France Folds; Suspends Shipment Of Russian Warship - NATO Allies Pleased

Tyler Durden's picture

France is suspending the delivery of the 1st of 2 hulking Mistral warships to Russia amid security concerns about Moscow's actions in neighboring Ukraine, AP reports President Francois Hollande's office said Wednesday. Hollande's change of mind - as he begs Draghi to devalue the EUR and Schaeuble to lift the deficit limits in Europe - comes at a time when the French economy can hardly cope with losing a few billion (which he previously said was too costly to cancel) but as he explains, Russia's recent actions harm "the foundations of security in Europe." We will see what Hollande got for this... or how he was blackmailed - but for now NATO allies have commented that they "welcome the French Mistral sale suspension."

Despite a possible cease-fire in Ukraine, "the conditions that would allow France to authorize the delivery of the first Mistral-class ship aren't met as of now, " the Elysée Presidential Palace said in a statement released after a gathering of country's defense council around Mr. Hollande.

As AP reports,

France is suspending the delivery of a hulking warship to Russia amid security concerns about Moscow's actions in neighboring Ukraine, President Francois Hollande's office said Wednesday.

The announcement comes a day before the start of a NATO summit and after months of pressure on France from allies to suspend the sale amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Hollande's office, in a statement after he met with top defense advisers, called the fighting in eastern Ukraine "grave," and said Russia's recent actions harm "the foundations of security in Europe."

The Vladivostok, the first of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers ordered by Russia, was to be delivered next month. The second — named Sevastopol, ironically, after a port in Russian-annexed Crimea — has been slated for delivery next year.

Despite talk Wednesday of a possible cease-fire in Ukraine, Hollande said that's not enough to allow France to authorize the delivery of the Vladivostok. His office made no mention of the second warship.

As recently as July, Hollande said the deal was too costly to cancel, and even this week, his advisers had indicated that France was ready to go ahead with the first delivery. In July, the president said that the Russians had paid for the ship, and France would have to reimburse 1.1 billion euros ($1.5 billion) if it cancelled the delivery.

Unyielding to months of pressure from allies — including from some U.S. senators — French officials had argued that France needed to respect an agreed contract, and said recent sanctions against Russia didn't apply retroactively to the contract agreed three years ago.

French officials have also argued that the ship would be delivered without any weapons.

And Bloomberg notes:

  • *NATO OFFICIAL: ALLIES TO WELCOME FRENCH MISTRAL SALE SUSPENSION

How long before France gets special exemption on running bigger deficits?

Hey, don't knock real French Croissants
(if you can still get one)--they are absolutely
the best thing France has ever produced.

Of course, now even in France, the real thing
is becoming hard to get, and the fake croissants
taste like Wonder Bread franchise products
just like anywhere else in the world.

There was an interesting case of five Israeli built torpedo boats that had been paid for by Israel and constructed in Cherbourg, France. The French had an arms embargo in effect so the ships were not delivered to  Israel. In  December 1969, in a secret operation Israeli sailors seized the vessels and took them to Israel

Anyone daring to compare JEWS or BLACK PEOPLE with MONKEYS, would immediately, and rightly, be denounced as a nasty racist (or some sort of nazi) ... But it seems that in this country, which in fact owe its independence to the French, this kind of ugly anti-french racism is pretty well tolerated …

Even when the Germans occupied France the French didn't learn German. France and the French have been around a long time. They have survived many invasions and despite these they have always succeeded to keep on speaking their language. And in fact the French - surrounded by the Germans, English, Dutch, Italians and Spaniards (among others) - succeeded to win and guard the largest country in the very heart of Europe.

I will buy some french wine:) that was a great move, not for france but for the russian people. 2 warships are worth about 5 bilions. Well, that crazy putin should know that russia could use 5 bilions to improve their schools, hospitals, reduce  infractionality and also alcoholism. not to mention roads:))

Actually, why is putin buying all these weapons? who is attacking russia?:)) cause i only see russians going in other countries and producing problems. So, again, who stole any 1 m2 of russian territoriy to justify investing bilions in a shithole army? Is he the same breed like Kim- Jong-un? That guy is using the same rethoric to keep milions in deep poverty. "West is attacking us":) let's spend all our money to build a huge army. For what? They will not use it. Is their personal toy.

NATO close to russian borders? well, dont give me that, is cheap: NATO was there in the last 15-20 years, nothing happened. West takes 1 week to impose some crappy sanctions and you putin lovers's, ZH readers, tell us that West is conductiong war agains russia? OMG, you are, at least, ------ easy to work with:)))

Obviously, the contingency planning for the aftermath of the U.S. sponsored coup in Kiev was somewhat lacking.

So all this talk of Russian invasion and sanctions... seriously, what is the evidence of Russian Federation involvement in Ukraine again?

Is our foreign policy and the narrative of the chattering class based on the say-so of the puppet regime in Kiev, already responsible for a few brazen lies [or at least claims they could not back up such as the shoot-down] as well as shelling and burning of its own people?

Where's the beef, as it were?

Its not  as if it was a fully operational ship, it was going to be in a dock in Russia for 2 years having weapons fitted.

And the plan was for France to build 2 and Russia to build 2 so Russia just starts earlier and builds all 4, creates some jobs, spends money at home and gets a refund from the frogs.

As always this is not especially bad for Russia and effects the other party worse.  But not the US, just its sucker puppets.

So, no actual change on the supply of the French carrier, just Hollande trying to avoid the flack at NATO in Wales

PARIS, September 3 (RIA Novosti) – The delivery of first Mistral-class helicopter carrier, built for Russia under the 2011 contract, has not been put off yet, as the statement made earlier on Wednesday reflected personal position of President Francois Hollande, a French diplomatic source said Wednesday.

“From the legal standpoint, nothing has changed; the delivery is due November 1. It is a matter of president’s political stance. The head of state said that in the current circumstances, as of today - and if these circumstances do not change – he would not approve delivery of the Mistral,” the source said.

Hollande’s position remains the same, according to the diplomatic source. Russia has to undertake the steps essential to reach a political solution to the crisis in eastern Ukraine to receive the Mistral warships on time.

“The final decision will be made in October following a number of procedures,” the diplomatic source added.

Earlier on Wednesday, the office of President Francois Hollande released a statement, saying that the head of the country concluded that the conditions, under which France could authorize the delivery of the first helicopter carrier are not in place.
