Russian General Demands Preemptive Nuclear Strike Doctrine Against NATO

While NATO is contemplating its existential purpose in a world where the Cold War has suddenly come back with a vengeance, and the military alliance has found itself woefully unprepared to deal with a Russia which no longer accepts the supremacy of the west (appropriately enough NATO is doing this on a golf course) Russia is also strategizing, only instead of issuing "sharply-worded catchphrases" and hashtags, a Russian general has called for Russia to revamp its military doctrine, last updated in 2010, to clearly identify the U.S. and its NATO allies as Moscow's enemy number one. That in itself is not disturbing: we reported as much yesterday and is merely more rhetorical posturing. Where things, however, get very problematic is that the general demands that Russia spell out the conditions under which the country would launch a preemptive nuclear strike against the 28-member military alliance.

Moscow Times reports that Russia's military doctrine, a strategy document through which the government interprets military threats and crafts possible responses, is being revised in light of threats connected to the Arab Spring, the Syrian civil war and the conflict in Ukraine, the deputy chief of the Kremlin's security council told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

That however is the soundbite for politically correct media purposes. Because within the Defense Ministry there are voices calling for different priorities.

"First and foremost, the likely enemy of Russia should be clearly identified in this strategic document, something absent from the 2010 military doctrine. In my view, our primary enemy is the U.S. and the North Atlantic bloc," General Yury Yakubov, a senior Defense Ministry official, was quoted as saying by Interfax.

If this sounds like a statement taken right out of the (first) Cold War, one involving the whole nuclear arms race, is because it is. The 2010 doctrine defines NATO expansion as a threat to Russian national security and reaffirms its right to use nuclear weapons in a defensive posture, but stops far short of declaring NATO as Moscow's primary adversary and laying preemptive nuclear strike scenarios on the table, a posture unmistakably reminiscent of the Cold War.

At the basis of this dramatic escalation is none other than Russia's stated response to what it perceives as a clear expansionary NATO threat.

Yakubov said the information war being waged over the crisis in Ukraine — where the West accuses Russia of arming separatists fighting the government in Kiev — and NATO's announcement that it would establish a permanent military presence in Eastern Europe have validated earlier fears that the alliance's claims of non-aggression toward Russia were insincere.

And the punchline: the general added that special attention should be paid to integrating the functions of the newly created Air and Space Defense Forces with Russia's land, sea and air based nuclear forces. "In addition, it is necessary to hash out the conditions under which Russia could carry out a preemptive strike with the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces," he said.

One can be certain that this is precisely what Russia will do.

So what happens next?

Recall what former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said in November 2008 in his first presidential address to the Russian people: "Russia will deploy Iskander missile systems in its enclave in Kaliningrad to neutralize, if necessary, the anti-ballistic missile system in Europe." An anti-ballistic missle system also known as NATO.

Which it did less than a year ago, long before the Ukraine civil war was headline news every day. This is what happened the last time Russia flexed its nuclear deterrence muscles, in November of 2013.

Russia has stationed missiles with a range of about 500 kilometers in its Kaliningrad enclave and along its border with the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Germany’s Bild-Zeitung reports, citing defense officials it didn’t identify. Satellite images show a “double-digit” amount of mobile units identified as SS-26 Stone in NATO code. Missiles were stationed within the past 12 months. SS-26 can carry conventional as well as nuclear warheads.

This is merely Russia being true to its warning word. From April 2012:

Moscow reiterated on Tuesday it may deploy Iskander theater ballistic missiles in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad that will be capable of effectively engaging elements of the U.S. missile defense system in Poland.

 

NATO members agreed to create a missile shield over Europe to protect it against ballistic missiles launched by so-called rogue states, for example Iran and North Korea, at a summit in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2010.

 

The missile defense system in Poland does not jeopardize Russia’s nuclear forces, Army General Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, said.

 

“However, if it is modernized…it could affect our nuclear capability and in that case a political decision may be made to deploy Iskander systems in the Kaliningrad region,” he said in an interview with RT television.

 

“But that will be a political decision,” he stressed. “So far there is no such need.”

A little over two years later, there is a need.


Which means forget "little green men" in Ukraine. Think massive Russian Iskander ICBM systems planted on the border with Poland, Ukraine, the Baltics and all across Russia Western border, and the furious screamfest this would waterfall into.

We can't wait to see how algos will spin such pre-emptive steps to a very mushroom cloudy World War III...

In the ongoing battle of wits, Russia and the West are out — oiling their energy arsenals — to achieve strategic objectives. In this rather crowded geopolitical chess board, with both sides bent upon using their energy assets, who is going to have the last hurrah remains a big if.

The only question that remains, as we’ve earlier reported in out article is that Putin is ready for Oil War. But is the West ?.

Glad to see Russia standing firm and not letting NATO obfuscation of the real causes of this crisis distract attention away from the fact that the U.S. and Europe, not Russia, are the cause of renewed Cold War tensions.

 

Russia "appeased" NATO for a long time since 1991, and as we all know, appeasement doesn't work. The only way to deal with a greedy land-grabbing asshole is to make him suffer the "costs" of his actions - and that is what Russia is doing.

 

Sickens me how NATO turns this around to make Russia the heavy and tries to make Russia suffer "costs" for its (NATO's) greedy land-grabs, and wants Russia to practice appeasement of NATO.

If Vlad Putin's aides take the time to read Zerohedge (amazingly ranked 1436 in the world), he will know that - whilst few people support the Russian "system" - there are huge numbers of people in America, Europe and elsewhere who are smart enough to have sussed out a long time ago that the crises in Ukraine - and Syria before that - are 100% manufactured by Washington and its allies, mainly Westminster and Brussels plus a long list of spineless sycophants across Europe and elsewhere. NATO is Washington's thug on the street dispensing threats daily.

This deliberately manufactured crises has nothing whatsoever to do with Russia being a threat to world peace and everything to do with creating a distraction to hide the collapsing financial ponzi scheme and economies in the West, the failing USD as global reserve currency and the failing dominance of the Anglo-American Empire. I think it's a mixed picture. We can always point to individual issues where one side if more or less free than the other.

The West is losing its freedoms fast & furiously as the political & banking criminals become ever more desperate to hang onto power and privilege afforded to them under the system of fake democracy, whereas Russia is gaining them because the leadership doesn't feel threatened like those in the West and is happy to maintain a lose grip. At least for now.

I saw a report on MH17 today; apparently what REALLY happened based on what little has leaked out, was a Ukie fighter shot an air to air missile knocking out the right engine.  The pilot did a fairly sharp 180 degree turn and probably was going to try to get the plane on the ground at Kiev airport.  When the Ukies saw the plane was still flying, they knocked it down with cannon fire on the cockpit.  There are 30 caliber holes in the fuselage. They've still not released the black box results or tower tapes, and probably never will.

The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a few years ago. As I write this we are funding and encouraging  Ukraine to wage war on its own people. This has the potential to escalate. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality.

As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome. The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. Whatever the failings and foolishness for whatever corrupt and contemptable motives of the Wall Street criminals and their Washington DC puppets, the greatest failure of the 20th century falls to G.H.W. Bush.  When the Soviet Union collapsed and splintered into its constituent parts (because they all were eager to be free of decades if not centuries of Russian hegemony) the West failed,nay refused to hold Soviet communists and Communism accountable for crimes so hideous as to even eclipse tthose of the Nazis. By the time of the collaspse the Russian military was in total disarray including their nuclear arsenal.  They may have been (and still are ) zenophobic imperialists but they clearly understood what MAD was. And why shouldn't Russia have their own version of what is already in the NATO charter? I forget the number of the article in the document, but I read this particular article of the NATO charter only last night on Global Research. It states that if the USSA or any NATO member state feels threatened by a non member state,(Russia) NATO reserves the right to consider a "pre-emptive nuclear first strike." We promised Russia that we would not use Eastern Europe, after the dissolution of the USSR, to encroach geographically on Russia using its western border nations to expand NATO. Guess what? We broke yet another treaty. We're good at that Go, USSA!!

I've read a bit on the near misses back in the Cold War. Don't expect the US military to be rational and keep us from Nuclear War. The politicians were the ones keeping us from that kind of war. The JCS were for Total War, which tends to escalate things...

Are we getting close to the crash? Da Boys probably figured out how far the "can" can go with studies funded with tax dollars. Along with those tax-funded bunkers/cities.

Might not make it till 2016...

First off, any kind of preemptive strike by Russia would trigger a massive retaliatory counter strike by NATO.  There is no way Russia could take out enough NATO nukes to survive the pay back.  Any use of nukes would therefore be suicidal.  Putin has too much to live for.  He's rich, and I think he enjoys being a leader of a country that actually has a living population.  Conventionally speaking, Russia is weaker than NATO and therefore the nukes are seen as the equalizer.  Russia has to make the nuke threat credible, and that's what this is about.  The problem with war, particularly between nuclear powers, is nothing ever goes exactly as planned.  Things can get out of hand and people can make poor decisions.  We should avoid the whole situation and stay the hell out of Russia's back yard.

As an AMERICAN (now living in Ukraine and having traveled throughout many European and Asian countries), I have found that most people in various countries so NOT equate their country (its people) with their government.

I am still surprised how many Americans think of America and the U.S. government as being the same entity. THat was NOT the intention of the Founding Fathers and until the 14th Amenment (1868), there was NO such thing as a "U.S. citizen". Economist Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, the former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President Reagan, always differentiates between the U.S. government (usually by using the term "Washington") and the country we call America. The people and the geographic area they occupy are America; the U.S. government is a small bunch of politcal clowns (backed by the big banks and large corporations) who want to contol the rest of us.

Iskander is a small theatre missile, not ICBM.

Russia will adopt it to a medium range, up to 3000km, something, what pioneer, ss-20, was.

However, this is doubleedge sword.

US deployed as an answer nuclear tomahawks.

However this is good, that Russians do go out.

As for China, they claim some 40 to 80 ICBMs.

If they report this number the same way, they report their Gold holdings, then this number needs one zero added at the end.
