It is hard to believe, but doctors in the United States write 259 million prescriptions for painkillers each year.  Prescription painkillers are some of the most addictive legal drugs, and our doctors are serving as enablers for millions up0n millions of Americans that find themselves hooked on drugs that they cannot kick.

#6 Overall, pharmaceutical drug use in America is at an all-time high.  According to a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, nearly 70 percent of all Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and 20 percent of all Americans are on at least five prescription drugs.

#7 According to the CDC, approximately 9 out of every 10 Americans that are at least 60 years old say that they have taken at least one prescription drug within the last month.

#8 In 2010, the average teen in the United States was taking 1.2 central nervous system drugs.  Those are the kinds of drugs which treat conditions such as ADHD and depression.

#9 A very disturbing Government Accountability Office report found that approximately one-third of all foster children in the United States are on at least one psychiatric drug.

#10 An astounding 95 percent of the “experimental medicines” that the pharmaceutical industry produces are found not to be safe and are never approved.  Of the remaining 5 percent that are approved, we often do not find out that they are deadly to us until decades later.

#11 One study discovered that mothers that took antidepressants during pregnancy were four times more likely to have a baby that developed an autism spectrum disorder.

#12 It has been estimated that prescription drugs kill approximately 200,000 people in the United States every single year.

#13 An American dies from an unintentional prescription drug overdose every 19 minutes.  According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, accidental prescription drug overdose is “the leading cause of acute preventable death for Americans”.

#14 In the United States today, prescription painkillers kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined.

#15 According to the CDC, approximately three quarters of a million people a year are rushed to emergency rooms in the United States because of adverse reactions to pharmaceutical drugs.

#16 The number of prescription drug overdose deaths in the United States is five times higher than it was back in 1980.

#17 A survey conducted for the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that more than 15 percent of all U.S. high school seniors abuse prescription drugs.

#18 More than 26 million women over the age of 25 say that they are “using prescription medications for unintended uses“.

#19 If all of these antidepressants are helping, then why are more Americans killing themselves?  The suicide rate for Americans between the ages of 35 and 64 increased by nearly 30 percent between 1999 and 2010.  The number of Americans that die by suicide is now greater than the number of Americans that die as a result of car accidents every year.

#20 Antidepressant use has been linked to mass shootings in America over and over and over again, and yet the mainstream media is eerily quiet about this. Is it because they don’t want to threaten one of their greatest sources of advertising revenue?

#21 The amount of money that the pharmaceutical industry is raking in is astronomical.  It has been reported that Americans spent more than 280 billion dollars on prescription drugs during 2013.

If many of these drugs were not so addictive, the pharmaceutical companies would make a lot less money.  And pharmaceutical drug addicts often don’t fit the profile of what we think a “drug addict” would look like.  For example, CNN shared the story of a 55-year-old grandmother named Cynthia Scudo that become addicted to prescription painkillers…

For Scudo, her addiction began — as they all do — innocently enough.

She sought relief from hip pain, possibly caused by scarring from cesarean sections she had delivering several of her children.

Her then-husband recommended a physician.

“There was no physical therapy offered,” she said of the doctor’s visit. “The first reaction was, let’s give you some drugs.”

He put her on OxyContin.

By the second week, she was physically addicted.

She was popping so much of the painkiller and other drugs such as anti-anxiety Valium that they equated to a dosage for three men.

There is lots and lots of money to be made from addiction.  In fact, if the U.S. health care system was a totally separate nation it would actually be the 6th largest economy on the entire globe.  We are talking about piles of money larger than most people would ever dare to imagine.

And with so much money floating around, it is quite easy for the pharmaceutical industry to buy the cooperation of our politicians and of the media.

Some time when you are watching television in the evening, consciously take note of how often a pharmaceutical commercial comes on.

It has gotten to the point where we are literally being inundated with these ads.

They are already making hundreds of billions of dollars, and they think that there is room for even more growth.

Will they ever be satisfied?

Try GABA  for sleep. Core molecule valium was designed on, an amino acid, super powerful but gentle giant. Take 2 horse pills, maybe combine with 5HTP (tryptophan). That's the single most powerful discovery I have ever known for many people, lotsa wacky pre meno pausal ex girl friends love me for it!!

After that, Tumeric is unreal. Better than prednezone!! Amazing and powerful, anytime in healing crisis go to Tumeric and high dose vitamin C!!

Pay me later.

PS Don't forget brown rice stir fries with no meat when in healing crisis, no soy, tamari only, all you can, plus yoga.

PSS Jew medicine (allopathic) sucks like everything else they "heal" you with!!

Tumeric should be regularly consumed for sure, both in cooking and as a supplement.

For sleep, I prefer valerian ususally in combo with chamomile, hops and catnip.

Should be? Why do you think so?  Marketeers, of course.  I'm not saying there is anything wrong with tumeric, I just find it interesting when people in the west "discover" something "new" that's been around for like, forever.  And then they are so adamant about what people "should" do.

I don't think it's addictive either.

Better a chemistry book than pills, alcohol, dope, etc.  from my perspective.  My family (most of the adults) take anti-anxiety, and/or antidepressants routinely, with a little mixed drink to top off and feel "normal" from day to day.  Rationalization is a powerful thing.

And the good news is ...  most Americans never take the pills they are prescribed.  All of the statistics mentioned above go by the amount "prescribed" not the amount consumed.  Several studies have shown that the compliance rate can be less than 10%.  Go ahead, look through anyone's medicine cabinet and you'll find dozens of bottles of pills prescribed years before -- mostly full. Even crazier, thirty percent of prescriptions are never filled.

And the bad news is ... people dispose of the drugs in the toilet and our water systems are turning into drug cesspools complete with three headed frogs and bisexual fish.

Turmeric is good.

I use a lot.

Ginger, Garlic, Olive oil, Butter, Cinamon.

Plenty of veggies and not too much meat.

As near as possible, nothing out of a box!

As for sleep, lots of exercise, beer and pot works for me.

Bullshit.  Been officially vegan for at least a year now.  I feel great.  My eye sight improved and I no longer wear glasses.  All the fungus under my nails is gone.  I have no dandruff and thick strong hair no balding.  The ringing in my ears is quiet.  I'm not tired so easily.  An old friend remarked that I 'looked revitalized'.  I have not relied on any pharmaceutical medication ever in the last 5 years, and the last prescription caused a bad candida albicans infection:

[T]he main cause of Candida Albicans infection is antibiotics. The longer and more often you take them, and the higher dose you take, the greater the risk of an opportunistic Candida infection – especially when you alternate or combine antibiotics of a different family. The reason for this is that Candida is always present on the skin, in the colon and on mucous membranes, but it is kept in check by bacteria that also live there

Oh, and yes I have seen many a doctor that is so willing to want to punch a hole in me to take a sample at $500.00 a poke and then turn around and say that they don't know what causes it or what it is.

At this point, if I need like emergency care from an accident or some injury, there is no need to see a doctor.  What would a doctor do anyway?  Nothing.  Write a prescription.  What else would they know or even care to do?  Nothing.  Bill the insurance.

I doubt it has anything to do with meat in general. I believe in a certain portion % of natural food, or eating a good organic diet with lots of green veggies, some fruit and clean meat (locally, organic and grass fed grown.) I believe with all the growth hormones, antibiotics and chemicals to "fatten" the animal to get the most meat from it, that this is the cause for a lot of diseases, colds, allergies etc. and also cause for a lot of the anti-protein crowd to come out with misconceptions about even the difference.

For instance in grass fed cows vs. corporation cows there are no dangerous chemicals in grass fed beef, who also happen to flip the omega 3's and 6's to super healthy beef compared to just regular beef at WalMart. Not to mention if you aren't growing your own food or have a local farmer's market, you are getting loads of herbicides, pesticides etc.

Even evolution would suggest a local source of plants and meat. I doubt thousands of years of evolutionary progress has suddenly been found to be false. I am on the primal diet, lost 70 lbs, stronger nails, hair, complexion....

I also have herniated discs in my neck and this diet has reduced my pain level 90%. So I think we can agree that as long as you eat organic and chemical free food while taking natural supplements either from your garden or a trusted supplement recommended by naturalnews.com - Our family of 4 with small kids have never had a cold in over 4 years and that was my boy with a bad cough.

...also any vegan I know personally looks emaciated and sick. I do wish you the best though and even though this is about food let's not forget whats going on in the world right now and that we all need to stand together against the banksters so we don't end up eating soilent green.

**Got a joke: Q - "How do find out a person is vegan?"

A - "Don't worry they will tell you"

You said:

"...also any vegan I know personally looks emaciated and sick."

You are WRONG!  I gained 5 pounds of muscle, NO MEAT!!  My wife said that the balding patch is gone and small hairs are re growing back.  I can throw a 'fast ball' now, where as before, my shoulder was very sore and I could not even rotate my arm around my shoulder.  My face has cleared up of acne and blackheads and the wrinkles and puffy around my eyes are much less.

I feel great!  I can 'do' things like walk, run, ride a bicycle, play my drums very well, not tired all the time.  I sleep well, wake early ready to go!  And, I'm not always craving sweets and sugary stuff.

Think about that.

I call a healing crisis when you are really fucked up, serious problems, effecting you mind/body/spririt to a point of total confusion. Most people heal from their own desire to heal, that's a spiritual issue. You can become amazing when you learn to change your diet/exercise/medative state combined with certain detoxfying compounds like...high dose vitamin C, etc.

Be you own doctor, but find powerful tools when doing so.

Herbs like kava kava or hops are nice, BUT GABA is a core brain molecule.

Check this out!!

1. Without GABA amino (from food) brain goes into seizure.

2. without L-Glutamate your brain goes into coma.

These two aminos drives your brain to both excitement and then rest. Powerful.

Well, if Robin could still think, he'd think that maybe he should've practiced "Safe Auto-erotic Asphyxiation", by having someone "spot" him.  Alas, stats suggest that this (socially unspeakable) form of accidental suicide is more prevalent than people think.  It is how a friend's son died a few years ago.  Damn fool!

Tahoe is the only body of water in the State of California which is still 99% full, as in, 2000 feet deep. The Mac's are there, you can catch one from the shore in fall and BBQ up. I am on a Donner Lake front til next week, then I start a Tahoe Lakefront next month...my guys will lay a rod in the water while we work.

Lahontan Cuthroats are the only native trout. Pyramid Lake north of Reno is full of them, the don't exist in Tahoe anymore and there are somein the Truckee River.

FYI the Lahontan Cuthroat is by far the largest trout species known, the Great Lake Mac's are a transplanted "char"...taste good though.

"doctors" and others in the field of mental health only seek to assist people back onto the hamster wheel to produce, acquire debt and consume. to adjust to an insane system.  To Chase their "Dreams" and be "Successful".

Wellness, on the other hand, is beginning to help people deprogram, see the world's human systems and hierarchies for what they are: smash the hamster wheel and tell the Oligarch's to Piss Off!

For some, it is a very difficult thing to awaken to their true selves and self medicate when the depression sets in that EVERYTHING THEY'VE BEEN TOLD IS A LIE.  So, sadly, many seek "recovery" from addictions of self medication, get anti-depressants, and get back on the hamster wheel.  They fuck themselves in the EarHole BIG TIME because its just a set up for a bigger fall.  I have sympathy for those that can't see their enslavement.

Its always the free thinkers and people of moral principle and good conscience that smoke weed. I have great discussions with herb smokers. Drunks? Forget about it. Pill poppers? Its like tlaking to a fucking wall.

If you really want a good read about cannabis, there is some really cool research going on about the Humans Endo Cannabinoid System, its a sperate endocrine system in your body specifically designed to deal with the THC molecule, since its so large (Atomic Mass of 423). What the Endocannabinoid System does is basically move the THC molecule through your body and get its on its way to your kidneys. The amazing thing about this process is that during the movement through your body, it picks up the garbage that been collecting in your fat cells, or wherever else gunk is accumulating. Its been shown to remove mercury, lead, arsnic, plutonium, cesium and all manner of nasty bits from you body. Its the human bodies own personal trash collector and a base nutrient for a good healthy life.

J. Orlin Grabbe?  Now I know you are old school.  Still have this quote of his on my blog:

"At any rate, the spook spoke the truth: cryptology represents the future of privacy, and more. By implication cryptology also represents the future of money, and the future of banking and finance. (By "money" I mean the medium of exchange, the institutional mechanisms for making transactions, whether by cash, check, debit card or other electronic transfer.) Given the choice between intersecting with a monetary system that leaves a detailed electronic trail of all one's financial activities, and a parallel system that ensures anonymity and privacy, people will opt for the latter. Moreover, they will demand the latter, because the current monetary system is being turned into the principal instrument of surveillance and control by tyrannical elements in Western governments." - J. Yeah, I'm with ya on that but "the advice" is starting to leak over on the girls.

I think the idea (who really knows) was that boys should be "softened"...be made more compliant, non-disruptive, docile. As a father I can tell you that is not the natural state of boys.

Boys are rowdy, adventurous, risk takers, brag about bleeding...very different from what "something/someone" wants them to be.

Can't say I was ever rowdy but damn I was a stupid risk taker. Someone once dared me to run my horse down an embankment and jump over a barbwire fence at the bottom. Of course I had to go for it. At the fence, my horse slammed to a stop and threw me into the fence ripping me to shreads. Came home a bloody mess. Still have the scars. My parents didn't want to spend the money to stitch me up but at least they sprung for a tetanus shot. Another time I was training a horse to jump and put one of the four foot jumps too close to an overhanging oak branch. I don't know how long I lay in the dirt but when I came to blood was streaming down my face. Looked like a scene out of Carrie. "Did you learn any thing?" was my moms response.

I can't believe I did all those stupid things without a helmet. Sometimes I'm not sure how I made it to adulthood. Kids today are so regulated and regimented but certainly less banged up than I was. My only rule was be home by dinner or there would be hell to pay, arm hanging by a thread not withstanding.

Miffed;-)

Yes it is (I say, trying to comfort her, masking my own fear for his safety as well) its what they/we do.

As parents we have to accept this difference, just like when he was learning to climb and swim. It was I who taught him because he wanted to do it...to learn balance & test his own strength and it was I who jumped into the pool and pulled him up when he thought he was old enough to swim with the big boys in the deep end...but wasn't ;-)

The 3 letter ones are especially bad, DEA,FBI,CIA,NSA,FDA,IRS etc.

the government has one reason to exist and that is to make sure they continue to exist, everything else is collateral damage.
