The Battle For Strategic Mariupol Begins As NATO Vows To Do "Whatever It Takes"

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: behold the shelling...

Shelling is reported to have started on the eastern outskirts of Mariupol, Ukraine, according to local reporters on social media. This crucial city, due to its standing as the last major city standing in the way of a land connection to Crimea (from Russia) across the Southern border. Furthermore, Mariupol's strategic importance as a port and major industrial city is crucial to Kiev who are reinforcing the city after losing Novoazovsk last week, with the Ukrainian army on full alert. NATO has been actively sabre-rattling this morning, pulling a full Draghi by threatening to do "whatever it takes" to defend ourselves and our allies, and offering training and support for Ukraine (as they report over 3,000 Russian troops in Ukraine). Escalation?

Furthermore,

"Artillery and tank fire audible on eastern edge of Mariupol. Ukrainians say 4 armored columns advancing towards Shirokina. Hint of panic:" France 24 journalist Robert Parsons says in Twitter post

"Apparently, the rebel tanks have left Novoazovsk several hours ago and are moving towards Mariupol now. Their current position is unclear:” freelance journalist Petr Shelomovskiy says in Twitter post

NATO has some comments too...

“We have left no doubt that we will do whatever it takes to defend ourselves,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says.

Rasmussen: “Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has been a wake-up call. It has reminded all of us that our freedom, security and prosperity cannot be taken for granted. Some are trying to redraw dividing lines in Europe with force”

Terrorism, Middle East turmoil, Russia’s aggression, the threats of cyber-warfare confront NATO with a “climate of chaos” on its borders, he says

Rasmussen: “We will adopt a readiness-action plan that will make our forces faster, fitter and more flexible, ready to address any challenges, whenever they come and from wherever they come”

Rasmussen: Readiness plan to center on “a military unit that can be deployed at very short notice if needed. It would be followed by more forces if needed”

NATO will step up cooperation with Ukraine, help build up and advise Ukraine’s military, he says

Rasmussen: “We will adopt a substantial package for Georgia, a package that will bring Georgia closer to NATO, including a defense-capacity initiative, establishing a training center in Georgia, occasionally also exercises in Georgia”

Rasmussen: “I see NATO as an alliance with a global perspective, not as a global policeman. We can’t solve all crises all over the world”

*  *  *

If this is not escalation, then we are baffled as to what is...

*  *  *

Now it seems Ukraine wants 'talks' again...

Sure those Russian-reported numbers are accurate.  Numbers from either side in a conflict are communicate BS.  US 'body count' numbers in Vietnam were highly creative and it got to the point where they were ludricious and assuming so many kills/wounded per number of rounds fired.  North Vietnam was little different and often reported US casualties at 2x-4x their actual number.

Of course not and the US won't go to war over Ukraine.  Period.  Polls overwhelmingly are against it across all groups and the establishment has been clear that they aren't willing to commit any kind of meaningful American ground troops.  Only token support mainly around logistics, support, and training/strategy

We'll never know for sure when any deal was done.  I suspect in this case here everyone (except the general public) knows what the terms are; the polls, then, provide feedback on how to get around the objections (how to push it forward while making it sound like it's not happening- it's for "democracy" or some other Madison Ave marketing trickery).

Should be great news for the markets. And that map from the Ukies is a joke, Also of note the 'elite' mechanised division came under fire around Lugansk with the Ukies abandoning at least a company of their 'best' T-64 tanks. There should be 80+ in the division the pictures shown on here https://twitter.com/lindseyhilsum/status/507403066346594304 shows at least a dozen to 20, rest is unclear etc.  Also suggestion by the Ukie volunteer battalions to unite with the seps and march on Kiev together rather than the winner because nothing has changed etc.

Translation of press conference by user StopTheFighting at militaryphotos.net

Commanders of Azov, Aidar, and Dnepr saying they will be protesting tomorrow (September 4) at the president's office. They have numerous grievances to voice to the president regarding the ATO. As a reminder, Semen Semenchenko of Donbas Battalion together with other volunteer battalion commanders have recently voiced their concerns to the president as well (see previous video I posted).

Some translation of what these guys said:
- They believe there is a movement to eradicate the volunteer battalions.
- They are upset leadership and oligarchs that they believe started this war have not changed and are still in power.
- They said they are fighting with many guys they used to serve with and would like an answer why they are made to be killing each other.
- They are largely of the opinion this war has been manufactured by those in power in Ukraine.
- They say it's wrong that if they go to European Union, Russia is their enemy. If they go to Russia, European Union is their enemy. He says that maybe both are our friends instead? Why treat either one as enemies?
- He says if European Union is not helping them, why are they wanting to go there?
- Interestingly, a captain from Donbas Battalion interjected and says he somewhat disagrees with the guys in that their battalion's position is that they want Ukraine to be part of EU and NATO.
- They say that both sides (separatists and them), instead of killing each other on an open field and having the winner march on Kiev, should perhaps march on Kiev together.

NATO is funded about 80/20 between the US and Europe, with the US picking up the lion's share.  With Obama reigning in US military spending, the war machine isn't happy.  It needs food.  So they'll call it "NATO" this time and get it that way if they can't get it straight through US military branches.

Right. The problem is that we watch from the peanut gallery and look for simplistic explanations. Unfortunately, the reality is complex. Players have been feigning alliances, planning betrayals, switching sides, etc., etc. It's a mess and very few likely know what is really going on.

Do a little game theory thinking: When players are gathering strength and capabilities, it is advantageous to pretend to be working together for a common goal, e.g. global order. However, as the denouement approaches, ALL major players except one will have to relinquish power and accept being UNDER the ONE leader. Groups seeking power do not do this unless they are absolutely up against the wall. What you are seeing now is the power struggle that was inevitable as control of the world is approached.

Sorry, it just is not simple. It's a mess.

Wrong. It's simple. Or at least the overarching framework here.

Yeah, throw in the magic Jew. Putin is pissed at the end of the USSR and the loss of prestige. He is KGB and he knows the game he is playing and it has nothing to do with fighting bankers. It is about territory and influence and pride. When you make it more then you begin to make him sort of crusader for justice and he ain't. Not on his best day.

The conspiracies have to hit a dead end somewhere, I don't think Putin is complicit or else there wouldn't be a need for all the theater.  He could have just let the US bomb Syria last year rather than coming to Assad's defense.  I think he still has confidence in the separatists to defend their ground, with the aid of a healthy supply of Russian "volunteer" soldiers.

The goal has always been to subjugate Russia and then China.  Both countries know that they will always take a backseat to the West unless the deck is shuffled.

You know, it's not always "theater". Sometimes it is the real stuff and it is real drama. Ukraine is a sort of Syrian multi-rebel mess as best as I can tell. The Ukraine is also not one simple ethnicity, culture, or even political ideology.

From George Will in National Review:

Since its emancipation by the Soviet Union’s demise, Ukraine has been ravaged by corruption that frays national sentiment, which even before this was a tenuous phenomenon. In The Long Shadow: The Legacies of the Great War in the Twentieth Century, David Reynolds of Cambridge University cites a British diplomat’s 1918 analysis:

Were one to ask the average peasant in the Ukraine his nationality, he would answer that he is Greek Orthodox; if pressed to say whether he is a Great Russian, a Pole, or an Ukrainian he would probably reply that he is a peasant; and if one insisted on knowing what language he spoke, he would say that he talked “the local tongue.”

Ukraine may be an ethnic casserole susceptible to diminishment by Putin’s ladle. But the Baltic States, by virtue of their NATO membership, are, regardless of their histories or sociologies, decisively different.

He goes on to argue that Putin is far more dangerous than ISIL which depends on how you are defining danger. However, the historical perspective seems relevant.

To me, the bottom line is that Ukraine may in fact have some internal struggles and even a civil war at hand. It seems so. Every single major nation has had the same at some time. Russia is picking a side and may in fact intervene and either seize territory or set up a loyal puppet state.

Ukraine is not NATO but I believe we and the Russians both promised their securty if they would give up their nukes after the breakup of the USSR. Looks like the deal has gone seriously wrong. Both the USA and NATO need to decide what level of intervention they will take with a non-NATO nation and there are some better and worse options. The problem would also be picking sides if you intervene.

It's a mess and none of knows the path that events will take.

No need to "down arrow" you partner...

What is in the back of "Roeffel's" mind (we can only hope) is how the fuck NATO ever got this deep in the shit pile and that if they make the "wrong conventional move" how it may very well rapidly morph into somethig like this and this which will require the people of Denmark, Poland and Germany (among other places) in that neighborhood to increase their sunblock by a few thousand -preferably with lead in it that will require application with a trowel!

This ain't Gaza, Damascus and Baghdad we're talkin about anymore.

By the way I "up arrowed" you, cause I like your name!  You need to send me some of your stuff so that we can "fly high" together.  May be the only thing left to do based on what we're witnessing our government's doing in our worst interests!

Won't end well for bankers, defense companies, psychopathic politicians either 'lg'.

Ask yourself what it would be like "living underground" with a group of people that are paying you to take care of them after you've lost everything and still have the composure to look after the pieces of shit that made that level of destruction possible?

I think it's safe to say you would have to be 51 cards shy of deck to be a business partner in that kind of an arrangement.  And if you're lucky enough to be in "management"?... You might want to grow a pair of eyes in the back of your skull for the inevitable ROI you will be receiving from your caretakers!

So I see this about 180 from you. Russian economy is built on energy and not debt bubbles. NATO is fighting to keep the petrodollar intact. If it fails the economic system gets reset and that presents risk as nobody really has an idea of what that will look like other than generally unpleasant. There are plenty of Western .govs that will not survive it and that is without an actual war. The West has more to lose by a lot.

Oh. Not many people get downvotes for actual contrarian views. Just the poo flinging trolls get the pile on.

buying Russian gas/oil because they need it?

So, why doesn't Russia just say 'game-over-guys - NATO get out of Ukraine NOW

or noon tomorrow we shut-off all gas/oil pipelines to EU'

I'm not interested whether EU freeze in the dark this winter; the motive for shutting

down the piplelines would instantly cause prices in EU to go from say $100.00/bbl to

$100.00/liter....

The EU public would not only scream murder - they'd murder their politicians for placing

Russia is dependent on exporting natural resources. It has to be seen as a trustworthy partner and this means honoring existing contracts. Not to mention that this is a crucial time for Russia; it's currently diversifying its export market in this sector and it's essential that it's not seen as an untrustworthy partner that will ignore existing contracts to pressure customers politically. It's business first, politics second.

*natgas/ blue gold is nice but expensive to transit (infrastructure, pumping station, etc.,) and the cost differential between oil (black gold) and natgas (blue gold) is ~8:1.

Black Gold is what Russia has, as does Iraq and Kuwait. Sadly, the Saudi's are running dry... but in the east of Arabia, where the shiite's hold great reserves... are doing just fine.

It's amazing how long you Balts have lived next door to Empire, east and west of you, without having figured out a goddamned thing about how Empire works.  You could have easily enough taken the Swiss approach, offering enough advantage to either Empire to leave you alone and let you be the middleman.  But instead, you leaped to jump in bed with the US Empire, as represented by NATO, the EU, IMF, World Bank, etc.  No wonder your economies are in the dumper, while your oligarchs get rich.  And you've got a large neighbor, who should be familiar enough to you, all pissed off.  Brilliant positioning, there.  Have you no maps?

Your role in the US Empire is to shut up and wait for us to want something from you, like a vote in an international body or a few token soldiers in a "coalition of the subjected willing."  Otherwise we like your plywood and your dry shipping index is good for a short now and again.  What else do you do?  We can get herring and fruit jam from Canada if we really wanted more of that.

Seriously, do you guys expect us in the US to think of you as anything more than Putin's Parking Lot?  Your function is to serve as a speed bump between Moscow and, oh, let's just say Berlin.  We'll trade you to Putin for a pipeline or an agreement to keep taking US Dollars, the second it become useful to us to make a deal like that.

You weren't buying into our bullshit, were you?  After our banking system reduced you to poverty?  Not that it helped us individuals in the US any to do that.  The looting of your economy propped up the German banks for a few weeks; a little aperitif on the way to Athens.

You guys sure are loud, though.  That's not going to help you in your assigned role.  Empires get tired of yappy little dogs.  Know who you are and don't get into fights you can't finish.  We're not going to help you unless it meets our needs, in which case what we give you isn't going to be "help," is it.

Or, just read your own history.

There's a fundamental geographic reason the Baltic states are the way they are politically. They're flat.

It's MUCH easier to drive tanks and armies across the Baltic states than it is Switzerland. In Switzerland's case, the preferred route was around Switzerland, which was not that easy either. Hannibal and his elephants knew the problem.

Thu, 09/04/2014 - 12:46 | 5180447 swmnguy

That's a very good point.  Even more reason they shouldn't be antagonizing their neighbor, Russia, in some sense of service to a very distant Empire.  You'd think the Balts would be more into money-laundering, or some sort of smuggling that benefits various oligarchs, or whatever purpose it is that people living in indefensible terrain find to make them more valuable to leave alone than to crush.
